A Letter from the Rector Rev. Joseph P. Capella

Dear Friends of CCHS,

CAMDEN CATHOLIC PRAYER Composed by the Class of 2002 Father, we ask for Your blessings as we gather as the Camden Catholic Family. Help us to use the gifts and talents you have so generously bestowed upon us as we carry out Your will. May the virtues of Honor, Faith and Loyalty shine brightly in everything we say and do for the glory of Your name. Amen.

“Let us glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character and character produces hope” (Rom. 5: 4-5). Not a very uplifting way to introduce the content of this issue is it? However, to some extent, I think that it sums up our lived experiences over these past several months. Also, it speaks to the tenacity of the Irish experience. CCHS has faced much since its founding in 1887 and has always rebounded, persevering and continuing on in its mission. This year has been no exception. Rather, all of us have now added to this legacy by our endurance and even our glorying in what we have encountered. St. Paul reminds us that there is a sure knowledge that suffering is seminal in producing something greater. Ultimately, it produces hope because it is built upon a character forged through life’s challenges. Recently, after a Sunday Mass at a shore parish where I assist, I was introduced to an alumnus from the class of 1977. He shared with me that while a student at CCHS, most mornings he dreaded pulling into the driveway and in fact, as soon as he saw “that huge, white edifice of a building, most mornings, I wanted to turn around.” I asked why he thought he had such a negative experience and he responded that, in fact, it was a great experience and has always been very grateful that he graduated from Camden Catholic. He added, however, that this perspective didn’t grab hold of him until some years after he left. Now that he is in the area much more caring for his parents, he told me that every time he drives by 300 Cuthbert Boulevard, he can’t help but look over and see that expansive white building and thank God, all of his many teachers, parents and everyone who endured his teenage years as he navigated through them. Oftentimes, that’s the reality of our suffering. We can’t see the construction of character while it is being built. We do not appreciate the price of perseverance required in order to bring us to a sense of hope. The ending of this past academic year and the present time in which we are currently living may seem to be overwhelmingly insufferable. We may not be able to see the hope embedded in the midst of our challenges. However, like this graduate whom I met, we will persevere, emerge with a strong character that will ultimately produce hope for the future of CCHS. Enjoy the contents of this issue, it is terrific! Many thanks to all who have contributed to its publication and as always, please be assured of prayers for you and your loved ones from all of us at CCHS. GO IRISH! Sincerely,

Rev. Joseph P. Capella Rector

A Letter from the Board Chair Jack Pund ’74

Dear Members of the Camden Catholic family, “For the green and the white, we will fight!” It is more than a jingle. The 2020 Camden Catholic leadership, faculty, and students (especially the 2020 graduates) have shown remarkable determination, fight, and resiliency. You have persevered in the face of relentless and unprecedented local, national, and international traumas. You did not choose to only focus on the 2020 trauma of the day… however, you found a way to stay safe and fight through quarantines, stay focused on learning, powered through missed sports and other celebratory events, and searched for meaning in the international quest for equality. Class of 2020, history will showcase your fight. Cheers to you and your many accolades and successes. The impressive list of scholarships and colleges you will attend speak for volumes for what you have achieved. Oh, to be 18 with a lifetime of promise and the limitless opportunities you will experience. One of my personal core philosophies is to focus on what you can control, and not on what you cannot control. I have preached this philosophy to my sons and I think it works pretty well. You will be faced with continuing and new challenges you cannot control. You do get to control how you meet and greet these challenges and you do get to choose your own path and who will share your journey. You always will have your family and friends for support. This includes your Camden Catholic family and friends. You will continue to build this support network in your important post-graduate years. Look to one another to keep focus on your priorities and on what you can control, so you can make a difference for you, and your family and community. I too am graduating this year, from your professional and talented Board of Trustees. It has been my pleasure to serve as a trustee for the last six years, first as finance chair and treasurer and the last three years as chairman. The Board has shared with you in the many successes and fought through with you the challenges that arise in a high school community from time to time. The Board is dedicated, highly educated, and focused on what is best for the Camden Catholic family. The Board is committed to providing insights and strategic guidance to your competent administration and has prioritized Catholic identity, cultural diversity, finance integrity, risk management, and strategic planning. In addition to time and talents, all trustees contribute generously each year to the annual fund. Thank you to the entire Board for all that you do for Camden Catholic, especially trustees Laurie Carrick and Peter Dooner who are completing their terms and graduating with me. Congratulations to the new Board executive committee: Jack Wixted, Chairman; Dennis Corbett, Vice Chairman; Jim Madden, Secretary; and Joe Kenney, Treasurer. Also, welcome to newly elected Trustees: Dr. Linda Carrick ‘71 and Anthony Giorgio ‘68. And finally, a resounding thank you to Fr. Joseph Capella, Mary Whipkey, and Heather Crisci for their steady excellence in steering the operation of Camden Catholic. I am proud of what we have accomplished working together, all for the good of Camden Catholic. The Camden Catholic family is strong. The Board of Trustees, administration, and faculty are dedicated educators, leaders, and scholars. Our students are accomplished, diverse, and destined for vast opportunities for success in academics, the arts, athletics, and whatever career or endeavor they may choose. Our alumni (welcome 2020 graduates) are highly successful by any measure and have become generous benefactors and role models for our current students and future generations of students. Despite the 2020 traumas, I encourage you to appreciate 2020 as a year of achievement and opportunity. Continue to fight for what is right and focus most on what you can control. As you appreciate the past and look to the future, always consider staying involved and helping the students who will follow you. It is at the core of your Faith, Honor, and Loyalty. It is you as you are Camden Catholic. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Camden Catholic family, congratulations class of 2020. For the green and the white, Go Irish! All the Best,

Jack Pund ’74 Chairman, Board of Trustees 3

$147,911 Raised! Irish Giving Day:

A Virtual Celebration Steps It Up! With months of planning behind us and a stepped-up celebration ready to go on March 17, 2020, the sixth annual Irish Giving Day was certain to be a historic event, and that it was, although not in the way we had planned. Thanks to our dynamic advancement team and the incredible support of our alumni, donors, students, faculty and friends, Irish Giving Day once again made history as a 100 percent virtual event which came so very close to our goal of $150,000. Now more than ever it is heartwarming to see how much our mission means to the hundreds of donors who participated by contributing to tuition assistance, the arts, athletics and various academic programs. New in 2020 was a special incentive for donors of $50 or more: the gift of CCHS socks! Almost 500 alumni and friends stepped up their giving and received these custom socks to show their Irish pride all throughout the year. Students and faculty also participated in the sock challenge with over 50 percent of the freshmen class purchasing a pair. Thanks to all who contributed in any way by donating, sharing our messages and reaching out to fellow CCHS supporters. We anticipate the 7th Annual Irish Giving Day on March 17, 2021. 4

