MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT AND DEAN THE 2018-2019 ACADEMIC YEAR PROVED TO BE ONE OF SIGNIFICANT GROWTH FOR THE COLLEGE OF PROFESSIONAL AND GLOBAL EDUCATION (PaGE). OUR COLLEGE CONTINUED ITS WORK WITH DIVERSE COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO DELIVER PROGRAMMING THAT MEETS THE NEEDS OF ANGELENOS AT ALL STAGES OF THEIR CAREERS.

Globally, Cal State LA International expanded the University’s reach. Despite ongoing geopolitical challenges, new international partnerships were formed, making study abroad a tangible reality for more of our students than ever. Meanwhile, the University’s Semester in LA program continued its impressive growth trajectory, providing students from around the world with an opportunity to study in California’s largest city. Moreover, in a major achievement for Cal State LA, we profile Karyos Tyus, who is the first student in the institution’s history to be awarded the respected Boren Award to study abroad.

In this year’s report, Bridging Communities, you will learn about our new Leadership and Management in Ambulatory Care Nursing program developed in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, and Cal State LA’s Chin Family Institute for Nursing and the Department of Healthcare Management in the College of Business and Economics.

Designed to equip nurses with critical business skills, the program is dedicated to developing well-rounded medical leaders who excel at patient care and beyond.

As a new academic year begins, we are more driven than ever to push our mission forward. With your support and partnership, we will continue to answer workforce development needs with innovative programming that propels Los Angeles’s global economy forward. We will launch new degree programs that expand access to innovative fields and careers, and we will grow international opportunities that foster the continued global exchange of ideas for our students.

Highlighting the impact of our Cal State LA Downtown degree programs, we profile Roshawn Davis, a Bachelor of Arts Psychology student who embodies the ideal that it’s never too late to achieve and grow. In pursuing her degree, she overcomes multiple obstacles and takes an inspiring step in what has been a challenging life journey. Additionally, we spotlight Kimberly Medina, a graduate of our Master of Social Work-Advanced Standing program. After successfully graduating three cohorts, the program continues to educate and prepare students to address diverse Los Angeles communities through its urban generalist focus.

BETTER HEALTH THROUGH

LEADERSHIP EDUCATION

EMPLOYEES NEED INDUSTRYVALUED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO FLOURISH IN TODAY’S COMPETITIVE WORKPLACE. TO MEET THIS EVERLASTING DEMAND, KAISER PERMANENTE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (KPSC) REACHED OUT TO THE CHIN FAMILY INSTITUTE FOR NURSING AT CAL STATE LA TO HELP DESIGN A LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR THEIR NURSES WORKING IN AMBULATORY CARE ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. THE UNIVERSITY ANSWERED WITH THE LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT IN AMBULATORY CARE NURSING PROGRAM.

CAL STATE LA + KAISER PERMANENTE

The need for the program arose when leadership from Regional Professional Development and Research and United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP) identified knowledge gaps in certain areas that nurses would need to transition into management positions. “For a nurse to successfully transition into a management role, he/she needs to have a keen understanding of business models, strategic thinking and operational alignment, along with their nursing education and experience.

This program was created to provide the participants with tools and resources to help them be successful in their pursuit of professional growth beyond direct patient care,” says Hazel Torres, M.N.,R.N., director of professional development for ambulatory care nursing at KPSC. Torres partnered with Lorie Judson, Ph.D., R.N., N.P., executive director of the Chin Family Institute for Nursing and asked if she could develop a course for the nurses to help increase competencies in leadership

and business management. “In addition to fulfilling a need in our nursing community, this request was an opportunity to create a unique higher education program and partnership model involving incredible organizations,” says Judson.

Denise Duncan, R.N., UNAC/UHCP President and Torres partnered to plan, coordinate and implement the Leadership and Management in Ambulatory Care Nursing program.

