From the Acting Headmaster OCGA 50 Year Lunch Last Sunday I attended the Old Camberwell Grammarians’ lunch in the Camberwell Room for past students who graduated at least 50 years ago. Over 140 people were in attendance, and it was wonderful to meet so many of our most senior community members once more, and to share their memorable times at school, and their lives since. The afternoon demonstrated clearly that friendships made at school can continue throughout all our lives. It was a pleasure to welcome the graduating class of 1969 into the 50 year club.

I am grateful to the OCGA and Mr Ryan Whitehead and his Development Office team for their work in preparing this wonderful lunch. I am also looking forward to joining our (2009) Old Boys at tonight’s 10 Year Reunion.

Mother’s Day This morning I had the pleasure in joining our Junior School staff and students to celebrate Mother’s Day with the mums from Pre-Prep to Year 5. The boys were very excited to be able to share a breakfast and a warm drink with their mum before school. Many thanks to our Friends of Norge for their wonderful organisation and hard work to set up such a special and enjoyable morning.

May I wish all the mothers of our community the warmest of greetings and well wishes and hope your Mother’s Day this coming Sunday is a very enjoyable day.

NAPLAN Next week our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be sitting compulsory annual NAPLAN tests in reading writing conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. NAPLAN tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests, and are just one aspect of our School’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace ongoing assessments made by our teachers about your son’s performance. Mid-Year Concert – Thursday 30 May, 7.30pm Our Music School is busily finalising their preparations for the Mid-Year Concert, to be held on Thursday 30 May in the Performing Arts Centre. As always, the evening promises to be a most entertaining one. Over 400 of our students in Junior, Middle and Senior School will be performing on the evening. Duke of Edinburgh Presentation The Duke of Edinburgh Awards are about individual choices and setting goals to improve oneself with the support and guidance of people skilled in those areas. The components and areas that can be chosen are physical recreation, skill, service and adventurous activity; with satisfactory completion being awarded to candidates having displayed commitment and improvement in each activity.

Chess Australia Regional Final Two Camberwell Grammar chess teams participated in a Chess Australia Regional Final last Monday at Marcellin College. Over 30 teams participated, with our teams coming second and sixth. Congratulations to Oliver Papillo (Year 12), Ken Weeraratne (Year 10), Eugene Goh (Year 9), Kayson Wang (Year 9) and Cedric Fun (Year 9) for being awarded the Silver medal and further congratulations to Kayson Wang for being named second best chess player on the day. Both teams have now qualified for the State Final later in the year. Anyone interested in joining the School chess squad and competing in future competitions should see either Mr Paul Double or Oliver Papillo for more information.

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition

OCGA 50 Year Lunch

At the end of Term 1, all Middle School students participated in the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition. This is the third year that CGS has participated in this competition and the problems test students’ ability to follow rules, use logic, and to identify and apply algorithms, which can identify computer programming potential. The results have now been returned and there were several outstanding performances. Eight Middle School students achieved High Distinctions, meaning they were among the highest achievers in Australia for their year level: Year 6: Tomas O’Brien, Nicholas Wang, Kye Yoshimura Year 7: Tony Zhang Year 8: Marcus Lim, Lachlan Nguyen, Isaac Tan, Thomas Yang There were also many students who achieved Distinctions and Credits and these certificates will be handed out in Maths classes. Well done to all students for their efforts.

Next Thursday Year 7 will take part in the inaugural BODi Day (By Our Deeds Inquiry). The boys will learn about balancing their lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and relaxation. The day will also include Boot Camp, Spin, Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi.

Chess Competition Congratulations to Minh Tran (Year 7) for his part in our second place (out of 30 teams) in the Marcellin College Chess Competition. Minh was the only representative from the Middle School. The team now qualifies for the State School Championships.

Violin Performance Well done to Richard Liu (Year 8) who performed a beautiful violin piece at the Middle School Assembly last Monday. The piece was entitled ‘Polish Caprice’ by Grazyna Bacewicz.

Winter Sport Well done to all boys who represented the School last weekend. A special mention to the Intermediate 7/8 Hockey Team, which managed to restrict their opposition to three goals despite having half as many players as the opposition, due to illness. It was a very courageous effort that displayed exceptional grit and teamwork for such an early stage of the season.

William Angliss Dinner A reminder about the William Angliss Dinner on Thursday 16 May. This night is provided especially for parents of Middle School boys and is always a great occasion. The guest speaker will be Mr Steven Dupon, Founding Director of the Institute of Games, an organisation that helps families manage video games in the home. Junior School NAPLAN Testing Week Year 3 and 5 boys will be undertaking the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) on 14 to 17 May. Each phase of the Assessment will be conducted at the beginning of the day or in the block between recess and lunch. To assist in preparing the boys for their day we would like to ask that they get a reasonable night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast.

Preparation for NAPLAN has been ongoing and the boys are familiar with the format of the testing and the writing genre that is being assessed this year. However, if you have any concerns about your son’s readiness, the assessment or any aspect of the week please contact the class teacher.

