L

ooking back over my time as president of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, it is remarkable how quickly a year can whiz by – which is something I’ve heard from many former presidents during my time on the board. It felt like I was just getting started and it was over – but then I got to thinking about all that our team achieved during my time as president.

• The NB government implementing the recommendations of the WorkSafeNB task force – stabilizing rates and leaving a sustainable system - will have a positive impact on the business community for years to come.

• We submitted two policy resolutions to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, which were both adopted by delegates.

One was aimed at making it easier to retain international students and one regarding twinning Highway 185 in Quebec.

• Our election advocacy had a major impact on the various political parties.

’m honoured to be the incoming president for 2019-2020. Thank you to Ryan Boyer for his leadership this past year, and farewell to Keir Clark, who will be leaving the board after serving his last year. I follow on the heels of dedicated and impressive leadership and I look forward to a very rewarding year.

If you don’t know this already, you are a member of an award-winning, nationally respected chamber. I’m serious. I’ve had the privilege of attending three Canadian Chamber of Commerce annual confrences and our Fredericton team is well-known, well-respected and for many, the model of how a chamber should be. We have a very engaged board of directors, and many committee members who support the chamber staff in their activities.

Finding people to volunteer with the Fredericton chamber doesn’t seem to be a problem, which speaks volumes for this very well-run organization.

I joined the Chamber Board after being involved in various committees over the past fifteen years. Joining the board was eye-opening. The amount of advocacy work is staggering. The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce IS the voice of business, and that voice IS heard and respected.

he work of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce would be impossible without the dedicated participation of our volunteers and our members. As we head into the summer, at the completion of another great year of chamber activities – I would like to recognize some of those who have contributed to making our chamber the best it can be.

First, to President Ryan Boyer – your dedication and contribution of time and talent have been second to none. We’ve all heard the adage about getting busy people to do volunteer work... well, Ryan personifies this! A small business owner (Cain Boyer Benefits), who, together with his wife Jackie is raising three young children, Ryan has stepped up to the plate as President of the Chamber for 2018-2019 with alacrity!

Meetings too countless to keep track of, committees both participating and chairing, speeches on a regular basis, and advocacy from the day he began his term ‘til the completion. The business community owes a huge thanks to this devoted volunteer.

Next, to incoming President Karen Grant – you have a big year ahead of you – but you are ready for the challenge having been involved with the chamber for more than 15 years in various volunteer capacities.

The team and I are so excited to work under your leadership and learn from your vast experience as a business owner and community volunteer in the coming year.

he New Brunswick Association for Community Living (NBACL/ANBIC) is a provincial, non-profit organization that works with and on behalf of children and adults with an intellectual or developmental disability and their families. We are a proud member of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce.

Persons with disabilities require the means to maximize their independence, make their own decisions and enhance their well-being. They require full access to the social, cultural, educational, legal, economic and physical infrastructure that support our society, so they can participate fully and equally in their communities.

NBACL has long recognized the important role employment plays in developing self-esteem, building connections to community, fostering independence, and contributing to the economy. This is no different for persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities.

Ready, Willing and Able (RWA) is a federally-funded national partnership of the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL), the Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorders Alliance (CASDA) and their member organizations. RWA is designed to increase the labour force participation of people with an intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) across Canada.

Corinne Arseneau works as the RWA Labour Market Facilitator for New Brunswick. She works with the NBACL to maximize employment opportunities. In her role she provides relevant information regarding the benefits of hiring persons with an intellectual or developmental disability, emphasizing their capabilities, and clearly demonstrating how this will benefit the employer and the business or organization.

Across the country, many jobs go unfilled because individuals with an intellectual disability or ASD are not considered as

Busy Women – The Property Ladies

B

efore the days of Linkedin, there were head-hunters. Recruiters, I mean: paid professionals hired to find the right person for the right job. “That was interesting work,” recalls Fanny Bodart, who was a recruiter in Europe for a company called Nicholson International.

“It was not always easy, but the most interesting things are not easy.” As I interview Fanny, sitting across a small desk from her at Fredericton’s entreprenurial hub, Planet Hatch, I begin to understand that almost nothing in her life has been easy. I also get the impression of a steadfast, pragmatic woman, who has conquered most of life’s profoundest problems without ever stopping to notice.

