CAMDEN SCHOOL FOR
Camden School for Girls is back to its full pre pandemic glory. This term we have seen the return of Skern, our three day residential trip to Devon for all the Year 12 students. Our Open Evenings returned and we welcomed over 1,200 visitors to the school showcasing the brilliant work of our students and staff. Our first alumni event for a number of years gave us the opportunity to connect the rich history of the school to the present, with old girls meeting current students and sharing some lovely memories. I have continued my visits to local primary schools, meeting families and younger students and sharing the work we do. One of my main aims is to firmly root the school in the community and it is a pleasure to meet so many delightful and interesting people. I would like to express my gratitude and thank you for your continued support of the school.

Year 7 Team Building Day

On September 5, our new Year 7 students took part in a fantastic team building day with a company called WiseUp Team Building in nearby Cantelowes Park.

Students had to work on different team building tasks whose aim was to get each individual to work as a cohesive unit to solve problems and thus get to know each other.
Year 7 have made a fantastic start to their life at CSG.
Here are some photos of their day which played a big role in helping students to build confidence and break the ice with their peers. More photos can be found on our website here.

Year 8 trip to The Tempest

The Tempest trip to the Globe Theatre was a joyful, funny and exciting experience. We were very lucky to have the opportunity given by our teachers, Ms Trench, Ms Essery, Ms Neuburger and Ms Earnshaw Punnett. Some of the best parts were the outfits, especially the one worn by Prospero. The props and set designs were also amusing, as the Shakespeare play had modern day items such as flamingo pool floaties, rubber ducks and fast food packaging. My favourite bit was when Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo dressed up as characters from Harry Potter and quoted from it. The best characters in my opinion were Ariel, Caliban, Prospero, Trinculo and Stephano.

This is because they were either hilarious, well acted or had a good plot line. While we were there it started to rain rather heavily and was almost as if we survived our own tempest. Overall it was well scripted, well acted and I am very happy our teachers took us.

Year 9 trip to The Crucible

On Thursday 13 October the English department took a group of Year 9 students to the National Theatre to see Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, which some of us are studying. The set included rainfall as a curtain and the singing from the actors created the perfect atmosphere. All of the performers were amazing and portrayed their characters convincingly. It was beautifully staged, we enjoyed it very much.

Journalism Speakers
Also on Thursday 13 October, CSG invited three journalists Emma Hogan (Americas Editor of The Economist), Laura Freeman (Chief Arts Critic of The Times) and Susanna Butter (Deputy Editor, Culture, The Sunday Times). These journalists explained the launch in their careers, the path which led them to their current positions, and how they battled some tough experiences throughout their careers. They explained that starting small should not be perceived in a negative way, and they told us about how journalism shaped who they are today their hobbies, experiences, choices, opinions. Overall, this was a great experience and it was so interesting and inspirational to hear inside views of journalism! It was especially helpful for those of us involved in the creation of the new CSG newspaper.

Year 12 Skern trip
On 28 September, the Sixth Form team took Year 12 students to a residential activities centre in Devon for three days as the final part of their induction. Whilst there, students worked in small and large groups so they could get to know as many of their cohort as possible. Students had the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities such as, surfing, climbing high ropes, kayaking, tunneling, archery, scaling climbing walls and more. The days were busy, invigorating and fun filled and the feedback from students was resoundingly positive. I would like to thank all the staff that accompanied us on the trip for all their hard work and dedication, and the students themselves for being so well behaved and cooperative and making the trip such a success!

Black History Month
During October we celebrate Black History Month. As well as our whole school assembly, Black History Month display and competition, we used the Friday news to showcase local Black History Month heroes such as our Meal and Break Supervisor Angela Arthur and alumna Sabrina Francis The Sixth Form also produced a series of excellent mini lectures during lunchtime discussing the achievements of Heather Agyepong, Bell Hooks, Audre Lorde and Sojourner Truth

Year 9 Design Technology trip to Cockpit Arts studios

Agroup of Year 9 students went to the Cockpit Arts Studios in Bloomsbury to meet four designers; one in clay sculpture, one in textile design, one in metal work and one in knitting. It was really interesting to meet people and find out about their designs and what inspired them to choose this career path and how theygot to where they are today.
The makers are able to rent out small spaces for an affordable price so that they can create their own products. It was an amazing experience to go and see how many different paths you can take from just designing! For example, we met a tailor and his ideas were to try and bring more old fashioned clothes back into style by adapting them to make them look a bit more modern! We also did a mini workshop where we learnt how to braid coloured wool, creating really cool patterns depending on how many pieces you used. Overall, we had a really fun time seeing just a glimpse of what careers DT can lead you into!

