FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Alumni, Family, Parents, and Friends, of Cardinals.To this end, the Board of Trustees has begun the process of developing a new strategic plan for Calvert Hall. I thank all of you who have given input and responded to our surveys.The planning process is ongoing and a new plan should be revealed in the fall of 2017. We are committed to a plan that will challenge us to reach new heights. Our intent is not to stand still and bask in our current success and achievements, but to strive for excellence and to be the best at all we do.

One would think that these stories would be limited to the past, but that is not the case.We still have students who find creative ways to get to and from Calvert Hall. Multiple bus routes are not uncommon.Young men are coming from all over the region and many spend more than an hour travel time each way. If you came into the building at 7:00 a.m. you would find quite a few students already here dropped off by parents on their way to work (school starts at 8:25 a.m.). If you stop by the Noppinger Commons late in the afternoon you would find many students still here studying and waiting for rides home.

Fundamental to the plan is the commitment to making a Calvert Hall education accessible to a diverse population of young men.We need your support to do this. Please join in supporting or continuing to support Calvert Hall. John Baptist de La Salle told the first Brothers the most important thing they could do as educators was to “touch the hearts of their students.” Since 1845 this has been happening at Calvert Hall, continues today, and will continue into the future. Thank you for your support and all you do! Go Hall!

Someone new to The Hall, might ask the question, “Why? Why pass by other closer schools to only have an extensive commute time; arriving early in the morning or staying late at night?”

The answer is simple. Like graduates before them, our current students value the Brotherhood that is Calvert Hall and are willing to make the sacrifice to be part of this wonderful community.

Calvert Hall is a second home.There is a place for everyone here. A key component of any Lasallian school is a welcoming atmosphere, and we have that here.

T

his issue of The Cardinal features stories of the many ways students through the years have arrived at The Hall each day — to the “Old Hall” and to our campus in Towson.

They are quite remarkable. Many more of you can share similar stories of multiple buses, departing in the dark of the early morning and getting home in the dark of night.These are stories of grit and commitment. Quite frankly, I am not sure I personally could have done that. I commend you.

CHC CHAMPIONS

T

he Competition Marching Band drummed up a phenomenal score of 96.875 to be crowned the USBands Group II Open Champions this past November. Held at MetLife Stadium, this is the first national marching band championship for the school. Additionally, the band earned top marks for best music and best visuals.

The band earned numerous other awards this year. They were named the Maryland State Group II Champions — sweeping all major awards (best music, best visual, best percussion, best guard, and best overall effect). They also competed at the USBands Mid-Atlantic Competition earning the award of best percussion.

Brian Ecton, Director of Instrumental Music, has worked at Calvert Hall for 16 years.

The competition marching band has two goals, “First, win the state championships.

The second is a reach goal — aspiring for the National Championship. This is such a difficult accomplishment, because the competition is intense and the judging is meticulous. We focus on competing against ourselves in the pursuit of excellence or perfection. The group that is closest to perfection will generally prevail. I knew we had a special group and show early on in the season, but would try not to think about the National Championship. I am so very proud of the growth of our students and our band throughout the season. I don’t think I could have been more ecstatic for the students and parents.”

The band shared its talent locally during the Baltimore Mayor’s Christmas Parade. A few short weeks later they performed in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Competition at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. They once again reigned supreme, winning all major awards and the coveted first place spot. For their first place finish, they were invited to hold the flag during the 2017 Allstate Sugar Bowl National Anthem. They performed a joint halftime show with the other fifteen schools participating in the field competition.

David Lovette II ’17, a member of the competition marching band, was named to the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band which performed in January during halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Ms. Sarah Fabian, Assistant Band Director, was honored as an All-American Band Director at the same bowl game.

arsity Soccer Head Coach, Rich Zinkand ’87, along with assistant coaches Nino Mangione ’05 and Matt Little ’05, led Calvert Hall to its fifth MIAA A championship and first title in 15 years. Dating back to 1928, this is the school’s 32nd league title. The team finished its season 16-4-2.

Zinkand shared, “Winning the first MIAA soccer championship since 2003 is very special for me personally. I saw the players put in all of the hard work and overcome adversity and some doubts to earn the right to hoist the championship trophy at the end of the season. I was fortunate to have a special group of players who believed in themselves and trusted their teammates. After the final whistle, the excitement of the players, students, and alumni proved how much Calvert Hall soccer means.”