Now, as the owner of newly-incorporated, independent real estate brokerage, The Property Ladies, and the mother of four grown children, most of whom have left home to settle successfully in other Canadian cities, maybe she has time to reflect on her victories. Or maybe not. She seems busy.

After finishing law school, Fanny Bodart began her career as a human resource professional in Brussels, living next to the international airport, in the suburb of Zaventem, where Boeings and Airbusses shook her house and everyone inside it at clockwork intervals. For the most part,

life and work were great, but when her oldest child’s first word was not “mama,” nor “papa,” but “vliegtuig,” the Dutch word for airplane, she started considering the possibility that a move might be in her future.

You could say the decision was made for her. In the early 2000s, she became a single mother of four children in total (Tina, Victoria, Max and Charlotte), which made it understandably difficult to be a full-time international recruiter. Then, Nicholson International went out of business, her mother passed away, and her divorce was finalized all at about the same time, and suddenly life was a blank slate.

“Canada was almost never in the news, which I liked because it meant nothing bad was happening.”

She came to New Brunswick on the PNP entrepreneurial stream. During two exploratory visits, she took the opportunity to buy a house, a car, a fridge and a stove, and to arrange for just enough beds and transportation from the airport. When she returned to Belgium, she discovered that her youngest daughter, Tina, who was only one at the time, had hip dysplasia and needed an

operation. So in between the exploratory visits and the final voyage, Fanny and her other children (who ranged between the ages of seven and twelve) rallied around their youngest cohort. Tina was in the hospital for two weeks, and had only just been released when it was time for the flight to Canada. Thus, with four children in tow, one in a double hip cast as heavy as a mini-fridge, plus a friend’s 18-year old daughter who was supposed to be rendering her assistance as a nanny, Fanny threaded her way through three major airports: Brussels, Heathrow, and Montréal, missing a connection, losing luggage, trying over and over to contact her Canadian driver and apprise him of changes to her travel itinerary.

In Montréal, the bleary-eyed, somnambulating family finally found their way to the plane bound for Fredericton.

“They never slept on any plane or airport floor, but in that last flight ... they fell asleep, all of them,” recalls Fanny. “By that time, I had these big glazed eyes, and the stewardess said ‘do you want a beer, hon?’ and I said ‘yes!’” She had two.

They were on the house.

The children awoke the next day in Douglas, New Brunswick. Except for beds, appliances, excited children and the racket arising therefrom, the house was empty.

BIMP/HIVE The first thing she did was to drive to the Douglas Irving for groceries. Home again, and having recovered from the shock of a convenience store grocery bill, she began cooking her first Canadian breakfast and heard a knock on the door. It was the neighbours, who knew that the family had only just landed, and wanted to know if they needed anything. Chairs for one thing. “We lived there for five years, and we’re still in touch with them. We call them our Canadian grandparents.”

Fanny would never forget their hospitality, and she’s been paying it forward to other newcomers ever since.

In the month that followed, her children adapted seamlessly to Canadian life. “My 7-year-old [Victoria] only spoke Flemish.

She would go out and introduce herself to neighbours in Flemish. In a couple of weeks she could speak English.” Once they were in school, at École Ste. Anne and Bâtisseurs, Fanny turned to the task of building a career completely from scratch.

Finding a job in Canada is a challenge for all newcomers. “I ran into ‘it’s not Canadian experience’ a lot, but hey they’re not going to play the fanfare at the airport when you come. You’re basically on your own. I started knocking on doors and getting to know people, I started helping other newcomers.” In fact, from that moment forward, Fanny became an advocate and an unofficial consultant for other newcomers like herself. Unfortunately, this was not a paid position. “At some point I realized everybody was making money while I was doing a lot of the legwork, while I also understood more and more that newcomers have specific knowledge gaps and need a lot of extra support and information… that’s what motivated me to get my real estate license, was to help represent those newcomers, which I still do...” With her real-estate license Fanny was able to carry out what had become a personal mission, helping other newcomers during exploratory visits and arrivals, while providing for her family.

Becoming a real-estate agent is not as easy as some of the recruitment materials might have you believe, and for once in her life, Fanny had to settle for a slow start. “At first I kept it low-profile because I had all these kids.” Preferring the lessinvolved buyer transactions to the more lucrative seller transactions, and finding that business went in waves and seasons, she budgeted wisely. Times of abundance provided for times of scarcity. Initially, she struggled to find a support network to get her business growing, but by 2016, she was ready for a new challenge. And that’s when she started The Property Ladies and hired Melissa Murray, also a mother of four, also driven and ambitious.