Ex Camden student Daisy Srblin, now Chief Executive of Young Camden Foundation came to talk to us about her start in life and how she got to where she is now. She grew up living in Camden with her mother with little family income, but Daisy never let that get her down or dampen her academic aspirations. Whilst in the Sixth Form, Daisy worked extremely hard and really enjoyed learning. She also became involved in the extra curricular life of the school and was voted Sixth Form Head Girl by her peers. Daisy was the first person in her family to attend university. She went to Durham University to study history and although she had a rocky start she still pushed on and graduated in 2013 practically at the top of her class. She showed us a picture of herself with her mum on Graduation Day and told us how proud her mum was of all her daughter had achieved.
After university, Daisy went into Finance and worked in the City for a time where she learned a lot but did not enjoy it very much. Following on from this, Daisy worked in a number of different jobs until she ended up where she is now, CEO of the Young Camden Foundation which is a registered charity set up to address the growing uncertainty of long term investment in the children and young people sector in Camden and the need to build more cross-sector partnerships. They work with organizations to develop new approaches to supporting young people. Daisy loves her job; she only became CEO earlier this year and is really looking forward to the challenge of making YCF the best it can be. Daisy finally outlined the central message of her talk which was to always have confidence in ourselves no matter what our background.
Daisy was an inspiration and we are very grateful for her visit.

Tulip Siddiq, Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury and the MP for Hampstead and Kilburn spoke to the Sixth Form on Monday 17 October. Born and raised in London, Tulip’s interest in politics stemmed from an experience as a young girl. At the age of 5, living in Singapore, her father had a stroke and Tulip vividly recalled overhearing anxious conversations about treatment costs and procedural information. Coming to the UK, and finding out about the NHS, she realised the value of public services and started her journey into the Labour Party. Her desire to become an MP was founded on the overall values of social justice and supporting public services.

At a stressful moment in her own private life she had just had an emergency C section at the Royal Free Hospital Siddiq received a call from Richard Ratcliffe, Nazanin’s husband. Nazanin was being charged with espionage in Iran. After travelling to Iran with her 18 month old child, Nazanin had become unreachable. Richard made enquiries at the Foreign Office and was told to not campaign or else she would be in danger or worse, not ever return. Ignoring this advice, Siddiq then followed Richard’s wishes and asked over 400 questions in parliament to get her out. It became known that the situation was caused by the UK’s £400 million historic debt to Iran. After 6 years of fighting against the government and Parliament paying the money back, Nazanin was freed. Siddiq involves herself in the small causes and occasionally big causes like these.

Responding to a question about how she manages the different needs of her constituents, given that Hampstead and Kilburn encapsulates a wide variety of socio economic need, she’s realised that accessibility is a problem. Those that need her help have more trouble asking for it. A balance is made by looking at postcodes and doing zoom surgeries. Previously, she offered in person surgeries at a Kilburn mosque to try and reach the Muslim community, which she hopes to start up again.
It was clear to me that everyone enjoyed the assembly. Engaging and hopeful, we’d love to have her back!

Year 11 trip to Wales

Our GCSE geographers ventured the Brecon Beacons in Wales during mid-October in search of data, waterfalls, and coal mines. Successful with all three, they also had time for campfires, marshmallows, and mountains of hash browns. The wet weather forecast was miraculously unreliable. So good to have this favourite trip back in the regular calendar

We took 36 students to Hampstead Heath to compete against other students in the Camden borough. All students ran amazingly well with Milica (7M) placing 1st in her race! Well done CSG!

Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Friday 8 October the whole school participated in an amazing Macmillan Coffee morning that raised over £1,200 to support people living with cancer. Mary Kavanagh along with other CASCA members and the Head Prefect Team & Sixth Form Prefects sold a tasty array of cakes, cookies & brownies. Thank you to all who baked these tempting treats and also to those that supported this worthwhile event.

Alumni Afternoon Tea

As part of our work on reaching out to the alumni community, on Saturday 15 October over 60 alumni joined us here at the school for a delicious afternoon tea along with talks by our alumnae Fiona Millar and Daisy Srblin and music performances by our talented students. An enticing table was laden with cucumber sandwiches, scones, cakes, macarons and meringues. On a separate table Ms Green, Librarian and keeper of the school archives, had curated a wide selection of artefacts and magazines and photos from across the decades which enthralled our guests. The event ended with some informal tours of the school led by our fantastic student volunteers. It was a delight to welcome former students and their families and to hear fascinating accounts of their time at Camden. A huge thank you to all students who helped and performed