CCHS SALUTES OUR ALUMNI HEALTHCARE HEROES & FRONTLINE WORKERS God Bless all of our alumni and current CCHS families who are working during the frontlines of the pandemic. Our prayers continue to be with you.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the father of mercies and the God of all consolation. He comforts us in all our affliction and enables us to comfort those who are in trouble, with the same consolation we have received from him. 2 Cor 1:3-4

A History-Making Class: The Seniors of 2020 Become Irish Legends

The class of 2020 celebrated milestones and suffered heartbreak this year with an unprecedented ending to their four years at CCHS. Despite the ups and downs, the class rallied together (albeit virtually) to enjoy their senior year with intense creativity, faith-filled joy and Irish pride. Here we feature a few graduates, just a snapshot, of the 174 students who helped to make this class one of the most memorable in Camden Catholic’s 133-year history.

MYA WHILES Attending: Spelman College As president and co-founder of T.H.E. (Together Honoring Everyone) Council, Mya cemented her place in CCHS history by leading fellow students and faculty in honoring the many diverse students and cultures which make Camden Catholic such a special place. Through Together Honoring Everyone, Mya helped to encourage all students to share their cultures with one another and to honor social justice as a Catholic Christian teaching. In doing so, she won a Seton Hall University essay contest and helped to launch several multi-cultural events which we hope will take place at CCHS on an annual basis. “T.H.E. Council allows for a safe space for dialogue and discussion about issues concerning social justice, Mya says. CC: What is the most vital lesson you learned while being a student at CCHS? MW: The most vital lesson that I have learned as a student at Camden Catholic is to be ambitious and to aim high, with confidence in yourself and your abilities. I learned to have faith and trust God wholeheartedly, even when it is difficult.

DANIEL HUANG Attending: Rhode Island School of Design Daniel’s artwork graces the halls of CCHS, from fine art sketches and paintings to eyeopening photography. He was honored with a merit scholarship to one of the nation’s finest design colleges, The New School, but has chosen to attend the even-higher ranked Rhode Island School of Design. CC: What legacy have you left at CCHS? DH: I’ve left a legacy which is both tangible and intangible. As president of the Art Honor Society for three years I hope I’ve left a strong sense of responsibility to future art students, a responsibility to create for your own well-being and for those around you. I’ve also left a tangible legacy through the various hallway murals of whose creation I was a part.

MARY GARDNER Attending: Catholic University*

*Editor’s Note: Mary deferred her acceptance for one year due to the pandemic. She is doing an internship at the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. Mary has the great honor of being the first CCHS student to fly across the Grandi Auditorium stage! As Mary Poppins, she thrilled and delighted audiences young and old with her performance, along with almost 100 fellow student-performers. Unfortunately, the successful run of the show was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, Mary leaves CCHS with fond memories of life under the lights and in the classroom. CC: What legacy have you left at CCHS?

MG: If I have made a mark at CCHS as it has made on me, I hope it is seen in the friendships I made which for me had the most positive of impacts. My last memory of high school, before the pandemic of 2020, is the closing night of our spring musical; Mary Poppins. In the many congratulations and well wishes I was stopped by the father of a freshman whom I had met earlier in the year on a performing arts field trip. He thanked me for befriending his teenager, who was nervous about the newness of high school and came home excited to share they had made a friend in a senior student. It was so kind of this dad to stop me and share this, but the fellowship and camaraderie that he was describing was one of the long lasting CCHS traditions which I'm glad I could pass down, as it was shown to me by another senior when I was that same freshman. In a more tangible sense I have "made my mark" in the CCHS auditorium, more specifically a prized stage manager podium that sits backstage where my initials are engraved with a few hundred other performing arts alumni, which again is a testimony of the continual community I'll share at CCHS.

9

DALTON FOSTER Attending: University of Connecticut Dalton was given the great task of continuing to grow “Mayor” George LeCato’s “Squad” concept, the CCHS fan group. Along with his co-leaders, Dalton was able to rally students to support all sports throughout the year, and concluded the year by announcing the creation of Squad Day, which will celebrate our entire community of student-athletes and our tremendous Irish pride. What did you learn about yourself and the history-making class of 2020 during quarantine? DF: I learned how connected we really are. Throughout four years, we have always been connected by the simple fact that we were all a part of the CCHS Class of 2020. However, before this year, I do not think anyone read too deeply into that or cared nearly as much as we do now. The COVID-19 pandemic managed to unite my class in a way I have never seen. People who barely knew each other or talked in school are now able to connect in new ways over this shared hardship and experience. Besides this, I learned that we are resilient, making the best of this unfortunate situation.

GABRIELLE MBOYA Attending: Rochester Institute of Technology Gabrielle earned honors throughout her time at Camden Catholic while also being a part of various spring musicals, the Creative Writing Club, managing the design of the 2020 yearbook and volunteering for the nonprofit Hugwraps. Her work ethic and creative outlook will serve her well as she focuses on becoming a food product developer while she studies at Rochester Institute of Technology. CC: What did you learn about yourself and the history-making class of 2020 during quarantine? GM: I learned that I should adopt a more stoic outlook on life: time will move forward whether we want it to or not, so it's important not to let anything negative affect our overall outlook and positivity in life, even if said situation drastically changes how we live. These last few months have also taught me how much I actually rely on others to keep moving forward. Even if we don't get to see each other as often as we'd like, we still support one another in our individual endeavors.

MATTHEW DENTON Attending: Haverford College As a top student, an accomplished athlete and a reliable classmate, Matthew Denton has already made CCHS proud, and we know he will continue to prevail in college and beyond. His college acceptances included scholarships to St. Joseph’s University, Seton Hall University, Rider University and Ursinus College. Matthew will attend and run track and cross country at one of the nation’s finest small liberal arts schools for higher education: Haverford College. CC: What is the most vital lesson you learned while being a student at CCHS? MD: Time fuels everything. Athletic and academic success, relationships, faith, and all the other endeavors I will pursue require a time commitment in order to reap benefits; in other words, how time is spent matters.