“I always say, if you want something done, ask a busy woman because it will get checked off her to do list…

Melissa is like that. Melissa is my perfect counterpart.”

Fanny met Melissa when she first hired her as a housekeeper. It wasn’t long before she discovered that Melissa was an organizational genius. “She built a system to make sure my house was always clean… light fixtures, baseboards… even the beds were on rotation. She had it all written down, and the next person just took it from there.”

Melissa is now the second Property Lady.

While she worked as Fanny’s housekeeper, she got her real-estate license, and although being a mother of four children is keeping her from becoming a fullfledged agent (as it did for Fanny in the beginning), she supports The Property Ladies behind the scenes, managing operations and leveraging social media to tremendous effect. Together with Paul, Fanny’s partner (who is her ‘fixer of everything’ including repairs at properties that might otherwise have not been ready for listing), Melissa and Fanny have built a real-estate business model that succeeds in moving property quickly, focusing on building long-term client relationships

rather than simply on transactions, and that serves newcomers from all over the world. While Fanny deals mainly with newcomers from Europe, at the time of writing, she is hiring agents who can serve Chinese and Middle-Eastern newcomers and wants to expand her buyer agent network to other countries and languages.

Like some other more involved real-estate agents, Fanny often plays the role of counsellor, therapist, advisor and becomes a friend for life with many of her clients.

She continues to offer her passionate support to other newcomers on exploratory visits and shares her network and contacts with them to make sure they get the best start possible.

As our conversation draws to a close, I ask about her children: “Charlotte is at UNB finishing up a BA degree and working at Teed Saunders Doyle…, Max is working for a plowing/landscaping business and contemplating college in the fall... Victoria is at SMU in Halifax finishing up her first year in criminology. Tina is in Grade 7 at Nashwaaksis Middle School and enjoying being a teenager. I am extremely proud of all 4 of them.”

I think to ask if she’s relaxing at all now that she has only one child at home, but this is answered for me when she explains that her home is still bustling, and that she’s been hosting exchange students from places like China and Turkey through a program called Canada Homestay International, which places international students in the Canadian public school system. She talks about these children as though they were her own: “I have student children everywhere now; I’ve been doing this for 6 or 7 years. I have one in Montreal, and one in Toronto; I have one boy who’s at UNB, and the others stay in touch after they return to their country.” I decided to leave my question about relaxing unasked. For busy women like Fanny Bodart and Melissa Murray, there is no taking it easy, except maybe after everything is done. Whenever that is.

Advocacy Update

by Morgan Peters Bill 9 - Taxing Machinery and Equipment Bill 9, which sought to include the value of machinery and equipment in property tax calculations has been withdrawn by MLA Gerry Lowe – stating that he didn’t know he wasn’t allowed to submit bills that increased taxes as opposition and that it was never intended to affect SMEs. In withdrawing the bill, Mr Lowe also moved to send the issue to the legislature’s law amendments committee for study and hearings. Previously, we sent letters to each provincial party leader (with seats in the legislature), asking them to vote against Bill 9.

Bill C-69 – Federal Pipeline Bill On 20 February 2019, we participated in the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Day of Action regarding Bill C-69. This involved a social media campaign, a letter to MP Matt DeCourcey and a letter to the Senate of Canada committee currently studying the bill.

NBSA MOU We met with the NB Student Alliance during their advocacy week earlier this month. They presented their annual advocacy and outlined their policy priorities. We also renewed our

MOU with the NBSA which gives their members (students) access to our free events and member prices to our paid events. The organization’s Executive Director also agrees to sit on the chamber’s Government Affairs and Policy committees.

Carbon Tax The federal backstop carbon tax came into effect in New Brunswick and elsewhere on 1 April 2019 – adding 4.4 cents to a litre of gasoline in NB. With the UCP’s election victory in Alberta, half of the provincial governments (representing 60% of the pop.) are opposed to carbon tax and a federal election this fall, we are sure to hear much more about it throughout 2019. CEO Krista Ross’ April commentary was on a “Made in NB Carbon Solution” which can be found on our website.

