EXPLORING ART MOVEMENTS THROUGH PLATED DESSERTS: POP ART & THE RISE OF ARTISTS AS ACTIVISTS
Linda Khachadurian | Edible Artist, LKSweetArt.com
During this part lecture, part hands-on confectionary art class, we’ll learn about the artists of the pop art movement that burst onto the scene in the UK and US during the 1950s, marking the beginning of the trend of artists as activists. We’ll craft an original recipe representing the artists’ works in aesthetics and flavors, incorporating the saturated hues and commercialized renderings of Andy Warhol’s screenprints with the graffiti style cartoonish silhouettes of Keith Haring’s paintings: a mini ruby chocolate cheesecake abloom with a banana taffy rose enshrined in a sugar dome punctuated with chocolate bourbon bites and white chocolate popping candy pearls. Whether one has synesthesia, possesses only a somewhat heightened sensory awareness, or is merely curious to explore how flavors correspond to shapes and colors, this class will inspire art history and confectionary enthusiasts to explore beyond the common sensory constraints.

TERPENES, HONEY, AND CHEESE PAIRING
Hannah Morrow | Cheesemonger, MA Gastronomy
In this class we’ll experience strain-specific terpenes safely extracted in a lab from plants grown and harvested in Maine, combined with complex and diverse domestic and international honeys. Additionally, we’ll pair the honey with cheese, layering flavors of terpenes and honey on top. Terpenes are flavor compounds predominantly found in plants. They’re often structurally recreated in labs and re-introduced to products such as perfume and food to help create scents or flavors as desired. Strain-specific terpenes can be directly isolated from plants in a natural CO2 extraction, in this case utilizing the cannabis plant, without the inclusion of cannabinoids such as THC or CBD so you’re left with the pure essence of the plant flavor-wise without any of the psychoactive effects or plant matter. If you’re into extreme flavors and experimental pairings, this is an introduction into an untapped market, combining natural dairy and plant products.
This historical tour is as much about history as it is about pizza. We’ll learn about the history of the north End and wind up sampling pizza from three of the best pizza restaurants. We will also stop by bakeries, bubble tea shops, herbal medicine shops, live poultry markets, grocery stores, and a ginseng coop, all while discussing the history and architecture of Boston’s Chinatown. This will not be a “tasting tour,” rather, during the last stop, we’ll enjoy a delicious meal together. Please see the section description for the meeting point. Tuition includes the cost of dinner, soft drinks, taxes, and tip. The instructor will send a welcome information package via email one day prior to the class.

LEVANTINE ARABIC
Richard Cozzens | Arabic Instructor
Alaa Aldeen Kayali | Native Speaker
Arabic today exists in multiple overlapping yet distinct varieties. In published writing and formal contexts (e.g., articles, novels, religious texts, presentations of news or information), people use Modern Standard Arabic. At the same time, there are several different regional varieties (also called dialects) that people use primarily in conversational and informal contexts (e.g., greetings, family and social life, daily communication, social media posts).
Levantine Arabic is the regional variety of Arabic used by speakers from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria and is the native language to more than 44 million people. Furthermore, it is considered one of the most widely understood varieties across the Arabic-speaking world because of the large amount of media (songs, TV series, etc.) produced in it. Levantine Arabic shares with other varieties of Arabic many fundamental grammar structures and a large amount of vocabulary.
In this refresher class, students will revisit what they learned in Beginner Level 3 & 4 and listen, interact, and create new stories together as a group. Through the context of discussing and acting out these stories, students will learn how to communicate with increasing complexity.

Through selected excerpts, we’ll read, discuss, and deepen our understanding of the language while uncovering the historical and personal contexts that shaped their writing. We’ll also explore the close friendship between these three literary figures. To enrich our experience, the course will incorporate short videos, podcast clips, and press excerpts, offering a broader perspective on their work and inspiring further reading. This class is designed for students with an intermediate to advanced level of Portuguese (CEFR B1 and above).