In addition to the team title, the MIAA named Ben Alexander ’17 (pictured below), Brady O’Connor ’17, Seth Walker ’17, and Chris Carroll ’17 to the All-Conference team. Alexander and O’Connor were honored by The Baltimore Sun as first team All-Metro players. The Baltimore Sun and Varsity Sports Network named Alexander All-Metro Player of the Year while honoring Zinkand as Coach of the Year. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named Alexander to All-Region (Mid-Atlantic) and All-America teams.

The team’s upperclass leadership played a role in winning the title. Sixteen seniors led the way for a roster consisting of twelve juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen.

It was a trifecta for the Cardinal soccer program this season as the JV soccer team, led by head coach Geoff Foltyn ’00 and assistant coach Trevor Wittman ’09, won their third consecutive MIAA A title. The Freshmen/Sophomore team, coached by Umberto DiStefano, Scott Manger ’09, and Gino Zazzetta ’07, won their third consecutive title.

This is the first time a soccer program has won the MIAA title at all three levels in the same season, according to MIAA records.

alvert Hall was the gateway to a better future for my brother, Joe, and me. We came from a middle class family that had to struggle to pay for us to attend The Hall. My dad worked two jobs, and my mom, a trained teacher in her native Italy, took a job as a clerk in a pharmacy for $1.25 an hour to pay for the tuition, books, and incidentals that kept us here. 100 NIGHTS

An evening for Seniors and their families to celebrate 100 days until graduation. A family dinner is followed by video greetings from Seniors’ parents, a slide show capturing the students’ four years at the Hall, and a presentation of the St. John Baptist de La Salle pins.

HALL NIGHT LONG

All Calvert Hall students and girls from neighboring schools are invited to attend an athletic event or theatrical performance, then enjoy a night of dancing in the gym.

MAMA MIA

An event where the students recognize their moms with a red carnation corsage and serve them a delicious pasta dinner. Mothers receive a special gift with a handwritten note from their sons.

An on-stage event where each Freshman removes a puzzle piece that ultimately reveals a picture of the entire freshmen class. Class pins are also distributed to mark the students “beginning” at Calvert Hall.

COACH KERR SHAVES CANCER

C

ollege Counselor and Assistant Baseball Coach, Mr. Brooks Kerr, shaved his head on October 4, 2016 to raise money for cancer research in support of Nick Delp ’15 who was undergoing chemo treatment. Kerr sold raffle tickets to students, faculty, and staff for the opportunity to shave his head. This event, held in Crispino Stadium and broadcasted on Facebook Live, raised more than $1,000.

r. David Fitzmaurice ’69 received the Calvert Hall Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award. Mr. Louis Miserendino ’99 was recognized by Stanford University for his exceptional teaching. He was nominated for the honor by current Stanford student, Paul Phan ’16.

SNHS INDUCTS INAUGURAL HONORARY MEMBER

alvert Hall’s Science National Honor Society inducted its inaugural honorary member this year. Members of the SNHS chose Mrs. Sue Ward, physics and forensics teacher, for the honor.

IN MEMORIAM OF SUZANNE THOMPSON

Beginning in 2005, Mrs. Thompson taught for 11 years at Calvert Hall.

She earned a BA from the University of Michigan and a MAT from Goucher College. Her son, John Bodnar ’08, is a graduate of CHC. President Brother John Kane FSC offered, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Suzanne. She was a wonderful educator and committed

to the Mission of Calvert Hall with her work in the La Salle Program. St. La Salle emphasized gentleness as a characteristic that teachers should have for their students. Suzanne exemplified this characteristic. We will miss her, she will continue to live in our hearts.”

Principal Charles Stembler ’83 remembers Suzanne as “always being student-centered. All that she did revolved around what was best for her students.”

Mrs. Jennifer Healy, Director of the La Salle Program, shared, “Mrs. Thompson was known for her positive spirit, gentle and caring nature, and her appreciation for all that life had to offer. Beyond academics, she challenged her students to work to become the best possible version of themselves.”

Cardınal Connectıon PRESIDENT’S MEDAL RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

B

rother John Kane FSC, Ed.D., President of Calvert Hall, has announced the Honorable Francis and Janet Kelly as inaugural recipients of the President’s medal. This award will be presented at Calvert Hall’s Gala 2017 “Opportunity” on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

The President’s Medal, instituted in 2016, acknowledges outstanding contributions to the mission of Calvert Hall.

Criteria used to select President’s Medal recipients include length of involvement with Calvert Hall, service and loyalty to the school, promotion and commitment to the school’s mission, as well as representing Calvert Hall in the greater community.