Workplace Violence Policies On 1 April 2019 the province’s new workplace violence policy requirements came into effect. At a minimum, all NB workplaces must do an assessment of the likelihood of workplace violence. If there is any likelihood, a policy is required for your workplace (many others automatically need a policy – over 20 employers or sector dependent).

n our 2019-2020 pre-budget brief to the provincial government (available on our website), we urged Finance Minister Steeves to focus on what is and what is not a core area of government as a way to make it more apparent what is a government ‘investment’ and what is a government ‘spend’. This focus will then allow the government to be leaner and more targeted and produce a cohesive tax-debt-economic development strategy.

We also encouraged government to make decisions with a business lens - allowing for and supporting economic growth.

This is the only way our province can prosper - if business can continue to grow - which creates employment, supports other businesses in the supply chain, and provides revenue to all levels of government. Ultimately - growth and economic prosperity in our communities

also makes New Brunswick a more attractive place to live and work.

New Brunswick’s provincial finances and economy are in a precarious position and their symbiotic relationship means that government decision-makers will have to make thoughtful, deliberate and frequently difficult decisions in the coming years. This kind of restraint is required not only to provide the services that New Brunswickers need and deserve, but also to be able to create the competitive business environment that business needs to thrive. Without consistent and sustainable economic growth, any other positive decisions made by government will be for naught.

In other words, the relationship between the Province’s finances, its ability to deliver services and economic development are symbiotic and inextricably linked. It’s one of the reasons our organization’s vision is Stronger Community Through Business Prosperity - a concept that we believe is equally applicable provincially. The

Province must carefully balance its current short-term revenue needs with its longterm growth needs - viewing decisions (at least in part) through a business lens.

This relationship also means that tax policy is the best economic tool we have available. When viewed in this context, every dollar spent by your government is relevant to the business community. The less the Province can spend today, the more breathing room it has to improve business conditions both now and into the future (and to reduce debt and provide services).

New Brunswick not only needs to be open for business - it has to let the world know.

Between our high taxes, an unwillingness to develop natural resources and the lack of private sector capital investment is a signal from companies that there are better places to do business. This has to change. And change dramatically if New Brunswick ever hopes to be a “have” province. We are too far behind other jurisdictions economically to aim for

2019-2020 NB BUDGET average, we have to do much better than that in order to close the gap.

Some of the highlights for the business community include: • The province’s net debt currently sits at almost $14.1 billion for a population of 767,000 people. The net debt is projected to decrease by $49.2 million by 2020. This will mark the first time in thirteen years that the net debt will decrease.

• However, GDP growth expected to be 0.6% (worst in Canada); spending increasing by 1.3%; revenue increasing by 1.5% due to an equalization bump (~$200M) • No provincially-controlled tax/fee increases or decreases (carbon tax begins on 1 April 2019).

• Minimum wage increasing $0.25 to $11.50 (in line w/ CPI) – we made a submission in late 2018 reiterating our position that this was our preferred minimum wage mechanism.

• Nearly 50% cut to workforce development • Cut in funding to ONB (~$5M) and Cyber NB (from $1.8M to $400K) – details at committee • Comprehensive tax review (budget speech stated rather than piecemeal approach, gov’t will take broader look at tax system w/ view towards improving conditions through lower taxes) • Gov’t intends to seek ‘one-time demographic weighted health care agreement with feds We were encouraged that the 2019-2020 provincial budget recognizes the urgency with which New Brunswick must act to get its fiscal house in order. Sustained restraint is required not only to provide the services that New Brunswickers need and deserve, but also to be able to create the competitive business environment that business needs to thrive. As with any budgeting process, the details – as they become known over the next year – will tell the whole story.

It has the potential to be a foundational budget that stabilizes the provinces finances and gives NB a starting point to make real progress on debt reduction, which is needed to lower taxes, grow the

NEW MEMBERS economy and provide the services that New Brunswickers need in the future. Our chamber and the business community at large have identified debt reduction as a top priority for the province – making real progress with a projected $49 million payment on our $14 billion debt is a precursor to being a sustainable province.

Particularly encouraging is the recognition in Minister Steeves’ budget speech that the province must have a strong private sector, it must be an attractive location for investment dollars, and it must be fiscally responsible to make it happen.

