ARCHITECT PROFILE ZGF’s portfolio shows a plethora of academic buildings, healthcare facilities, and mix-use developments. Their designs are often driven by the physical environment to integrate beauty, materiality, and technical solutions. The UCLA Wasserman Football Training Center is just one project of ZGF’s many campus additions. The building works into a larger campus plan that includes adjacent sports centers.

ZGF has over 600 professionals working in the practice with offices in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York City, and Vancouver, British Columbia. The firm has won over 1000 awards, including the Architecture Firm Award. The American Institutes of Architects honored ZGF with their highest honor award for “creatively transforming client needs and aspirations into elegant, inventive architectural form, and establishing a standard of excellence and expectation of quality to which other firms aspire.”

PROJECT BACKGROUND AND DESIGN PROCESS Designing on a college campus along with unusual circumstances provided various struggles during the design process. During the design phase of the UCLA Wasserman Football Training Center, the campus architect passed away; the site flooded due to a pipe burst; and the head coach of the football team was let go. The busted pipe displayed the need for more efficient means of receiving and recycling water on the site, yet UCLA did not allow for many of ZGF’s suggestions. Therefore, the utilities remained the same. The unfortunate death of the campus and state architect added to the design confusion, for the team had worked closely with him to create a clear relationship with the traditional campus style and the new building. The design team worked the closest with the head coach, as well. He contributed to the slight minimalist style that the building conveys. Additionally, he outlined the program necessary for the training center. At the end of the design process and the beginning of the construction process, the coach was let go and another coach was hired with a different style and ideas about the building. Last minute changes were then made to fit with his ideas.

CONTEXT The building is oriented with its longest sides facing east and west. This was decision was made maintain uninterrupted views of the football field. Additionally, the building became an entrance to the all of the sports complexes on this side of campus. Thus, a specific entry sequence was designed and special attention was given to the lobby during the design phases.

CLIMATE ANALYSIS AND RESPONSE Los Angeles has a Mediterranean climate. There is little rainfall and ample sunlight throughout the year. Sunlight is harnessed in this project through water radiantly heated on the rooftop.

Chilled beams, shading, and natural and fan-forced ventilation are used to cool the structure.

Internal gains, direct solar gain, and thermal mass are used to warm the space.

EGRESS AND CIRCULATION The exit access, exit, and exit discharge work in conjunction to allow people to move safely from remote spaces to public streets. The system overlaps with the circulation system with the fire stairs. There is an additional set of stairs that are experiential. Additionally, there are two elevators.

*Columns are continuous. They were exploded by floor to better display the beams and girders.

STRUCTURE This building utilizes steel as the main structural element with metal decking. Concrete makes up the retaining walls surrounding the basement and the slab-on-grade foundation.

Moment connections combat lateral loads. Utilizing this material allows for the open floor plan for the main exercising units as well as decent span lengths. The high fire resitivity is also necessary for higher education buildings.

ENVELOPE: GLASS CURTAIN WALL | ALUMINUM CURTAIN WALL The East Facade utilizes a glass curtain wall to maintain the view of the two practice fields and UCLA campus. The first level provides minimal transition between exterior and interior physical conditioning. Eighty percent of the East Facade supplies the glass curtain wall. Vertical, glass louvers block direct heat gain from this orientation. For the remaining facades, an aluminum curtain wall encases the second and third levels. The North Facade has a window wall ratio of sixty percent due to the glass curtain wall on the ground floor. This is utilized to create a connection with the remaining sports facilities because the architects designed the lobby and adjacent courtyard as a central social area for these facilities. The West and South Facades have thirty percent window wall ratio due to their orientation and the lack of passive heating needed for the program. These facades first welcome users to the site and act as a gateway to the remaining sports facilities. As a result, the materiality reflects the UCLA campus. This connects the contemporary style of the training facility with the historical buildings present.

ENVELOPE: BRICK The bottom portion of the building utilizes brick as a means to connect the contemporary building with the more historical buildings on campus. Brick is also scaled for the human.

Therefore, this provides a more welcoming scale for those walking past the building to other sports facilities. There is a social desire for the design, as well. The main lobby and surrounding courtyard are meant as a meeting place for the entire campus and visitors.

Utilizing brick helps create a more welcoming and friendly environment.

4_PERCEPTION AND PERFORMANCE

Energy Model

ENERGY PERFORMANCE The EUI, according to Zero Tool, should be at 14 EUI or less. The building is currently at 13 EUI. Therefore, the design has done an efficient job in regards to respecting the climate. Located in Los Angeles, the climate is mostly warm with little rain. The building only provides one option for ventilation in the weight room located on Level 1 where there are 3 large sets of garage doors.

This is appropriate, for the main source of internal heat gain comes from this area. The workout use is scheduled. Therefore, this source is controlled. The walls located on the West, North, and South sides of the buildings are insulated in order to limit external heat gain. The East side has two horizontal and vertical extensions that help keep the large windows shaded. There are also glass louvers spanning the height of the large windows looking over the practice fields. This allows the line of sight to be consistent but blocks excess heat from entering the building.

Daylight Model

DAYLIGHTING PERFORMANCE The majority of glazing is located on the East side of the building, overlooking two football fields where practices are held. On all other sides, there is little glazing. This is efficient for lighting the front workout areas but inefficient for coach offices, lounges, and meeting areas. Some windows are provided for the offices, but they are located on the West side, thus allowing in sunlight. The only shading provided for these windows are two vertical louvers that are located away from the windows and short horizontal louvers. Glass vertical louvers are provided to help lessen direct heat gain for the top floor offices, but those located on the ground floor rely on shading from surrounding buildings, which are not in close proximity.

THERMAL AND VENTILATION SYSTEMS Thermal comfort is provided through both passive and active strategies. Due to the needs of a training facility, ventilation was critical. Appropriate ventilation is achieved through operable windows and large fans to keep the air circulated. The more private areas, like the lounges and offices, are provided fresh air through air ducts as displayed in 4.2. The building is further cooled with chilled beams. This in addition with ventiltion provides the most efficient comfort for the users who vary from young college athletes to adult coaches and visitors.

The floor is also radiant and utilizes the large amount of sunlight from the East facade.

5_REFERENCES AND REFLECTION REFLECTION Through analysis of the UCLA Wasserman Football Training Center, we were able to better understand the programing of an athletic facility that services a specific campus population.

This building was able to inform our studio project through considerations such as materiality, place, and function. Our studio project consisted of many of the same elements, such as the program, unique location, and requirements for a higher education building.

The circulation and mix of open and closed spaces strongly connected to our design, as well.

Through analyzing how ZGF dealt with program and how the building acted as a gateway to the neighboring sports facilities, we now understand how critical these elements are to the structure’s impact on the users.

We also observed examples of how energy can be harnessed and utilized on site. Additionally, the building took advantage of local resources to work towards larger goals set by city and state jurisdictions. This includes being able to source water locally by 2050 and having net zero carbon by 2030. Our studio project needed to meet similar expectations. Therfore, we utilized many of the same passive strategy techniques in regards to shading, ventilation, and heating/cooling methods. Some of the strategies the architects wanted to impliment also influenced the choices we made in our studio project, such as water management.

Analyzing this building, overall, allowed us to explore an effective precedent to the strategies and information provided during lectures. The knowledge that we gained during this process supercedes what we could have learned through smaller exercises. Having the opportunity to apply these techniques while learning about them also greatly impacted our understanding.
