Cambridge Life Competencies Activity Cards
Our world is changing fast, and a key part of our job as teachers is to prepare our students with the skills and experiences that go beyond simply learning an additional language. We need to enable them to succeed in further education or the world beyond the classroom too.
The Cambridge Life Competencies Framework provides a map of the most important life skills. Importantly, it allows teachers to gain a deeper understanding of what each of the competencies involves. One of the foundation layers in the Cambridge Life Competencies Framework is Digital Literacy. Let’s unpack what this means…
The importance of Digital Literacy
Digital Literacy skills are crucial in helping students become lifelong learners. Ever-changing advancements in digital technologies are resulting in new and flexible ways of working, studying and engaging with the world. For our learners to make the most of the opportunities and face the challenges that digital technologies and online environments provide – both now and in the future – it is essential that they become digitally literate.
Teaching Digital Literacy
We want you to feel comfortable teaching Digital Literacy in your classroom, whether that’s in person or via remote learning. But we also know that many teachers may be restricted to teaching from a particular coursebook and encouraged not to ‘stray’ from the material. Lesson time may be limited, learners may be expected to complete coursebook units within a set period of time, and teachers may not have easy access to supplementary materials. Perhaps as a teacher you’re just beginning to explore Digital Literacy and need activities to try out with your learners? Perhaps you’ve identified specific areas in which your learners need to develop, but your coursebook is lacking in guidance on how to teach these?
Free Digital Literacy activity cards
To help address all of these issues, we’ve now created activity cards for teaching Digital Literacy. Better yet, we’ve integrated these into the Cambridge Life Competencies Activity Card packs.
There are three packs of cards available: cards for teaching Young Learners, cards for teaching Teenage Learners, and cards for teaching Adult Learners. Each activity card in the pack tackles a component from one of the core Cambridge Life Competencies. The activities are designed for you to use together with your coursebook or teaching materials, enabling you to tweak or supplement tasks, integrating the development of learners’ life competencies into your teaching practice. Download them by scanning the QR code.
Read more about how to use the Digital Literacy activity cards on our ELT Blog.

Cambridge English opens doors to the world. It’s valuable for travel, exploring job opportunities, and pursuing further education.
Meet Liesbeth Elbers: inspiring young minds at Lingecollege Mavo in Tiel
For over a decade, Liesbeth Elbers has passed on her passion for English to her students. As a dedicated educator, she doesn’t just teach English – she transforms it into an exciting journey of discovery. Her innovative approach led her to establish a highly successful Cambridge project (B2/C1 levels) at her school, empowering students to achieve internationally recognised qualifications and opening doors to global opportunities. What Liesbeth loves most about teaching is the interaction with students and the opportunity to work alongside young teachers who are still finding their way in secondary education.
“It’s such a collaborative process, and they keep me on my toes, which is great. Every day is different, and there's never a dull moment. But the most rewarding part is being part of the students’ journey –helping them become independent learners and seeing them succeed.”
Why do your students learn English?
My students learn English for a variety of reasons. For many, it’s a language they’re already exposed to in their daily lives—whether they’re playing video games, watching movies and TV shows, or using social media. English is everywhere, and they start to recognise and use it naturally. Beyond that, English really opens doors to the world. It’s useful for traveling, finding job opportunities, and pursuing further education. I also see that many students enjoy learning English because they’re good at it, which boosts their confidence.
What has your experience of working with Cambridge been like?
I really appreciate how Cambridge continues to develop new resources and makes them easily accessible to teachers. The materials are user-friendly and practical, which is a huge benefit in the classroom. For example, I use Open World A2 Key, Open World B1 Preliminary and Open World B2 First for my courseware. Additionally, I make use of Cambridge One which is a fantastic tool for both students and teachers. It provides students with easy access to practice materials and exam preparation, making learning more efficient and interactive.
The courseware also encourages students to take more control over their own learning. It helps them become more independent, which is a key part of the learning process. I also find the teacher’s book incredibly helpful—it offers a wealth of ideas, especially when it comes to differentiating instruction for both higher-level and lower-level students, which makes it easier to cater to individual needs.
“Cambridge English Qualifications have truly opened doors for my students, helping them realise they can achieve more than they initially believed. It’s been rewarding to watch them develop not only as learners but as individuals. For me, it’s been a learning experience as well. My students inspire me to continually grow and become a better teacher. They push me to keep learning alongside them.”
How do you assess and monitor students’ progress toward achieving Cambridge English Qualification benchmarks?
One of the things I focus on is helping students learn how to assess their own work. I incorporate free tools in the classroom that encourage them to reflect on their own progress and identify areas for improvement. Cambridge offers a wide range of materials that I can use directly in class to target different language skills, which has been incredibly helpful. For example, Speak & Improve or Write & Improve tools.
Before students take the actual exam, we always do a mock exam at school. I think it’s important because it gives students a clear picture of where they stand. It also helps them understand the specific areas they need to focus on to improve, so they go into the real exam with a better sense of what to expect and how to perform at their best.
How do you use Cambridge Exam Preparation Journey materials to fit the needs of your MAVO students?
The beauty of these materials is that they’re offered at different levels, which means there’s something for every student. This flexibility allows me to tailor the materials to meet individual needs—whether it’s providing extra support for students that require more support or offering more challenging content for others. This adaptability makes it possible to ensure that every student can progress at a pace that suits them, while still working within the same framework.
How do you emphasise to your students that English language skills are beneficial beyond academic success?
My goal is for students to learn to make learning language skills their own, rather than solely focusing on what they need for a test. Whenever I introduce a new topic or skill, I always try to connect it to their own world and experiences. I encourage them to see the importance and practical use of the language beyond the classroom, whether it’s in their future careers, traveling, or simply engaging with the world around them. By making those connections, I help them understand that the language skills they’re developing are tools they can use throughout their lives, not just for passing an exam.
“Over the past five years, we’ve achieved a 100% success rate for Cambridge English Qualifications at both B2 and C1 levels at my school. This success proves that when you give students the right support and the opportunity to rise to the occasion, anything is possible, for MAVO, HAVO, and VWO.”
