RANDOM THOUGHTS & OTHER MINDLESS DRIBBLE

And So it goes...

I am personally, so lucky to have great columnists to contribute to this magazine. Elaine Pasqua consults with me every couple of weeks on possible topics for the Column “Real Life” and not only are her choices relevant and timely but she is very thorough.

Elaine agreed to follow in the footsteps of Ellen Rosenberg who initially developed the column for us and wrote for years based on her campus show “Life 101”. Ellen was tragically struck down by brain cancer some years back and the column ended with her death. Years later when Elaine came to me with column ideas, I thought it was the perfect time for her to take up where Ellen left off and she has done an absolutely amazing job. Spanky....what can I say about Spanky other than the fact that he is incredible. He is outrageously funny and each time I get a column in from him, I am amazed by the research he puts into it and I laugh to myself as I read the fruits of his labor. His column is not an easy column to write and not

only is it filled with extraordinary humor, but even little known facts that he has had to research in depth. I already have the column for August and I have to say it is one of my favorites...make sure you don’t miss that one. Now for some sad news. My old boss and buddy from NACA informed me early this summer tha Paul Bartz had passed way quietly. Lou and Kathy Kearn Ross are connected to the performing arts scene but even though I had been a supplier and friend of Paul for some thirty years, his death was low key and totally unexpected. I first met Paul during my 11 year stint with NACA. I had been able to talk the association into developing a print and graphic design division and had been given the authority to set one up. I think Paul had just gone out on his own, leaving Bill Fegan Attraction,s to open his own company. Back then there were two partners with Paul, Ingrid Kidd who was in California and Terry Kippenberger who was in St Louis. Mainstage Management soon became a force in not only the performing arts market but touring Broadway shows. Through my relationship with Paul and Terry, I handled not only much of the printing but the creative design ( you have to remember that back in the late 80’s, computers were relatively new and most of these designs were done on boards by hand). Once Apple became the prime platform for graphic design, costs went down and productivity went up. When every printer went on board, Apple lowered the over-all production cost by 50%.

As we got into the digital age, Ingrid Kidd dropped out of the picture and I dealt specifically with Paul and Terry. These guys handled the shows of some amazing producers, like Circa 21, Troupe America, Signstage Theater, Nunsense and others along with some well-known stage and television personalities.

When I left NACA in 1991, their business followed me and flourished. I designed some of the work, printed almost all their work, warehoused it and shipped it to venues as the shows toured. A few years ago, Terry decided to retire and Paul moved the business to Paris VA, where he opened up under a different name, Windwood Theatricals. He opened a Broadway office in New York soon after at the Forbidden Broadway offices of John Friedson and later moved that office to the Helen Hayes Theater. Paul was a strong provider of touring Broadway shows, especially in the non-equity category and was involved in casting the parts. Shows like Big River, Copacabana, Hello Dolly, Forbidden  Broadway and Forbidden Hollywood, Cool Hand Luke, The Jungle Book, The Music Man, The Three Irish Tenors, John Amos’ Halley’s Comet, Ed Asner as FDR and the list goes on and on. Paul’s journey was a labor of love. He was a respected innovator and accomplished business man. He will be sorely missed.

Dead Wrong! reer as a stand-up comic has taken me to war zones, prisons, biker bars, and mafia clubs, places where the likelihood of being caught dead increase. But history indicates a comedian is more likely to be caught dead overdosed in a hotel room, like Lenny Bruce, John Belushi, Mitch Hedberg and Greg Giraldo. Given how much time comics spend in hotel rooms it is no surprise this has become such a common demise. Although it is a dreadful way to go, I would prefer it to that of rock stars, Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham, and Bon Scott, who choked to death on their own vomit (at least it is assumed it was their own vomit, as Nigel Tufnel pointed out in This Is Spinal Tap, “You can’t really dust for vomit.”) But, I’ve discovered there are worse ways to go.

By Steven Kent McFarlin (AKA Spanky)

"Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh." George Bernard Shaw

About 40 years ago, the improvisational troupe, The Second City, first created their “Funeral” sketch that has now become a comedy classic. In it, a man who tried to get the last baked bean out of a one-gallon can dies by getting his head lodged in the can. At his funeral, mourners struggle to restrain their laughter when being told how he died. It is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. (Google the video “Funeral – From The Second City’s 25th Anniversary.” Thank me later.)

My mother used to warn me to always wear clean underwear in case I was in an accident. The logic being I could avoid the shame of medical personnel, and/or the coroner, discovering I was the type of person who did not wear clean underwear. (Of course, this logic only applies to people who are fortunate enough to not see the accident coming, which might have an adverse effect on underwear.) I faithfully heeded my mother’s advice, because I feared my last thought would be “Well, this is going to be embarrassing!”

Another one of my mother’s favorite phrases was “I wouldn’t be caught dead there.” My ca-

A friend told me that during a defensive driving class, a fireman informed her that dozens of people have died from picking their nose when their airbag deployed, propelling their finger into their head. (He supported this information with the results of a poll that found that the car is the second favorite location for people to pick their nose, right behind the toilet.) I’m sure I am not alone when I say that when I die and people ask how I went, nose-picking will not be very high on my list of desired answers. Which brings me to my point: Life can be humiliating. So can death.

The demise of both actor David Carradine and INXS frontman Michael Hutchence was suspected to be from autoerotic asphyxiation, and death by masturbation ranks even lower than nose-picking. A 32-year old Floridian, Edward Archbald, recently died from the effects of winning a contest to see who could eat the most cockroaches and that makes for a fairly humiliating obituary.

Hollywood movie star, Lupe Velez, hoped to make a beautiful exit by suicide, planning for her body to be found in her bed surrounded by flowers, in her nicest dress, with her hair and makeup perfect. After swallowing 580 barbiturate pills her plans when awry; the pills not only made her sleepy, they also made her vomit. The next day her maid found poor Lupe with her head in the toilet. She had drowned.

I read of a (unnamed) man that attempted suicide by jumping into an outhouse, only to spend three days up to his waist in raw sewage before being rescued. The police report, in a rare case

6, CAMpUS ACTIvITIES MAGAzINE®, SUMMER 2014

of law enforcement humor, claimed his attempt might have been successful if he had only jumped headfirst. Thus, the man suffered a humiliating failure at his attempt at a humiliating death.

Which brings me to my next point: Life is ironic. So is death. The irony that Paul Walker, the star of the Fast and Furious movies, died in a car crash is hard to deny. But he is one of many to have an ironic death. The most feared warrior of his time, Attila the Hun, died from a nosebleed. The Marlboro Man died from smoking cigarettes.

The owner of Segway, Jimi Heselden, died when he drove his Segway off a cliff. Health food advocate, Basil Brown, overdosed on Vitamin A after drinking ten gallons of carrot juice in ten days.

The man credited with starting America’s fitness revolution by promoting the health benefits of regular jogging, Jim Fixx, died at the early age of 52 from a heart attack during his daily run.

Ohio lawyer, Clement Vallandisham, was defending a man charged with murder and accidentally shot himself while demonstrating how the victim might have accidentally shot himself. The defendant was cleared. The lawyer died. When I really give it some thought, it is debatable if a deceased person is capable of feeling shame, humiliation, or irony. So, I suppose it does not matter where I am caught dead. However I still hope I am wearing clean underwear. Saxon King, Edmund Ironside, was killed by an assassin that hid in the cesspool below and thrust his sword upward into the King's fundament. Ouch! Steven Kent McFarlin (AKA “Spanky”) has been described by the press as a “campus entertainment icon.” He offers two great events at one great low price, and has been voted “Campus Comic of the Year” (LaffGuru.com) and the “Campus Performer of the Year” (TalkingAboutMyGeneration.com). His credits include over fifty TV appearances, including: Showtime, Good Morning America, and The Late Show. He is represented by GP Entertainment.

Welcome Back To School !

Welcome to college! This exciting transition arrives faster than you think! Are you ready for the challenges that lie ahead?

food service. Watch your portions and don’t eat until you feel full so you can avoid putting on those extra pounds.

Exercise for your physical and mental wellbeing. You'll feel better and have more energy. When you exercise, the brain secretes more endorphins which elevate your mood, creating a more positive outlook on life. Take advantage of

Find a quiet place that is conducive to studying. It may not always be your dorm room. Organization is the key. Utilize a calendar to keep yourself on track for your deadlines and refer to your syllabus. Don’t leave papers and other long-term projects for the last minute. It adds stress and you will not perform as well.

