Please note that the email address to be used when signing into the School Portal is the School’s generated email (the Schoology log in, which was recently emailed to you) and not your own personal email address. Please note also that our Sporting Fixtures are now located in the School Portal. If you are having any difficulty logging into the Portal, please contact our Computer Department on 9835 1777 and they will be able to assist you.

Year 4 and 5 Parent Information/Cyber Safety Presentation Our next Parent Education Seminar will be on the topic of Cyber Safety, an issue many of us struggle with as parents. This seminar will occur on Thursday 28 February at 6.45pm until 8.30pm in the Camberwell Room.

The session is for parents only.

The presenter for our evening will be Robyn Treyvaud, who is the founder of Cyber Safe Kids and a wellrespected Cyber Safety expert. Robyn provides advice to the media, industry and Governments in Australia, ensuring a balanced and evidence-based view on her work within schools in Australia and Asia for the past decade. She assists educators, schools and parent communities to understand the challenges of living and working in the digital world, equipping them with tools to meet these challenges.

Please note that it is required for at least one parent from each Year 4 family to attend, and it is strongly encouraged that Year 5 parents also avail themselves of this important opportunity. 2019 Young Citizen of the Year I am very pleased to announce and congratulate Rohan Hodges (Year 11) who has been named Boroondara Council’s Young Citizen of the Year for 2019. Rohan was recognised for his leadership skills and a commitment to helping others, much of it demonstrated through his involvement in programs at our School.

Rohan was recognised for his involvement in the Lord Mayor’s ‘Youth in Philanthropy’ program, and the Projec10 program, and for achieving the rank of ‘Sergeant’ in the Camberwell Grammar School Army Cadet Unit. Congratulations to Rohan – a worthy recipient.

Middle School Outdoor Activities Congratulations to all Year 8 boys who took part in Round 2 of the Outdoor Education Program, ahead of next week’s full day excursions to various locations for: rowing, horse riding, sailing, abseiling/rock climbing, mountain biking and white water kayaking. A great time was had by all.

Next Wednesday, Schoology workshops will take place in the William Angliss Building, commencing at 6.30pm to 7.00pm. Year 7 parents are then invited to attend the Year 7 camp information session in the Middleton Theatre at 7.15pm. Following this, parents are invited to drinks and nibbles with their son’s Form Teacher in various locations around the PAC foyer. This presents an excellent opportunity to meet with other parents from the same Form group. If you are intending to come, please ensure that you have completed the TryBooking Form that was emailed earlier in the week.

Courage to Care Incursion for Year 8 Next week Year 8 will be participating in a Courage to Care workshop, that aims to promote ‘Upstander’ behaviour. The workshop includes interactive displays as well as a presentation from a Holocaust Survivor.

This is an excellent lead into the upcoming Year 8 English Text- ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’.

Given that this is a voluntary group, boys are encouraged to donate a gold coin to the organisation.

Progress Check Year 6 and 7 will receive a ‘Progress Check’ next week to provide a general indication of the academic progress.

The Progress Check is designed to be a simple ‘heads up’, early in the year, for students and parents. It is not a detailed assessment of the student, but an early indication of how he is going. The Progress Check includes: An indication of how the student is going so far in academic work, relative to the School’s normal expectations for his year level; and they give indication of how the student is doing so far in key ‘learning behaviours’ of organisation, focus and attention.

If you have any enquiries about your son’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact his Form Teacher or Mr Wyatt (Deputy Head of Middle School) – it is always best to seek clarity early.

A special mention to Matthew Hoyling in the 7A cricket team who took a hat trick last Saturday. Next Wednesday, a select group of Year 6 boys will compete at the Junior School AGSV Swimming Carnival at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.. The Year 6 boys selected are: Nicholas Wang, William Watson, Ross Sykiotis, Arya Noor, Jonathan Chong,Nikolas Casale, Joah Quach and Nicholas Lysikatos.

Music Careers Calendar Support Groups Links to Flyers

Junior School Year 4 spent three days at Anglesea this week, and last week Year 5 headed to the bush of Lancefield. The camps extend over three days and take the boys away from the comforts of home into a different environment with its own set of challenges, opportunities and expectations. These camps give boys time to be with one another, to share experiences that may be new and challenging, as well as the opportunity to get a better sense of themselves. The camps focus on outdoor experiences that encourage participation, cooperation, team building, problem-solving and the growth of confidence in an enjoyable, supportive setting.

