Welcome On behalf of Calvary Church, let me say how glad I am to have you join us as we present Dickens’ classic story, A Christmas Carol. Through storytelling, music and drama, our cast, crew and musicians have been working for months to bring this story to life in a fresh, compelling way. As Christians, Christmas holds a very special meaning for us; it is the time when we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. More than anything else, we want each person who comes through our doors to know and experience God’s love. If you want to know more about how to have a personal relationship with God, the article on this page and page seven were written just for you. Please let us know if you have any questions. We want you to experience Christmas in a new way this year, with a refreshing, new life, full of joy and peace. If you’re looking for a church, I’d like to invite you to try Calvary. It’s a big church I know, but with the host of opportunities available you’d be surprised at how quickly it can come to feel like home. Do you want to know God? Is that possible? Can a person not just know about God, but really know God and have a relationship with him? Yes! The Bible is His letter to you. It is filled with examples of people who talked with God, walked with him, worked and lived with Him, and followed Him. Even though you may not know Him yet, God already knows you, and He loves you with an undying love. He wrote the Bible to tell you about that love and how you can know and love Him in return. God wants a deep, genuine relationship with you. But there is a problem. God made us with the ability to make choices for ourselves, and we decided to do things our own way. Our bad choices, which the Bible calls sin, separate us from God, and God says the penalty for those choices is death. No matter what we do or how hard we try, we cannot earn our way back into His good graces. But God knew this before it happened, and because He loves us so much, He already had a plan to restore our relationship. Someone who was perfect had to pay the death penalty for our sin. So God became flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus took the death penalty for our sin. As a result, whoever believes in Him can have eternal life. Jesus lived a perfect life and willingly died a horrible death by crucifixion. He was buried in a borrowed tomb for three days. On the third day, God raised Him from the dead, and in so doing, broke the power of sin and death. He paid the penalty for our sin so that we could be restored to God. He not only rose from the dead, but He ascended to heaven, where now He is preparing an eternal home for those who will accept His free gift of salvation and follow Him for the rest of their lives.
So what do you need to do to have this relationship with God? The Bible says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Talk to Him. Tell Him you have done wrong and that you cannot save yourself. Tell Him you believe that Jesus died to pay the penalty for your sin. Ask Him to save you and to forgive your sin. He says if we confess our sin, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sin and cleanse us from all of our unrighteousness. If you do these things, you will have begun to live a new life. The old way of living is gone and you are now a new creation—forgiven and clean inside. He has given you the power to become His son or daughter and to be adopted into his family. There’s nothing quite like the night before Christmas, the anticipation of the birth of the Savior. This year, we invite you to make Calvary’s Christmas Eve service part of your holiday tradition. The word “advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming.” The Advent season is one in which Christians remember the need for a savior and focus on God’s gracious promises to provide one. It is traditionally a time of purposeful reflection, expectation and waiting. During the 2014 season of Advent, we want to reflect on what it means to wait with hope, peace, joy and love as we travel our journeys of faith.