Br. John believes the selection of the Kellys as the first recipients of the President’s medal most appropriate. “Frank and Janet have been passionate supporters of Calvert Hall for more than thirty years. There are many ways the Senator and Janet have moved the mission forward. Kelly Field in Russo Stadium is a visible example of their commitment. Their devotion to and care for Calvert Hall is unrivaled. This honor allows us to recognize and celebrate their passion for Calvert Hall. They truly care about this institution and all of our young men. The same can be said for their commitment to the entire Baltimore region. They are a blessing to Calvert Hall and truly embody the spirit of our mission.”

The Kelly’s four sons, Frank ’82, John ’83, David ’85, Bryan ’87, and grandsons, David ’10, Frank ’10, Patrick ’12, John ’13, Stephen ’13, Timmy ’15, Jacob ’18, Daniel ’20, have attended Calvert Hall. The duo shared, “Our family has experienced and benefited from the excellent education of this outstanding Christian Brothers School. We love Calvert Hall, and we are deeply honored and humbled with the thought of this award.”

IN MEMORIAM OF WILLIAM “BILL” MALSTROM, JR. ’40

t is with great sorrow that Calvert Hall shares the passing on March 23, 2016 of Mr. William “Bill” Malstrom, Jr. ’40.

Malstrom, a football player during his time at The Hall, was a dedicated member of the Alumni Association. For four decades, he chaired the Alumni Bull & Oyster Roast. His son, Tom Malstrom ’84, notes his father’s proudest moment was being inducted in 1981 as an inaugural member of the Calvert Hall Alumni Hall of Fame.

Additionally, Malstrom, Jr. served as President for the Alumni Association and organized numerous class luncheons. He attended Alumni Association meetings well into his 90s.

CHC President, Brother John Kane FSC, shares, “Bill was one of the first people to welcome me to Calvert Hall three years ago. We have great alums, but it would be hard to find one more loyal or passionate than Bill. He is Calvert Hall.”

The Malstrom’s have a long lineage at The Hall. Malstrom, Jr. is the father of William J. Malstrom III ’67, the late Michael G. Malstrom ’70, Paul F. Malstrom ’74, Christopher J. Malstrom ’77, Thomas E. Malstrom ’84 and Barbara Jones (faculty member), brother of the late John D. Malstrom ’55 and grandfather of Christopher J. Malstrom ’07 and Joseph D. Malstrom ’07 and great grand uncle of Jacob M. Trinte ’16.

Austin Ewachiw ’93, CHC Network Administrator, and his team, were instrumental in creating the studio offered at The Hall, “This model, designed and freely distributed by Penn State University, eliminates the need for complicated setup and software editing knowledge.”

Ewachiw shares, “uses so far include students creating videos for various academic projects, practicing for Speech and Debate, and teachers recording lessons to be posted to their class pages.”

he main hallway of Keelty Hall recently received an upgrade. The new display case features a touchscreen monitor highlighting the “Answer the Call” campaign donors, Hall of Fame inductees, and aerial footage of

campus. It also features digital slideshows of all things Calvert Hall. Thank you to Dr. and Mrs. Tom Smyth ’77, Taylor Smyth ’10, Burk Smyth ’10, and Samuel Smyth ’13.

IN MEMORIAM OF ROSE CRISPINO

In his meditation on August 24th, the Feast of Saint Bartholomew, Apostle, John Baptist de La Salle wrote:

“How fortunate you are to carry the holy Gospel with you at all times, for in it is found all the treasures of the knowledge and wisdom of Jesus Christ.”(MTR 159.1) Mrs. Crispino and her late husband Carlo were steadfast, unwavering supporters and benefactors of Calvert Hall for many years.

Brother John Kane FSC remarked, “Through the generosity of Rose and Carlo we have the Crispino Center and Crispino Stadium. For many years Rose quietly volunteered in the athletic office. She was a good and kind-hearted

person, we will miss her dearly.”

A dedicated volunteer, ’Mrs. Rose’ as she was lovingly known, lived and breathed the mission of Calvert Hall College High School. Her service in the athletic department has been described as being “invaluable.”

Lou Eckerl, Athletic Director of Calvert Hall, shared, “Rose’s dedication and support was immeasurable.

Countless baseball players, both current and past, will remember her for her generosity. During the season, she could almost always be found sitting in her personalized seat in Crispino Stadium.”

