From the Headmaster
It was terrific to welcome all of our students back to School this week – to see their excitement at being with each other again, and learning together in class-rooms once more. We are not yet at ‘business as usual’, but we are steadily and cautiously heading in that direction! The students have been great using sanitizer and wiping down their desks and following the new procedures at the Canteen. Thanks to our parents who are helping observe the new system of drop-offs and pick-ups – only Junior School parents should use Gate 1 on Mont Albert Road, all others should use the Chatfield Avenue zone. This has helped ease congestion and speed the process up. Semester Two classes have now begun and with them a sense of new beginnings as we continue to adapt to a Covid world. It is exciting to be able to restart some of our co-curricular programs, with modified Sport training commencing next week, the pool reopening for limited numbers and the gym to open after 21 June. It is hoped that we will be able to run a brief, three week Winter Sports Season with other AGSV Schools at the start of next Term if we are permitted to do so by then. Small music ensembles are beginning to rehearse together again, and we remain hopeful that we will be able to have some Concerts before the end of the year. We would love to get back together in larger groups, to experience and celebrate our community, but we will continue to follow the advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer, which has been so successful in limiting the spread of the coronavirus. Can I ask that parents and students remain vigilant about any symptoms of ill health at all – even minor sniffles or coughs – and to stay at home even if those symptoms seem very mild, until those symptoms have fully resolved, or until a doctor has given a medical clearance? We still need to be vigilant about our health and we know well how quickly a single case of coronavirus can spread throughout a community. Our best chance of getting back to full operation quickly is to be particularly careful about minor illnesses.
DELF Junior Preparation Program Our Head of French, Ms Naomi Eckersley, would like to encourage our French students to undertake the DELF Junior preparation program again in Term 3, following last year’s successful collaboration with the Alliance Française and Camberwell Girls Grammar School. In 2019, our students achieved an average of 87.5% for the A1 level and 89% for the A2 level. The DELF diploma preparation course is aimed at secondary school students who learn French as a foreign language, or for French native speakers who live outside France. The DELF diplomas evaluate a student’s ability to communicate using real-life situations and authentic documents. This year, the 10-week course will be entirely online from 4.30pm to 6.00pm on Thursdays. An A1 (Years 7 and 8) and an A2 (Years 9 and 10) will be offered. Enrolments, enquiries and more information can be found here at the Alliance Française website. The exams are scheduled to take place at the Alliance Française in St Kilda this October and November. It would have taken a lot more than a frosty 6 degree morning to deter the sheer excitement from the students at being reunited with their friends on Monday morning. Some 11 weeks earlier, they intrepidly departed for online learning, with the temperature nearing 30 degrees. In that time so much has happened, much has changed and we have all learnt so much. The students have notably grown; both in physical stature and confidence. Whilst there is a long way to go and much more learning to consolidate; it is great to have the students back with us at School. Thanks to all the students and parents who ensured that the students returned impeccably presented. This week marked the start of Semester 2, with the students starting new timetables, electives and languages. We anticipate it may take some time to adjust to the subtle changes and earlier starts.
Cashless Cafeteria A reminder that the Cafeteria is now cashless, meaning students will need to download the Flexischools App. Once it is set up and we are back to normal, their account will be linked to the student’s student card. Until then, students must pre-order by 9.00am on the day of purchase. With water fountains temporarily disconnected, students should remember to bring labelled water bottles to ensure they can remain hydrated throughout the day.