Nurture yourself! Many freshmen go crazy with their new-found freedom, turning the first semester into a free-for-all. Get plenty of sleep so you can recharge mentally and physically. Sleep deprivation decreases memory retention, leading to lower grades. Eat a well-balanced diet and watch out for that freshman 15! Most college dining halls have all-you-can-eat style

Alcohol abuse is the high-risk behavior that interferes most with a successful college education today. Learn to have a good time without that social lubricant. We see many negative outcomes from lower GPA’s, increased drop outs, unprotected sex, sexual assaults, accidental injuries and deaths, aggressive behavior, and property damage. It is natural to feel homesick. For some it does not occur until several weeks into the semester. Remember, many students are in the same situation, away for the first time from family and friends. This is your chance to create a new family and long-lasting relationships. Join clubs and organizations that interest you. You will find like-minded people and develop a sense of connection with the campus community.

Twenty five percent of students entering college will either drop out or do not return to the same institution their second year. Often referred to as “The Red Zone,” the first six weeks of freshman year are most crucial to determining the overall success of a college student. College is a stepping stone for your future success and you want to maximize this opportunity. Prioritize your academics as first and foremost!

The freshman’s greatest challenge is time management. You will find that you will not have the same structure as you did in high school. It is easy to become distracted with socializing, the internet, video games, or social networking. Structure your day so you accomplish your academic work first and play later. Balance is important!

“Remember why you are here.”

the exercise equipment that's available to you in the recreation center or walk on a regular basis. Party in moderation! I have met students who are now on the 5 or 6 year plan because they flunked classes in their freshman year. Partying was their priority. A college education is expensive today; you don't want to add thousands of dollars to your bill.

I met a girl who was working at an auto rental counter. She shared that she had a full scholarship to a prestigious state university and partied hard her first semester. By the end of that semester her GPA was a whopping .8! She lost her scholarship. Her parents were so angry they made her move home, pay for her own education, and attend the local campus, which she hates. At that point in time she should have been a junior. She was still a freshman because she was working full time to pay for her education. I asked her what she would say if she were to give advice to incoming freshmen, she replied,

You may have challenges with your roommate. Be considerate of each other’s needs and learn to openly communicate your feelings to keep the relationship healthy.

People employed on campus are there to help you, take advantage of their resources. I have found that those who work in higher ed are most caring and dedicated - from professors, to Deans, counselors, staff in student life, athletics, wellness, etc. They truly have your wellbeing at heart. Don’t be afraid to develop a mentoring relationship.

This is an exciting time of your life. You will have positive experiences, and some challenges along the way. Don’t let them get the best of you. Some of our greatest life-lessons and strengths come from adversity - it builds character. College is a privilege, not a right, so don’t take this incredible opportunity for granted, and have fun!

if you think AEP is not for you, think again. The Association of Entertainment Professionals (AEP) held their Fourth Annual Signature Conference this past June 19-21 at the historic grand Opera House in Wilmington DE and showed an increasing number of entertainment specialists not only state-of-the-art showcases, but exceptional interactive educational sessions that included legendary agent Kenny DiCamillo of William Morris Endeavor (nYC); and power buyers Laura ishum, Director of Entertainment for Pinnacle Entertainment (Las vegas); Mark Felix, buyer and Director for Drury Entertainment group (nYC) and Steve Bailey, Executive Director for The grand Opera House. But that was just for starters. There was a technology session featuring Jon Adcock, President of PTE Productions (Orlando); greg Russell, owner of Tandem Digital Entertainment (California); and Michael Marlin, Owner of LuMA Theater (Hawaii). And finally a session on What’s Trending in Social Media with Troy Pederson, Central Casting Director for all Disney Properties (FL); Jessica goldberg, Director of Tourism, Clarksville/Montgomery County CvB (Tn); and Jim Coarse, SEO Specialist for Mobius Media (DE). So if you yearned for the days when nACA was relaxed and fun, AEP definitely gives you that experience in spades. 18, CAMPuS ACTiviTiES MAgAzinE®, SuMMER 2014

But even with that said, AEP is not for everyone. The organization is not interested in huge delegations from schools on holiday or students being rewarded with a trip. it is made up for serious entertainment buyers, agents and artists who make up nearly every part of the entertainment industry and it is all about learning and www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

Compared to other associations and conferences, it is relatively inexpensive. There are a growing number of acts, agencies and even directors and buyers who are now involved, not only as members but serving in a capacity of volunteer leadership that will strengthen and tweak the organization to make is better and more relevant. AEP is comprised of some of the top buyers and agencies not only in the nation but in the world.