The transparency measures promised in this budget are also part of the fiscal responsibility needed – that includes more detailed quarterly reporting and an increase to the auditor general’s budget.

We are currently seeking more details in several areas, including budget reductions to Opportunities New Brunswick / Cyber NB. As the key economic development organization in the province and host of Cyber NB – ONB’s activities have a major impact on the business community.

Cybersecurity is an important economic opportunity for Fredericton and the province as a whole, and it is important that both the public and private sectors are behind its development as a key sector in New Brunswick. The significant decrease in these two budgets will need to be explained more fully to gauge the impact on economic activity and business growth and attraction.

We have written to the government on the following: • More information regarding reductions to NB’s Tourism budget • To further advocate for a comprehensive tax review and red tape reduction efforts • To advocate for a long and predictable notice period for minimum wage increases Overall, we’ve asked government to make fiscal responsibility a priority, and the 2019-20 budget is a start down that path. This is the only way our province can prosper - if business can continue to grow - this creates employment, supports other businesses in the supply chain, and provides revenue to all levels of government allowing them to provide needed services to our citizens.

Mentally Healthy Workplaces:

The Best Investment Your Business Can Make

E

very week, nearly 500,000 Canadians miss work due to mental health problems or illnesses, costing the economy in excess of $51 billion annually.

In order to remain competitive, businesses need to focus inwards and begin investing in and improving how they navigate mental health in their workplace.

With most adults spending more of their waking hours at work and with one in five Canadians experiencing a mental health problem or illness, addressing the issue of mental health at work is vitally important for all people in Canada— especially employers. Mentally healthy workforces perform better and create opportunities that allow for inclusive growth for all sections of society, which is why the Canadian Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Mental Health Commission of Canada to launch 338 Conversations in February.

338 Conversations is a call to action for all 338 members of parliament to join forces with local chambers of commerce to promote workplace mental health and encourage the business community to take the steps needed to ensure the mental well-being of their workers.

“Addressing the challenges around mental health in the workplace makes for more productive businesses, up to a 30% boost in productivity in some cases. All businesses can, and should, get behind this important initiative. That’s why the Canadian Chamber of Commerce will be implementing the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace,” said Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO, Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Businesses have the ability to help shape a healthier and more competitive Canada, but in order to move forward,

we must acknowledge that mental health plays an important role in our ability to achieve economic success. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce not only talks the talk, but walks the walk on mental health.

It has taken simple steps to building a more mentally healthy workplace by enrolling in an employee and family assistance program, developing a psychological health and safety policy, having all employees complete mental health training, providing staff with flexible hours and the ability to work remotely. All of the Canadian chamber’s locations are secured offices with natural lighting and quiet spaces. Its headquarters in Ottawa also features an employee wellness room.

It is not only socially responsible for businesses to prioritize a mentally healthy workplace, but also fiscally responsible, all while promoting employee retention. As the leading cause of short- and long-term disability in Canada, mental health takes a substantial toll on Canadian workplaces.

The longer an employee is absent from work, the higher chance there is for an unsuccessful integration back into the workplace. Businesses must prioritize adopting best practices for workplace mental health in order to mitigate the risk of losing their employees. A low employee turnover heightens a business’ financial performance over time.

Additionally, a workplace that champions good mental health makes employees more productive and assists in the recruitment of new workers.

Canadians deserve to feel happy, comfortable and understood in their place of employment. It is up the business community to take the important steps needed to help end the stigma around mental illness because when employees succeed, businesses succeed, and that is what makes a stronger Canada.

ith summer fast approaching, the City of Fredericton would like to advise residents, businesses, and transportation network users of upcoming work that may impact their day to day travel.

This summer’s projects include three major road improvements designed and scheduled in such a way as to minimize significant traffic impacts on city residents.

Further details on these major closures will be announced as contracts are tendered and weather permits. The complete list of construction projects can be found at www.fredericton.ca/construction.

The major construction improvement projects include: • Smythe Street – This project will involve a full closure of Smythe Street from Heather Terrace to Parkside Drive.

The work, which will get underway at the end of May and last until midOctober, will allow for the replacement of water and sewer pipes. Nearby businesses will remain open.