LAUREN OWENS Attending: Camden County College As a prominent leader among her classmates, Lauren made history for the class of 2020 by being the first senior governor to address her class virtually. She did this about eight weeks into quarantine to offer encouragement to her fellow seniors as they closed out senior year, as well as to read a special message from Mrs. Barbara Wagner Strasser ‘60. Mrs. Strasser had written a thoughtful letter to the seniors to let them know that her class of 1960 had also been through an unfortunate ending to senior year, however, she promised them that the CCHS sense of community and family would continue to bless them throughout their lives. CC: What is the most vital lesson you learned while being a student at CCHS? LO: One of the most vital lessons I learned at CCHS is inclusivity. After attending a public school in a small town, one of my favorite aspects of Camden Catholic was the possibility to meet people from not only many different areas, but from all over the world. The students and faculty at CCHS embrace diversity and culture in a way that is so special. I learned that no matter one’s likes, dislikes, interests, or differences, they can influence my perspective for the better. Meeting so many people with so many different backgrounds afforded me an opportunity to see how I am just a small piece in a much larger puzzle that is life.

Pam Palazzo Retires THE TRUEST EXAMPLE OF HONOR, FAITH & LOYALTY

Pam Palazzo, CCHS class of 1972, capped off her 43 years of teaching at Camden Catholic with her retirement this year. Her journey with the Irish, however, started even before that as a student.

ernment was probably my favorite.” Ms. Palazzo would occupy the roles of Senator as a sophomore, Lt. Governor as a junior, and Vice President of the student body as a senior.

“In my time, there was no question,” Ms. Palazzo said. “You went to CCHS. That’s just what you did.”

To cap off her high school career, Palazzo was the salutatorian of her graduating class, delivering the senior address at graduation. After graduating from Rutgers University, her path back to Camden Catholic began to form. “I was working another job,

To this day, she treasures her time as a student. “I loved high school more than anything. Student gov-

one that really wasn’t the best fit for me,” she recalled. That summer, however, a door would open. Palazzo and some friends, while staying in Sea Isle one weekend, ran into one of Palazzo’s former teachers, Camden Catholic Hall of Famer, Jack Phipps as he worked his summer job bartending at Henney’s. That night at Henney’s, Phipps told Palazzo he had a job that “she had to take.” Not long after, Pam Palazzo returned to Camden Catholic as a science teacher. “The hardest part was getting used to calling my former teachers by their first names,” she said, laughing. As time went on, Palazzo became more and more involved. She moderated and ran the student government, coached the Majorettes Marching Band, and even became the chair of the science department. “I’m proud of all that,” Palazzo continued. “But mostly I have a lot of memories of the students. I loved them. In the beginning, I was a little…up tight, but I got to be more mellow. As time went on, I could understand the kids more and more.”

Palazzo, it seems, is remembered just as fondly by her students. Elisa Gonzalez ’01, said, “[Palazzo] gave me personal study sessions and extra credit opportunities and went over just about every test and quiz with me. Ms. Palazzo [also] helped me excel in other ways like when she ran Academic Decathlon.” Gonzalez, reflecting on the dedication and patience, is still grateful. “Having kids myself now... I don’t have any idea how you did it but I’m sure glad you did.”

Tom Boyd ’03, also remembers Ms. Palazzo’s efforts to this day. “I was the president of Student Government in 2002-03 and she inspired me to run for office. Even though [Ms. Palazzo] was no longer in charge of Student Government, I would always go to her for advice and to answer questions I might have. She was always right on point and certainly was someone I admired in high school. I am very thankful and credit [Ms. Palazzo] with my involvement in Student Government to this day. I currently serve as the advisor of Student Government in the high school where I teach. Thank you, [Palazzo] for your many years of service to CCHS and the countless lives you have touched along the way, including mine.”

I’m proud of all that, Palazzo continued. But mostly I have a lot of memories of the students. I loved them.

In the end, it is bittersweet, but the Camden Catholic family could not be more grateful to count such a wonderful person in their number. Pamela Palazzo blessed everyone and everything around her for 43 years. “I’m going to miss it, but it was time to go,” Palazzo concluded. “I loved every minute of it.” Then, she laughed. “But I’ll be around. You’ll see me now and again, trust me.”

THE GREAT BOUNCE OF 2020 By James Keough ‘04

C

laire Marino stepped to the podium to deliver her senior address to the Class of 2020. There was a camera to her left that she did her best to ignore while speaking. Far to her right, another camera to pretend as if it weren’t there. In front of Claire, however, the opposite played out. In front of her, something very important wasn’t in the room, and she had to do her best to pretend that it—that they— actually were: her fellow classmates. As a faculty member, I can say that Friday, March 13th, was easily one of the strangest days I can remember. The day was driven by a suddenly urgent checklist: coordinating student email addresses for Google Classroom, going over hypothetical guidelines for virtual instruction, packing the essentials from your classroom, and finally, helping the students clear out their lockers. Until that last step, the immediacy of what was happening had been building, but not fully manifested in our halls and rooms. Seeing the empty lockers, the hypothetical had become a reality. COVID-19 had arrived, even if just in spirit, at Camden Catholic High School. I answered my students’ questions as best I could, but it was strange. What started as a “just in case” day filled with prudent measures ended with a feeling that we would not be back in the building the next week. Speculations ranged from a week to the fall, but the urgency had certainly come to stay. Finally, the time came for our daily farewell over the PA system. A special version of the traveler’s prayer, adapted to fit the coming challenge, was read. Then we heard the words that we heard every day: God bless. Go Irish. You are dismissed. My students filed out of the room with engorged

16

backpacks and armfuls of possessions. They seemed quieter than normal, rushing a bit more than usual to their buses and cars, but it was hard to sort one detail from another amid the enormous, pervasive strangeness that had arrived that day. ----On the day they were to film the proceedings for graduation, Claire’s arrival to school mimicked the strange duality of everything else: something familiar that had become somehow

strange and foreign. “I went to drop off my books and collect my locker contents,” Claire said, “And then I went inside—something I wasn’t quite sure I’d be able to do again as a student.” Walking to the auditorium, the strange emptiness was hard to ignore, but Claire’s mind was already on the bright side. “The day I delivered the speech was very special to me,” Claire explained. “I was beyond excited to hear that I would be able to give it in the auditorium because I thought I would have to film it at home and send in the recording.” Entering the auditorium, Claire was forced to reflect again on the strange duality of the moment, the familiar made foreign. In her time at Camden Catholic, Claire was an all-star on the stage. She’d landed numerous leads, performed in almost every choir. After all, she’d been on a performing arts scholarship to Camden Catholic. The stage and auditorium had been Claire’s home-away-from-home at Camden Catholic. “It was pretty emotional to be back in the auditorium, since that was the room I was in the last time I was in school,” Claire said. The school musical, Mary Poppins, had been cut short, delivering about half of their intended performances, by the timing of COVID’s arrival. Spring sports, clubs, and activities would soon follow. Still, Claire focused on the positive. “I felt blessed to be back inside a space I called home and give a speech that I was proud of…to people that I love, even if they weren’t sitting right in front of me while I spoke,” Claire continued.