This 3-week course is designed for students to review and integrate the content of all the 10 lessons in this beginner’s textbook, to introduce themselves and their family, and to talk about shopping, dining and travel, all in Chinese. Students are encouraged to review all the vocabulary and sentence structures in the book and compose passages about themselves on these topics during the break before the course starts. It will assign students to read short stories from the Graded Chinese Reader 500 words: Selected Abridged Chinese Contemporary Mini-stories (ISBn 978-7-5138-0345-8). It will start with the 15th story on p. 163, then read the 11th story on p. 121 if time allows. The class time will be divided between reading some passages aloud and answering discussion questions in Chinese, as well as covering certain vocabulary usage and grammar points relevant to the stories.

WELCOME TO SATAN’S BALL: MIKHAIL BULGAKOV’S MASTER AND MARGARITA
Anna Summers | Dr. Anna Summers, Ph. D, in Literature, Harvard no work of art is more enjoyable, multi-dimensional, and mysterious than Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita (1928-1940). A novel within a novel, it was conceived as a simple satire, a payback at the critics and censors who were hounding Bulgakov and keeping his work out of print. But the author’s talent led him beyond this simple task. Each subsequent draft acquired new facets without losing the unparalleled humor of the earlier design. We will meet Jesus, Pilate, and Satan; dance at the midnight ball with the dead; breathe in the unique atmosphere of the Moscow spring of 1929 — the height of the nEP — and watch the progress of the immortal love between Master and Margarita. We will watch excerpts from the 2005 screen version and examine multiple slides.

PRISON LITERATURE IN THE ARAB WORLD
Sendus Majanni | Arabic Literature Instructor
Arabic prison writing is a growing corpus of literature consisting of poems, novels, short stories, plays, and autobiographies. When we speak of prison literature in the Arab world, we are talking about political prisoners and forcibly disappeared individuals under tyrannies. The course is intended to serve as an introduction to the growing genre of prison literature in the Arab world and how it mirrors the realities of Arab societies. We aim to examine three translated memoirs mainly and read through interviews, plays, and poetry when necessary. Our discussions will be supported by scholarship on prisons, prison literature, torture, and torturers in the Arab world. We will look at how the relationship with God, family, and the other is changing under torture, and in exile behind bars. We will explore how imprisonment and daily torture is influencing conceptions of forgiveness, hope, justice, governance, and religious practice. Through the autobiographies and the accounts on other prisoners’ social and political lives we will examine the social systems and the individual and collective selves emerging inside the prison.

THE WORLD BEYOND THE CALIPHATE: GEOGRAPHY IN MEDIEVAL ARABIC SOURCES
Maggie Freeman | Ph.D. candidate in History of Architecture, MIT
The Middle Ages were a time of increased travel, contact, and interaction between Africa, Europe, and Asia. Most of us are probably familiar with explorers’ and travelers’ stories from this period as told from the European perspective, by figures such as Marco Polo. But what did the world look like through other peoples’ eyes during the medieval era? In this course, we’ll learn about medieval geographical knowledge from the point of view of Arabs in the Middle East. Traders, diplomats, pilgrims, and explorers ventured out from starting points such as Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo to far-flung destinations, creating writings and maps as they went of the peoples and places they encountered. This course examines the sources they left behind from their travels, reading primary sources and looking at maps and atlases to understand what people knew (or thought they knew) of the peripheries around the medieval caliphal center.

FELIX IMPERIUM: THE PEAK OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE
Allan Converse | Ph.D. in Comparative History, Brandeis University
In the modern popular mind, the early period of the Roman Empire (27 B.C. - 180 A.D.) is usually associated with the scandalous private lives of the emperors and dirty court politics as seen in dramatizations like I, Claudius. Yet the historian Edward Gibbon identified the early Roman Empire as the happiest time in human history. During this period of Roman rule, classical culture, a sophisticated economy, and the Latin language spread from the Mediterranean basin as far as Britain, Romania, and western Germany, thus laying the foundations for the Europe of the future. WHERE DID YOUR RIGHTS GO?: THE SUPREME COURT, POLITICS, AND THE CONSTITUTION
Joshua Frank | Local Educator
You probably remember where you were on June 24, 2022, the day Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court. now, since the election last november, the Court has emerged as perhaps the last guardrail of our democracy and a referee for possible sweeping changes to our federal government. Will the guardrails hold? How much of the Trump Administration’s vision is shared by the conservative majority? How will the answers to these questions change our lives? We will analyze the evolution of the Court through historical, political, and equity lenses, using White Rage by Carol Anderson, Dark Money by Jane Mayer, and The Scheme by Sheldon Whitehouse to guide us.

