Thank you to all of our families who have offered their support and encouragement as we work our way through the coronavirus pandemic. It is a frightening and challenging situation, which changes daily, and for which there are few precedents for us to draw on. Next week will be a learning one for us all. Online learning is a very different thing to learning within a classroom, and our teachers and students will negotiate their way through the week, learning from each other, and helping us to prepare for circumstances which may see us forced to close for a longer period of time. Students in the Middle and Senior Schools have been given some guidelines today about how to manage their time and how to approach online learning. Teachers will be in touch with students throughout the week, and students should make themselves available to online conferencing during their normal class times if this is required. The School will not be closed next week. If students need to collect items or books, they may do so, and the Weickhardt Library will be open each day between 8.00am and 4.00pm for students to work quietly. Some of our staff will be working from home, but others will be at School. We will also be running the scheduled SACs for our Year 12 students (see below).
Next Week (Week 9) - Unit 3 & 4 SACS While the VCAA are making many allowances for our Year 12 students during this crisis, they continue to require School Assessed Coursework (SACs) to be completed in School and within a limited timeframe, and for this reason we are asking our Year 12 students to attend School next week to sit for their scheduled SACs. These will be completed in the Performing Arts Centre. This large area will only be used for SACs, allowing for maximum distancing of desks and receive a regular wipe down by cleaning staff. Students are asked to wait outside the northern doors of the PAC 10 minutes prior to the start of their SAC. They should not enter the PAC until invited to do so by the SAC Supervisor. Students may wear neat casual clothes (not School uniform). As always, students who are absent from a SAC must attain a Medical Certificate and should email our Year 12 VCE Co-Ordinator, Mr Marcus Jones at mj@cgs.vic.edu.au or call the School if they are unable to attend. Clearly, if a student is ill, we ask that he does not attend, and follows the above procedure. I wish everyone all the very best for the week ahead and encourage our students to enjoy a great holiday commencing Friday afternoon 27 March 2020. If the Government’s position on schooling has not changed, we intend to commence School again at the beginning of next Term for all students on Wednesday 15 April. Whilst there are many uncertainties surrounding us at this time, one thing that has become very clear is just how capable our students are and that together with their support, we will get through this. Next week provides a good opportunity for us to test our online systems and ensure that we continually improve. We are all learning a great deal at the moment, and it has been nice to see the compassion and understanding that we have all shared. We need to stay connected, so please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. Details regarding online schooling and expectations for students will be sent out later today, however parents are encouraged to keep an eye on Schoology Notifications to get a sense of their son’s workload. As we come to terms with the new reality of COVID 19 and restructure our learning program to a distance learning model, I extend my sincere gratitude to families for their patience, understanding and support in difficult times. If we can be sure of anything, it is that we are in a great place to be able to work together to embrace these new challenges and find the necessary support and care within our community.

The week ahead will help us get a better understanding of how our distant learning systems are working and where we need to make adjustments. We are in unchartered waters and all learning together as parents, teachers and students. As you think about the time you will have with your son over the break, I cannot overstate the importance of engaging your children in conversation. Through conversation children learn how to think, how to reflect, and how to express themselves. It is a time for them to share their hopes as well as their fears. This is a time when our children need to know someone is listening. Together we have enjoyed a marvellous first Term. The tone of the School has been positive, cheerful and purposeful. I am delighted with the way the students are going about their lessons and activities, and I am extremely grateful to the parents for their continued support and encouragement at home and at School. Unfortunately, due to the current climate, the AGSV Swimming Finals have been postponed until later in the year. Meanwhile, the AGSV vs APS Representative matches that were scheduled for next Tuesday have been cancelled. It is unfortunate, but congratulations to those students who gained selection to represent the AGSV. All Summer Sport has now officially finished, as the remaining Lawn Bowls, Kayaking and Triathlon events have all been cancelled. A decision is yet to be made regarding the Winter Sport season; however, preseason Sport training will not take place until further notice. Students and parents will be notified once an outcome has been reached. Towards the end of the Summer season, members of the Triathlon squad competed in three Aquathon races held at Boroondara Sports Complex and Hawthorn Aquatic Centre. Dr Jack Smith, Teacher in Charge of Triathlon, provided the following summary of the events: This first race in the grueling series of three Aquathons was scheduled at Boroondara Sports Complex (BSC). In the shorter distance, Joshua Carlin (Year 7) blitzed the field, which was an impressive start to his sporting career