THE GREAT BOUNCE OF 2020

So, to an empty auditorium, Claire delivered an account of hope. It was almost a message in a bottle for her class and anyone listening, both then and in the future. In her speech, Claire recalled a particular memory that stuck with her from her freshman year. A senior, rushing past, delivered a moment of assurance to another freshman that Claire lives by to this day: As he ran past, a freshman called out to the senior, “Guess what! I failed my math test!” Without stopping or missing a beat, he turned only his head and yelled to the freshman girl, whom I assume he knew, “It’s okay, you’ll bounce!” with utmost confidence. Since that day, the exclamation “You’ll bounce!” has been plastered on the front of my mind…Here it is again, bearing significant meaning in the most challenging period of my life. Claire then acknowledges that the identity of their graduating class will always be tied to this pandemic, to the state of the world at this time. We, the class of 2020, may forever be branded as “The Class that Graduated During the Pandemic.” However, our class will be remembered for so much more than that. It is up to us what we make of this, how we take this unique experience and turn it into part of our story. How will we bounce? I say, we already have...That is the heart that we have, and that is the heart that we will carry into everything that we do from now on…We will continue to bounce back and share our love with those around us, despite the cards we have been dealt this year. Interestingly enough, as Claire’s message of “bouncing” sounded out to the Camden Catholic community at large, affirmations of the community’s strength echoed back. -------On Friday, March 13, Camden Catholic had as much online presence as any pre-pandemic high school. Behind the scenes, however, weeks of observation and planning were clicking into place. Principal Heather Crisci noted the buildup of the previous weeks, “News during the beginning of March was quickly showing that CCHS, and all schools, needed a plan for online learning quickly. The administration developed a basic outline for expectations during virtual learning and put the technological structures in place for the faculty and students to transition to online learning within three days.” Urgency escalated that final weekend, Crisci explained, “We received notice on March 14

that we would be closing. Because we planned and were prepared, we took Monday, March 16 for professional development and started classes on March 17.” The speed and efficiency of the transition was a point of pride for Crisci. “I’m impressed with our teachers and students. The transition was made possible by the commitment of the community and our willingness to understand that we are all doing this together.” By that Tuesday, Camden Catholic was 100% online. Within a span of 72 hours, the entire educational program had successfully transitioned to a completely digital existence.

Finally, that Monday was a whirlwind of activity. Faculty, in that last 24 hours, attended professional development, set up Google Classrooms, posted expectations online, communicated with their students, and even posted video greetings and lectures. Zoom was discovered. Loom was perfected. Terms like screen casting, Kahoot, and discussion posts became vernacular. On the morning of Tuesday, March 17, the program assembled by administration, faculty, and staff was in place. Morning prayer, the pledge of allegiance, and announcements were delivered. Familiar faces delivered school news in an upbeat tone as 17

Feature | THE GREAT BOUNCE OF 2020 families tuned in online over breakfast. Material was assigned, taught, and reviewed. Assignments turned in. Attendance checked off. Camden Catholic, from head to toe and faculty to families, had reinvented itself. We had “bounced.” Noting the quick turnaround, Vice Principal Eileen Wilkinson said, “I began a class at Immaculata University the same week we transitioned to remote learning. My classmates explained that it would take their schools at least two weeks to begin teaching new material. I shared that we started immediately. My classmates were amazed. I was humbled by my CCHS colleagues, and very proud.” On the other side of the digital pipeline, families were also admirably adjusting. Parents and teenagers alike had new schedules, routines, patterns, and habits. The vast majority of assignments were on-time, students checked in with every teacher every day, projects evolved and continued, and communication remained constant and consistent. Students filed into Zoom classrooms, filling the screen like a strange spinoff of The Brady Bunch. Loom lectures, Whiteboard videos, and Google Classroom chats filled the day. School was in session.

CCHS classes moved online as students tuned in from their homes.

On the transition, Monica ‘91 and Drew DiBease, parents of Mattigan ‘21 and Jackson ‘22 said, “This [was] hard on everyone and we just want [everyone] to know that we appreciate you all. Camden Catholic is a special place and continues to feel like a family, even from our homes.” Camden Catholic had “bounced” from its most immediate setback in a way that could only have come to be through a united effort involving the entire Camden Catholic community. -------Camden Catholic’s “bounce,” however, was not limited to current members of the Camden Catholic family. Out in the world, alumni were on the front lines of the COVID crisis, helping themselves and others “bounce” back every day. Caroline Smith ‘17, a nursing student at Fairfield University, was one such alumna who

has helped her community “bounce.” Smith joined with three other nursing and engineering students to form the “Stags Shields Project.” Using a design they found online, the students consulted Fairfield administration to gain access to the school’s 3-D printers. After getting the all-clear, Caroline and her partners made use of the 3-D printers to achieve staggering results. To date, the group has crafted over 2000 masks that have provided essential workers with much needed PPE in dozens of hospitals, nursing homes, smaller medical facilities, and churches. “One of the most rewarding aspects of the Stags Shield Project was to be able to help protect our community and bring a sense of security to those who are on the front-lines,” Smith explained. “The amount of support for our project was amazing and I was overwhelmed by the number of people who shared the same passion for our project.” Another alum “bouncing” is Jennifer Varallo ‘12, whose last year at Rowan College of Osteopathic Medicine was cut short by the COVID crisis. Since then, Varallo became one of the founding members of the COVID-19 New Jersey Medical Student Coalition, helping to obtain incredibly valuable PPE for front liners, coordinate the delivery of that PPE, and fundraise for further needs and preparations.

has a strong presence on social media and manages a sprawling supply chain. As the project lead of the Supply Chain Initiative, Varallo has certainly “bounced” back from this crisis, both saving lives and vastly improving the quality of life for those affected by this crisis first hand. Finally, Isabella Dolente ‘13 is another CCHS alum that has “bounced” back and directly helped confront the COVID crisis. Dolente has been working as an ER nurse in Philadelphia throughout the growing crisis, standing out as a selfless example of sacrifice and support. “Working on the front lines of the COVID-19 response as an ER nurse has been an absolute rollercoaster of emotions,” Dolente said. “We had some days when the halls of the ER were silent and other days where you couldn’t even hear yourself think, because it was so nonstop with critical patients.”