doing business. it is relaxed but it is a professional conference and organization whose members like to do business with other members. if you are a director, responsible for buying entertainment or learning about entertainment and pursuing this as a field of endeavor, then this is your organization. Embrace it. www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

We have been most fortunate to have in our midst people like Rick Stowe from eastCoast Entertainment who has not only planned and scheduled our showcases but who has been a producer. Bob Higa has coordinated every single educational session since our inception. And Barbara Banta is our behind-the scenes producer who makes sure the sound checks and the performance schedule goes off without a hitch. After each showcase there is a Meet and greet where buyers can casually talk with artists and their agents about schedules and rates for their venues. And then a Late night Jam where all artists, agents and buyers can actually JAM in the bar and some very unlikely associations and friendships result. For 2015, check us out regularly at aepworldwide.org. if entertainment is your business, AEP is just for you. CAMPuS ACTiviTiES MAgAzinE速, SuMMER 2014, 19

SPECiAL MESSAgE TO ARTiSTS AnD AgEnCiES in THE CAMPuS MARKET

This year every artist and agency has the chance to do something amazing and it takes very little effort on your part. i am asking you to join Campus Activities Magazine® in our Second Dream Date Promotion. The cost to you is OnLY $199 and HALF of that fee goes to save or rescue an animal in need. Every 6 seconds in this country, a cat or a dog is euthanized, some after only being in local animal shelters for 24 hours. i am not talking about sick, aggressive or rabid animals but pets that loved someone and thought someone loved them. Animals that gave unconditional love. if you have ever owned a pet, you know exactly what i mean. if you don’t, please go to save-jake.org and watch the video on our home page. if you can come away with dry eyes, check your blood pressure because you are not part of the human race.

Artists, for your meager $199 annual fee, you will be included in the acts that schools can select from to win their “dream date”. Your photo and name will appear in every promo for one full year as a supporter of AFA (Artists For Animals). During the course of this promotion, schools can win the chance to select from all the artists participating for an event at their school for free. They must supply an appropriate venue for the act/event they select as well as provide the necessary sound, lights, etc. They will also supply accommodations for artist(s) involved in the event they select. Campus Activities Magazine® will cover the event live and do a feature story on both the campus program and the act. We will make this a Big DEAL!

in order to participate, campuses must submit details of any program, event, or contribution that will benefit the rescue or adoption of animals in their community. They can have a volunteer day at a local shelter, hold a spay & neuter clinic on their campus, sponsor an event that would benefit the rescue of animals or any other creative way to make a difference. At the end of the promotion the staff of Campus Activities Magazine® will evaluate all the entries and the top FOuR campuses will receive national recognition on our website and in our magazine. The Top TWO, will be able to select from all artists involved to receive their Dream Date.

i want you to know up front this is a cause very near and dear to my heart. i have parented ten special needs kids as both an adoptive parent and foster parent. i wish they were all success stories but that did not happen. However, i did defy the national odds and became Chairman of The Council on Adoptable Children for two years. My quest to save animals came in conjunction with these kids that most people considered throw-aways. There is no way i can adopt all of the animals that need to be rescued but with your help we can make a difference in the lives of many that would have been otherwise lost.

The Save-Jake Foundation helps in other ways too. When you or your agency buy your printing, logo convention goods, apparel, gifts, giveaways or any specialty items, not only do you get competitive pricing, but 50% of all profits go to save an animal needing to be rescued. These are things you are probably already buying, so use that opportunity to save a life, plus you can select the shelter that benefits from your purchase. Your participation is extremely important to me so if you have any questions, call me at (803) 917-5121 or email me at kirby@cameopublishing.com. Come on, FEEL THE LOvE, SAvE A LiFE! it will make you feel a whole lot better.

Kindest Regards,

W.C. Kirby, Jr. Publisher, Campus Activities Magazine®

if any one agency has constantly hit the mark for us here at Campus Activities Magazine, is has been APA (Agency For The Performing Arts).

They have had a knack for “developing talent” especially for the Campus Market and they have delivered for us time and time again, not only with music but comedy as well. Some of the artists you will probably be familair with that they brought to us first we acts like:

Fall Out Boy, Plain White T’s, Capital Cities, Flogging Molly, Josh Blue and even Lewis Black and that is just naming a few. These acts blew up right as we introduced them and the campus market got to book them for only a fraction of what they are going far today-- a very small fraction.

