METAMORPHIC DRAWING

Demonstrations, critiques, and virtual gallery visits bring your work to a more intriguing level. This class is designed for students that want to continue to refine their skills in the medium and refresh their understanding of concepts. DRAWING WITH COLOR

We usually think of drawing with lines. In this class, we’ll focus on color shapes to help us understand and draw what we see. We will learn separating objects, and creating space by showing differences in value and issues of composition. We’ll concentrate on the strength that color gives to our drawing, using your choice of pastels, oil pastels, or colored pencils. Some drawing experience is useful but not necessary.

VIRTUAL OPEN STUDIO FOR LIFE DRAWING

The virtual open studio provides time for artists to draw from a live model over Zoom. Each week, the model will hold a series of short poses ranging from 1 to 15 minutes. This is a great opportunity to draw from live models in the medium of your choice and from the comfort of your home or private studio space. The model will be clothed during all open studios. There is no instructor present, but there will be a studio monitor. Students are not permitted to record or take photos or screenshots of the model or the class at any point. We ask that students keep their own video camera on during the class, but may turn their camera off during scheduled breaks.

BEGINNER OIL PAINTING

PROJECTS AT HOME

Jeremy Durling | Artist, jeremydurling.com You will be guided through a series of foundational color experiments involving personal still life setups. Learn the fundamentals of painting in this intensive, structured developmental painting program. We’ll stress visual language elements such as composition, observational measurement, values, space, and mark-making. In addition, we’ll utilize a series of limited palettes to build strength and understanding of color theory and color mixing. Oil paint is the preferred medium, but students who are comfortable using acrylic or gouache are welcome to do so.

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES FOR PAINTING:

WASHES, GLAZES, AND IMPASTO

Clare Asch | Artist, clareaschstudio.com In this online class, we will explore various painting methods, from thin washes and glazes to thick impasto. Classes will include demonstrations with step-by-step instructions in the use of the various techniques, examples of artists who use these techniques, a lot of hands-on practice, and feedback from the instructor. We will also focus on color, line, shading, and composition while working from still life setups, landscapes, and abstractions. Participants can choose to use either oil paint or acrylic paint, and the supply lists will specify the materials needed for both.

PAINTING THE INTERIOR

Jeremy Durling | Artist, jeremydurling.com This class will explore the complex subject of painting an interior space. We will work one step at a time from direct observation, beginning with drawing and color studies and using these to inform a larger final painting. Our goal is to better understand how to capture light and perspective in this complicated environment. Can be paired with Painting Out the Window for a 2-part course. Experience in drawing and painting in oil or acrylic is required.

PAINTING OUT THE WINDOW

Jeremy Durling | Artist, jeremydurling.com This class will study the beautiful and complex space we see while gazing through a window. This might be a landscape featuring a windowsill, or the light streaming into a beloved room. We will use drawing and color studies to experiment with ways of seeing this space, and these studies will inform a larger final painting. Can be taken independently or as a second part to Painting the Interior. Experience with drawing and painting in oil or acrylic is required.
