Editor’s Letter

This first OCAD MAGAZINE of the Academic Year 2023-24 is one of celebration This issue includes a number of stories that focus, in one way or another, on the topic of success. This is not about grades but is more about a personal journey of discovery and progression. We saw a fantastic number of students graduate this Summer 2023, and this is a great time for reflection and jubilation!

We invited alumni, as well as graduates, to come and reflect on their experience with OCAD and to share their excitement for the future. So these span several generations of students and who all have spent a great deal of their time working on their fields and refining their skills and passions - we are so proud and honoured to have supported so many students who are now able to share their voices with you As you will read, it’s not all plain sailing, but oh how it is worth it in the end!

As many of our graduates from the Level 3 courses go onto University, we do reflect as a centre on the many genres of art we support and how to continue that progression for the next group of students joining us With new tutors, resources and visitors planned for 2023-24, we continue the excitment that our Online centre provides across all the levels and courses in Art, as well as Music We look forward to you reading about them all.

Many of the images in this issue showcase the diveristy and talent of OCAD students, but also we must not forgot that these final outcomes are the end of months, sometimes years, worth of research, planning, practice and development The opportunities and collaborations are there, and so many of our students get the full emersive experience on offer, and their portfolios reflect that. The arts can only benefit from a rich mix that different nationalities bring to the table, and as I sent certificates off across the UK, as well as to Saudi Arabia, Namibia, Spain, Portugal, Germany, UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore, to name a few, I remind myself every year of how lucky we all are to work in such a wonderful envrionment of people, time zones and cultures.

A special thank you to our guest artist, Simon Frend, who shares his work on art, craft and design - but who also reminds us that learning is a life-long endevour and with self-belief, you can do anything you could dream!

So do enjoy our Summer Issue 2023, and keep an eye out for all the celebrations that will continue as our students receive their certificates this month. Congratulations to each and every one of you. It has been a pleasure as always

Specialthanksto:

Rachel Howe

Rachel has been studying Level 2 Certificate in Art and Design (GCSE EQV) with OCAD. She graduated Summer 2023 and this artwork was from her final project on the course.

This artwork is about the strong connection between identical twins. I used a range of media including gouache paint, acrylic paint, gold ink, clear gem drops, pearl gem drops, paper/card dollies, floral elements, butterflies and I used A3 mixed media paper.

The theme of a powerful bond between twins is very close and personal to me as I am an identical twin and I wanted to express our love and connection in my art.

The art skills I used in this piece, like portraiture drawing, were developed throughout the level 2 course. These skills were introduced in the Skill Builder Tasks and then refined while planning and practicing my final piece. I appreciated all the resources the course provided particularly the recordings of the live lessons, which were very useful, and the tutors were helpful and encouraging.

I will now be going on to do a BTEC level three Art and Design course at College.

Learning about Pop Art

POP ART started when a group of artists felt that the other styles did not represent the improvement of the world and the new inventions being invented Together, they created Pop Art Richard Hamilton described it as: “Popular, transient, low cost, mass produced, young, witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous, big business.”

The name Pop Art actually comes from the subjects that created it The movement used popular, consumer items objects like Campbell's Soup Cans, celebrities like Marilyn Munroe, cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse, science fiction or other forms of popular culture such as newspapers, roads signs and commercials.

Lower School is the equivalent to Key Stage 3 Students are taught in a vertical system whereby age is not defining ability and progression It brings a sense of inspiration and motivation within the friendly atmosphere for the students, where ideas are shared in live lessons and student groups Many of our lower school students will progress into level 2 art and design

Thank you so much for this year - I have learnt so much but it has been really hard. The pop art work has been brilliant and I have really enjoyed it! Tobias John - Lower School Art 2023

Why I came to OCAD - I have been home educated since I was 9 years old because I was bullied in school and this really knocked my confidence and I was so worried about going to school I had always loved drawing and during this time it became a big part of my life as I felt so relaxed and calm when I sat down to draw In 2021, I decided I was ready to start an online course in art and I began the Lower School Art course after researching various potential online courses It was this course that appealed to me because because it offered such a variety of interesting studies At this time, I also had a lot of other extra curricular activities and as this course offered both live lessons and the opportunity to watch the lessons afterwards if I was unable to attend, it was ideal

When I plan to finish - After finishing one year of the KS3 course, in 2022 my teacher, Mrs Rees asked if I would like to start the Level 2 course At first I was hesitant about joining as I was taking several self-taught IGCSE courses and had a wide range of curricular activities However she was so encouraging and supportive as well as Miss Graham, I decided to have a go at the trial period to see if I would like it It was this support and encouragement as well as seeing first hand what the course offered that made me decide to start the course and I am so glad I did I intend to finish the first part of the course - The Skill Builder - by October 2023 and the second part of the course - Final Themed Project by May/June 2024