at the School. All other students competed in the Adult Race: 1.5km run, 250m swim, repeated 3 times. The young Camberwell contingent raced competitively against much older athletes; impressive results were achieved by Marcus Liew, Thomas Kohne, Elliot Fry (Year 9) and Lucas Rodriguez (Year 8), but the day belonged to Ryan Humphries (Year 8) who, in demonstrating that his run is as impressive as his outstanding swim, won the Gold Medal by some two minutes! The two adults who shared the podium with Ryan, were both experienced adult triathletes. This win was a remarkable achievement. In the second race, also at BSC, Joshua further demonstrated his emerging talent with a strong race in the shorter distance. This was followed up by the longer race with some very close racing from Lucas, Ryan, Ben Gale (Year 9) and Triathlon Captain Alex Lew (Year 11). With competitors playing to their strengths in the run or the swim, this enabled much overtaking providing entertainment for the spectators. The lead changed several times with Alex leading the race at one stage, however, he was closely pipped at the finish by Lucas to take second male finisher followed by Alex in third. Ryan and Ben followed shortly afterwards. This was an impressive effort by all competitors, especially considering they raced in the open age division. The third and final Aquathon took place in perfect conditions at Hawthorn Aquatic Centre. While the number racing was small, the competition was intense, with little separating those who ended up standing on the podium. Ray He (Year 9), competing in his first Aquathon, came second to a very experienced adult triathlete in the shorter race, with 13-year-old Lucas Rodriguez taking third to two similarly strong men in the longer race. Elliot Fry finished the race impressively, never losing his focus in this anaerobic event. Hence, Camberwell Grammar School distinguished itself once again. Well done to all students who participated in the events. Members of the Kayaking team also competed in the Victorian School Kayaking Championships last weekend in Nagambie. Charlie Lockwood, Teacher in Charge of Kayaking provided the following account of the event: A beautiful day and flat conditions meant we were in for a good day in Nagambie for the Victorian School Kayaking Championships. With our team ready to go for the 3.7km events in the morning, we showed our fierce competitive side as many races ended in a photo finish, including Henry Baker (Year 9) and Adam Matthews (Year 10) , and Matthew Wakefield and Jack Maitland (both Year 9), both in the U/16 TK2 event. Max Mckenzie (Year 8) performed admirably as an U/14 competing in the U/16 K1 event, showing that he could compete in a higher age group and still give everyone a run for their money. As we headed into the afternoon’s 200m sprint events, our paddlers got a chance to show off their speed and skill. David Thomas (Year 10) showed once again that he is a force to be reckoned with, achieving bronze in a highly competitive U/18 K1 event. We even took a clean sweep in the U/14 TK2 event, with the pairs of Christian Kinsella and Cameron Yeang (both Year 8), Shen Rong and Jack Zhang (both Year 7) and Alan Wang (Year 8) and George Baker (Year 7) achieving gold, silver and bronze respectively. Special mention to the students who paddled in the prestigious K4 event - Conrad Thornton (Year 10), Will Murray (Year 12), David Thomas (Year 10) and Daniel Watson (Year 11) and achieved silver. I would like to give a big thank you to the parents that volunteered and towed the trailer, as the day would not have gone ahead with these people. Summer Sport Colours have been advertised to students on Schoology and on the window of the Sports Office. Appeals must be made before the end of term to be considered. Winter sport team lists and training schedules will be posted on Schoology. Students will need to carefully check which team they have been allocated to, their training day, time, venue and teacher in charge. Please note that they are subject to change. For sports and teams that are yet to hold trials, they will take place in the lead up to the season starting. Any student allocated to a team who is wanting to trial for a higher graded team should attend the training session of that team at the beginning of the season. Sport Report Camberwell’s A Lawn Bowls team played in the semi-finals on the weekend in a close and fierce game that was tied by the final end. An incredible shot by Kristian Bite (Year 10) late in the end gave Camberwell the point they needed to win. In the final, which also played on Saturday, the team took an early lead and overall won most ends. However, just before Camberwell could take the victory, Trinity elected to use their “power-play” which gave them double points for that end. They earned a bonus 8 points, giving them an insurmountable lead for the remaining ends left in the game. Congratulations to Hieu, Kristian, William and Elijah for their efforts this season to finish runners up in the AGSV comp. The B and C teams also played on Saturday, both going 1-1 for their two games. Camberwell’s cycling squad competed at Victoria University, Hoppers Crossing, last Saturday in their final round of the season. In the Senior A race, Zac Kelly (Year 11) took silver, winning him the 2019/20 overall Senior A Series for the second year in a row. In the Senior C race, Alex Guorgi (Year 11) rounded out the season to finish the series in second place. In the Senior D race, Aren Dosser (Year 9) had a dominant finish to the season, winning his race, followed closely by Luke Ryan (Year 10) in third. With his consistent performances, Luke Ryan also won the Senior D Series. Marcus Liew (Year 9) had a brilliant race as he pushed for a series podium finish, winning his race, yet just falling shy of the series podium by one point as he concluded the season in fourth place.
