WELCOME In this year of 2020, the mission of Camarada to provide oasis, connection and culture became even more critical. The pandemic has forced the entire world to rethink our modes of being.

We began with our “video-a-day” back in March, sharing over 100 videos with our audiences through daily emails, staying in touch and connecting with our community in order to uplift and inspire each other.

The overwhelming response and appreciation for these daily videos fueled our motivation.

We chose to keep creating and connecting – doing something, anything, but stopping. We spent the summer watching and learning from the ar ts community around the world. Through focused observation and space, we designed our dynamic programming for the 20-21 UNSTOPPABLE Season.

We are thrilled to unveil our vision and dreams for this exciting adventure! From commissioning new art to keeping our artists employed when they could not perform to enlisting the expertise of our veteran audio and video engineer, Daniel Rumley, in order to offer you the best LiveStream production possible. We look forward to welcoming you to our oasis of connection and culture.

Artist Directors Beth Ross Buckley, flute, is the Executive Director of Camarada. Ms. Ross-Buckley is an advocate of chamber music and has produced groundbreaking chamber music events throughout San Diego combining great music, cuisine and art.

An original founder of Camarada, for 25 years Beth has been the driving force behind this ensemble and has added many new venues, compositions and musicians to its celebrated history. Ms. Ross-Buckley received her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from St. Olaf College and her Masters of Music from the University of Minnesota. Her teachers include Kay Sahlin, Julia Bogorad, Elaine Eagle, Damian Bursill-Hall, Frances Blaisdell and Timothy Day. Ms. Ross-Buckley has been a featured artist at the National Flute Association Convention and Music Teacher’s Association of California. Beth was Principal flute of the former San Diego Chamber Orchestra/ Orchestra Nova for 25 years and performed with many Musical Theatre productions in Southern California. Ms. RossBuckley also has a portrait photography business, Beth Ross Buckley Photography.

Dana Burnett, piano, has been Co-Artistic Director of Camarada for over a decade. She has been on the faculties of the University of North Carolina, University of Wisconsin and Vanderbilt University. Ms. Burnett was awarded the Alban Berg Fellowship at the Schubert Institute-Austria, and received an Artist Diploma and accompanying prize from that institution. A soloist and chamber musician, Ms. Burnett has performed at Carnegie Hall; the Frick Collection, Pittsburgh, Dame Myra Hess Series, Chicago; Academy of Music, Philadelphia and the Kennedy Center, Washington D. C. Dana has premiered many chamber works including those by JeanMichel Damase, Richard Wernick, Judith Zaimont, Gunther Shuller and the last chamber work of Stephen Albert. She has recorded for the Naxos and Arabesque labels and been featured on WHYY, Philadelphia “Fresh Air” and NPR. Ms. Burnett is currently a member of the MTAC state convention collaborative staff and music faculty at Cal State San Marcos.

Guest Artists Matthew Armstrong, percussion, began teaching at San Marcos High School in 2004 and in 2015 became the Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator for the San Marcos Unified School District. Named San Marcos High School Teacher of the Year and San Marcos Unified Teacher of the year in 2013, and Music Educator of the Year for the California Music Educators Association in 2015, he is a highly soughtafter performer, clinician, arranger and arts advocate. As a performer, he regularly performs in San Diego Symphony chamber ensembles, and has held the position of principal percussionist with the California Chamber Orchestra, and works throughout San Diego in jazz and Dixie ensembles.

Mr. Armstrong is a member of Percussive Arts Society, and the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association, California Music Educators Association and the National Association for Music Education. Mr. Armstrong teaches and performs as an Innovative Percussion Artist.

Mary Weil Barranger, harpsichord and piano, grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she was a winner of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Youth Auditions. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan School of Music and in her senior year was selected to be in the Mortar Board Society. Her Master’s Degree was in Piano Performance from San Diego State University. Her musical mentors have been George Trovillo, Marion Owen, and Karen Follingstad.

Mary was the pianist for the San Diego Symphony from 19752017 and former principal pianist for the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. She has appeared as soloist with the San Diego Symphony, the San Diego Pops Orchestra, and the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra. She is a founding member of Camarada and has collaborated frequently in concerts and recordings with Zina Schiff, violinist. Their Naxos recording of the music of Cecil Burleigh was voted Critic’s Choice Best of 2002 in American Record Guide. Recently, Mary has presented solo harpsichord recitals at the Athenaeum, the Lyceum, and the San Diego Museum of Art. In addition to her Flemish double harpsichord she is the proud owner of a rare early keyboard instrument called a clavicytherium.