What I enjoy about the course - The first thing I love about the course is the variety of tasks there is which offers me the chance to learn about different media and how it is applied. I have learnt about many artists, their techniques, what and who influenced their work, and about different art movements. I have really enjoyed the photography part of this course The course has taught me not only the elements I need to consider when taking a photo, but also the visual language found in photographs and I have found this part so interesting as well as how to apply photo manipulation I love the online lessons and hate missing the occasional one because this is where I get to interact with Mrs Rees and others to explore ideas and information, as well as ask questions if I don’t understand something Each lesson goes so quickly and I will miss this part of the course one I have completed the first part of the course

Challenges - as this was the first course I had done online I felt very nervous about this new way of learning but I soon settled in and quickly learnt how to use Team’s For me, my own confidence was a challenge for me - I felt that my work would not be good enough and after past experiences I was worried about this But this has changed so much - I feel so much more confident about my work because of all the support and encouragement from Mrs Rees I don’t worry about feedback anymore as its always done in a constructive way A challenge for me is that I always want to include a lot of information in the research part of each task and the slide limit of 120 for the 17 Skill Builder Tasks and this does not feel enough

How I feel about the course - I have found this course amazing and I have enjoyed every moment of it so far. The course is well structured and this suits my personality. I really like how Mrs Rees and Miss Graham reply so quickly to any questions I have even on the weekends so this means I can carry on with the work. The live lessons as so interesting and seeing how to actually use different media is so helpful.

Being able to rewatch the videos really helps to make sure I haven’t missed something

What brought you to OCAD?

What you have enjoyed?

I am not sure what to single out, as every part of this course brought its own combinationofhardbitsandenjoyablebits

I enjoyed learning about colour theory and practising colour scales - I particularlyenjoyedthetasksthatinvolveddigitallycombiningphotostocreate new art pieces. I have enjoyed the opportunity to experiment with a range of media and getting to find out that I like working with oil pastels and acrylic paint Sculpting the horse out of cardboard was very enjoyable to me The highlight was using all of these skills combined to create my final piece about Acceptanceanditmademefeelproud

What

I am looking forward to go to college to study Graphics, as I would love to do something in the direction of digital art, and I think this would be a good starting point. OCAD has helped me to make this decision and gave me the confidence to actuallywanttotrythis.

I tried to make use of different size hearts and frames to carry a message through The biggest heart is the most colourful and being on the other side of aninvitingwindow, allowingapersontoleavethesadnessandrejectionbehind butlookingforwardtoaplaceoffreedomandwholeness.

Acceptance to me carries the key to every person’s heart as it values the person for who they are and can transform a dark, sad, abandoned or broken heart, intoahealed, whole, completeheart, colourfulandoverflowingwithjoy. Kaira

WHAT HAVE YOU ENJOYED ABOUT THE COURSE?

I would have to say that one of the best aspects of OCAD is the range of media and styles that I was encouraged to try – from college to pop art to still life toCézanne IthinkthatI’mabitofaperfectionistandin art would often write off a media if I wasn’t so sure about it but, in this course, I was forced to go outside my comfort zone (in a good way). It didn’t always go quitetoplan, butusuallyIwasverypleasantlysurprised by the different types of media and styles I tried (such asthesecharcoalandchalkfacialfeaturesIdidinTask 7 Charcoal Portraiture and the digital manipulation of aviewfromTask14LandscapePhotography).The thing that I have found really good with this e are the teachers - they are so supportive and ways there to hear your ideas and play around ewones.

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVOURITE PIECES THAT YOU DID AS PART OF THE COURSE?

I would say that three of my favourite pieces are: the greyscale still life of formal elements which I did quite early on in my course (for Task 2 Universal Forms) and allowed me to go right back to the basics of different shapes and the shadows that they create; a fun and colourful afternoon tea watercolour still life which really helped me develop my colour theory (for Task 9 Colour Scales and StillLife);

and a mixed media piece with collage, embroidery, and pressed flowers (for Task 16 Mixed Media). This last one wasn’t my best piece of art, but I like it because this was one of the first tasks where I relaxed into the process OCAD leads you through of testing lotsofdifferentideasandelementsagainand again before bringing them altogether for a finalpiece

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU HAVE STRUGGLED WITH WHILE BEING AT OCAD?

WhilethisartcoursehasbeengreatandI’velearntlots ofnewthingsaswellashavingareallyfuntime,it’snot all been plain sailing. Personally, I take a long time on one piece of art (even if it’s just meant to be a sketch sometimes!) and, as there is quite a large range of topics to cover in the time frame (which is good in manyways),formeitalsomeantthatsometimesIjust wasn’tashappywithmyfinalartworkswhichcouldbe frustrating. I think a lot of artists go through this, but what I kept reminding myself was that I was still learning and, even if I got annoyed or it wasn’t quite perfect, I would have never dreamt of doing all these pieces (good and bad) and expanding my art knowledge if I hadn’t started the course in the first e So, I did struggle at times, but I think, even gh I was unaware of it, the perseverance to nuewasallpartofthelearningtoo.

