From the Headmaster Welcome Back – Again! As we conclude this week, our community is complete once more. I am very grateful to those of our students who remained at home over the past two weeks to ensure their safety and the safety of the entire community. There has been so much confusion and mixed messaging in the face of this rapidly changing epidemic, and I appreciate that it has not been easy for those caught up in the self-quarantine through no fault of their own. We are glad that all are well and have now returned to School.
French Student Exchange: CGS-Lyon 2020 At Thursday’s Assembly we heard from students who participated in a very successful French Exchange program last year. They hosted students from France in the middle of the year, and then travelled to Lyon over the Christmas break. We are now seeking expressions of interest for this year’s 6-week reciprocal exchange to Lyon, France. Participating CGS students will host students from Lycée Assomption Bellevue when they come to study at Camberwell Grammar School this July and August. Students will be required to pay their own airfare (approximately $2,600), with travel insurance provided by the School. It is anticipated that our students will depart early December 2020 and be home mid-January 2021. An Information Evening for parents and students is being held on Thursday 20 February at 7.00pm in M44. Middle School Curriculum Information Evening Many thanks to all of the parents who attended our Curriculum Information Session run by Mr Scott Wyatt on Tuesday 11 February. The evening provided some excellent advice as we start a new School year, giving information on how to establish a good routine and maximise the opportunities at CGS. If you were unable to attend this session you can view the presentation here.
House Athletics Trials A sea of colour engulfed the Keith Anderson Oval (KAO) this afternoon for week 1 of 3 of the Year 6 and 7 House Athletics Trials for Brigland, Clifford, Derham and Macneil. The students had some fun as they took part in high jump, vortex, standing long jump, shot put, sprints and middle distance events. These trials will help to select teams for the coveted Inter-House Athletics Carnival later in the year. All boys will take part in this through multiple events aimed at a range of abilities. Houses that did not take part today, will do so next week.

This afternoon Year 11 volunteers led Year 6 and 7 students from Steven, Schofield, Robinson and Summons in team building games aimed at helping the boys establish new connections and form alliances within their Houses that will increasingly gain significance through their Camberwell journey. Sincere thanks to the senior students who took time out of their own activities time in the Senior School. Houses that did not take part today will do so next week.
Year 8 Outdoor Education Activities Congratulations to our Year 8 students who took part in the first round of Outdoor Education for 2020. The students took part in two training sessions prior to the full-day excursion. The program is a huge administrative feat and we are most grateful to Ms McDougall who has had an exceptionally busy start to the year. Welcome Back – Again!
Wednesday 19 February, 3.40pm to 9.00pm Thursday 20 February, 3.40pm to 6.00pm On these two evenings there will be an opportunity for you to meet with your son’s Classroom Teacher, Specialists and Support Staff. The purpose of this introductory interview is to provide an opportunity for you to meet your son’s teachers and to share important information about your son. As this is the first occasion new families have had to meet with Specialists, we request that unless you are a new family to CGS Junior School or have a pressing issue to discuss, please do not book an interview with Specialists. These meetings are for parents only however if as a last resort you need to bring your Junior School boy or siblings we request they are adequately supervised or quietly occupied outside classrooms during interview times. Please note, due to Government regulations, students who are not booked into Aftercare cannot join this group in outside play. As the Library is used for interviews it is also unavailable. Parking is available in front of Kingussie, in Pre-Prep parking at this time and through Gate 3 to the underground car park.

Junior School House Swimming Carnival All students in Years 3, 4 and 5 will participate in our Junior School Inter-house Swimming Carnival on Friday 28 February from 12.00 noon to 2.30pm in the CGS Sports Centre pool. Please note that students will be dismissed from the pool. We invite and encourage parents to attend, please be aware that the spectator area is a mezzanine level above the pool and can be quite warm. We ask that parents abide by the Privacy Act – no filming or photography of other students please. All students participating will need a House swim cap, these can still be purchased from the Junior School office or PLUS shop. Please contact Mrs Dune Richards in the Junior School Office if you are having trouble getting a swim cap.

It was fantastic to see students and families embrace the celebration of the AGSV Summer Centenary Round last weekend. Those who visited the Camberwell Room last Saturday experienced some of the School’s sporting history and enjoyed a mini Centenary cupcake. A similar exhibition will be held during the Winter season on Saturday 2 May. With three rounds of Sport to go in the Summer season, including this weekend, Friends of Groups are busy organising end of season Presentation Evenings. They provide a fantastic opportunity for students and parents to reflect on the season that was and hear from special guest speakers. Awards are handed out on the night as well. I strongly encourage students to attend their respective sport’s function. Winter Sport trials will be advertised in the near future. Not all sports trials; however, students will be notified through Schoology and it will also be listed in future Bulletin reports. Notifications of Sport cancellations due to weather are posted on Twitter @CamberwellSport and TeamApp camberwellgrammarsport.teamapp.com. More information about the Sport Program can also be found on TeamApp which can also be downloaded from the App Store. Sport Report In the opening game of the AGSV Centenary Round last Thursday, Camberwell’s 1st Tennis team faced a skilful Ivanhoe team. The first round of doubles was close, with the combination of David Maes (Year 12) and Lachlan Wei (Year 10) overpowering their opponents in the tie-break. Lachlan O’Neill (Year 9) and Andrew Lee (Year 10) also managed to close out the tie-break strongly in the second round to win their match. Andrew Lee continued his commanding run into the singles matches as he fought to win in another tie-break. Eventually, the Camberwell team lost 4 sets to 8, as Ivanhoe’s consistency challenged our young side. Our team sits fourth on the ladder and looks towards a finals appearance. Page 2