Fred Benedetti, guitar, is a full-time professor of music at Grossmont College where he is chair of guitar studies, and is a member of the guitar faculty at San Diego State University.

Mr. Benedetti has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Germany, Czech Republic, Japan, and Taiwan. In 1986 Mr. Benedetti was one of twelve performers chosen worldwide to perform in the prestigious Andrés

Segovia Master class. As a BMI-affiliated composer, he has written numerous contemporary pieces for the international CD library company Network Productions. As a studio musician and composer for 35 years his music and performing is featured on over 150 digital and vinyl recordings and numerous radio, television and feature films.

Gunnar Biggs, double bass, has been a prominent figure in the Southern California music scene for over fortyfive years. TV appearances include KPBS’ Club Date and the Emmy-award winning documentary, “Three Generations of the Blues.” A former professor retired from SDSU, Palomar College, Cal State San Marcos & Mira Costa College- he now focuses on private instruction. He was a scholarship student at North Texas State University but left his studies early to take a position with the San Diego Symphony at age 19. At 20 he went on tour with Buddy Rich. He has performed with several legendary musical icons; Thad Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Sheila Jordan, Kenny Barron, Shelley Manne, Jack Sheldon, Don Menza, Charles McPherson, Charlie Byrd, and Peter Sprague. Gunnar is active in the recording studio and in the classical world as well. He has performed with the San Diego Opera, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Nova and Orquesta de Baja California Sacha Boutros, voice, is a producer, composer and celebrated jazz singer. Singing jazz in 14 languages, Sacha performs music as a global peace tool to create community and goodwill between bordering nations. Ealy in her career, Sacha founded a record label and publishing company to produce jazz records as one of the few female producers in the industry. Her production company provides curated programs in all genres to Fortune 500 companies for events and festivals. Grammy-nominated and considered one of the top jazz artists in the world, Sacha has toured internationally for over two decades. She also founded Sacha’s Supper Club, a vintage pop-up club in southern California offering food, music and dancing, much like the cafe societies in 1940’s New York. Partnering with five-star hotels and historic venues, the club won several awards for its originality and vintage nightlife. Sacha lives between San Diego and Paris. She enjoys fundraising for multiple non-profit organizations and helping out with community service work in the Baja-California orphanages. Sacha also enjoys mentoring young jazz artists and volunteering at the American Cathedral in Paris.

David Buckley, violin, is an experienced chamber musician, soloist and orchestral player. He is currently CoConcertmaster of the La Jolla Symphony and was their featured soloist in 2018 performing Florence Price’s Violin concerto no. 2. David has been featured in all 25 Camarada seasons and has special expertise in the flute and violin repertoire and Piazzolla. In addition, Dr. Buckley is president of Radiology Medical Group and has served as chief of radiology at Scripps Mercy Hospital. Dr. Buckley is a summa cum laude graduate of St. Olaf College and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. His MD is from the University of Minnesota where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. Dr. Buckley he has been honored twice as a top doctor by the members of the San Diego County Medical Society and enjoys travel, golf and relaxing by the lake in his home state of Minnesota.

Giovanna Clayton, cello, holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from UCLA in music performance and was a featured artist with her quartet in the prestigious Royce Hall music series. Since graduating, Giovanna has had the opportunity to work with world-renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Pinchas Zukerman, Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, János Starker and Sir Neville Marriner, among others. Upon her return from an eight-month fellowship with the Chicago Symphony, Giovanna won positions with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (2004), Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the New West and Santa Barbara symphonies. Giovanna is a familiar face in the Hollywood music scene, performing live and recording with artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, James Brown, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder and more. Keeping a busy recording schedule, Giovanna has played on dozens of jingles, movie trailers and blockbusters, such as X-Men (2000), Spider-man (2002), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), The Pursuit of Happyness (2006), Rocky Balboa (2006), Horton Hears a Who! (2008), The Tale of Despereaux (2008), Mall Cop (2009) and many more. Her television credits include American Idol; Felicity; The Tonight Show; the AMA, Billboard, Grammy, Soul Train, Lady of Soul and Academy awards; a GMC truck commercial and a voice over for Lifetime’s Television for Women. A versatile artist, Giovanna has scored a short film, is finishing up her first instrumental album and is in production on her debut artist project.