Every Step Counts
Finding God in the Bible on a Long Road Trip by Jakob Jackson Have you ever realized that God was talking to you through the Bible? He can and does do it. My own faith in Jesus began when I realized that the words in the Bible were there to speak to me. My journey toward faith began with a long road trip when I headed out alone to Oregon in the middle of winter. A friend invited me to study with him. He was the first Christian friend I ever had, and I looked forward to joining him. I knew little about Christ at the time, but had many questions and was thankful for him taking the time to answer. The school in Oregon was a Bible school. Though I had just started reading the Bible, I thought I would like to know more. If you asked me at that time if I was a Christian I would have said “yes.” Now as I look back, there was much about Christ I did not believe. I questioned why Jesus would want a relationship with me. I had trouble believing what I read in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” As I drove across the country, the snow was so bad in Wyoming that I counted 13 Semi trucks off in ditches. I could barely drive more than five miles an hour! Since I was a little apprehensive about driving so far without stopping, I decided to stop and rest with some friends in Nevada while the storm blew through for a few days. While
I was with my friends, who also weren’t Christians, I began to make regretful decisions. Even though I was purposefully on a journey to learn more about Jesus, I wasn’t acting like it — and I knew it. By this time, I knew many parts of the Bible but was not trying to live like I believed them. I remember the long drive from Nevada to Oregon. I recall all the condemning thoughts that rode with me. Many thoughts revolved around the idea of all my wrongdoings — how over the past 23 years of life I had accumulated so much sin that there was no way I could be forgiven. I thought all the people at the Bible school were probably perfect people, and I was just some sad jerk, on my way to join them, but destined to remain an outsider. I was tempted to turn back because I “knew” that I didn’t belong there with them, but I kept going.
“... Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. ... And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.” (The Message) I went from questioning if God even loved me and wanted to forgive me to understanding that He had been working on a plan to bring me to Himself for all time. When I accepted this, I went from living with guilt and condemnation to freedom and forgiveness. I went from just knowing some of the truths in the Bible to believing them and living them. My life has never been the same as a result.
The guilt did not stop after I arrived. In fact, those condemning thoughts stayed with me for some time. It wasn’t until months later when I was reading Romans that I was struck knowing the Lord was speaking to me through the words of the Bible. Romans 5:8 says “but God shows his love for us in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
My challenge to you would be to pick up a Bible and try reading it. You could start by setting aside a period of time and reading for 10 minutes. Pick a book in the New Testament. The books of Ephesians and 1 John are my personal favorites, but feel free to choose others (there are also some Bible passages listed on page four of this Calvary Life that you may want to read).
It was amazing. At first many things I read appeared to be “coincidences.” I thought “how do all these ideas seem like they were written directly for me?!” In the midst of God speaking about how much He loved me and even died for me, He showed me how long He had been working on His great plan in Ephesians 1:3-5, 13.

What’s the difference between a Community Group and a Bible Study? Community Groups create an environment for building relationships with other believers by meeting together regularly, praying for each other, studying God’s Word, and caring for one another. Many groups use the sermon discussion questions to go deeper into the Sunday morning message. The groups are geared toward personal life application and discipleship rather than intensive Bible teaching. Do I have to be a member of Calvary Church to join a Community Group? No, if you consider Calvary Church to be your church home, you are welcome to join a Community Group. Our Community Groups are designed for members/attenders of Calvary Church and the friends and neighbors who they invite. What does a typical Community Group meeting look like? An ideal community group would involve conversation, prayer, Bible discussion, and a beverage or possibly a light snack. Groups usually meet one and a half to two hours every other week. We encourage our community groups to periodically plan a social outing, such as a barbeque, Pops concert, ballgame, Festival of Lights, etc. How do groups choose what to study? We encourage all of our newer groups to use the sermon discussion questions which are designed to take the message deeper and facilitate conversation. Each of these questions is tied directly to the Sunday message and often results in an interactive experience for those involved. Some groups that have been together a while may choose to use a different study. I don’t know if I am a Christian. May I still attend a Community Group? Definitely! Joining a Community Group is a great way to find out more about Jesus and see what it means to be a Christian. Your group will become your friends and will be a safe environment to ask any questions that you might have.

When and where do Community Groups Meet? Each Community Group decides when and where they will meet. Most groups meet in homes throughout the greater Grand Rapids area. Are my children welcome to attend the group? We love the idea of families attending a Community Group together, so we offer both Adult and Family Community Groups. Plans for accommodating children vary from group to group, so your group would decide for itself depending on the ages of the children, the space in the home, etc. How many people are in a typical Community Group? There are between eight and twelve people in a typical Community Group--small enough for members to get to know each other well, but large enough for authentic community. What if I cannot attend my Community Group regularly? Consistent attendance is encouraged in order to fully appreciate God’s design for Christian community. If you have a challenging schedule, we encourage you to contact one of the Calvary Community staff for assistance. What if I have tried a Community Group and it wasn’t a good fit? Our desire is to find a Community Group where you can experience God’s love and grow friendships. However, we do recognize that this doesn’t always happen. If you find yourself in a group in which you feel uncomfortable, please do not hesitate contact our staff to help you find another group that might be a better fit. How do I join a Community Group? The best way to join a Community Group is to attend one of our Community Group Launches which are held 2-3 times a year. New groups are formed at the Launch taking into consideration the area of Grand Rapids, age, marital status, and night of the week. However, you may also join an existing group any time by stopping by the Connection Point on Sunday morning or by emailing the Calvary Community staff at community@calvarygr.org or by calling 956-9377, ext. 5650.