The Winter season is underway and it was fantastic to see our students participating in the wide range of sports and activities we offer. Well done to Julian Lim (Year 7) who won the first round of School’s League Fencing at the State Fencing Centre in North Melbourne last Sunday. He won the Junior Men’s Division, defeating opponents from Years 7, 8 and 9. This follows his outstanding performance in New Zealand recently where he won the U15 Oceania Championship for Fencing.

Best wishes to Lewis Clarke, Cody Greenwood, Gregory Kerdemelidis and Yanning Zhang (all Year 9) who are representing the School and the AGSV at Swimming Victoria’s Victorian School Associations Competition on Monday 13 May at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The Sport Department likes to recognise the sporting achievements of our students. Please let us know if your son accomplishes such things as gaining selection in a state or national representative team or performs well in representative events.

SPORT REPORT The First XI soccer team hosted their first home game of the season with an encounter against Mentone.

Forwards Lachlan Waycott (Year 11) and Chris Han (Year 12) were able to get behind Mentone’s defence thanks to great through balls by Jasper Guthrie (Year 12); however, neither were able to get reward for their efforts on the scoreboard. Two unfortunate goals around half-time put Camberwell on the back foot with less than a half to play. Much to the team’s credit the boys were able to stick to their game plan and slowly work their way back, eventually scoring with only eight minutes to go. Minutes later, a lethal left-foot goal by Tristan Patsiotis (Year 12) meant the team finally equalised, the game finishing 2-2.

The 10A hockey team kicked started their season with a tight win against PEGS. From the start of the match, it was obvious both teams were evenly matched, and scoring would not be easy to come by. PEGS scored first; however, Camberwell were able to quickly respond thanks to great ball movement across the wings and positioning by Christian Rogan (Year 10), who tapped the ball in. A superb couple of goals by Nicholas Robinson (Year 10) saw Camberwell take a 3-1 lead heading into half-time. The second half was not as successful as the first, but great defensive efforts from the team meant Camberwell came away with a victory.

Round 2 of the AGSV Cross Country season was hosted by Mentone at the Braeside park course. Camberwell consolidated their strong showing at the first race with another impressive performance, leading to an overall third place for the day. The senior boys were once again led home by Tom Bowers (Year 11), who was the third runner home and is now leader of the entire Year 11 competition. He received strong support from Patrick Canny (Year 11) and Jack Amling (Year 12) who solidified Camberwell’s third place finish. The intermediates were boosted by the return of Lachlan Wei (Year 9) and along with strong running from Colby Gale (Year 9), John Williams (Year 10) and Jimmy Smith (Year 10), the team finished a close fourth.

The juniors were led by impressive performances from Harrison Car (Year 7), Jack Dobbyn (Year 8) and Daniel Chen (Year 7), as well as Kadell and Orlando Kuti (both Year 7) who finally received reward for their hard work at training. Strong efforts from the team overall saw the Juniors also finish in third position. This now places Camberwell in third on the AGSV premiership table, the highest ranking the team has enjoyed in many years.

The Inter-C Gold soccer team finished with a tight one-all draw in a close contest with Trinity. A lucky bounce gifted Trinity the first goal of the game; however, Camberwell continued to persist as they looked for an equaliser. On the back of intense defensive pressure, Jake Lawrence (Year 10) was able to make a brilliant run and guide the ball past the Trinity keeper. Camberwell finished the game with some missed opportunities; however, with plenty of encouraging signs, the team looks confident for this week’s game.

The First XI hockey team competed in the last leg of the Mitre Cup against Trinity. With the overall scores standing at one-all, the team needed a win to bring the Mitre Cup home. Despite pre-season injuries to two of its starters, Camberwell battled it out at both ends of the field with great run and effort from co-captains Nick Gooden and Charlie Harper (both Year 12). In goals, the ever reliable Brodie Carswell (Year 9) also stopped anything that came his way. Despite the team’s best defensive efforts, Trinity’s transition attack was too good as they scored just before half time. The second half was more open with opportunities at goal a more common occurrence and Nick Gooden was able to capitalise, leveling the score at one all. Sean Barry (Year 12) continued to cause headaches up forward; however, a goal in the dying minutes of the game saw Trinity win narrowly 2-1.

The 7A football team started their Winter Sport careers at Camberwell with a convincing 42 point win over Mentone. The first quarter was an even affair with both teams failing to record a goal despite plenty of opportunities. The second quarter started in a similar fashion until Ben Ford (Year 7) intercepted the ball across half forward and comfortably kicked the ball through for a goal. This broke the deadlock, with goals becoming a regular occurrence on the back of great run and carry from Sam Grlj (Year 6), Will Richardson (Year 7) and Lachie McGowan (Year 7). The boys maintained their efforts for the entirety of the match, with the final scores ended up Camberwell 7.10 - 52 to Mentone 1.4 - 10.

Christmas Pudding Preparation Has Begun!

2019 marks the 35th year that the GGS Auxiliary has overseen the making, selling and donating of traditional Christmas Puddings. While the puddings are delicious, the CGS crested bowls ubiquitous, and the funds raised have enhanced the School environment, the best thing about the puddings is the fun we have in making them! Come along and share in the camaraderie as we chop, soak, zest, pour, measure and mix our way to making more than 700 puddings.
