Striving for power and downforce, our 2015 Formula car features a built Yamaha WR450F engine and enhanced aerodynamic package including an underbody diffuser. The tub utilizes a layup schedule that will improve stiffness and decrease weight. A new driver controls system includes nolift upshifts and rev-matched downshifts to maximize driveability and shave seconds off lap times.

Our Formula Electric car retains the same suspension, electronics, and lightweight, single-motor drivetrain that were all-new for last year; however, a unique cut-and-fold composite chassis that splits in two for battery removal and charging will be stiffer and lighter than previous steel spaceframes. Any unforeseen changes will be in the name of reliability, as only three teams finished endurance last year. We are excited to compete in a new and innovative event that no doubt gives a glimpse into the future of auto racing.

Formula and Formula Electric will race in the Lincoln IC and EV competitions in June, respectively. Our cars will be more competitive than any year previous—a representation of our developed and larger-thanever program. We hope to place top ten in both divisions and begin our rise to the top of Formula Student World Rankings.

CARS & COMPETITORS Cal Poly Racing is the largest student SAE program in California—this year, we aim to be the best. Last year was our most successful season ever: our Baja car placed 9th out of 90 schools in El Paso, Texas and our Formula car placed 26th out of 119 schools at Michigan International Speedway. Delayed shipment of a new differential prevented us from running at Formula Electric in Lincoln, Nebraska; however, we have since completed the car and are testing components that will be carried over to this year’s chassis.

We have been hard at work designing and building new vehicles with carefully-scrutinized improvements for our 2015 competitions. This year, our vehicles will feature a custom steering rack that was designed and built in-house. It will shave precious pounds and boost design scores for all three cars.

Our Baja car has a redesigned five-link suspension system, optimized CVT transmission, and expanded use of composite structures—we were one of the lightest cars last year, now we want to be the lightest at our competitions at Auburn in April and Portland in May.

Our three vehicles compete in dynamic events that measure all-out performance metrics— acceleration, handling, and braking—as well as endurance races that test durability and efficiency. At competition, each vehicle is marketed as a consumer product in a formal business presentation, promoting reliability, serviceability, affordability, and safety.

BUDGET Cal Poly Racing’s governing board allocates funding towards each car through Officer votes—similar to a board of directors. Teams must present Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews to justify designs, identify necessary resources, and propose budgets for car completion.

If deemed satisfactory and achievable, funds are “unlocked” for purchasing and manufacturing. If not, design revisions and clarifications are made to gain Officers’ majority approval.

Every Officer has a technical role on one of the three vehicles, with a relatively even split between each one. Therefore, majority funding approval is never guaranteed—design decisions must have a strong technical basis along with thorough costbenefit analysis (revise). This club-wide collaboration and accountability sets us apart from most other student SAE programs which only build one or two vehicles. We are able to draw on experience and lessons-learned from three cars in order to rapidly improve year-to-year. Our results-driven environment also ensures that funding is allocated properly and efficiently towards feasible improvements.

Our Baja car generally requires less funding due to an unmodified, competition-mandated engine package. Much of Baja’s budget goes towards data acquisition systems and test equipment, as field testing is the best way to quantify the abuse of off-road racing. Last year’s Formula car featured a new Yamaha WR450F engine and composite aerodynamic package that made up a majority of its spending. The Formula Electric car went through a radical redesign featuring an Emrax brushless AC motor, a Drexler clutch-pack differential, new high-power batteries, and liquid cooling to maximize efficiency.

Our 2013-14 funding totaled $103,263, with 55% coming from donations.

Budget cuts are projected to reduce school funding year-to-year, so industry will soon become our largest benefactor for improving our cars and competing internationally. We received 34 donations for $1000 or less that made up 57% of contributions. Every dollar counts!