Calvary Church Monday Night Bible Study
Within the Special Needs Ministry, we have the awesome opportunity to work with some incredibly godly and self-sacrificing volunteers. They come to us with different backgrounds, personalities, passions, but one thing binds us all together – love for people with Special Needs. I want to say how deeply thankful I am for each of our volunteers. Ministries all over the church rely on solid, committed people and the Special Needs Ministry is no exception. Let me introduce you to a family that has embodied what it means to be faithful and willing to help in all circumstances. Our ministry is better because they are a part of it and their quiet influence touches lives every week. Meet the Farr family! This family of four; Lisa, Jaylen, Deon, and Laron, all help out in various ways in the Special Needs Ministry. Lisa helps with the Go Getters Art Class and as a Kids-N-Action buddy on Wednesdays. Her favorite part about helping in the ministry is that she gets to be around some great individuals! She loves how the Go Getters and the other students are honest, real, and kind no matter what. Working with those with special needs has opened up other opportunities in her life, even to the point of a career change. Since starting in the ministry she has seen how awesome it is to interact closely with those with special needs and has decided to be a full-time caregiver for her niece, Jessica, who is part of Calvary’s Special Needs Ministry! Jaylen, 15, is a Kids-N-Action buddy on Wednesday and a helper buddy in Go Getters. Jaylen has a great attitude and says that helping in the Special Needs Ministry is amazing because he gets to help families in need. Through his service, he says he has learned to be more compassionate toward others. He just loves working with the kids and has a fun time doing so. Deon, 11, is a helper in the Seekers room. He likes to have fun and finds it in the Seekers room! He also thinks that helping in class has helped him be a more patient and kind person in the rest of life. Laron, 7, helps in the Go Getters Art Class. Laron, the youngest of the clan, spends time before his own Kids-N-Action Art class helping the Go Getters in their art class! He has a blast doing it and he loves being able to be a help to others, but also loves the experience of feeling needed in a role as well! Lisa told me that her whole family has been greatly affected by the Special Needs ministry. It’s incredible to see this family serve together, but also to hear that because they serve together their family dynamics have changed and they’ve developed even more patience, kindness, and love toward one another. Thank you to the Farr family, and all the many volunteers who dedicate their time and energy in helping shape lives in the Special Needs ministry, but allowing their own lives to be shaped as well!
Timely Truths from 1 Timothy
Next Study Begins January 5 Monday Night Bible Study is a place where men and women meet weekly to study God’s Word, for prayer and for fellowship. We begin at 7:00pm and end at 8:30pm. Men and women meet in separate small groups to study the lesson and pray for one another. Everyone then meets in the Chapel where our teacher, Ed Kaleefey, shares insights from the lesson. Our study for the Winter/Spring semester is Timely Truths in 1 Timothy, written by Nancy Samra. No pre-registration is needed. Join at any time. Men register in Room 211 and women register in Room 114. A $5 donation per semester is requested to cover costs. Questions? Japan MISSIONS UPDATE
Evangelical Protestant missionaries have been working in Japan for 155 years, but until recently the Japanese have been known as one of the most difficult peoples to reach with the hope of the Gospel. As late as 2010, the only major religious category in the country that was experiencing numerical growth was those who claim to be “non-religious.”
Calvary Church was able to help those who experienced the devastation through our partnership with Asian Access. Recently, we’ve heard from these partners that our gift – and that of churches and caring believers around the world – is having lasting spiritual impact, even three and a half years after the disaster. Here are some highlights:
Then, in March 2011, the three-fold tragedy of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident hit the Tohoku region of Japan, leaving over 18,000 people dead, including 2600 whose bodies were never recovered. Three hundred forty thousand lost their homes and turned to emergency shelter. Those who could remain home faced an enormous cleanup and rebuilding project, while little food and even fewer building materials were available.
One church that formerly had only ten regular attendees was being used as a distribution point for food aid after the service each Sunday. The itinerant pastor decided that for Easter Sunday, they should focus solely on worship and, although he told this to the 10 believers, no one thought to alert the community. When the pastor arrived on Easter Sunday morning, over 100 villagers had already lined up for aid. He apologized for the lack of supplies, explained that the day was special to believers and set aside for worship, and asked the members of the community to go home and return the next day for food distribution. No one moved. Thinking that he had not been clear, he repeated his apology and the instructions to go home and come back tomorrow. Then, one of the villagers spoke up and said, “You are giving us food and caring for us in our time of need. We want to stay and learn why!” Since then, the church has grown to over 50 people consistently, with each participant eager to bring friends and relatives to Christmas services to hear the Good News as well. One pastor has travelled into the devastated coastal regions nearly every day for these three and a half years. Most of his time is spent listening to victims who lost family members, homes,