Netting in the lagoon at Airlie’s Inlet had the Year 4 boys totally engaged with the thrill of the catch and the wonder of the variety of creatures they had gathered to admire, assess and release. They were up to their knees in nature and loving it! While there was excitement there was also plenty of education as our naturalist experts presented the context and asked questions that required the boys to think beyond who had caught the biggest or brightest specimen.

Mastering the skills of canoeing and working cooperatively to get the craft to go in the intended direction had plenty of fun, frustration and challenge. For some boys it came easily, while others had to work at it.

Boys were learning about themselves and were gaining the satisfaction that comes from adding a new skill and experience to one’s repertoire. Many learnt the value of persisting and repeated practice. Climbing the lighthouse took some boys into their uncomfortable zone, but for them the journey down the stairs, having done the lap around the top, was filled with pride and achievement.

Earlier, at the Year 5 camp with its array of initiative and group problem solving tasks to get the boys working together, it was evident with each rotation that the boys were developing a sense of team. They were thinking more in terms of the group rather than as a collection of individuals. They were also developing respect for suggestions and skills that were available through their group members. The momentum gathered over the course of the camp as the boys experienced canoeing, bike riding, archery, and the challenges of rogaining.

It is when the boys feel challenged by something new or daunting that they have the greatest opportunity to develop. Leaving home for 3 days is a challenge to many. Having done it the boys have gained some inner strength or resilience that can be applied to a variety of new situations. The boys who lingered at the edge of trying something new, but eventually took the plunge, came away feeling something good had happened within them.

In amongst all the adrenalin, perspiration and problem solving the camp experiences at Year 4 and 5 encouraged friendship, built confidence and generated a lot of laughs and fond memories. It was a privilege to have that time with the boys.

Junior School Photo Day On the morning of Tuesday, 26 February, the Junior School class, individual and family photographs will be taken. Boys are asked to ensure they are particularly neat and tidy for these photos. Correct summer uniform with the shirt as the outer garment is required. Please refer to page 24 of the ‘Information for Parents 2019’ booklet for the School policy on hair and jewellery. Boys with brothers will have a family photo. If all siblings are in Junior School you do not need to do anything, a family photo will be taken. For siblings in Middle School and Senior School you should have already returned a booking slip in order to ensure these students are able to leave their class. Unfortunately, if your son is late or absent on this day we cannot re-schedule photographs but you will still receive a class photo.

Junior School Soiree Each term, a Music Soiree is held in the Junior School, giving instrumental students the opportunity to gain performance experience before a warm and encouraging audience. Our Term 1 Soiree will be held on Wednesday 13 March at 6.00pm in the Music and Movement Centre. If your son would like to perform in the Term 1 Soiree, you may download the form from your class portal page. Forms are also available from the Music and Movement Centre. We ask that your son’s music teacher completes the performance details. It is important that music teachers assist their students in the preparation of their performance piece. Forms for the Term 1 Soiree must be returned to Mrs Thomas by Monday 4 March.

This informal concert should conclude at about 7.30pm. Boys who learn an instrument outside the school are most welcome to participate.

Junior School House Swimming Carnival

Junior School

All students in Year 3, 4 and 5 will participate in our Junior School Inter-house Swimming Carnival on Friday, 1 March from 12.30pm to 3.00pm at the CGS Sports Complex pool. We invite and encourage parents to attend, please be aware the spectator area is a mezzanine level above the pool and can be quite warm.

Wearing suitable clothes, bringing water and leaving the area occasionally should help keep spectators as comfortable as possible. All boys participating will need a House swim cap, these can still be purchased from the PLUS shop. Please contact Mrs Collins if you are having trouble getting a swim cap.

Sport Summer Sports Season There are two more rounds of the AGSV Summer Sport season, including this weekend, and only one more week of training for most sports. However, many sports continue beyond the weekend of Saturday 2 March, such as Cycling, Golf, Kayaking, Lawn Bowls, Orienteering, Squash, Swimming and Triathlon. Students should contact the teacher in charge of their team and/or sport to ensure they understand and can meet the sport commitments.