• Wilsey Road – This project requires a full closure of Wilsey Road from Kimble Drive to Mcnair Street. The starting date for this 10-12 week project is still being determined, but it will be phased in two parts so that traffic can always access Innovation Road. The work will see a replacement of water and sewer pipes, as well as the paving of a new multi-use trail from Kimble Drive to McNair Street on the west side of Wilsey Road. Nearby businesses will remain open.

• Victoria Circle – This project will result in the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of King Street, Brunswick Street, Point Sainte Anne

Boulevard, and Smythe Street. The project, which will start at the end of June and last until mid-October, will allow for improved traffic flow, safer pedestrian crossings, improvements to the active transportation network, and the replacement of underground services. Nearby businesses will remain open.

Traffic restrictions will be in place for the duration of these projects and motorists should plan for delays. Detour maps for major projects, as well as changes to transit routes and schedules due to construction, can be found on the construction webpage.

Activities to reduce Detour maps are easily downloaded traffic during directly from the webpage and serve as a construction useful tool to direct customers and clients to and from businesses. Information meetings and direct communications will be provided to affected residents and businesses.

While businesses in construction areas remain open during construction projects, and city contractors work hard to maintain access to affected businesses, residents can help reduce traffic congestion by exploring flex time at work, taking vacation during busy construction periods, walking, biking, carpooling, using transit, allowing extra time to complete errands, and reducing or combining trips across the bridge, and around town.

Why Wind Energy Will Benefit New Brunswick

hy wind energy will benefit New Brunswick. Let’s break this statement into two parts. First off, why wind energy in general? And secondly, what are the specific impacts it will have on our province. So, sit back, we’ll breeze right to the point. Sorry, we know…wind puns blow.

Let’s get into the reasons why wind energy has been successful in many countries for several decades. In Canada alone, wind energy grew more between 2008 and 2018 than any other form of electricity generation! The total installed capacity of wind generation in 2018 reached 12,816 MW, and for those of you who have no idea what that number means, let us break that down for you. 12,816 MW is equivalent to over 674 million cars driven for one year. That’s a lot of cars!

Question for you: when you walk into a store, whether it be clothing, groceries, etc., what do you look for the most?

Products on sale! It just so happens that wind energy is one of the lowest-priced energy sources available today. Who doesn’t love a good deal? Not only is it cost-effective, wind is an inexhaustible source of renewable energy.

Wind is clean. It doesn’t add pollution into our air like burning coal.

By reducing the use of fossil fuels, it will lower the amount of bad stuff in our atmosphere that causes health problems and economic damages (and no, President Trump, wind turbines don’t cause cancer.)

Now that we’ve heard why wind works let’s see why it works in New Brunswick!

We’ve heard that a new 20 MW wind farm

is being developed in the northern part of our province… I wonder by who ;) If this is the case, let’s focus specifically why wind will help that area of New Brunswick thrive.

First of all, 20 MW is enough energy to power almost 9,000 homes. That’s equivalent to all the residential homes in Bathurst! The annual energy production of a 20 MW wind farm is equal to over 6 billion smartphones charged. The creation of the wind farm can create 100 jobs during just the construction phase alone. Along with that, ten direct and indirect jobs are created to maintain the turbines over the rest of their lifetime.

These jobs provide employment for the local residents, which will overall increase the economic opportunities for the community.

There’s a significant community benefit as well. During the different phases of creating the wind farm, workers from outside the area will increase revenue for service businesses. This can include bed and breakfasts, restaurants, etc. Wind farms can also enhance tourism and strengthen the local tax base!

So, there’s the gist of it. Congrats, you actually read until the end! We’re curious, if you have given this a read between now and the end of 2019, let us know what our next wind or solar farm should be named and receive a free hat or toque (send us an email to iactuallyreadthis@ naveco.ca.... And yes, we swear that’s a real email address!) Because let’s be honest, New Brunswick has lots of wind!

The New Face of Women in Business New Brunswick

omen in Business New Brunswick (WBNB) has been in existence for more than a decade. It is an organisation that provides services to women in business and women entrepreneurs thanks to the financial support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). Under the auspices of the New Brunswick Association of Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs), the WBNB can rely on a strong and wellestablished network of economic leaders dedicated to small and medium-sized enterprises across New Brunswick.

