SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES IN U.S. PHOTOGRAPHY
Leslie K. Brown | Ph.D. Art History, Independent Curator and Educator Since its invention, photography has been used to document the human condition and affect social change, for good and for ill. Via a series of thematic lectures, we will explore photographs as constructions of the past as well as objects that express the political and cultural climates of their times. This class also examines how such images have shaped, and continue to shape, Americans’ collective perceptions of Western expansion, the Civil War, mass immigration, the Great Depression, 9/11, and social movements of today. We will also consider how marginalized voices, including formerly enslaved peoples, Native Americans, and Civil Rights activists, were both used by and utilized photography to achieve their goals.
