From the Headmaster

Thank you to all families and students who attended the services in memory of Mr Mark Williams last Friday and Tuesday. Mr Williams had a big impact on so many people, and it was great to be able to pay our respects and to offer our support to his family. It was touching to see so many past students return – he clearly had touched their lives and it was lovely to hear their stories and anecdotes about their times with this special teacher.

Parent Education Seminar Our next Parent Education seminar will be held on Wednesday 14 August, when Professor Michael Gordon will speak on the subject Building Resilient Teenagers. Dr Gordon is a past parent of our School and is considered a leading expert on adolescent mental health issues. More details can be found in the flyer attached to this Bulletin. Please let Mr John Allen know if you are intending to come at mja@cgs.vic.edu.au.

Blokes’ Book Breakfast We look forward to welcoming boys and their fathers to our Blokes’ Book Breakfast on Wednesday 21 August from 7.00am to 8.30am. The Breakfast is an annual event for Middle and Senior School and offers fathers the opportunity to spend some time with their sons sharing a mutual love for books and reading. Each year our speakers share their own journey as a reader and writer and their individual approach to writing. They inspire us to read, to write and to tell our own stories. Our guest this year is Mr Michael Gerard Bauer, an internationally acclaimed author whose writing has received a number of awards both in Australia and overseas. Further information including booking details is in the attached flyer. For any enquiries email: circulation@cgs.vic.edu.au. To book tickets please go to: www.trybooking.com/BECVD

Brain Bee Competition The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition for high school students in Year 10 to learn about the brain and its functions, learn about neuroscience research, find out about careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses. After a rigorous individual round, 30 teams were invited to participate in the State Final at the Florey Centre, University of Melbourne. Camberwell made it through to the final with three other teams and did particularly well in a tight contest to once again win by half a point from MLC. This is the second year in a row that Camberwell Grammar has been awarded first place and the team was presented with another brain model and individual prizes. I invited Year 10 students Nick Robinson, Aidan Harris, James Stambe and Isaac Hui to the stage to receive their trophy. Paul Hicks, Headmaster

Middle School School Tours Many thanks to the boys who showed prospective CGS families around the School on Tuesday. Learning about the School through the boys’ eyes is a great way to engage with the School and a great opportunity for our boys to challenge themselves. This is one of many great legacies established by Mr Peter O’Connell and Ms Tracey Hayes in the Admissions Office. Projec10 On Wednesday Year 8 boys hosted Fintona and Camberwell Girls Grammar School for the final planning session ahead of the 2019 Projec10 Entrepreneurship Program. This is an exceptionally creative cohort, who have proposed ideas from lemonade stands to a Dunk’a’Teacher Tank. CGS will be hosting a Fete at lunch on Friday 13 September, where many groups will be selling their products in a bid to raise funds for Opportunity International.

Year 6 Round Robin Page 1

Congratulations to our Year 6 Boys who represented the School at the Inter-School Round Robin at PEGS on Tuesday. The boys put in a huge effort in several sports, including AFL, soccer, handball and tennis.