Despite the harrowing challenges, Dolente’s perspective on her vocation hasn’t wavered. “It is frightening,” Dolente said. “Absolutely frightening as a nurse. But guess what? I wouldn’t change it for the world. I love my job and I love what I do. Helping people in the most critical moments of their lives is something that I want to be a part of. Making them better so they can eventually go home.” Her efforts moved her parents, Lisa and Carl ‘84, to create popular t-shirts that read, “Not All Heroes Wear Capes, My Daughter Wears Scrubs.” In addition to the t-shirts, the proud parents have been gathering and delivering important everyday items to Isabella and her coworkers. There are hundreds of CCHS alumni who, like Caroline, Jennifer and Isabella, have been a part of the frontline which has helped to protect and serve throughout the pandemic. Doctors, nurses, nurse-practitioners, police officers, transportation workers, grocery store managers, the list goes on. One only has to review the dozens of photos submitted by alumni and proud family members to begin to see the magnitude of those from our CCHS community who have stepped forward in service to others. A beautiful illustration of this is the weekly Irish Express service project which bounced into action in the first weeks of the pandemic thanks to CCHS Campus Ministry Director and alumna Jennifer Wilkins LaRosa ‘88. The Irish Express helps to provide meals and supplies to Cathedral Kitchen and Guadalupe Family Services in Camden, as a part of Camden Catholic’s Campus Ministry program. “I am overwhelmed by the response to the Irish Express,” says LaRosa. “I went from picking up and delivering one day a week to now four days a week. There are well over 150 families, alumni, faculty and staff, students, and friends of CCHS

who are participating. Many participate consistently every week.” Donations have included hundreds of cases of water and snacks, sandwiches, utensil packets and napkins, diapers, wipes and pullups. Camden Catholic High School is blessed to include people and families like this in their community, and it is a certainty that there are hundreds, if not thousands of stories similar to these. Without a doubt, there are members of the Camden Catholic family “bouncing back” all over the nation during this crisis, which is both a humbling and fulfilling thought. -------The generosity of the Camden Catholic community, as it turns out, was yet another thing that would sweep in during the first week to help the school “bounce back.” That generosity took the form of Irish Giving Day 2020. Despite occurring in the first week of quarantine, without its usual celebration and in-person presence and activity, Irish Giving Day 2020 was one of the most resoundingly successful fundraising initiatives in school history. Erica Richards Reilly ’86, on donating this year, said, “We donate to CCHS every year. It didn’t even cross my mind to not support my Alma Mater. We chose to donate to CCHS because I had a great experience and I want future generations to have those same experiences. When I look back, I am overwhelmed by the amount of support we had from teachers, administration, and the athletic department.” Without hesitation, the ambitious pre-pandemic goal of $150,000 was so closely met by alumni, families, independent donors, faculty, staff, and students who donated over $147,000. Elisa Gonzalez ’01, regarding her donation, said, 20

“While I live too far for my children to benefit from all CCHS has to offer, my contribution can help ensure that other kids will have the opportunity to attend. CCHS offers unique opportunities and perspectives that should be nurtured and encouraged to grow.” As an alumnus and faculty member, to see this steadfast support materializing in the background of that first week was amazing. To be reminded of how strong the community at home and abroad is was both perfectly timed and more generous than we could have hoped. -------On my end, as it was for many teachers, the year ended unceremoniously. A few clicks of a button, double checking spreadsheets online, a farewell message to my students, and it was over. There were thankful emails from students, families, and administrators. There were digital happy hours where the faculty could joke about how crazy the past few months had been and hope for a miraculous down-tick of the virus. But despite the many ways for students, teachers, and everyone involved to “see” each other, it wasn’t quite the same. There wasn’t a single person who wouldn’t say, “I wish we could go back. I wish we were there.” When we went in to clean out our rooms, our arrivals staggered and masks required, we were confronted with the same duality that Claire faced: something familiar that was now indescribably strange and foreign. Walking out of the school after cleaning my classroom, I can admit to wondering, “What now? Where do we go from here?” However, seeing the ingenuity and determination of the faculty, staff, and administration, hearing these amazing stories about alumni, witnessing the generosity of Irish Giving Day, being

relentlessly supported by our students and their families, watching Claire express the perspective that she has gained through four years to her classmates…it’s hard not to think that we will continue to “bounce.” -------As Claire concluded her senior address to an empty auditorium, one has to imagine the applause she would have received in person: We, as seniors, have all certainly grappled with feeling unlucky during our time at home. Despite all our undeniable blessings, we could not help but notice the weight of what was missing. What it took me a while to realize is that we may actually be luckiest of all. We are so lucky to have something worth missing. A new appreciation for those around us, the smallest moments of life, the opportunity to help, and the beauty of an ordinary school day knocked at our door. For once, we were all home to answer it. Now that we’ve welcomed this appreciation into our hearts and homes, we can pack it up in our suitcase right next to our photo albums and bring it with us wherever we go in the fall and everywhere else life takes us. I wish every one of you the best of luck in your undeniably bright futures. You should all be very proud of how far you’ve come, and I can’t wait for us to cheer each other on as we see how far we go. God bless, and go Irish. Thank you.

With that, Claire Marino smiled and walked offstage. Her message was concluded and tucked away for her friends, teachers, and family. Maybe, even, a freshman heard the message that day -- delivered by a senior they only knew in passing -- and will walk with it in their passage through our halls and beyond.

DEAR THE CLASS OF 2020, SINCERELY, THE CLASS OF 1960 April 2020 marked the 60 year anniversary of the infamous fire which destroyed much of the original Camden Catholic High School at 7th and Federal Streets in Camden. In reflecting on the anniversary of this historic event, a similarity was noticed between the graduating class of 1960 and the class of 2020. Both classes had their time at CCHS cut short by tragedy, for 1960’s seniors it was local, for the class of 2020, it was a worldwide pandemic. Members of the class of 1960 graciously wrote letters to members of the class of 2020 reflecting on their incomplete ending to senior year, and offered encouragement on how this class of seniors can hope to recover from their lost days at CCHS. An excerpt from one such letter from Mrs. Barbara Wagner Strasser ‘60 is featured below. In addition to Mrs. Strasser, CCHS would like to thank the following members of the class of 1960 for offering their words of support to our senior class: Bob Long, Carol Van Horn, Sue Huesken, Victor Mignona, Jackie Agostini, Helena Volansky and Al Franks.

