The wellness category has seen staggering growth in Camberwell in recent years. Health food cafes, fitness studios, organic food stores, activewear shops and health services are increasingly opening in the shopping precinct, making it the fastest growing retail and business category. Currently, there are more than 100 wellness businesses in the Camberwell shopping precinct, and more than a quarter of those businesses have opened in the past two years. Camberwell Centre Association manager Kerry Daly said several recent retail vacancies in the precinct were taken up by health and wellness businesses. “Many of these businesses are taking prime retail positions within the precinct, with Bupa Dental and Life Ready Physio + Pilates two examples of recent additions to central Burke Rd,” she said. There has been a significant increase in gyms and personal training studios in the area, with Anytime Fitness, Pumpt Gym, Listen To Your Body and Strength Lab all opening in the past year. Unique health services have gained popularity, with Jessica Dewar Yoga offering Melbourne’s first donation-based classes, and Elevation Floatation offering sensory-deprived float sessions. Camberwell has also seen the emergence of holistic health and wellness practices. Life Ready Physio + Pilates offers end-toend injury treatment, meaning clients can access physiotherapy, dry needling, clinical pilates and rehabilitation programs all under the one roof. Euphoria Cafe and Wellness Centre offers pilates, massage, myotherapy, nutrition services, a health food cafe and educational seminars from the same location. Ms Daly said the shift towards health and wellness mirrors the change in demographic of the area, with more young couples and families moving to Camberwell in recent years. “It has cemented Camberwell as a leading destination for health and wellness,” she said. But the trend is not just happening in Camberwell. Across the nation, there has been phenomenal growth across the health and wellness industry and it doesn’t look like the movement will stop anytime soon. Nielsen’s 2016 Global Health and Ingredient Sentiment Survey shows that an increased focus on health and wellness, a rise in self-care, treatment and prevention, and

an increasingly educated consumer are all driving factors for a booming health and wellness sector. The 2015 Australian Wellness Index showed that the country’s health continues to improve, as Australians are smoking and drinking less, eating better and being more active.

B I G, B O L D, B R AV E Makeup enthusiasts are already decking out their autumn/winter 2018 toolkits with essentials, which features an array of shadows, liners and lashes.

01 EXAGGERATED LASHES

02 BARE FACE BEAUTY

03 BOLD, DRAMATIC EYES

Lashes are going to be long, thick and dizzyingly dramatic. This season eyelids are getting a weightlifting workout, with lashes so exaggerated they would make 60s icon Twiggy gasp. Dedicated beauty trend followers will be reaching for falsies; others with a true commitment to fashion will be doubling their eyelash extensions; but those who just want to turn up the dial will reach for the heavyduty mascara. For thicker and fuller lashes try a volume-boosting mascara. Find a fat, curved brush to create the look — it’ll grab the lashes and coat them as you apply the mascara but won’t clump or leave them looking flaky. Tip: Apply mascara from root to tip. Several layers will be required and they will need to dry between applications.

The great news for those who never really mastered the highlight-lowlightnow-blend technique is that contouring is out. Beauty news says that it’s all about fresh, clean skin. Yes, it’s time to master the ‘no makeup’ makeup look. First of all, ditch the powder (think moist, supple skin) and fake tan (no one’s falling for it). Opt instead for a light foundation that’s right for your tone, or tinted moisturiser, and add just a hint of pearly blush to the cheeks. Tip: The clean, healthy skin look is best achieved by skin that is actually clean and healthy. Keep up your cleansing, exfoliation and moisturising routine, and remember to stay hydrated during the cooler months, as central heating can really zap that dewy glow.

In Paris, the Balmain, Chloe and Chanel shows all featured models with such dramatically stunning eye makeup, it immediately became the must-do beauty trend for the season. There’s a reason skin is being kept clean and clear: we’re concentrating on the eyes. Not since the 80s has the cut crease been so big. The cut crease is a technique where eyeshadow (or liner) is applied just above the crease of the eyelid, to create the illusion of bigger eyes. The look can be bold and dramatic when smoky, darker shades are used or subtle when softer shades are used. Tip: Choose rich, smoky tones with a touch of silver for the base colour, and dark charcoal or chocolate for the cut.