Bridget Dolkas, violin, is the principal second violin of the Pacific Symphony, and also loves to rock out in the jazz-classical fusion band, the Peter Sprague Consort, an intriguing ensemble combining string quartet and jazz trio. She has performed as soloist with the Pacific Symphony and the Poway Symphony and has been a featured performer at the International VillaLobos Festival since 2015. Just before the 2016 Olympics, she performed at the Rio International Chamber Music Week festival. As a chamber musician, she performs regularly on Pacific Symphony’s chamber music series, Café Ludwig. For the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”, she cowrote and directed the “frighteningly funny” mash-up music video, “Frite of Spring” (check it out!). As first violinist and founding member of the California Quartet, she co-founded the critically acclaimed Connections Chamber Music Series. Ms. Dolkas performed for eight years in the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Opera Orchestra.

Danny Green, piano, has earned recognition as a jazz pianist, recording artist, bandleader and composer. Green’s talents have taken him from the Blue Note in New York City to the Blue Whale in Los Angeles. Green’s 2009 album, With You In Mind, won “Best Jazz Album” at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards and his A Thousand Ways Home was one of KSDS Jazz 88.3’s “Top Ten Jazz Releases of 2012.” The Danny Green Trio that includes bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer Julien Cantelm released After The Calm, featuring ten of Green’s compositions, winning “Best Jazz Album” at the 2015 San Diego Music Awards. The Danny Green Trio Plus Strings, featuring the trio with a string quartet led by violinist Antoine Silverman, released two Jazz Week Top 50 chart hits – the 2016 Altered Narratives and 2018 One Day It Will.

The group has performed at New York City’s Shapeshifter Lab, Huntington Summer Arts Festival (NY), TEDxSan Diego at Copley Symphony Hall, KSDS Jazz 88.3’s Jazz Live, Portola Vineyards Summer Jazz Series, An Die Musik Live! (Baltimore), Rockwood Music Hall (NYC), and the Western Arts Alliance Juried Showcase in 2017. Green is a faculty member of the annual Jazz 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop, adjunct faculty at Grossmont Community College, and he presents a jazz appreciation workshop at elementary schools as part of the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library’s outreach program. Green directed the jazz ensemble at Coronado School of the Arts from 2014-2017, and was an artist in residence at Canyon Crest Academy and at CSU Summer Arts Monterey.

Rebecca Jade, voice, is an accomplished singer/ songwriter, performing with some of the most sought-after musicians all over the world. She has been touring with Sheila E. since 2017 and most recently appeared in the Emmynominated show, “Let’s Go Crazy: The GRAMMY Salute to Prince.” She sang background vocals for Sir Elton John at the 2020 Academy Awards; opened for Will Downing and Boney James, as well as for Jeffrey Osborne. Rebecca has been a guest artist on the Dave Koz Cruises, Spaghettini in Seal Beach, and at Anthology for 5 ½ years. She was the official singer of the San Diego Gulls hockey team anthem in 2015 and 2016. Rebecca’s projects include sessions with Kiko Cibrián (Luis Miguel) and performing on the DW3 #1 UK Soul Charts 2020 album and Aubrey Logan’s Where the Sunshine is Expensive, #1 Billboard Charts 2019 album.

She released The Jade Element, receiving San Diego Music Awards in 2014, 2015 and 2017, a “Best of San Diego” Award in 2016, and the opportunity to perform with El Debarge.

Rebecca released an album of Cole Porter classics, Planet Cole Porter, with Peter Sprague, earning them a 2018 “Best Jazz Album” San Diego Music Award. Rebecca Jade & the Cold Fact recently released Running out of Time. Rebecca is currently co-producing her first solo project with Carnell Harrell (Jacksons, J-Lo, Dave Koz), set for 2020 release, and earned the “Artist of the Year” award for this year’s SDMAs. Travis Maril, viola, is String Coordinator at SDSU’s School of Music and Dance and Co-Director of SDSU’s String Academy for pre-college students. A passionate chamber musician, he has been described as playing with “persuasive, stylish ardor” (San Diego Reader). His chamber music partners include principal players of the Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles and Rochester Philharmonics, the Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphonies and members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

An active recording artist, Travis has recorded contemporary works for the Naxos and New World Record labels and with the jazz pianist Danny Green’s trio. He has enjoyed a long relationship with the composer Joel P. West, and is featured on a number of his scores, including Netflix’s Chef’s Table and Warner Bros. upcoming feature film Just Mercy. Travis was a Trustee Scholar and Outstanding Graduate at the University of Southern California, and earned his Master’s Degree at Rice University.