...On Easter Sunday evening we got the word, either from the television or calls made to each other (no cells or internet usage available) that our beloved school was on fire. Living in East Camden it was easy for me to get to school. I went to CCHS with some friends and while we were roped off in a safe area, we could hear the crackle of fire, watch the flames reach to the sky so it seemed, and smell the acrid odor of a building on fire. I could see the Convent burning, but we knew all the Sisters had been safely removed. The old Lyceum as it was known, was almost totally destroyed. That was a very old wooden building when we were there. The boards in the building were slanted in areas and they creaked. There was no late arrival at any class without detection. That is my sentimental recollection of a night that redirected our paths as seniors in 1960. In looking at my yearbook, I saw no mention of the fire. Of course the papers were filled with information. It is likely that we had a few days or a week of extended vacation while the good Sisters and others planned for the next step. Juniors and seniors returned to class for the morning session, while the underclassmen came in the afternoons. This schedule continued until the new and lovely CCHS home which you occupy, was completed in Cherry Hill several years later. In all of this, it is to my mind, those classes that followed us who are the real heroes in all that transpired. Their high school experiences were a bit disrupted, but they carried on and did great. So, what has become of a class that experienced a sad and uneventful end to our senior year? Being in the midst of the worldwide pandemic of Covid-19, we all share in these difficult times...We remember and pray for those who died or are ill, but this experience has disrupted the young of our nation who are in the prime of their lives. It seems that a curtain has come down to cause distress. However, that really is not the case. You have had an opportunity to see a country pool its resources, pull together and show generosity. It is a time to go beyond your abilities, tap your unknown talents, give to others your time and ideas. This could turn out to be the best family time you’ll ever remember. You have the ability to use technology to continue learning, experiment with new interests such as cooking family meals, learning to sew masks, shop for those who are older and cannot get out or because of their age should not...You are in the arena of leadership. We depend on our youth to inspire us with their creativity and strength. You shine brightest when put to the test, and you are now and will be for a while longer, in that place. As for our class. We went on to varied careers, vocations, and for most of us fulfilling lives. We lost some classmates very early after graduation, which was sad for us...We remain a very close class in fact because we went through sadness, disappointment and an abrupt change to our plans. We were grateful that no one perished in the fire. We spent many days cleaning dirty and smokey items, because the Sisters led us on in the spirit that we were taught and embraced. You will do the same. Our paths in life cannot always be straight, but onward you will go. Think about the lovely verse in Robert Frosts’ poem, The Road Less Traveled. Taking the road less traveled can, for you, make all the difference. You are not alone, as we all rise to the occasion asked of us now and most likely in the future. We have our faith, we have love for each other, and always there is hope. Wishing you happiness, success in what you wish to accomplish. Congratulations to all as you go forward! Go Irish! Arts AT CCHS

THE

We Are Not Alone:

The Arts at CCHS Recap 2019-2020 By Gregory Gardner ‘11, Arts Faculty

Amid the challenges we face each day, we are not alone. When I think back to my happiest memories as a Camden Catholic student, they’re often found in practice and rehearsals. While final performances under the lights were exhilarating celebrations of our work, the greatest satisfaction was the journey; the daily interactions in a community that was formed through taking risks in the form of singing, dancing, playing an instrument, acting out characters, making mistakes, and the development that occurs throughout the creative process. I will forever be grateful to Camden Catholic, my teammates, and my teachers for providing a safe space and building the community in which to develop these invaluable skills of expression. Teaching at Camden Catholic, my experiences in music and education continue to reaffirm how the arts connect and lift people up. While we develop and share our talents in 22

collaboration with one another, we not only achieve remarkable results, but we do so while feeling an overwhelming sense of love and support. It is my greatest hope that students will recognize this relationship through their experiences, realize that they are never alone, and that they have countless opportunities to

use their skills, faith, education, and memories to continue building community wherever they go! Mr. Patrick Gardner ‘15 and I began this year with choir and band camp at the end of August. We used the camp to welcome new students, share memories from the summer, and prepare music for the masses and football games at the beginning of September. We started rehearsals with our recessional hymn, “I Am With You Always.” The verses largely come from Psalm 25, a prayer for guidance and deliverance, and the refrain is taken from the end of Matthew 28, which states: ‘I am with you always, to the close of the age, go out and make disciples, and know that I am there.’ The song quickly became an anthem for the year, and an inspiring prayer for guidance and wisdom amid yearly challenges. This theme was present during each of our events this year: it was present during the end of our Cabaret concerts when everyone CCHS Magazine

2020

crowded around the piano to sing the Alma Mater, during our field trip to the Walnut Street Theatre, during our fall play (12 Angry Jurors) with the audience on stage around the performers, during the development of The Band Room Sessions filmed concert series, during our Lessons and Carols and Christmas concerts, during our Broadway field trip to Dear Evan Hansen, which echoed our theme with songs like “You Are Not Alone,” and during the involvement of over 100 students, faculty, and parents to produce our spring show, Mary Poppins. It was present in all the inspiring teachers that I watched work with our students this year in Shakespeare troupe, swing dance, rock band, dance team, choir, theatre casts, crews, and pit band. It was present in the parents working to build set pieces, cook meals, and support our students in countless ways throughout the year’s events and field trips. The quarantine was really difficult, particularly for our seniors, as we had to cancel our remaining shows, trips, and concerts. However, there was already so much to be grateful for, and I am proud of our students for how they remained positive during this greatest challenge of the year. It was at this time that we needed our guiding theme more than ever, and we created a virtual choir rendition of “I Am With You Always.” The virtual choir was an opportunity to come together, lift up our community, and show that we were resilient in this new challenge together. The video went viral with several local news stories and a national story run by NPR. I am still amazed by the amount of kindness received in my inbox during the release. Since then, we have released several more performances, cabarets, and even a Final Night Spring Concert, which you can view on YouTube.

I shared the following thought with Catholic University when they reached out about the project: Today, while we are social distancing, it’s easy to feel hopeless at a time of great suffering while stuck at home. However, now we find that greater opportunity to lead with mercy, while embracing the acts of mercy from others that we need ourselves. The role we can play is to share comfort and light in the lives of others: call a grandparent, teach someone through video calls, teach someone how to video call, sing, make music, tell stories, play games, share generously, and pray together. Amid the challenges we face each day, we are not alone. This was our theme all year. Yes, quarantine was a new challenge that changed our perspective, forced us to think creatively about new ways to connect, and left

us craving for in-person interactions after being denied access. However, Camden Catholic and the performing arts program was challenging students all year to connect, build community, and lift people up. I think this graduating class will have the lesson profoundly printed in their hearts and minds, and I am all the more encouraged about the impact, connections, and communities they will make in their next chapter. What a wonderful year for the performing arts! I am very grateful for our parents, students, teachers, and the experiences we have had as a community together. Looking forward to being back together again soon, and until we sing again, shine bright, remember to guide others into that same light, and as always, Go Irish!