Team Captain Freddie Askew (Year 9) led the 9B Tennis team in strong spirit against Ivanhoe. Solid performances came from Nicholas Shim (Year 9), who began with a 6 - 0 in his singles round and played with Erik Simo-Orgonas (Year 9) in a doubles, winning easily 6-2; Isaac Lin and William Zhang (Year 9) played an exceptional doubles match winning 6-3 as they both went on to win their individual singles matches as well to bring home a victory in 9 sets to 3. Looking to retain the Alan Graham Trophy and to keep their finals chances alive, the 1st XI Cricket had plenty to play for in their clash against Ivanhoe last Thursday. Following a hesitant opening partnership, Will Stamper (Year 9) and Jordan McCleery (Year 11) were brought forward, and batted conservatively to steady the innings. Stamper stood strong and was able to make a patient 36 runs. Some late innings hitting from Connor Laird (Year 10) and Matthew Lewison (Year 12) cemented Camberwell’s total of 8/147 from 50 overs. With only a small total to defend, the team got off to a flying start, taking three early wickets thanks to openers Connor Laird and Nicholas Graves (Year 9). Spinners Lachie Ross (Year 10), Ned Bennet (Year 12) and Marc Dalla Riva (Year 11) all then took wickets, with Ivanhoe eventually bowled out for 116, giving Camberwell a much needed win. The 2nd XI Cricket team followed up with a win of their own, also against Ivanhoe Grammar School. Mitch Horn (Year 10) showed great maturity throughout the match, battling through a scratchy start to enable a masterful finish. Year 10s Harry Gittins and Simon Lewison (both Year 10) also made sizable contributions at the crease. As Ivanhoe looked to chase a total of 5/187, Luke Matthews (Year 12) took two early wickets with his signature yorkers. Lewis Winkett’s pace then helped to close out the match in the 30th over, with Camberwell seizing a well-earned victory. Camberwell’s 1sts Table Tennis continued their victorious run, though they were challenged in all rubbers by PEGS in a well fought contest. Nathan Shi and Ethan Tang (both Year 12) continued to prevail over their competition with unmatched consistency. Sam Kabourakis (Year 12) fought back in his reverse singles match after losing the first set to take the next three and consequently the rubber. Year 7, Justin Kwan, was also welcomed into the squad. The side won 14 rubbers 43 games – 1 rubber 7 games. The 10A Basketball team hit the court eager to redeem themselves after an underwhelming start to the new year. From the outset, their strong defence and disciplined structure in transition proved to be successful. Benny Grayson’s (Year 10) unrivalled first half saw him net 12 points, and the team’s strength was made clear when he effectively tagged with Thomas Power (Year 10), who slotted five baskets in the second half as they won 45 – 38. 3rd Gold Basketball defeated Ivanhoe, 57 to 39. Harry McColl (Year 11) scored 13 points as he persistently found his way to the basket and Oliver Purcell (Year 11) became a threat from beyond the three-point arc. 7A Cricket hosted Ivanhoe on the Keith Anderson Oval turf, with promising new talent on display. After a confident start to the match from Ivanhoe, Saveen Seneviratne (Year 7) came on to bowl and broke a 53-run partnership in his second over. Angus Rynne and Sam Grlj (both Year 7) then took two and three wickets respectively. Camberwell’s batting innings began confidently with Angus Rynne and Mitchell Hedley (Year 7) scoring freely and putting on a handy 43 run partnership. Adam Li and Daniel Teele (both Year 7) also batted well for 20 and 36 respectively. The team passed Ivanhoe’s score five wickets down and with six overs to spare. Zac Kelly (Year 11) competed in the Senior Male A race on the Jayco Sun Tour around the Botanic Gardens on Sunday. In a courageous effort, Zac led from the start, tearing around the course. As the following pack closed on Zac on Anderson hill, he dug deep to hold on for a second-place finish. Careers Night 2020 The annual Careers Night is fast approaching and both parents and students in Years 10-12 are invited to attend. It looks like being a fabulous evening with a new and diverse range of interesting speakers and careers already secured. All Year 10 boys, for whom the evening is compulsory, are encouraged to complete my survey (link found on Schoology) to ensure their specific career interests are represented. Please reserve the evening of Thursday 28 March in your diary. There will be sausages (and a few veggie burgers) provided for all Year 10 boys from 3.30pm.

La Trobe University - Aspire Scholarships Aspire is an initiative which recognises the positive impact students have had on their community through volunteering when assessing a student’s application to study with La Trobe University. Successful students are rewarded with a conditional offer into La Trobe degrees as early as September. In 2020, 40 commencing students received Aspire Scholarships valued up to $20,000. The scholarships were offered to the highest achieving students at in their respective La Trobe University courses. To find out more about Aspire click here.
