BEGINNER DRAWING
Nicholas Mancini | Artist, namancini.com Jeremy Durling | Artist, jeremydurling.com A carefully planned series of exercises will introduce the beginner to the following elements of observational drawing: perspective, composition, light values, and contour. Students will begin by learning how to accurately measure and observe objects and the world around them. Classes will include instructor demonstrations and exercises in contour drawing, tonal drawing, and gesture drawing with plenty of time to practice in class and receive feedback from the instructor.

CAN’T DRAW? WHO SAYS?
Ellen Stutman | Artist, ellenstutman.com Designed for the “drawing challenged,” this class will help you move past your inhibitions and teach you some basic techniques of drawing. We’ll focus on learning to really see and how to get that down on paper. The emphasis will be on the process and not the result in this nonjudgmental classroom environment.

METAMORPHIC DRAWING
YoAhn Han | Assistant Professor at MassArt, yoahnhan.com Move beyond the fundamentals and break out of your comfort zone by exploring observational and abstract concepts with non-traditional drawing methods. Experiment with wet and dry media on paper while challenging form, shape, composition, and special relationships. Demonstrations, critiques, and virtual gallery visits bring your work to a more intriguing level. This class is designed for students that want to continue to refine their skills in the medium and refresh their understanding of concepts. The first half of this class focuses on drawing and moves into wet mediums of the students’ choice.

SKETCHBOOK SERIES
Bryan Ramey | Artist, artbyramey.com It doesn’t take much to draw. While your surroundings may seem claustrophobic from being indoors during this time, that just means you might need a different point of view. In this class we will discuss different drawing techniques and how to look at our surroundings in new and interesting perspectives. Elements of composition, line quality and some playfulness will combine to bring out the “reclusive artist” in you.

DRAWING WITH THE FIGURE

We will begin with a study of construction and proportion and move into capturing a sense of gesture and light. All classes will be held with a live nude model. Appropriate for both the advanced artist or the beginner.

PORTRAIT DRAWING (ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN)

A portrait is more than a face. Based in part from the book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards, the curriculum systematically introduces vital perceptual drawing skills to help organize visual information and capture the essence of your subjects. Classes will focus on gaining a familiarity with useful drawing strategies, materials, issues of composition, and attainment of the right ambiance to render effective works. Please bring medium/ soft pure graphite pencil and vine charcoal and 18” x 24” white drawing pad to first class. There is a live model in the class.

ANATOMY FOR ARTISTS

The ability to draw, paint or sculpt the human form is greatly enhanced if the artist truly understands the anatomic structures under the skin that produce the form. We will utilize a skeleton and anatomy atlases to learn about skeletal elements, deep and superficial muscle layers, and vasculature. We will set up poses with a live model and apply what we’ve learned. Prior drawing experience is strongly recommended, particularly from a live model.

BOTANICAL DRAWING
Sean Dunstan-Halliday | Artist Taking your inspiration from the historical tradition of botanical illustration, learn to draw botanical specimens in a wide range of drawing media, including graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor pencil. You will explore composition and personal style as you execute carefully observed perceptual drawings. The instructor will supply some plants, but you also will be asked to bring in specimens.

DRAWING THE LANDSCAPE IN COLOR
Gillian Frazier | Artist, gillianfrazier.com This is an opportunity to improve your skills in order to draw the landscape. You will work from reference photos and from nature when drawing. You will be introduced to basic drawing concepts through different weekly assignments, including shape, line, atmospheric perspective, and color with assignments and instructor demonstrations. Various mediums will be explored such as pencils, colored pencils, oil pastels, pastels and mixed media.

DRAWING AND PAINTING CAT AND DOG PORTRAITS

Portrait drawing and painting enhances and supports deep seeing into another living being. This process bridges our differences and can create enhanced intimacy with non-human species. In this class, we will focus on painting and drawing portraits of special cats and dogs in our lives, so we will celebrate their faces and names to help tell their stories whether they are still with us or passed on. We will also create a Facebook group and have an online exhibit of our works.