WHITE PEOPLE CHALLENGING RACISM: MOVING FROM TALK TO ACTION — PART 1
Kim Beamon, Christina Horner | Co-Facilitators
Our country has yet to address and repair the destruction of centuries of enslavement and segregation. now, white nationalism and anti-DEI backlash are in resurgence. We all have a role to play in responding to that — and it’s not “saviorism.” For 25 years, this intensive workshop has gathered small groups to build our antiracist analysis of ourselves and our society, practice speaking up about it, and take concrete actions to challenge its impacts within our workplaces, neighborhoods, and wherever we have influence. You’ll leave with new skills, a new support system, and a clearer vision for bringing justice to your world.
This five-session workshop welcomes participants of all identities. Please note: Attendance at the five sessions and completion of all assignments are expected. Each participant will receive a phone call from one of the facilitators prior to the start of this program to review these expectations.

In order to introduce various tools, woods, joinery, and sound construction techniques, typically you will make a Shaker-style table — or you can choose a modest project of your own if you have relevant experience — and begin to understand the finer details of woodworking, including tending to and sharpening your tools. You will provide your own materials, which will be discussed in first class. CCAE provides tools but students will be encouraged to buy some hand tools of their own — e.g., chisels, handsaw, combination square — and practice the art of maintaining them. The table project can be tailored to each student’s existing woodworking knowledge and experience so everyone is welcome.

SPOTLIGHT ON HOPE HOWARD
SCREENPRINTING & RELIEF PRINTMAKING INSTRUCTOR AND ARTIST
WHAT FIRST DREW YOU TO SCREENPRINTING AND RELIEF PRINTMAKING? WHAT MAKES IT YOUR PREFERRED MEDIUM COMPARED TO OTHERS?
I was drawn to printmaking because of its process. There are many steps of the process before you get to pull a print, making it engaging, explorative, and gives freedom to be intuitive. Art for me is not just a way of expression, but also a meditative practice. I love how versatile these methods are, and love to explore and play with new ways of using these methods
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT TEACHING AT CCAE?
CCAE is an amazing community space that has so much to offer! At CCAE I feel I have the perfect balance of creative autonomy and support from administration which gives me confidence as an instructor.
HOW HAS BEING AN INSTRUCTOR INFLUENCED YOUR OWN PERSONAL WORK?
What has influenced me the most are the participants in my courses and workshops! One of my beliefs as an instructor is to promote play and exploration in our art practice. Because students are encouraged to experiment, I am amazed and inspired by the methods and non-traditional ways we use these mediums. I always learn something new while teaching!
IN ADDITION TO YOUR PRINTMAKING CLASSES, YOU ALSO LEAD THE COURSE “UPCYCLE CLOTHES WITH DIY SCREEN PRINTING” – WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION TO CROSS OVER INTO TEXTILES AND UPCYCLING?
Consumerism is a huge problem in our society and is detrimental to our environment. I created this workshop for people to not only learn a new skill, but to find a way to make clothes or textiles “new” again. We learn how to make our own screen with materials you can easily and affordably access and you’ll be able to add your own personal flair to your wardrobe.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A STUDENT TAKING THEIR FIRST PRINTMAKING CLASS?
Your number one goal should be to have fun! The art of printmaking is a process, and you will learn and be supported through that processgiving you confidence to explore your creativity. You do not need to have an art background or any creative experience to be successful.