Andres Martin, double bass, is a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and also an arranger, and composer. Andres has performed with orchestras, chamber ensembles and as a soloist in Argentina, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Denmark and the United States. Since his arrival in Tijuana, Mexico, Andres has been immersed in teaching as well as performing as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been a member of the “Orquesta de Baja California “since 2002. He also organizes

and directs “Contrabajos de Baja California A.C.”, a Double Bass academy celebrating an annual international Double Bass festival and chamber music course held in Tijuana. In addition to his work as a soloist and chamber musician, Andres is an accomplished composer, with work performed and commissioned by renowned soloists, chamber ensembles and orchestras around the world. In collaboration with Eastman Strings Company, he is designing a new Double Bass aimed to his specifications to serve as a modern Solo Instrument.

Duncan Moore, percussion, grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and began drum studies at the age of eight. He majored in music at the University of Iowa, studied with Tom Davis and played with local jazz groups until his move to San Diego in 1977. Over the last thirty years, he has performed and recorded with a number of national and local artists, including: Ray Brown, Kim Carnes, Dave Carpenter, Deanna Carter, Joe Chambers, Billy Childs, Jeff Clayton, Sara Evans, Holly Hofmann, Ricki Lee Jones, Kenny Loggins, James Moody, Peter Sprague, Steve Wilson, and Mike Wofford. Mr. Moore has a home recording studio where he records drum and percussion tracks for various projects. Duncan Moore teaches private percussion and is drum set instructor at Mira Costa College in Oceanside California, as well as California State University San Marcos.

Jeff Nevin, trumpet, is an award-winning classical composer whose works have been performed by the San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Symphony, California EAR Unit, Peninsula Symphony, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, and Sol de Mexico Symphony Orchestra. He is the founder and Artistic Director of Mariachi Champa–a Nevin, as well as principle trumpet for the La Jolla Symphony, and a frequent substitute with the San Diego Symphony. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in music theory and composition from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990. At Arizona State University he received his Master of Music degree in music theory and composition in 1992 and completed his Ph.D. at UC San Diego in 1998. Dr. Nevin is currently Professor of Music and Director of Mariachi Activities at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA, where he is developing a mariachi curriculum that is the first such program of its kind.

Andrea Overturf, English horn and oboe, holds the Dr. William and Evelyn Lamden English Horn Chair of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, a position she previously held with the Florida Orchestra. Ms. Overturf has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, National and Seattle Symphonies and in solo recitals throughout the U.S. and Asia.

She has been a guest soloist with the San Diego Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony and Aspen Music Festival. Her work includes La Jolla SummerFest, the Mainly Mozart Festival, the Tanglewood Music Center, National Repertory Orchestra and the Aspen Music Festival. Ms. Overturf has collaborated with artists such as James Conlon,

Lorin Maazel, John Harbison and James Levine, including the American stage premiere of Elliott Carter’s opera, What Next? Andrea Overturf is also the first oboist in the history of The Juilliard School to graduate from the prestigious solointensive Artist Diploma Program where she also received her Master’s Degree. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from the Eastman School of Music, graduating with the Performer’s Certificate, the highest performance distinction awarded to undergraduates. Her principal teachers include Elaine Douvas, Pedro Diaz, Nathan Hughes, Richard Killmer, Richard Woodhams and Rebecca Henderson.

Ryan Simmons, bassoon, received his Bachelor of Music in performance from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and began performing with the San Diego Symphony in 1998. In the 2001-2002 he played in the Los Angeles Philharmonic as associate principal bassoon, and then spent two seasons as principal bassoonist of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. In 2004 he won the national audition for the job of second bassoon in the San Diego Symphony and began playing as principal bassoon of Orchestra Nova San Diego. He has studied with of the legendary bassoon teachers Bernard Garfield, Steven Maxym and Norman Herzberg. Ryan has participated in many festivals including Marlboro, Tanglewood, the National Repertory Orchestra, Mainly Mozart and La Jolla SummerFest. He has also performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra Philarmonica de Tenerife and the Moscow Radio Orchestra. In addition to performing, Ryan Simmons is the owner of RS Woodwinds, a woodwind repair shop.