Under the direction of Judson, a course proposal and curriculum were created with Andre Avramchuk, Ph.D., director of Cal State LA’s Department of Health Care Management in the College of Business and Economics, in collaboration with Cal State LA’s College of Professional and Global Education (PaGE), to address the needs that were identified. “The mission of the Chin Family Institute is the advancement of nursing education, advocacy, leadership and action. This includes continuing education of nurses like those at Kaiser Permanente,” says Judson. “It helped

= GROUNDBREAKING NURSING MANAGEMENT TRAINING tremendously that PaGE had the resources to accommodate and administer the program so that students receive master’s level credit outside of the traditional university setting.” The approved curriculum was presented to the KPSC Regional Workforce Development Nursing Committee, a committee of labor and management nursing leaders who guide and design career development, and education for nurses. Upon approval, it was then presented to Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust (BHMT) for funding.

BHMT provides educational training, with the goal of creating a culture that values and invests in lifelong learning, and enhanced career development opportunities for represented employees.

at Kaiser Permanente Orange County Medical Center says, “I applied to this program because I want to bridge the gap between managers and staff, as well as advance my career.”

CLASSES ARE PROVIDED IN A HYBRID FORMAT, WITH APPROXIMATELY HALF OF THEM GIVEN AT KAISER PERMANENTE REGIONAL OFFICES IN PASADENA AND THE OTHER HALF ONLINE. TAUGHT BY DONNA TOWNSEND, M.S.N., R.N., A DOUBLE GRADUATE OF CAL STATE LA WITH EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN HEALTHCARE ADMINISTRATION IN LARGE HOSPITALS, PROGRAM INSTRUCTION COVERS HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP AND BEHAVIOR, FINANCING AND MANAGING COSTS, MANAGERIAL THINKING AND PERFORMANCE, STRATEGIC PLANNING AND MARKETING, QUALITY IMPROVEMENT, AND MANAGING PROFESSIONALS, AMONG OTHER TOPICS.

During their semester, students participate in class and on online discussion boards. They are expected to present in groups on various subjects, culminating in a final paper and team project presentation. “One of the great things about this class was Donna’s ability to provide examples from her work and connect them to a concept that we were learning,” continues Webster. “I learned that a strong manager is one that listens, values people and allows for a shared governance,” says Lawrence.

The Leadership and Management in Ambulatory Care Nursing is already generating industry buzz. The program has been presented

by Torres and Judson at health care industry conferences across the region with many attendees expressing their interest in participating in this program or replicating it at their locations.

HISTORY AT

KARYOS TYUS IS THE FIRST CAL STATE LA STUDENT IN THE UNIVERSITY’S HISTORY TO RECEIVE THE PRESTIGIOUS BOREN AWARD, AN INITIATIVE OF THE NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM, TO STUDY ABROAD.

HOME & ABROAD His interest in international studies was ignited during his sophomore year when he attended a Cal State LA Study Abroad Information Session, and learned of the travel opportunities and financial assistance possibilities that were available to him. Since then, Tyus’ passion for language learning and building cultural bridges has come to fruition.

Through CSU International Programs, a system-wide study abroad program for California State University students, Tyus first studied abroad at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico where he studied Spanish and worked in the university’s International Affairs office for one semester. His interest in the Spanish language fulfilled a desire to communicate and bridge the African American and Latino communities in his Los Angeles neighborhood. “This trip provided me with the cultural insight I wanted to experience. Afterwards, I could not wait to do it again!”

Upon returning from Mexico and declaring an English major with a Pan-African Studies minor, Tyus met with Cal State LA’s study abroad coordinator to discuss additional opportunities that would

contribute to his academic growth, and personal and professional development.

“I wanted advisement on selecting a funded study abroad program that would enhance my studies and set me on a career path after graduation,” says Tyus. During their meeting, Tyus learned about the Boren Award. In exchange for study abroad funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the Federal Government national security arena for at least one year following graduation. “Having studied African history as part of my minor, I became very interested in the connection between the United States and Tanzania, and my Boren application narrative reflected that.”

The strength of Tyus’ application earned him a $20,000 Boren Award to study Swahili, a critical foreign language, first at the University of Florida (UF), and then at the MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation in Tanzania.

After attending a Boren Scholar orientation in Washington, D.C., Tyus took two months of intensive classes and tutoring to learn Swahili at UF. On weekends, he met with Swahili speaking families to practice using the language.

In Tanzania, Tyus stayed with a family in Arusha, north of Dar es Salaam, while taking additional classes in Tanzanian literature, history and advanced Swahili.