Coming Together in Service to Others By Jennifer LaRosa ‘88, Director of Campus Ministry

I will forever be grateful for my Camden Catholic education. It has shaped me as a person and has provided me with a strong faith-filled foundation that has influenced every decision in my life. God had a plan for me. Returning home to Camden Catholic this year has been the greatest blessing for me and I feel extremely thankful for the opportunity to serve the community as the Campus Minister. It has certainly been a memorable year! Essential to the development of our community is the emphasis on faith formation and spiritual development. Fr. Kennedy, the CCHS Director of Catholic Identity, and I worked alongside our Rector, Fr. Joe, to map out what the year would look like for our entire community. We realized how important and essential this piece is to the holistic Camden Catholic education. The priority was that faculty and staff, our students, and our school families all feel the

24

Annual Vocations Day at CCHS importance that Campus Ministry would bring to the atmosphere on campus. Celebrating Mass together is something very special at Camden Catholic, which is why we plan many opportunities throughout the year to worship and pray together. The preparation for our liturgies included not only our students, who serve in various ministry roles, but our faculty and staff, many who proudly serve as lectors and Eucharistic Ministers.

Camden Catholic's unique approach to spiritual development is administered through a variety of retreat options offered on and off-campus. This year, our students attended March for Life, Kairos, Service Retreats, the Freshmen Retreat Experience, Catholic Athletes for Christ, Catholic Performers for Christ, Young Women and Men’s Retreats, and many more. These retreats are developed and facilitated by the Senior Honors Christian Ministry students and provided an opportunity for students to step away from their regular schedule and focus on their relationship with God and others. Our students are not the only ones benefiting from the retreats offered on campus, our faculty are also given the opportunity to participate in special retreat experiences designed just for them. In the fall our faculty retreat centered around music reflection, prayer meditation, and Christian Service. We had a wonderful day together!

The Christian Service Program perhaps had the biggest shift of all in 2020. The focus was on getting our students out into the especially underserved community, communities, helping the most fragile and compromised human beings. We jumped right into our new routine. Every week we served these communities by helping with the dinner service at Cathedral Kitchen, tutoring the children at Saint Anthony of Padua and stocking the shelves at the Cherry Hill Food Pantry. Additionally, our National Honor Society students worked together to cook meals for the families at Ronald McDonald House regularly. All of our students felt the joy of giving back and realized their importance in living out their baptismal call of helping others, and the more they served, the more they wanted to keep doing it. These outreach programs provided an example to our students of how they can put their faith and what they learned in the classroom into action. Watching our students compassionately serve the poor, lovingly work with students of various disabilities, and generously share their time, personal gifts and talents, is a true celebration of humanity and I am thrilled to work alongside them. The Campus Ministry office is a place of peace, filled with comfy chairs and stressreducing activities. It is a place for everyone to come together to share ideas, plan retreats and service projects, pray and reflect, and just be together in a very relaxed setting, something teenagers today need. Then, COVID-19 happened. Never could I have imagined my first year as Campus Minister ending the way this year has concluded. I distinctly remember the atmosphere at Camden Catholic on Friday, March 13, 2020. It felt as though we were expecting an extended snowstorm. Students

were emptying their lockers and exchanging hugs as we were reassuring them that everything would be okay. Little did we know that day would be our last day in the building for the remainder of the school year. The announcement that we would be moving to online learning came unexpectedly, but we reacted quickly. Teachers prepared their academic courses online within two days, but the Campus Ministry office was faced with a different challenge. We were not an academic course, yet we were essential to the spiritual nurturing of our community. Our main goal was to keep our students, faculty, staff, and school families connected as we worked independently.

COVID-19 pandemic certainly made it challenging to minister to the poor and hungry, but nothing was going to stop us from doing all we could to help those most vulnerable. Without hesitation, the Irish Express ministry emerged. In times like these, it is natural for people to want to help in any way they can, which was the unanimous feeling at Camden Catholic. I did not want to ask any of our families, alumni, faculty, staff, or friends to venture out at the time, and so, the Irish Express was created to do curbside pickups from members of the Irish community. Anyone interested in donating food and much-needed supplies was welcome to participate. As the weeks progressed, the Irish Express grew immensely, and I was coordinating curbside pickups all over South Jersey. We began supplying food to Cathedral Kitchen, the Cherry Hill Food Pantry, and baby items to Guadalupe Family Services every single week. What I loved most was that I was able to meet so many of our school families and our cherished alumni. It became

During these days when we are physically distant from one another, our bonds remain strong. We made the best of a challenging situation by engaging in one-on-one conversation through zoom, online retreats, daily prayers, and scripture passages posted on Instagram, Facebook, and in our Google Classroom. We remain committed to taking care of one another in every way possible. Our service to those in need is at the heart of who we are at Camden Catholic, and we had made some major strides with our presence in the community throughout the year. The an opportunity to reconnect with faculty and staff. Most importantly, from a distance and wearing a mask, of course, I was able to see and reconnect with many of our amazing students throughout my travels and weekly pickups.

Cherry Hill Mayor, Hon. Susan Shin-Angulo spoke with students at the Young Women's Retreat

As we continue to move forward, Campus Ministry is alive and well at Camden Catholic. Whether we are together at school or connected by faith, our commitment to each other and serving others remains at the heart of who we are and all we do. I look forward to seeing the members of our community continue to work as the hands and feet of Christ, bringing His light and love to all those in need.

Helen Arberter Gambogi is still proud to say she graduated from CCHS seventy-three years after graduation. Claire Marie Cybulski Foster of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2020. Her daughter Lilibet Foster provided some details of Claire’s life. From childhood she yearned to travel, so she started her adventure with American Airlines, managing a V.I.P. ticket office on Wall Street in New York City. She moved on to McGettigan’s Travel Bureau in Philadelphia where she was offered the chance to travel more extensively. Soon she was invited to the opening of the elegant Virgin Isle Hotel, in St. Thomas, where she immediately fell in love with the island. While staying at Galleon House on Government Hill, she became friendly with the owners and shared with them how she had always dreamed of running a guesthouse. They told her to ask again in 15 years. Two years and two trips later she was offered a job at Travel Services on Main Street, where she started in January 1961, and soon became a manager. Shortly thereafter she met an Englishman, John Foster. Claire realized her dream in the summer of 1961when she had the chance to run Galleon House. The following year, after she and John were married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, they bought the guesthouse, which Claire lovingly managed. Claire and John were blessed with two children Johnny and Lilibet. Parenthood inspired her involvement in the founding of Montessori school. Later, she joined her husband’s firm, John Foster Real Estate. A lifelong and devout Catholic, she served as Lector, Eucharistic Minister, the leader of many prayer groups and pilgrimages, and was presented to John Paul II in Rome, Italy. 32

She was a longtime member of The Papal Foundation, West Indian Franciscans, Inner Wheel Club, Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, where she also served as secretary for over twenty years, and she was instrumental in the founding of the Knights of Malta Virgin Islands Area and St. Thomas Yacht Club. Claire and John loved their residence in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where they relocated after hurricanes Irma and Maria damaged their home on St. Thomas. Sadly, medical problems prevented her from returning to her beloved St. Thomas residence.