DOUBLE DOWN Double denim has returned and although it can be a controversial trend, we believe twice as much denim is twice as good.

With the cooler weather approaching, it’s time to dust off your denim and double up. Celebrities including Diane Kruger, Katie Holmes and Gigi Hadid have been seen sporting double denim, so we could certainly learn a thing or two about how to style this trend. The key to pulling off double denim? Wear it well. Here are some dos and don’ts when it comes to rocking the double denim trend this autumn/winter. TRY COLOUR If you’re skeptical about embracing the double denim look, try mixing up the colours of your denim and you can’t go wrong. Start with the basics – opt for classic black jeans and pair them with a blue denim jacket. Or mix up the shades of blue in your denim selection. A pale wash pair of jeans with a dark indigo chambray shirt looks classic and keeps the double denim trend effortless and chic. If you truly love colour, go to town with mixing and matching your denim shades. Try red denim jeans with a white denim jacket, or a pink denim skirt with a pale blue chambray shirt. AVOID DENIM ACCESSORIES While double denim has made a comeback, denim accessorising has not. Yes, you can have too much denim. Avoid denim hats, shoes, belts, bags, or any other type of denim accessory. Stick to denim clothing when rocking the double denim trend. MIX UP WASH AND WEAR Mix up the textures and shades of your denim by combining different washes or wears, otherwise you’ll look too matchymatchy. Distressed is the best way to team denim with denim. But here’s a tip – only pair one piece of distressed denim with another at a time. Try ripped jeans with an intact denim jacket, for instance. Or a dark blue or black denim jean looks great paired with a worn or distressed denim jacket in a lighter shade.

DRESS IT UP Because denim originated as 1950s American workwear, you can up-level your style and make the denim look more luxe. Add a touch of glam to make your denim more sophisticated – pair your skinny jeans and denim jacket with statement heels or jewellery. Mix up your style by teaming a lace or silk shirt with your double denim look. For men, a crisp white shirt looks particularly great with denim jeans and a denim jacket. It’s also a great trick to break up that head-to-toe denim look.

REDEVELOPMENT OF THE WELL

CAMBERWELL CATCH-UP There has been plenty of activity taking place in Camberwell in recent months and lots in store for the coming weeks.

The Well shopping centre will undergo major renovations this year to improve the standard of the centre, upgrade existing shops and introduce new traders. The upgrades follow recent improvements to the centre’s toilet facilities which includes rebuilt amenities and a five-star parent’s room. New cafe Rex Espresso has opened in the centre and bookshop Dymocks recently relocated, with a refreshed store fit-out. Works, which are currently underway, will mostly take place at night to ensure minimal disruption to shoppers and allow retailers to trade as usual. Works will begin on the ground floor level to rejuvenate the centre’s fresh food offering, before advancing to redevelopment of the upper levels. The centre’s facade will also get a facelift, and scaffolding will be erected to complete this part of the upgrade. Hoarding with signage will communicate details about the works, so please look out for these to get regular updates.

IN CAMBERWELL

CAMBERWELL CENTRAL Redevelopment of Camberwell Central, on the eastern side of Burke Rd, has been taking place over the past year, with new stores Aldi and Officeworks joining the existing Woolworths and Target. The upgrade includes improved access to the upper level and an extra lift. The improvements have beautified the area and compliment recent upgrades at the Camberwell Fresh Food Market. BURKE AVENUE CARPARK Last year, the Burke Avenue carpark was upgraded to make the area safer and more accessible for drivers and pedestrians. Boroondara Council identified the carpark did not cater to high pedestrian use and lacked public space, and suggested adjustments to improve safety and access for both vehicle users and pedestrians. Works included reconfiguring the carpark to allow more efficient use of space, installing two shaded seating areas, improving pedestrian connections (including zebra crossings), retaining mature trees and planting new trees, and improving lighting, seating, landscaping and bicycle parking. The carpark now looks nicer and allows for easier access and parking.