PER MY SCHOLARSHIP CONTRACT, I COULD NOT SPEAK ENGLISH IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE FULL LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL IMMERSION. TO DEEPEN MY MENTAL INVOLVEMENT, FOR ONE WEEK I ALSO LIVED WITH THE MASSAI PEOPLE, AN AFRICAN TRIBE THAT STILL LIVES A NOMADIC LIFESTYLE. THAT WAS AN EXPERIENCE I’LL NEVER FORGET. Tyus’ career goal is to become a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service, promoting peace, supporting prosperity and protecting American citizens while advancing the interests of the United States abroad. To that end, he will attend a U.S. Department of Justice job fair in Washington, D.C. this summer to meet with representatives from various areas of the Federal government to work on job placement either at a U.S. embassy or in the U.S. Capitol immediately upon graduation in 2020.

“Studying abroad shifts your mindset to a more global spectrum of seeing values you didn’t recognize before,” said Tyus. His advice to Cal State LA students thinking of studying abroad is to embrace being uncomfortable. “Being a foreigner is a mind-blowing experience, if you just take the leap.”

CAL STATE LA + MEXICO + TANZANIA BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security

Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are excluded.

DETERMINED, AND WISE BEYOND HER YEARS, CAL STATE LA DOWNTOWN (DTLA) PSYCHOLOGY STUDENT ROSHAWN DAVIS IS CREATING HER OWN DESTINY.

TRANSITIONING

TOWARDS SUCCESS After aging out of the foster care system and experiencing homelessness, she sought stability that she never found as a child.

Opting not to rely on others for help, she realized that her life experiences were a springboard to a future that would allow her to share strength with others. Higher education was a necessary first step toward transforming past struggles into fuel for the future.

While earning her associate of arts degrees in both social services and psychology at Pasadena City College (PCC), an advisor counseled Roshawn on academic next steps and career goals.

“Up until then I had received little direction on a career or anything much in the way of planning,” says Roshawn. “Studying psychology really helped me better understand WHAT I’VE EXPERIENCED AND where I had come LEARNED IN LIFE, AT SCHOOL from and where I AND AT WORK HAS GIVEN ME was at that point.”

THE POWER TO HELP PROPEL Quietly insightful by nature, Roshawn OTHERS TO BE THE BEST THAT realized that by THEY CAN BE. continuing her studies in psychology, she could combine her knowledge with an innate understanding of people and human behavior to evoke change in the lives of others.

After leaving PCC, Roshawn received news that she was one of 25 current and former foster youth accepted into a full-time 24-month paid career development internship with the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. “Being around professionals and being included on a team reminded me of why education is so important and how the work keeps the system going,” says Roshawn. “Now I was even more motivated to get a bachelor’s degree.”

Initially, Roshawn planned to attend a university outside California. After securing her position at the Public Defender’s Office, however, she discovered Cal State LA’s downtown location, PaGE

convenient to her home and job, and within easy access of public transportation. “DTLA is its own little culture. The staff are family.

They take the time to get to know you and are knowledgeable about financial aid, and provide answers to all my questions. They make it easy to be successful.” In addition, Roshawn says, the Cal State LA professors made her a better student, which in turn, has allowed her to find a proper balance between school, work and life.

Her interest in company values and direction, including the value of human capital in organizations, stems from her desire to impact the system in a meaningful way. “What I’ve experienced and learned in life, at school and at work has given me the power to help propel others to be the best that they can be.”

As she enters her final year at Cal State LA Downtown, and continues her work with the Public Defender’s Office, Roshawn has taken a deeper interest in human behavior. She plans to pursue her doctorate in Industrial-Organizational Psychology (I/OP), the science of behavior in organizations and a growing area of interest within human resources. “In order for organizations to

She hopes to forge a better understanding of the benefits of implementing positive change while providing solutions at work.

“I want to show people how to believe in themselves, persevere and be proactive, just as I did and continue to do.”

ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF

SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE

THIS SPRING, KIMBERLY MEDINA CONFIDENTLY AND PROUDLY WALKED ACROSS THE COMMENCEMENT STAGE TO RECEIVE HER MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK (M.S.W.) DEGREE EARNED AT CAL STATE LA DOWNTOWN. NOW IT WAS TIME TO PUT WHAT SHE LEARNED INTO PRACTICE BY FINDING A JOB WHERE SHE COULD HELP TO BRIDGE SOCIETAL DIVIDES. Through the Cal State LA School of Social Work’s M.S.W. ASP (Advanced Standing Program) program, students like Medina master leadership skills to analyze, intervene and evaluate with diverse, underserved, and oppressed clients and communities. Because of the program’s Advanced Urban Generalist focus, Cal State LA M.S.W. graduates assume multi-faceted roles as clinicians, group facilitators, supervisors, community organizers, advocates and policy analysts.

According to Siyon Rhee, M.S.W., Ph.D., professor at the School of Social Work, due to Cal State LA’s geographic locale, the M.S.W. program curriculum is uniquely designed to reflect the environmental needs of eastern Los Angeles County, especially East Los Angeles or of any urban environment.

TODAY’S SOCIAL WORKER HAS TO BE READY TO TAKE THEIR PRACTICE TO A HIGHER LEVEL; TO MOVE BEYOND THE INDIVIDUAL LEVEL TO PREVENTION AND INTERVENTIONS PROVIDED ON A LARGE SCALE THAT AFFECT ENTIRE COMMUNITIES AND SYSTEMS OF CARE. SIYON RHEE, M.S.W., PH.D.

Because the median income of East Los Angeles is lower to other comparable local communities, elective courses within the M.S.W. curriculum provide Cal State LA students with education and training on public and political advocacy, including evidence-based research and statistics, to match the environmental needs of both individuals and the larger population like those within immediate reach of the University. “The urban generalist social worker has to have the capacity to become a change agent to improve systems that will lead to increased mental health outcomes and that is what our program tries to achieve,” says Rhee.

Another key component of the M.S.W. ASP program, says Rhee, is the role of professors who can share their professional practice experiences with students to reinforce course work and allow for lively classroom engagement.

“To prepare students to undertake the rigors of social work, my teaching emphasizes actual client stories culled from years of experience as a social worker. Students tend to remember critical thinking applications better this way and not just through what they’ve read in textbooks,” says David Green, M.S.W., professor of social work. “I like to think that as professors, we’re keeping our students on the cutting-edge of what’s going on in the social work universe to help them better understand the field of social work, shifts and trends in the industry, and among populations with the most need.”

According to U.S. News and World Report (2018), Cal State LA ranks as one of the top M.S.W. programs in Los Angeles County. Rhee believes that a key reason for this achievement is that Cal State LA is a teaching University that places an emphasis on faculty and student interaction and mutual respect. “I encourage active relationships among faculty and students alike. This is the foundation of a quality program,” says Rhee.

“I respected and admired the professors in the program as they provided me with the most current information about the social work field,” says Medina. “Social work is evolving to be more than what it’s been in the past in order to fix some of our nation’s social challenges in a new and exciting way. As a social work urban generalist, I am well-prepared to move beyond direct practice to work toward just social policies, as well as conduct and apply research.”

Almost immediately upon graduation, Medina secured a position at Amanacer, one of Los Angeles’ largest mental health and case management agencies providing services primarily to Hispanic neighborhoods in central and downtown Los Angeles.

FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS A SECOND LANGUAGE, ADJUSTING TO A NEW CULTURE AND EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN THE UNITED STATES CAN SEEM PARTICULARLY FORMIDABLE. THOUGH A FRIENDLY CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT, LIKE THE ONE AT CAL STATE LA, CAN ENHANCE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ SENSE OF WELL-BEING AND CONNECTEDNESS, PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT OPPORTUNITIES CAN GIVE THEM AN EVEN DEEPER SENSE OF BELONGING.

CREATING A

CROSSROADS TO WELL-BEING Since 2012, Crossroads, a Friendship Partner of International Students Inc., has been a Cal State LA International Programs and Global Engagement community partner, providing hundreds of international students with friendship and understanding through an intersection of culture, learning, hospitality and faith.

Comprised primarily of volunteers from the Mandarin Baptist Church of Los Angeles (MBCLA), located in nearby Alhambra, Crossroads is overseen by church staff and managed by John Sorensen, leader of MBCLA’s International Student Ministry.