Throughout history, the campus market has been the testing ground for acts on their way up the ladder and it is agencies like APA, who have the confidence in colleges to be the test for what will fly and what will not, that makes them so unique.

We suggest that you carefully consider any act that APA brings to the table (1) because they are invested in the college market, and (2) they have a significant success rate for finding acts that are relevant for the youth market.

The Front Bottoms are a hot emerging act with a unique sound and a national touring schedule. Playing dozens of dates this year already across this country and internationally, The Front Bottoms are very much a band suited to the college scene.

The first question to get out of the way is an obvious one: Where’d they get their name? Brian Sella, the groups lead vocalist, laughs as he tells us the name’s humble origins.

“i came up with the name after i watched the movie ‘Sexy Beast’ starring Sir Ben Kingsley. it was just a hilarious movie and that quote came from one of my favorite parts. it was the first time i had heard that term used before.”

Shortly thereafter he called up his friend Matt uychich. “i said ‘hey man, let’s start up a band. i have a name, how do you feel about it?’ He said ‘let’s do it!’

Brian already had a catalog of songs he had written, so the two got together and started recording. www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

“They were very rough tracks, usually done in one take. We would come home and send them to our friends or put them on the internet. it developed through the years and we have gone through some lineup changes. Matt’s brother used to play keyboards and we had a friend who played bass for a while, but now we have our lineup solidified. When we play live we bring along our friends Ciaran O’Donnell on keys/trumpet/guitar and Tom Warren on bass.” The band was started in the summer of 2008.

“Since then, we have pretty much been all about dedicating our lives to this project,” Matt says. “it’s all about the music and we love touring and hanging out. it is the perfect career choice for us. Just recently we have been able to afford a small apartment and travel better and further, so things are really growing. We do whatever we can to stay on tour and reach as many people as we can.”

The group signed to the Bar/none Record label a few years ago and has had success with their music releases. So much so that their music has taken their touring schedule all over the world.

“We were just in Canada,” Brian says, “and we recently got back from Europe. We really love playing live and the people we meet when we are on the road. The opportunity to go not only all over The united States but other parts of the world is really cool. So far, so good.” This band has quite literally worked their way up from the ground floor. Below ground, if you want to be technical about it.

“When we first started playing, we were in basements,” he laughs. “it was mostly because we didn’t really have any fans, so when we would try to get shows at bars, we weren’t enough of a draw yet. style. We found out we could play at parties in people’s garages and basements and there are plenty of people there who all want to be there and are having fun and really enjoying the music. When we started out we played a ton of college basements.” Hailing from new Jersey, there were quite a few local schools where The Front Bottoms found a home. “Rutgers university was a big spot for us. We played many shows in the college

towns of Lowell, MA, Philadelphia, Richmond, vA and some down in Florida.

So we started playing those shows, working on our chops learning how to really perform and make sure people were entertained. We steadily worked our way up to bars with open mic nights and coffee houses. We played some small music venues and by that point we had enough of a following to

start getting noticed. now we can go around and play a venue and usually fill it up.”

This band has been busy, and will continue to stay that way.

“We were on the road for about seven and a half months last year. That was a lot of shows. This year we have been out even more so far. Through August, we will have had a total of six weeks off in 2014. Every other time we are on the road. We are never home for more than

venue bookers. We want to play more festivals. We have done a few in Europe and it is a pretty awesome experience. We are playing Riot Fest in Chicago in September, which is pretty exciting.”

When it comes to the style of music to expect from The Front Bottoms, we really recommend you go to their website: (http://thefrontbottoms.com) and have a listen. it’s a style that’s a little bit hard to express exactly in words.

two weeks at a time.”

The band is playing a wider variety of shows and gets some pretty choice dates.

“We usually play theater and music venues at this point,” Matt says, “but we have been fortunate in that respect because of the following we have built. We have enough people show up to make those types of shows viable for us and the promoters or