and even their entire communities. As a result, this one man has established over 30 Christ-following groups called house chapels in the Miyagi prefecture. Most of these groups are made up of people who have no Christian background. In this way, people are coming to Christ in unprecedented numbers for Japan. Another pastor, the leader of a network of churches, has felt the Lord giving him a new vision for Japan. God gave him the numbers “10 x 10.” He asked the Lord for clarity – what did this mean? Now he is trusting God for 10% of the population of Japan to follow Christ within the 10 years between now and 2024. This will mean that close to 50,000 new churches will need to be planted. On a Japanese scale, where after 155 years of Protestant mission outreach, there are fewer than 10,000 churches and less than 1% of the population follows Jesus, this is truly a faith vision, only possible with the power of God. Will you join with us this Christmas season and pray for God to raise up many more church planters to help lead the people of Japan to Him?
OPEN DOOR PROJECT 2014-2015 Through our 2014 Open Door project, we have the opportunity to help establish and nurture churches locally, nationally and globally. We will be blessed to be a part of God’s kingdom being built among Native Americans, as we support our Children’s Pastor Joel Shank, who has been called to plant a church on the San Carlos reservation. We will be blessed to be a part of God’s kingdom being built among the persecuted in the Middle East, as we support partners who are working with Christians who have fled ISIS. We will be blessed to be a part of God’s kingdom being built among the alienated and unchurched in our own country, as we support church plants in areas that are quickly becoming post-Christian. One church plant that we will specifically be assisting is The Pauper’s Chapel, in Portland, Maine. And, we will be blessed to be part of God’s kingdom being built among our local community right here in Grand Rapids, as we help equip a Calvary resident to serve as student’s pastor at Wellspring Community Church in Hudsonville. Will you join with Calvary’s Open Door project to help establish and nurture churches? Our target this year is to raise $244,000. Return your Open Door project giving envelope by mail or in the offering plate any Sunday. The Gathering Place Women’s Bible Study resumes on Tuesday, January 13. You are welcome to enter in midway through this year’s focus on Knowing Christ: Lessons from Paul’s Life and Ministry. Women gather Tuesdays at 9:00am in the Fellowship Hall. Within the large group meeting we have quality time to catch up with friends and make new ones, and to be inspired by thought-provoking speakers, drama, music and testimonies. It is very common for teens to experience a variety of conflicting emotions during this time. Art Class (Room 112): Being creative with a variety of mediums is the focus of the art class.
Choir (Chapel): This group spends time learning new songs and singing old favorites. Several times a year, they lead or assist with worship. Scripture Intake (Room 207): Listening to God’s Word along with a brief discussion is the focus of this group.

What to Do in the Event of
SEVERE WEATHER If a severe weather emergency occurs during a time that people are in the building, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) will activate the tornado warning system at which time all occupants need to seek shelter in one of the designated lower level rooms, with a yellow window sticker. Once you are in a shelter, do not leave until an all clear is given. During times of possible severe weather the ERT will monitor the weather and notify ministries in the building of possible safety precautions as needed. In the event of severe weather, cancellation information will be announced via Calvary’s website, Facebook page. group emails and our phone system. If you run a program at church and are concerned about the weather, you need to contact your Ministry staff representative. They will coordinate and communicate with the Facility Services staff to make a decision about any scheduled events.

In our teaching series at Calvary this year, Every Step Counts: A Journey of Faith, we are considering our lives as a spiritual journey. Together we are looking at the book of Hebrews, and seeing how life is a journey that God calls each one of us to make toward Himself. The good news is that Jesus paved the way for us and that God provides everything we need along the way. However, this does not make the journey easy. In fact, it’s impossible without faith. Faith is what enables us to start our journey, and it is what keeps us going, one step at a time. What is your next step of faith?