John, with assistance from his wife Linda, and church volunteers have become a family away from home for hundreds of Cal State LA international students, providing them with the gift of American culture since 2006.

“Students need a friend as soon as they arrive in the United States, and especially during the first six months. Otherwise, a student may be a lonely ‘foreign’ student during their years in our country,” says Sorensen. “Bringing international college students and people living in the United States together, people of all walks of life, is important because it creates relationships, formulates ideas and ultimately leads to a better world.”

Medrik Minassian says that coming to a new country can be intimidating because of adjustments to expectations.

“Crossroads is my off-campus family.

When we gather, we make new friends and discuss our experiences, including challenges and successes. When any of us reach out to John and Linda we are received with open arms.”

FROM PICKING UP STUDENTS AT THE AIRPORT AND FINDING HOUSING, TO SETTING UP BANK ACCOUNTS, MOBILE PHONE SERVICE AND TAKING SIGHTSEEING TRIPS, CROSSROADS VOLUNTEERS ARE THERE TO ASSIST WITH ADJUSTING TO AMERICAN LIFE. VOLUNTEERS ALSO TUTOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN ENGLISH, MEET FOR CONVERSATION PRACTICE, HELP WITH CLASS ASSIGNMENTS AND PROOFREAD STUDENT PAPERS. “I got involved with Crossroads after they helped me find a home near school. I couldn’t believe how nice they were,” says Onyx Ahmad. Ahmad’s first impression led him to take a more active role in Crossroads by donating his graphic design expertise to create promotional materials for the organization.

Once a month, Crossroads and MBCLA host dinners where discussions and idea exchanges take place among students and volunteers. Typically structured around American holidays, these social occasions facilitate conversations comparing and contrasting social practices, and sometimes result in more personal issues coming to the surface such as homesickness, financial problems, health services, and maintaining cultural and religious customs. “Through Crossroads, I gained a better understanding of American traditions and society that were very different than what is portrayed via the media and popular culture in my home country of India,” says recent graduate Vimalroy Kancharla.

“When Linda and I were given the reigns of Crossroads, we knew that our combined backgrounds in international relations and ministry had met their match,” continues Sorensen. “After one of our recent dinners that included a magic show, a student from India said to me ‘Tonight was the best time I had in America!’

You can’t imagine how exhilarating that was to us…to know that you have contributed to your guest’s well-being is a great feeling and confirms the Crossroads mission of meeting the needs of international students.”

THANKS TO CAL STATE LA’S WINTER SESSION, CALAHAN CROSSED THE FINISH LINE ON TIME AND SET-OFF ON A NEW CHAPTER OF HER LIFE WHEN SHE RECEIVED HER MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION THIS SPRING.

Introduced in 2018, Winter Session is an accelerated academic term that allows students to complete a course toward their degree in just three weeks between the fall and spring semesters.

ADMINISTERED BY THE COLLEGE OF PROFESSIONAL AND GLOBAL EDUCATION, WINTER SESSION AND SIMILAR INTERSESSIONS IN MAY AND SUMMER ARE AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF THE CSU’S GRADUATION INITIATIVE 2025, WHICH STRIVES TO INCREASE STUDENT GRADUATION RATES WHILE ALSO ELIMINATING OPPORTUNITY AND ACHIEVEMENT GAPS. Since its debut, Winter Session has grown in scope and popularity. In winter 2019, Cal State LA’s academic colleges expanded course offerings to include over 80 sections representing a wide spectrum of academic colleges and departments ranging from humanities to STEM fields. The term closed with over 900 enrolled students. A push to provide diverse course offerings proved critical for students like Calahan who balanced competing demands for her time by taking required courses outside of the regular semester.

In fact, by taking an information systems class over Winter Session, Calahan was able to carry a lighter course load during her last spring semester and focus her attention on those classes. “Instead of spending a lot more time commuting or working on course work for another class, I was able to invest more time into my final courses,” says Calahan. Attending Winter Session also allowed Tessa to keep her head in a space more conducive to school. “My class

kept my mindset in the habit of studying and learning. This made transitioning to the spring semester a lot smoother.”

As demand for Winter Session has grown so has the push to further expand course offerings to meet additional student needs. While Calahan was able to get ahead by completing a needed business course, several of her friends who are also enrolled in master’s degree programs were not as lucky.

“I had friends who wanted to take classes but they did not align with their course work. I believe that if there were more master’s level courses available, my colleagues would be interested in taking them,” Calahan said. Feedback from students is essential. Going forward, the College of Professional and Global Education, and its cross-campus academic partners, will work together to deliver more of the classes that students need.

TEACHING CRUCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR AN EVER-CHANGING

LEGAL SYSTEM

IN 1978, CAL STATE LA’S PARALEGAL STUDIES CERTIFICATE (PLS) PROGRAM RECEIVED ITS FIRST APPROVAL

BY THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (ABA). AMONG THE EARLIEST PROGRAMS OF ITS TYPE IN A UNIVERSITY SETTING TO RECEIVE THIS DESIGNATION, CAL STATE LA HAS PLAYED A UNIQUE ROLE IN TRAINING A CORE SEGMENT OF THE REGION’S LEGAL WORKFORCE.

In the 41 years since, the program has navigated the peaks and valleys of Los Angeles’ legal services industry, adjusted its curriculum when necessary, and moved to the heart of the city, Cal State LA Downtown. Evolving to embrace change, the program has remained true to its mission of preparing individuals with the skills needed to pursue a career in the legal profession or accelerate their growth in the field.

The PLS program was a natural next step for alumna Chrissy Davie (2014). As a legal assistant, the program’s content proved practical for her. “I was doing corporate legal work so the corporate and

contract classes were very beneficial. I was familiar with the work, but learned new concepts,” she said. When the time came to move up in the field, Davie’s paralegal certificate proved invaluable to her marketability. “Having the certificate definitely helped my search. Some jobs required it, while others highly encouraged it.” In her current role as Director of Corporate Governance and Contract Administration for the Anschutz Entertainment Group, Inc. (AEG), Davie finds herself still putting the skills she gained from her program to work. “I was able to take classes in different areas of law, which provided me with knowledge that I’m able to access in my current position when needed.”

For career changers, Cal State LA’s PLS program has long served as a gateway to a new profession. This was true for PLS alumnus Adam De Leon (2014).

For De Leon, a paralegal certificate opened the door to an industry that could utilize skills he gained as an undergraduate.

“I saw a paralegal certificate as a way to break into an industry where I would have a clear-cut job title and set of skills while simultaneously being able to apply past knowledge and experience,” said DeLeon who received a bachelor’s degree in criminology from University of California, Irvine.

Now, with several years of experience behind him, De Leon reflects on the integral role that the PLS program played in his success. “I use the skills I learned in

my legal writing course every day. I also often use the skills I learned in my legal research course.” Summarizing the value of the program, De Leon shared that it’s “a low-cost way to enter an interesting and challenging career path.”

Paralegal Studies Program Director Lisa Rauhauser believes a combination of instructional quality and a driven student population have proven crucial to its longevity. “The consistent earning of ABA approval means our program regularly meets or exceeds ABA requirements for academic excellence,” she said. In addition, she sees Cal State LA’s program as well-equipped to evolve with the changing profession. “With automation increasingly taking over some tasks, paralegals of tomorrow need to excel in technology.

Our program talks about the future of paralegalism and how technology is a key growth factor. For Rauhauser, interacting with diverse students, remains her favorite part of the job. “I learn through interaction and the exchange of ideas, from students just as they learn from me.”

WHO WE SERVE For fiscal year 2018-2019*, the College of Professional and Global Education (PaGE) generated approximately $18,000,000 in revenue through extended education programs and classes, both domestically and internationally.

As a self-support college, the College of Professional and Global Education receives no state funding for its operation.

Tuition collected for each program covers instructional and administrative costs, as well as University and Chancellor’s Office overheads.

In addition to offering a variety of extended education programs and classes, PaGE oversees the University’s International Programs and Global Engagement through Cal State LA International.

Cal State LA International is a state supported endeavor that is tasked with providing student and scholar services to international students and faculty, creating and maintaining strong international partnerships, and developing study abroad opportunities for Cal State LA students.