The Final Major Project covers the final unit of the Online Foundation Diploma and is titled the Confirmatory stage It is initiated by the writing of the students own self-directed project brief. It is also the point of the course where students gain their final grade and UCAS points.

Devising their own project brief, students build on their experiences of the previous 7 units and reflect on their personal interests and chosen specialism.

The Final Major Project is a fulfilling and extremely enjoyable experience for all. It is the time to be bold, take risks and break rules Students are very proud of what they produce, as are their tutors, as it is about how far they can progress their learning and push their creative ideas to their limits. The breadth of variety and skill always amazes us!

Can Fashion be Salvaged?

I wanted to pursue a career in design and creation of fashion before starting this foundation, integrating my environmental science A level, I want to be part of the zero-waste fashion industry and recycling of materials

The project covers two main points: reuse within fashion, and, the cycle of trends where parts of history have been melded into current and future designs I intended to push myself into creating textiles from other textiles to make them unique and more interesting, and I wanted to incorporate patchwork and statement elements

I really enjoyed looking at history and researching the garments that were made so delicately and how they could survive and be reused for decades after being made I found current garment creation falls short in quality and causes immense environmental impact I asked myself the question, how has our society shifted from quality construction to over consumerism of low-quality things?

The most challenging part of this particular outfit was creating the patchwork on the top; what I learnt from my research into compositions I managed to work out how different shapes compliment others and balance each other out

We are thrilled to announce the commencement of our exciting contextual lecture series led by the Artist, Academic and Theorist Tim Edgar

These lectures are a valuable addition to our student journey in creative expression, as they offer a unique perspective on theoretical issues that underpin their projects.

These lectures will not only enhance student understanding of the world of creative expression but also empower them to make more informed, socially conscious, and impactful choices.

We can’t wait to get these started - we’re so lucky to have this addition to our fantastic Diploma programme! Welcome to the team Tim!

BILLY MAY

When beginning my Confirmatory Stage project

‘Pearls’ my focus was on cultural impacts and influences of pearls within Greek and Chinese mythology, Tudor court dress and classic portraiture I mostly explored Tudor and Elizabethan aristocratic clothing as my historical influence as I found it visually rich and exciting, and returned to the Greek mythological influences of Aphrodite for my photoshoot at the end

While exploring the possible effects and silhouettes I could create with pearls, one of the designers I looked at was Rei Kawakubo; her intense often bulbous shaped pieces made me think of how to explore the shape of pearls under fabric I merged this theme with the Tudor inspired texture and colour pallets

I love the idea of combining old and new, taking historical elements of clothing and techniques, and merging them t t ti l

Though by no means perfect, clothing pre-industrial revolution was being made far more sustainably because only natural materials and fibres were available as well as the time-consuming process of making clothes - reducing the amount people had, and prolonging the wear of garments My intention with my final designs was to create signature pieces that were versatile in their wear and unique enough to be be cherished in someones wardrobe rather than discarded swiftly.

While working on this project I realised I wanted to create for younger queer, gender nonconforming and alternative people, like myself, who want to t i ti d l

Beginning this course i had no expectation of doing fashion design, it didn’t feel like an option. During the first 4 projects I did two on fashion and they were the most enjoyable for me; so I continued with it.

As a student with austim and ADHD I have always found the eduction system to be an incredibly stressful place that has not suited me As I

progressed through the course I realised how I needed to be communicated with and how to ask for help - to seek clarification and for constructive criticism in ways that work for my brain, rather than trying to conform to how things are structured for neurotypical students The tutors were so supportive and open to working with me to work out how to aid me the most effectively

AUTUMN TERM WITH FADM

Set Your Pace

Students are busy with preparing and mapping out their course goals this term. Those who are applying to University to start in 2024 have some tigher deadlines to ensure they meet moderation. So this is the time to talk with tutors, get a plan and then we can track and support you every step of the way :)

Best thing about online is the flexibility of it and that you can work from anywhere at anytime! We look forward to supporting our students on their journey.

Tutors start their live sessions

We’ve kickstarted this term with live tutorials on topics such as Making a digital sketchbook, The Creative Processes, and Life Drawing

Such a great response with many of students joining the live Q&As to enhance their online experience. Work is going to be outstanding with all the extra resources going live this term - what a great time to be a FADM student at OCAD!

StudioRoost is a photographic business available for portrait, product, architectural, fashion and lifestyle commissions in the Dorset area. As well as providing space for in-house production the studio also provides local photographers, filmmakers, visual artists and small businesses access to a studio without the expense of owning one

EXPLORATORY STAGE

Beautiful photography coming in from students learning from our specialist photographer Alberto Gonzalez. Photography is the first project for our students and this term has started with some amazing shots!

