PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE I

Melanie Huguet | Native Speaker This class will improve the students’ pronunciation and help to facilitate the comprehension of spoken language. It will cover the vowels and letters that are mispronounced by English speakers such as “R” and “U,” as well the nasal vowels and sounds that are combinations of letters and vowels. Then, it is time to dig deeper. Berlin is a fantastically diverse, creative and colorful city full of unique people and chock-full of history. The city breaks down into a number of very distinct neighborhoods called Kieze. In this class, we will explore 4 Kieze: their history, culture, people and Lebensgefühl. Petra Bittner | Native Speaker Dieser Roman des Schriftstellers Thomas Mann erschien 1901 und ist der erste Gesellschaftsroman in deutscher Sprache von Weltrang. Er erzählt vom Niedergang einer reichen und einflussreichen Kaufmannsfamilie des norddeutschen Großbürgertums zwischen 1835 und 1877. In diesem Kurs lesen und diskutieren wir gemeinsam 4 zentrale Szenen des Romans in deutscher Sprache. Diese skizzieren exemplarisch den Handlungsverlauf. Ausschnitte aus der Verfilmung des Romans von 2008 komplettieren den Ausflug in die Welt der Buddenbrooks. We suggest reading the novel in English before class. BEGINNER CONVERSATION

This class is for students that have completed our four beginner levels or the equivalent of it and are comfortable with using the present tense and have some knowledge of preterite and future. Reinforce your basic knowledge of the structure of Spanish, develop fluency with the past tenses, acquire new vocabulary, learn about culture, and practice with lively activities and conversations.

THE THREE GROUPS OF VERBS

CONVERSATION: REFLECTIONS ON SOCIETY IN SHORT STORIES AND POEMS

Luis Carlos Lopez | Native Speaker This class introduces students to short stories and poems that reflect the flaws and values of societies in their contexts. We will discuss the authors’ cultural and historical contexts to understand the representation of society within their texts. Authors will include Julio Cortazar, Cristina Peri Rossi, Juan Gelman, Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Wiener, and many more. Students are encouraged to practice their fluency by connecting the reading selections to the leading themes of gender, madness, ethnicity, and existential identity. This class is recommended for advanced students (CEFR B2 and above).

SPANISH ENCOUNTERS THROUGH MUSIC AND SONGS

Martha de la Vega | Native Speaker Songs are a great medium to express a wide variety of universal emotions and a great window to other cultures. They are also very helpful and fun when learning Spanish. In every session, we will listen and process a couple of songs from different countries and genres. Improve your listening skills and review some grammar, learn new vocabulary and idioms, and enjoy the immersion in the language and the culture. Haremos ejercicios de conversacion antes de mirar el filme, y despues de mirar el filme. Por consiguiente, si te gustan los cortometrajes (de 5 minutos a 15 minutos) esta es la clase para ti!