“i always describe the music as fun,” Brian says laughing, “but i know that doesn’t really help people much when it comes to describing a particular type of music. We try to make punk rock music, but it’s a little more rock n’ roll. i play an acoustic guitar and it has a little bit of a ‘dancy’ feel. There is a very positive energy about it.” We all stand on the shoulders of giants, and sometimes taking a look at the artists that inspired an act can provide perspective on

their sound. “When we were younger, we listened to acts like Blink-182 and other pop/punk bands. As we got a little bit older more things like Bright Eyes and much more indie music. They Might Be giants, The Weakerthans, Superchunk, Modest Mouse... those are all influences that led us to make happier punk rock music with an indie vibe.” Believe it or not, that is one of the most accurate descriptions of a band’s own music

that you will ever hear. That description makes them right up the average college student’s alley. The sound is perfect, and their experience is perfect as well. Apart from the basement parties on college campuses, this band has a long history of experience actually working with the campus activities arm of the booking process. “We started the band in college, and i actually had friends that had positions on www.campusactivitiesmagazine.com

student activities boards. They would do a spring festival or craft fair and we got invited to play a lot. From the beginning of our careers we knew that market existed and tried to work it as much as possible.

“When it comes to working with college programmers, we have done it and we really love doing so, honestly. They always treat you so well and the turnouts are usually good for us, and the vibe there is always really fun and welcoming. We are looking

forward to booking plenty of future tours through the campus market.” For more information on The Front Bottoms, contact John Lashnits or email him at: jlashnits@apanewyork.com

Sammy's comedy is edgy but so purposeful. If a school judges based on language and not what he is intending to convey though a humorous message, they miss the whole point of meeting students where they are at and changing stereotypes and cultural norming. I don't know if his comedy is intentional, but it is funny and educational and meaningful. Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS 01/15/14 125+ The Pit 5555555 It is a pleasure working with Bass/Schuler Entertainment. They are quick to respond to questions and are very professional. They are my favorite agency to work with. I currently work with Scott Bass and he is so kind and thoughtful that you truly feel a part of the Bass/Schuler Entertainment family! He is a great resource and I have really enjoyed working with him thus far. Chrisjones came to campus early to do some teasers during lunch and dinner to promote his show that night. Within 30 minutes of him being on campus he was meeting a lot of students and decided to go running with our cross country team in the afternoon. The night of the show he was professional and was willing to help us set up if need be. He ended up watching the wrestling match before he came to the location to set up his things. The students really enjoyed having him on campus and seeing his show and his teasers all over campus. He is definitely someone we will have on our campus again! Tricia Saunders, RD/SAB Advisor

North Central College, Naperville, IL 01/17/14 700+ Pfeiffer Hall 4555-55 Working with Bass/Schuler Entertainment is always so easy and pleasant. The individual staff members are so personable and willing to accommodate and be flexible to ensure that the college/university books artists and attractions that will be a good fit. Hypnotist chrisjones returned to North Central College for a second year this January and, in our opinion, will be a continued annual show. chrisjones is very friendly, easygoing, and helpful in the process of coordinating his show on campus. He communicates clearly to make the planning and behind-the-scenes preparation very simple and straightforward. His show is high-energy and engaging. He has loud, Top-40 music playing before the show, which immediately gets the crowd pumped up and highly anticipating the performance. chrisjones references pop-culture and relevant material that is tailored to his audience. His humor and approach to the show immediately gains the attention and investment of the audience members. chrisjones incorporates popular music into show and directs the hypnotized students to interact with those who are not hypnotized, making sure that all members in attendance have some role or participation in the experience. Overall, North Central College is highly impressed by the past two shows that chrisjones has brought to campus and the College plans to continue to make chrisjones's show an annual event. It is one of the most highly attended programs of the year! dani izac, Area Hall Director; Office of Residence Life Simpson College, Indianola, IA 01/18/14 250 The Principal Black Box 5555544 Kristen Wyse, Assistant Director of Student Activities

Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, MO 04/29/14 195 Taylor Performing Arts Center 5545555 Eric's mind reading was second to none. The technical parts of the show were some of the very best that we have seen on campus. His illusions were magnificent. At times, it seemed as though he struggled to make the audience a part of the show. A major reason for this is likely because we had to have him perform in a 2500 seat auditorium in which the stage is about 40 feet from the nearest audience member. I would guess that if he would have been in a more intimate venue, he would have had no issue in integrating the audience fully into the show. Providence College, Providence, RI 04/24/14 400+ Providence College 4555-55 John's lecture was fantastic. The turnout was amazing--by my estimate at least 400 people (and standing room only, to boot). My senior colleagues who have been at PC for 20 years or more tell me that it was the best-attended academic event they have seen at the college. And John's talk was exactly what I expected it to be: clear, tightly argued, and entertaining. I have received a ton of feedback from students, faculty, and staff. All of it has been extremely positive. I assure you that I have nothing negative to say about the event.