Peter Sprague, guitar, is a highly acclaimed musician and composer. With his thirty plus years as a professional guitarist, Peter has evolved into a musical powerhouse, having produced and played on over 190 recordings. He has published eleven songbooks of his own music. Peter conducts the majority of his endeavors in Southern California, staying close to his family, and where he is, without dispute, San Diego’s premier Jazz talent. He has won numerous awards for his artistry including Best Jazz Artist for San Diego. He has worked with some of the greats: Dianna Reeves, Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, David Benoit, and many others too numerous to count. Susan Wulff, double bass, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double Bachelor of Music in bass and vocal performance at CSU, Sacramento, completing her Master of Music at the University of Southern California. She has been Associate Principal Bassist with the San Diego Symphony since 2004 and had the privilege of working with many highly regarded orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Sun Valley Summer Symphony,

Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, La Jolla SummerFest, Mainly Mozart, Pacific Music Festival in Japan and the National Repertory Orchestra where she was a featured soloist and principal bassist. She has held positions with the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and New West Symphony and continues to perform regularly with the boundary-pushing San Diego based chamber ensembles; Art of Élan and Luscious Noise.

Ms. Wulff has gained international recognition for her innovative workshop that utilizes dance as a way to connect musicians with their inner groove.

Leyla Zamora, bassoon, has been a member of the San Diego Symphony since 2005. Ms. Zamora studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Baylor University and DePaul University in Chicago. Before coming to San Diego, Ms. Zamora was principal bassoon held for 11 years the position of with the Memphis Symphony. She has also performed with Atlanta and Saint Louis Symphonies, Seattle Symphony, Auckland Philharmonic in New Zealand, and the Costa Rican National Symphony. Ms. Zamora has participated in orchestral and chamber music festivals such as La Jolla Music Fest, Mainly Mozart, Cabrillo Festival, Britt and Cascade Festivals in Oregon, Ameropa in Prague, Apple Hill Chamber Music Center, International Orchestra in Japan, Spoleto Music Festival in Italy, and the Des Moines Metro Opera. Ms. Zamora has presented master classes and recitals at the Universities of Arizona, Idaho, Wichita State, Southern Mississippi, University of Memphis, Washburn University in Kansas, University of the Pacific in Stockton, and has performed solo concerti and recitals in Costa Rica, Colombia, Japan, Czech Republic, and the former Soviet Union.

Yao Zhou, cello, hailed in New York Concert Review as “a superb cellist with intense and sensuous sound,” performs with a rare and captivating dynamism as the tenured principal cello for San Diego Symphony, a faculty member at San Diego State University, and one of the cello principals of the Grand Teton Music Festivals. He is a founding member of the award-winning Great Wall String Quartet, and in 2013, he was honored as one of China’s Ten Extraordinary Cellists of the Generation. Mr. Zhao made his first concert appearance at age five, and solo debut in the Beijing Concert Hall at age nine. His career has seen him performing and teaching in over 40 cities around the world including a successful solo debut at the Weil Recital Hall (Carnegie Hall) in New York.

Mr. Zhao began his studies under the instruction of his father, Xuelian Zhao, who is a distinguished cellist. He attended the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Idyllwild Arts Academy, and the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, where he studied with renowned pedagogue, Professor Eleonore Schoenfeld.

Carolina Jaurena, tango dance, has been teaching and performing for over 20 years. The height of her professional career is her role as a primary dancer in the feature film Random Hearts, directed by Sidney Pollack. She has performed in “Eternal Tango” with Hector del Curto, the show “Tanguero”, “Tango! Soul and Heart” with the Choral Arts Society of Washington at Kennedy Center, and the off-Broadway Show, “Tango House”, produced by Juan Fabbri. Her international workshops and performances include Canarias Tango in Spain, 100 Años de Tango at the Solis Theater in Uruguay, and The Theaterhaus in Stuttgart, Alte Synagogue in Hechingen and Landesakademie in Ochsenhausen. She has performed and taught at many tango festivals including: Tango Norte Festival in Sweden, Yale Tango Fest, Tango Fest Houston and New Orleans Tango Festival. Carolina is sought after as a dancer and teacher and renowned for her precision of movement, professionalism and charisma.