A Letter from the President Mrs. Mary Whipkey

Dear Alumni and Friends of Camden Catholic: As we navigate through this pandemic, the Camden Catholic community is turning crisis into opportunity. Because our culture has been rooted in the values of the Sisters of Mercy, inspired by the life of Catherine McAuley, we have “bounced” and responded to the educational and spiritual needs of our families. We are living the core values of the Sisters of Mercy by responding spiritually through our daily masses. Our school families have commented on our ability to create community through prayer during our time of isolation. Our alumni and school community responded to our campus minister’s call to action of service through our “Irish Express,” donating much needed supplies to Cathedral Kitchen and Guadalupe Family Services. All who donated to our Mercy Fund, providing tuition assistance to current school families during the pandemic, demonstrated the Sisters of Mercy call to social justice and works of mercy. Sister Mary, Sister Philomena, Sister Pat Kenney and many other Sisters would be so proud of how we have responded to this crisis. Catherine McAuley said, “the tender mercy of God has given us one another.” We are so thankful to have the gift of our alumni and friends of Camden Catholic who have given back to a place that gave them so much. What other community could come so close to their Irish Giving Day goal in light of the country experiencing a shut down of the economy! Our hearts are full of pride and gratitude to have experienced this Irish spirit. As we plan for the unknown future, we must keep this Mercy spirit in our hearts and actions. We must seize this as an opportunity to think about the future of Catholic education and Camden Catholic High School. Now, more than ever, we need your support for the Annual Fund, for creating scholarships in a loved one’s name, for thinking about our future in your personal planned giving. Thank you for your continued support. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any ideas or suggestions you may have to help with the funding of Catholic education, here at Camden Catholic, or ways to reconnect with your alma mater. More than ever we need your prayers so we can continue to keep the Mercy values at the core of all we do. We will “bounce” through this crisis and continue to seize the opportunity. In gratitude,

Mary Whipkey President “The simplest and most practical lesson I know...is to resolve to be good today, but better tomorrow. Let us take one day only in hands, at a time, merely making a resolve for tomorrow, thus we may hope to get on taking short, careful steps, not great strides.” – Catherine McAuley, Foundress, Sisters of Mercy

Thank you! As we enter into a new decade, we know how important the support of alumni and friends of Camden Catholic is to this extraordinary institution. To sustain Catholic education for all into the new decade, we will need to grow the foundation of donations built by many faithful donors. Thank you to all our alumni and friends of Camden Catholic who are listed in this annual report who have been the cornerstone of our giving. No matter how small or large your donation, you have contributed to changing teenagers lives by assisting in their spiritual and academic formation.

ALUMNI CHALLENGE We welcome new classmates to join their class year honor roll with a new donation for the new fiscal year. As you can see in this Annual Report there are many active classes paying tribute to their spiritual and academic formation by making a gift to the Annual Fund.

Can Each Class Reach 10% in Giving? Imagine each class: 10 more donors per class at $100 each is $1,000 = about an increase of $80,000 20 more donors per class at $100 each is $2,000 = about an increase of $160,000

We challenge your class to help sustain Catholic education for the future.

How does the Annual Fund help Camden Catholic? • About 44% of the school’s families receive tuition assistance… as tuition continues to climb we need to assist more families • About 21% of the students receive merit-based scholarships… as we continue to attract high caliber students • About 5% of our instructional budget is allocated to technology…to stay current in academia we need additional funds to supplement this budget • About 10% of our budget is for athletics, performing arts, and extracurricular activities…our annual fund can enhance these activities to continue attracting students • Much of our professional development monies are grantrelated and dependent on the state budget…to have excellent up-to-date teachers we need to augment these funds • Our security monies are grant related and dependent on the state budget… to supplement these monies we need additional funds

When it came to his church and community, the word “no” was never an option! He was a man of strong faith in God, love for his family, and overall passion for life. They have agreed to $2,500 for four years to a deserving student from St. Rose.

JOIN US! There are so many ways to make a difference. Which will you choose?

THE ANNUAL FUND The greatest number of gifts to CCHS are unrestricted cash donations to the Annual Fund. Annual Fund gifts can also be restricted to tuition assistance, arts or athletics, including specific sports. These gifts make strides toward helping us maintain a competitive value proposition for families seeking a Catholic education for their children.

The Shamrock Society The Shamrock Society is our giving club for donors who contribute $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund each year. Members of this society send an outward message that they know Camden Catholic and its students are a worthy investment.

Tuition Assistance Approximately one third of our students receive some form of tuition assistance based on a standardized assessment of financial need. Your gifts help each of our families continue to choose Catholic education. All recipients are chosen based upon academic performance and demonstrated financial need. Why Tuition Assistance Matters For years, the Sisters of Mercy were able to contribute their services to Camden Catholic High School to reduce the cost of tuition, thereby making a Catholic education affordable for families. Today, the rising costs of healthcare and technology attribute to a higher cost of education, and tuition must be increased accordingly. What can I do? • Contribute to tuition assistance and you will afford a student the opportunity to find themselves, uncover talents, grow academically and spiritually, and develop leadership skills for a 21st century world. • Named scholarships can both support a student and honor a living individual, family, group, or memorialize a loved one.

Other Ways To Contribute Stock – Camden Catholic accepts gifts of securities, please contact the Advancement Office for required forms. Matching Gifts- Many corporations now support private secondary education through matching gifts. Check to see if your company offers a matching gift program, and multiply the impact you’re already making at Camden Catholic. In Memoriam - You, or your family, can choose to recommend gifts to Camden Catholic in lieu of flowers within an obituary. If you wish the gifts to be restricted to a specific purpose please contact the Advancement Office at the time of the obituary’s publication.

LEGACY GIVING Please visit www.cchslegacy.org or call the Advancement Office at 856-663-2247 for more information on ways to make a lasting contribution to Camden Catholic.
