FROM THE PASTOR’S STUDY Pr. Dennis M. Roser pastorroser@calvarylc.com teachingfaithinchrist.wordpress.com
Dear Friends, In order to share other important information with you; I am interrupting the series on worship that I began in my column for September. Pastoral Care Please know that it is my desire to be at your service in terms of pastoral care. Many of our members have indicated to me their reluctance to call upon me, because of the many things that occupy a pastor’s time. While I have many things which I need to be doing, I am not “busy” in a real sense of the word. Caring for the souls of our members is my primary function here, and so I do not want my occupation with secondary things to supplant my primary work of teaching God’s Word and providing pastoral care to our members. I encourage you to call upon me day or night, when you have need of my services. It is likely that I will go to my grave with items still remaining on my task list, and so I can assure you that the hour or two that I am pleased to direct your way will not be a determining factor in whether or not I complete my other work. I am indeed your servant in Jesus Christ. Additionally, if you are going to be having surgery or become hospitalized, I would love it if you could give us a call or drop me an email. Due to the laws regarding medical privacy, hospitals are not permitted to inform the church when our members are hospitalized. However, we believe in the power of God wrought through prayer and the gifts of medical vocation – and so it is always my desire to visit our members in the hospital for prayer and the anointing of oil in the name of Christ Jesus, the great physician. Snow (doesn’t it make your heart leap for joy to see this word in print?) Snowy days and other inclement weather can present motorists with risks that should be avoided whenever possible. To that end, we urge our members to exercise caution when choosing to attend worship and other parish activities during such conditions.
Since we have no way of alerting everyone, who may be intending to come to worship, of cancellations, I do not cancel worship services. Of course, exceptions to this policy will be made when there is a safety concern in the building, itself. However, I do not want worshipers and worship leaders to “gamble” with their safety, and perhaps their lives, in order to attend worship when roadway conditions advise against it. This is to say, regardless of the weather, I will always be present to offer worshipers God’s Word through Scripture reading and preaching, and the Lord’s Supper. This does not mean that anyone else is expected to be present when weather conditions present serious challenges to your safe arrival. In terms of other activities, we will make every possible effort to inform members of cancellations. Additionally, on days when the Brookfield school district has cancelled school, there will be no fellowship and Christian education programs for children and youth. Communion Cards While I recognize that filling out these blue cards before worship does not exactly “set the world on fire,” it is really the only way that we have for tracking the worship attendance of our members. Monitoring the worship attendance of our members helps the pastor and deacons to be alerted to possible pastoral care needs that have arisen in people’s lives. Failure of churches to respond in times of need in members’ lives is one of the primary reasons that people give when asked about membership inactivity. With the number of people who regularly go “up North,” and those who frequent Florida and Arizona, it is difficult for me to interpret fluctuations in our members’ worship attendance. Even if you only complete the date and your name, I implore you to complete a communion card each week. Certainly, I make every effort to pay attention to who is in worship, but when someone is absent this week, I am frequently unable to remember if they attended last week. Thank you for your help in this. In Christ Jesus,
Pastor
Interested in membership at Calvary? Know of someone that might be interested? Prospective members are invited to join our congregation on an individual basis - since in today’s culture it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find a particular Sunday upon which all prospective members could be received into membership. Thus, we invite prospective members to speak with the pastor about being received into membership at Calvary, which is accomplished through baptism, membership transfer, and affirmation of baptism – according to each person’s circumstances. While members will be received throughout the year on an ongoing basis, we will be offering membership orientation classes twice annually. While these classes are not mandatory, experience has shown that those members who participate in the classes tend to be more active in their congregations than those who do not. The classes are scheduled on different days in the hope that many more persons will be able to attend at least some of the classes. Next Classes... Sunday, November 18, 6:00-7:00 pm, in Fellowship Hall – What Lutherans Believe, Teach, and Confess. Thursday, November 29, 7:00-8:00 pm, in Fellowship Hall – What Lutherans Believe, Teach, and Confess. Tuesday, December 4, 7:00-8:00 pm, in Fellowship Hall – Christian Discipleship Thursday, December 13, 7:00-8:00 pm, in Fellowship Hall – Ministry & Service Opportunities at Calvary Church November 2012 - Page 3

Prayer Corner
Prayer Is Personal
We are grateful for the gift of prayer. But what sort of relationship do we have with the God to whom we pray? Is He distant, authoritative, judgmental, unapproachable? Or do we converse with Him as we might with a dear personal friend? In the familiar passage in Luke 11:1-4, the disciples are watching and listening to Jesus pray, and they ask Him to teach them how to pray. Christ’s reply begins, “When you pray, say: Father . . .” He is our heavenly Father! We have a relationship – a very personal one. This relationship with Him and our understanding of who He is are plainly set out in His Word. He is approachable. He wants us to talk with Him in prayer. He is good. He is lov-
Page 4 - Calvary Crossroads
ing. He is faithful. He is always ready to hear us and to talk with us. What a blessing! Let’s begin our prayers with praise to Him – even before we get to the things that may be weighing heavily upon us. The Book of Psalms holds countless depictions of God’s character, ready to be turned into personal prayers. For example, Psalm 100:5 says: “For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.” In prayer, we may say, “You are good, Father. Your love is unending. You have been faithful from the beginning and always will be. All praise to You!” May our praises join those of the angels as we draw close to God in personal prayer.

