Books programme overview

The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) has a high-quality book publishing programme, published in partnership with Cambridge University Press. Together, we publish new titles that aid busy mental health clinicians in their day-to-day clinical practice, publish key texts that are aligned with the College’s mission to support psychiatric trainees through their studies, and also encourage the recruitment of medical students into the field of psychiatry.

We are interested in publishing content by established and up-and-coming clinicians and researchers, in a variety of different formats, including clinical handbooks aimed at practitioners, edited reference books, professional books, research volumes, revision guides, and the Cambridge Elements series (short books for publication simultaneously online and in print). We also publish a small number of books for a general readership, to provide accessible resources that promote positive mental health and wellbeing for a wider audience.

Cover design: Andrew Ward BALLATT, CAMPLING AND MALONEY INTELLIGENT KINDNESS At a time of renewed concern about health, social care, and national unity, the authors reassert the value of the Welfare State for society as a whole, not simply for those in need. Years of relentless regulatory and structural reforms have not prevented scandals, yet have exhausted, demoralised and alienated staff. The work we ask these people to undertake is hard. It can be frightening, risky and uncertain. It requires close attention, sensitivity, skill and support. Grounded in lived experience, and perspectives drawn from many disciplines, Intelligent Kindness illuminates how to develop and sustain healthy organisational culture and effective, humane practice. ‘The thread of intelligent kindness needs to weave through and throughout all our lives. Humans are the carers of everything, and we urgently need help. This book is it.’ Phil Hammond NHS doctor, campaigner, comedian and author of Staying Alive – How to Improve your Health and Your Healthcare ‘A hopeful, enticing and thoroughly practical blue-print for better way forward. It is essential reading for anyone who came into social care to make the world a truly better place.’ Nick Andrews Research and Practice Development Officer, Wales School for Social Care Research PRAISE FOR THE FIRST EDITION ‘This wonderful book is an urgent plea for kindness as both the driving force and the touchstone of healthcare in the NHS ... If ruled the world, would arrange for everyone who wields any power in the NHS to be locked in a room until they had read it. But then, of course, that is precisely the sort of dictatorial behaviour that the authors see as the antithesis of intelligent kindness, and so am obliged to fall back on an unrestrained enthusiasm that hope will prove infectious.’ Dr Iona Heath Past President of the RCGP in a review in the BMJ JOHN BALLATT PENELOPE CAMPLING CHRIS MALONEY INTELLIGENT KINDNESS REHABILITATING THE WELFARE STATE Second Edition Edition Everything You Need to Know About OCD Dr Lynne M. New and upcoming titles PARIS FADS AND FALLACIES IN PSYCHIATRY Royal College of Psychiatrists JOEL PARIS SECOND EDITION 2ND ED FADS AND FALLACIES IN PSYCHIATRY Cover image: Busà Photography Moment Getty Images Joel Paris is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at McGill University, Quebec, Canada. He heads personality disorder clinics at two hospitals, is the former Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, and has published over 25 books. This text examines the fads and fallacies, both past and present, that have plagued psychiatric diagnosis, treatments and research. It argues that such practices have led to an over-diagnosis of conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD and autism. It examines the over-treatment of psychiatric disorders with pharmaceuticals, and asks if neuroscience will actually hold the answers to the biggest questions in the field. Thoroughly updated in light of new research, this new edition addresses some of the more recent developments in psychiatry, including behavioural genetics, genome-wide association studies, and brain imaging. It looks at new advances in psychotherapies and argues for a broad biopsychosocial model. The book will inform psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, other mental health professionals, and medical students of the limits of mental health practice and the importance of adopting cautious conservatism and the principles of evidence-based practice. While we tend to tend to view psychiatric fads as oddities of the past Paris not only touches on exemplar historical treatments such as removal of the colon but, more importantly, lists and critiques a number of contemporary fallacious domains and memes. In this superb book, melding a warm critique with a wealth of personal experience, Paris demonstrates that Psychiatry continues to have difficulty in embracing doubt and, like nature abhoring a vacuum, continues to proselytize all-embracing theories about illness cause and management based on hope rather than science. Professor Gordon Parker, Scientia Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales
