Mission Focused

The mission of Calvin Christian School, in cooperation with the home and church, is to teach the whole child from a biblical worldview, founded in the Reformation, providing children from Christian families with an excellent education for a life of Christ-centered service.

At Calvin Christian School, education is grounded in the liberal arts tradition and shaped by a commitment to the holistic development of each image bearer— in biblical terms - heart formation.

Our vision thus points to the image bearer’s identity in Christ -- such that the myriad ways we engage students is viewed as “inviting them to be formed by God’s Love in Christ.” What follows

is a correct ordering of loves, biblically ethical living, God-honoring thinking and the pursuit of wisdom. Everything flows from the Trinue God and his revelation, thus yielding four guiding questions: Whom to love? How to live? How to think? What to know?

Calvin Christian High School Test Scores • 2024 & 2025

Students that took AP Exams and received at least one score of 3 or higher

Covenant Community

Per our mission, Calvin is a covenant Christian school. We take partnership with Christian families seriously, evidenced by our thoughtful admissions process, faithfully generous community who give more than half of million dollars each year to make tuition more accessible, and our unique P.L.A.C.E. Services.

ADMISSIONS

At Calvin, we adhere closely to the idea that our school’s role is not to supplant the critical role of Christian parents. We believe admissions is all about bringing a whole family into partnership, not just children in a family who meet a desultory standard. Every prospective family is interviewed by a committee comprised of a teacher, administrator, member from the Board of Trustees and a member of the Admissions team.

LEGACY FUND

Our Annual Fall Drive is exclusively focused on raising funds to subsidize tuition for any Christian family who qualifies for up to a 50% tuition award, annually if needed. We call this “fund” our Legacy Fund, as it is a great reminder of God’s faithfulness to provide for Christian families who,

in many cases, make great sacrifices for their children attend Calvin. This fund is also a reminder that Calvin’s board has historically not built tuition assistance into the budget as a cost, keeping the price point at the best possible value for as many Christian families as possible.

PLACE Services

The acroynm stands for Planning Loving Advocacy for Christ- Centered Education. These services provided across the campus are briefly explained on the next page.

Calvin’s ‘‘Excellent’’ Curriculum

The curricular program at Calvin is far more than just what young image bearers do with pencil and paper, sitting at a desk or even in outdoor science learning lab.

Each morning starts with a corporate K-5 devotion called Square Time. Elementary students have a visual arts class, music and physical education twice a week, each taught by a teacher gifted in these areas, (providing the classroom teacher precious planning time).

Student life curriculum programming includes B.E.A.R. week (Be Excited About Reading) and Exploration Week (both with engaging cross-age activities). Near the end of the year is the beloved Mini-Olympics field day, where the upper school students plan and lead a zany, competitive set of “olympic” activities for the elementary students, with a gallery of parents in attendance.

The core curricular program within the classroom is robust, and the pedagogical teacher craft is always making it better. PLACE Services contributes meaningfully to both the on-going professional development of the teacher and also support services in the classroom to help each image bearer thrive. There are volumes that can be shared about the educational life of the classroom at CCS.

Another highlight to share is the Student Led Conference which takes place each spring. Each year parents are appreciative of seeing their children’s progress in their faith development, becoming “good people who speak well.”

Calvin Christian School provides an Early Childhood Education program and Kindergarten through 12th grade school located in northern San Diego county. Our campus stretches across 25 acres and boasts over 30 classrooms, a modern gymnasium, several large playing fields, a full library, computer lab, a weight-training room, spacious courtyards, and excellent music facilities.

The History of Calvin Christian School

1950’s - 1970’s

In the late 1950’s, members of Escondido’s Christian Reformed Church began planning for a Christian school for their children. In 1961, construction began, and the first meeting of the Mothers’ Club was held. On September 5, 1961, Calvin Christian School opened its doors to sixty-six students in grades first through eighth. By the end of that decade, the first kindergarten class was admitted.

1980’s

In 1980, after much prayer, planning, and fundraising, the doors of Calvin Christian High School opened to twenty seven students in grades nine and ten. It only took three years for CCHS to earn its WASC accreditation. Calvin Christian School continued to grow throughout the 1980’s and ended the decade with the opening of a state-ofthe-art gymnasium.

1990’s

In 1998, additional classrooms and office space were added to the high school which provided administrative offices. The elementary campus also received a new playground thanks to the fundraising of the Mothers’ Club.

2000’s

In 2003, Calvin Christian Preschool opened its doors with three teachers and thirty-two students. Fast forward more than 20 years, what was once called the Preschool, now called the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program, is at capacity with ten teachers and 80 children from two to five years old.

Present

In the early fall of 2017, Calvin completed the Heritage Center Chapel and Performing Arts space which seats over 500 people. The Board of Trustees are currently in the early phases of planning of building a brand-new building for ECE through 5th grade. Exciting times!

Co-Curricular Offerings & Activities

ARTS & ACTIVITIES

Calvin Christian’s Junior High program includes multiple band and choir performances, an annual Junior High game day, the biannual 7th and 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip, an overnight retreat, the Mini-Olympics, school spirit days, and a myriad of Clubs.

Calvin Christian High School has something for everyone. High School students also experience an off campus 3-day retreat to start the school year, Spiritual Emphasis Week, Interim Week, international trips, and student government.