Boy Scouts Honor Ravens’ Dennis Pita

J

School News

eremiah Pearl ’17 and Sam Vermette ’19 presented Baltimore Ravens’ Dennis Pitta the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. This is a prestigious recognition granted by the local council’s National Eagle Scout Association committee to Eagle Scouts who have demonstrated outstanding achievement at the local, state, or regional level.

UMD Names Calvert Hall Top 25 Source School

T

he University of Maryland College Park named Calvert Hall a 2016-2017 Top 25 Source School for recruiting students into their undergraduate engineering program. The A. James Clark School of Engineering offers students early hands-on educational experiences and many opportunities to participate in national and international competitions.

M

any students, faculty members, and staff participated in the Red Cross blood drive hosted at Calvert Hall. Since 1998, CHC donations have saved nearly 6,000 lives.

n November 19th, members of the Calvert Hall and NDP Science National Honor Society chapters volunteered for the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy Project Clean Stream. The twice a year service project is part of the larger effort to keep the Chesapeake Watershed free of pollution. Volunteers included 26 CHC students and 16 NDP students, along with the chapters’ moderators, Tom Peri ’71 (NDP moderator) and Mr. Charles Motsay ’76 (CHC moderator).

Campus Ministry Drive A Success!

O

ur students helped make the holidays merrier for needy families through our annual Canned Food and Adopt-a-Family drives.

Students brought in more than one ton of food while also adopting more than 50 families from the Greater Baltimore Area.

All-State Chorus & All-State Band

yan Ritzes ’18, Luke Salyers ’20, Shea Carroll ’20 (not featured), John Endres ’17 (not featured), and Robbie Spratt ’17 were named to the All-State Chorus. Spratt, a four year member of the All-State Chorus, also earned a spot in the All-Eastern Chorus. Chris Hennighausen ’18 was named to the All-State band.

Les Mis Comes to The Hall

he Calvert Hall Theatre Department will perform Les Misérables this spring. The show, which features CHC students and females from 14 area high schools, will debut on Friday, March 31 in McManus Theatre. The musical will also show on April 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9. ack Erlandson ’18 completed his Eagle Scout project earlier this fall by planting a vegetable garden in the CHC courtyard. Plans are to use these vegetables in the Dining Hall.

T

he Dining Hall is now the home of a charging station that can charge more than ten devices.

The secure station allows students to charge their tablets and laptops while they are on a free period.

The annual Christmas Concert presented by the CHC Music Department was attended by our Golden Cardinals. The concert was followed by brunch for the more than 100 alumni and their guests. We were honored to host alumni from as early as the Class of 1939.

Christopher DiPaula ’08 married Jessica Yoder at Walt Disney World on May 27, 2016.

John Bennett ’11, after graduating from Muhlenberg College, worked for the Teaching Assistance Program in France and was placed close to the city of Cannes. He applied for local affiliation passes and was able to see 30 movies during the course of the Cannes festival.

He wrote reviews on more than 20 of them, many of which were published on sites such as Movie Waffler (UK) and Film Matter Magazine (US).

Patrick Kelly ’12 was named the recipient of the 2016 Dick Baddour Academic Success Award by the University of North Carolina Men’s Lacrosse Team. Kelly was also selected by the Ohio Machine in Major League Lacrosse – MLL Supplemental Draft.

Alexander Cappuccio ’16 and Andrew Pagano ’17 were named 2015-2016 USA Water Polo Academic AllAmericans. They qualified for this honor by acheiving a 3.6 GPA.

Jacob Bender ’13, a senior at Messiah College, was selected as the NCAA Division III Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of Americans and was also named to the First Team All Mid-Atlantic Region and First Team All-American.

Eric Frazier III ’13, along with his professor, presented at the 2017 Joint Mathematics Meetings for LaSalle University on the topic, “Computeraided investigation of coloring graphs under rainbow connection.”

Anthony Kelly ’13 received the Society of Information Management, Philadelphia Chapter Future Leader Award for La Salle University. Kelly was also inducted in the Alpha Epsilon Alumni Honors Society and received for a second time the Mary and Robert J. Dean Writing Scholarship Award in fall 2016.

Stephen Kelly ’13 was named the co-recipient of the 2016 Turnbull Trophy for Most Valuable Player and was sole recipient of the 2016 Holmes Harden Memorial Award for most groundballs in a season by the University of North Carolina Men’s Lacrosse Team.

Bryan Marine ’15 was named to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-Sophomore 1st team AllAmerican team for Bucknell University.

Nick Peltz ’16 was named University of Maryland baseball manager for the spring 2017 season.