There are plenty of exciting fixtures this weekend, including the Swimming squads’ Duel in the Pool on Friday evening and the Cycling squads’ criterium event in Geelong on Saturday. Also, Firsts Basketball are playing their annual match against the Old Boys in a fun but competitive spectacle. They’re playing on Court 1 at School from 11.20am.

Sports Presentation Evenings Sport Presentation Evenings have been organised for some sports, following the completion of the season.

Keep an eye out for invitations. They’re always enjoyable evenings with guest speakers, so it would be fantastic to see as many students and parents there as possible.

Winter Sports Winter Sport trials for Firsts teams will commence in the last few weeks of Term 1 in preparation for the beginning of the AGSV Winter Sport season in Term 2. For more information, or if you have any concerns, please email dos@cgs.vic.edu.au.

With the Winter Sport season fast approaching, a reminder that the School has organised for mouthguard fittings on Friday 1 March. Refer to the flyer with the Bulletin for more information and fill out the necessary forms to have a fitted mouthguard made for your son.

Running Sessions Running sessions with Craig Mottram continue to take place throughout the remainder of Term 1 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. The sessions start at 6.45am, held on the Keith Anderson Oval, and are open to students of all ages and abilities. The focus of the sessions is to improve running technique, as well as speed and endurance. It is a brilliant way to prepare for the Winter Sport season!

Sports Report The First XI Cricket team faced Yarra Valley last week. After losing the toss, Camberwell were sent in to bowl and Yarra Valley got on top early as they built a steady first wicket partnership. However, a breakthrough wicket came from the ever reliable Vihaan Narayana (Year 12), who ended the day with figures of 2/27.

This allowed Camberwell to regain control of the game as wickets fell at regular intervals, with Yarra Valley eventually bowled out for 145. Camberwell started their innings in quick fashion, however a top order collapse meant they had to dig deep to get the win they so desperately wanted. Controlled contributions from Vihaan Narayana, Charlie Harper and Matt Lewison eventually allowed Camberwell to pass the target with 12 overs to go.

The 2nd XI finally had a reward for their hard efforts so far this season with a triumphant win against Yarra Valley.

Camberwell took advantage of the small KAO boundaries, with brilliant power hitting from Marc Dalla Riva and James Harker, who scored 44 and 62 respectively. After a handy cameo from Gareth Cox, Camberwell posted 228 to finish. With a strong foundation set, the team’s hard work at training paid off, as consistent bowling from Michael Dimatos and Sam Lord meant wickets fell regularly and Yarra struggled to score. A complete team effort saw Yarra bowled out for 172 and Camberwell come away with a convincing win.

The cycling squad had their first meet for 2019 on the weekend in an inter-school tournament at Sandown.

The senior team consisting of Zac Kelly, Jonathan Seeley, James Stambe and Kevin Chan set a dominating pace of 41 km/h in the 19 km race. Unfortunately for the team, they just missed out on a podium finish, finishing 5th out of a pool of 23 teams. The Junior team of Marcus Liew, Ned Chesler and new Year 7s Timothy Liew and Jason Li also rode strongly setting a steady pace of 30 km/h in their 14 km race, finishing in 9th place at the end of the day.

The 3rd Gold Basketball team had a convincing win against Yarra Valley to continue their dominant run of form. A tight first half meant the boys had to work hard to develop their structures in order to finish victorious. Commanding second half performances from Harry Laukens and Oscar Cirulis saw Camberwell greatly improve their offensive abilities and ultimately run away with a comfortable 19 point win.

Up against a tough Yarra Valley squad, the 9A basketball team knew they would have to fight hard in order to come away with a win. The game was initially tight, with both sides not willing to let the game get out of their grasp. The second half saw the team improve their ball handling and defensive pressure, allowing Camberwell to edge in front coming into the final minutes. Strong performances from Benny Grayson and Sam Veitch ensured a Camberwell victory, with the team winning 28 points to 20.

Monash University Inside Monash Seminars Get the inside story of what it’s really like to study at Monash at an Inside Monash seminar, where a current student, past student and an academic will talk about course structures, double degree options and pathways. It’s the best 90 minutes you could spend researching a course. Lectures begin at 6.30pm and conclude at 8.00pm. The lecture series begins this year on 27 March with Business at the Caulfield campus.