We Are the Church—Not a Political Action Committee Reprinted from the October issue of the NALC News
all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28). We are not called to go and make Democrats or Republicans or Conservatives or Liberals or Progressives or Libertarians.
One of the greatest frustrations and disappointments in our prior church bodies and synods was the sense, at times, that we were minority members of a political action committee. My last ELCA synod assembly was in El Paso, Texas, where two speakers spoke about the challenges and tensions along the United States-Mexico border. What was truly disappointing was the fact that both speakers represented the same position with regard to border issues. After being bombarded by these two speakers and their political position, my two congregational voting members told me, “Thanks for inviting us, Pastor, but don’t ask us again.”
Pastor David Wendel Assistant to the Bishop for Ministry and Ecumenism
The reality of those experiences has given many of us cause to be thankful that we are out of a Lutheran church body where we were an unwelcome minority. Now, however, I am concerned that some see the NALC as the opposite of our predecessor church bodies — a conservative political action committee. And it is not only that folks outside of the NALC see us in this way, but that many of our congregational members and pastors understand the NALC in this way. This is especially noticeable in the current build-up to the presidential election in the United States. As I visit our congregations and mission districts, as well as gatherings of clergy and congregations, it seems all too easy for folks to assume that we are all of one mind politically. Some pastors and members seem to think all pastors and members of the NALC will be supporting the same presidential candidate, as well. In spite of what some might think, this is truly not what we wish the NALC to be. When the church becomes nothing more than a political action committee — whether for the right or the left — the church is co-opted and becomes other than what our Lord Jesus Christ intended and created it to be. The Lord commissioned us to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe
Page 6 - Calvary Crossroads
To be sure, our faith informs and drives our activity and involvement in nation, culture and society. Without a doubt, Lutherans have always understood themselves as called to be responsible citizens of the kingdom of this world. Yes, we do agree and speak on behalf of Biblical teaching with regard to marriage and sexuality, as well as the value of all human life from conception to natural death. This does not, however, imply nor require our support for a particular political party or candidate.
Being the Church as the Body of Christ does imply and require that we are catholic — often defined as universal, but more properly meaning those who believe what has been believed “always, everywhere and by all,” as stated in the so-called Vincentian Rule. The Church is that body of Christ which welcomes and involves and includes all people who believe and follow the historic, Biblical teachings as revealed in the Word of God incarnate — our Lord Jesus Christ — and the Word of God written, read and preached. The Church is not defined by a particular political understanding or platform. We need to be reminded of this and to embrace this in the NALC, our congregations, and each of our gatherings. We agree in our confession of Jesus Christ as Lord as proclaimed in the witness of Scripture and our Lutheran Confessions. We may certainly disagree with regard to whom we support for president, which party we belong to, and how we are involved in the public square. Let us in the NALC be the Body of Christ — the Church — not a particular party or political action committee, especially as things heat up in the current presidential election in the United States.

2013 Convocation @ Hope Lutheran in Ladysmith, WI. Date TBD. Bishop’s talk was on Discipleship = Word & Prayer Have to move back to Scripture if we are going to move the church forward. Often find ourselves above the Word because we think we know it, find ourselves above Scriptures. We easily lose sight of our true lack of knowledge of God’s Word. (omniscient view) Stand below Scriptures. Scriptures = God’s Word = God’s knowledge in print. Bishop Bradosky is encouraged by NALC possible enrollment in LWF because of African, South American and Asian Churches that are passionate and fell they are called to be the force that moves the LWF back to the foundation in the Scriptures. Will be a struggle but worth the involvement with our other like-minded Lutheran brothers and sisters. How do we counteract poor statements by ELCA/greater LWF? 2 ways: Fight from within. Outside counter statements. Representative of Lutheran CORE spoke on CORE activity following the NALC formation and they are looking for their next mission.

All Saints Sunday This year we celebrate All Saints Sunday on November 4th. We celebrate this day because of God’s great love and power that all of God’s children, living and dead, have been brought into a right relationship with God and thus made to be saints. On this day we light a candle and ring a bell for each Calvary member who has passed away this past year as well as for those baptized at Calvary during the past year. It is an appropriate time for us to remember and celebrate in this way those Calvary members who have died as well as to celebrate those special ones who have just begun their lives with God through Holy Baptism.