WBNB underwent a restructuring of its organisation in fall 2018 and is currently going through a strategic planning and a work plan exercise. “We are looking forward to having new activities and a schedule to propose to female entrepreneurs, we are planning to launch the organisation and all of its new components in a near future. We are currently developing a new website, new promotional items with a completely new branding. Stay tuned as WBNB will also reveal the members of its Advisory Committee,� said Katherine Lanteigne, Director of WBNB.

WBNB added value lies on an experienced team of development officers who provide bilingual support to all female entrepreneurs in both rural and urban areas. Keep workers at work – especially after an injury

afe and fulfilling work is good for us.

It helps form our confidence, leads to lasting friendships and helps us feel valued. Work also builds our economy – fostering growth, innovation and prosperity.

To have a strong workforce, we need a strong return-to-work (RTW) culture.

When a worker incurs an injury or illness of a personal nature, such as non-workrelated cancer, supervisors and managers rally behind them. They contact them by phone or in person to express empathy and offer support.

Co-workers, too, reach out to the worker – they help keep them connected, inviting

them to workplace functions, such as social get-togethers. They may offer to make meals or visit them at home.

Any significant injury or illness turns a worker’s world upside-down – and a workplace injury or illness is no different.

This is a time when workers need their workplace the most.

Last fall, about 70 New Brunswick employers – many CEOs – met at our Health and Safety Leadership Forum in Fredericton to discuss how they can support one another in both prevention and worker recovery efforts following a workplace injury. The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce was on the

employer advisory committee for the event.

Employers play a critical role in worker recovery. They get the wheels in motion.

And the one, most important thing employers can do for injured workers is to keep them at work.

This starts with an effective RTW program – one that’s clearly communicated to staff. Everyone knows what to do when a workplace injury or illness happens.

There’s no delay in accommodation.

The health benefits of ongoing workplace connection and early and safe RTW are overwhelming.

WorkSafeNB Choosing Wisely, a program developed by Canadian medical organizations, sums up the benefits for workers:

helping patients ill or injured from work.

The New Brunswick Medical Society has been integral, helping us develop tools.

“There is substantial evidence to support the positive link between work and health (physical, mental and social health). … Absence from work contributes to declining health, slower recovery times, and longer duration of disability.

Maintaining and restoring working capacity is an important function of health services which improves function and can also impact upon recovery and prognosis. Supporting unnecessary restrictions or total disability (absence from work) creates disability, which, in turn, negatively impacts upon health.”

Early and safe RTW means improved health outcomes, which leads to reduced demand and costs in the health care system.

Employers also benefit from a more engaged workforce and savings in replacement and training costs.

But it’s not just workers and employers who benefit and have a role. WorkSafeNB is working with the medical community to help raise awareness and encourage a focus on abilities – not restrictions – when

This summer, we’ll also publish an interactive guide with sample templates to help businesses – small and large – in the RTW process.

Workplace accommodation is part of treatment. We need everyone to ask: How can we keep employees working safely in the workplace?

Modifying duties can be as simple as removing certain tasks, allowing more time for other tasks, using technology or tools to help the worker stay safe and

comfortable, or reducing hours. Even one hour a day keeps a worker connected to the workplace, in familiar surroundings near colleagues.

Laurie Hutchings was a cook at the Kingsway Care Centre in Quispamsis when she experienced a repetitive injury on her wrist and needed surgery.

With support from her employer and health-care providers, Laurie did a gradual return to work.

Kingsway helped her throughout the process with flexibility and caring support.

“Someone was there to support me, and I was able to get back into the swing of things right away,” she said. “I’m very grateful to be able to be productive at work again.”

This is what early and safe RTW is all about – a team of people gathering around the worker when they most need it.

Chamber begins federal pre-election activities

Earlier this month, members of the chamber met with CPC Deputy Leader Lisa Raitt as the unofficial launch of our 2019 pre-election activities. Watch our communication channels throughout the summer and fall for more activities and information aimed at informing our members about businessrelevant positions as we approach the election on 21 October 2019.

2019 City of Fredericton’s Unsung Hero Award Recipient

On 17 May 2019, the chamber’s very own Membership Development and Marketing Manager Christine Little was presented with the City of Fredericton’s Unsung Hero Award.

Christine was recognized for her tireless volunteer work, including for leadership positions at two of Fredericton’s best know events – the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival and the Fredericton Marathon.

Thank you Christine for all that you do for our members and the community!