“I think for me the main difference between shooting this project and my normal photography is that I usually only focus on what looks good, whereas in this project I think more about the relationship between the people and the composition or the lighting, like in this photo. I realised that I need to have my own emotions when taking photographs. For example, when I took this picture, I put a very strong personal touch on it, and it shows how much I miss my brother” YuHao Xia

PATHWAY STAGE

More development has taken shape within our pathway stage. Our wonderful tutor Syliva leads a new start to the pathway stage by encouraging students to explore research, both visual and written to better define a contextual area This exploring playfully models practice and communication, supporting a range of fields and outcomes for all our students

CONFIRMATORY STAGE

As a record number of students celebrate achieveing a distinction grade this year, we are looking forward to celebrating their final project success in the first FADM final year exhibition later this month The diveristy of outcomes and creative projects that our students took on this year was astounding; we look forward to celebrating all of their success and sharing the incredible skills we have seen in this year ’ s confirmatory stages very soon!

Each urn evokes the essence ofitsorigin, reflectingtheseasonandsense ofplaceinitsmateriality.Thesesite-specific vessels are intended to dissolve in the sea, in the time between tides, returning the materialsandtheirpreciouscontentstothe environment with zero impact, exactly wheretheywerecollected.

The origin of this work can be traced back nearly30yearstoaseriesofsculpturallead ‘canopic’ vessels which I produced when studyingforaFoundationDiplomainArtand Design The explosive ‘failure’ of these vessels created a fascinating form and ideaswhichareechoedinlaterwork.

I am a OCAD student in photography, I had passed level 2 photography two years ago and wanted to get the level above where I have just passed level 3 This course is a great way to obtain a diploma if you live far away or if you are looking to have a new diploma

All the lessons are recorded so if you miss one you can still follow the lessons, and Mr Gonzalez explains very well in his lessons and takes time if you need help and always answers the questions. Throughout the year you can see all the investment Mr Gonzalez and Miss Graham have put into the project for us students to get to the diploma The school also organises different competitions throughout the year which is great fun I find.

This year I have participated in the Halloween contest where I won 1st prize! All these little competitions help you improve your creativity and to apply the techniques you want

I have followed the OCAD school so that after my skiing career I will be able to go on and be a photographer based more around sports as this is my life! Also, with this diploma I will be able to get a job as a photographer much sooner and more easily!

“I live in France and I am an elite skier, so for me it was a great way to continue my studies as well as my skiing career”
These two years I spent with OCAD have been great and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about doing photography!

FUTURE PHOTOGRAPHER TALHAH SYED

One of units which helped me develop my photography skills was ‘Develop and adapt photographic ideas’ (Unit 2). These images are my favourite as it conveys the concept of showing contrast

between flowers growing from the ground and flowers growing on trees. It gave me a chance to explore different perspectives of how photographs can be taken in outdoor environment.

I was able to improve the bokeh effect in both images to capture the detail of the intricate details of the flowers. The other unit that really stood out for me was the final project ‘Studio Photography’

Before I started this course, I wanted to better my understanding in this particular area of interest. This unit gave me a chance to improve my skills and learn how the positions of light and backgrounds can impact a portrait image.

To the right are a couple of images from my final project which show the dark and light backgrounds giving a dramatic look. At first it was not easy, however, the tutor gave me great feedback which helped me get these results which I am very proud of.

This course has given me a chance to rethink of how I take images. It has given me a deep insight of what can be achieved with a lot of research and practice.

I am excited to announce that I have my own portrait photography business at the age of 14. Therefore, now that I have graduated with my certificate, I can show my clients that I am qualified to be an up and coming portrait photographer.

Thank you to the whole team as well as my tutor for all your unconditional support, helping me complete this course.

Level3 Photography

Congratulations to Afiqatul Izzah, Fatemeh Valizadeh, Annabel Jallat and Freya O’Regan who all graduated from Level 3 Photography this summer. We were all so impressed with your achievements and wish you all the best in the next part of your photography journey!

It’s still very early in the term, but already students have started to build on their knowledge by exploring their camera settings Work here by the wonderful Amber Harris who is working on effects created by the differing shutter speeds.

This is Maisie Pocock exploring Unit 1 and doing a great job of her first ever light painting photography trials.

“I had a lot of issues with lighting, angles, distances, and size, however, after some practice I believe I got a really good photo for my first time”

Task booklets are part of each unit this year. This gives direction and links to the course overall structure and requirements. Many students are using these alongside live sessions to build evidence step by step throughout their course.

We know that when students can feel in control of their programme, can aim for the targets and criteria as outlined by the exam board, more purpose and focus becomes part of their work.

Resources are available at any time from a variety of ways so students can always be connected wherever they may be
