BACK TO BUSINESS

Home Instead:

A Haven of Compassion and Support for Calgary’s Seniors In Calgary, a city known for its dynamic energy and thriving communities, there is a growing need for compassionate care for its aging population. Home Instead, founded by nurse Debbie Franchuk and her husband Fred, both CPC Club members, has risen to meet this challenge, offering hope and support for the city’s seniors. 16

The inspiration behind Home Instead’s inception is deeply rooted in Debbie’s experiences as a home care case manager, where she witnessed firsthand the gaps in care within the public system. This realization led to the creation of Home Instead nearly 11 years ago, a venture that has significantly impacted the lives of many seniors in Calgary. Fred Franchuk, co-founder and a key figure in the organization, recently shared on the “Back to Business” podcast his insights into the issues facing the senior community. He emphasized the often-overlooked needs of seniors, stating, “Those seniors are often forgotten about. They’re no longer

a strong voice in social circles... but that’s different at Home Instead.” His words shed light on the societal tendency to overlook older adults, a concern Home Instead is actively addressing. Home Instead’s approach is not just about providing essential services; it’s about understanding each individual’s unique needs and preferences. For example, Fred recounts the story of a client with memory loss, a former architect, who found joy and connection in visiting his past projects. This personalized care approach reflects Home Instead’s commitment to enriching the lives of seniors, not just meeting their basic needs.

Club Connections / Winter 2024

CALGARY PETROLEUM CLUB

With the recent holiday season passed, Fred’s message of inclusivity and understanding remains poignant: “Be real... recognize that you can do something about that. You can get some support.” This sentiment aligns perfectly with Home Instead’s ethos, offering a sanctuary where seniors can live their twilight years with joy, respect, and dignity.

The organization has also embraced technology to enhance its services. Fred explained how geo-targeting and real-time activity charts keep families informed, providing peace of mind and a sense of connection despite physical distances. This innovative use of technology in elder care is a testament to Home Instead’s forward-thinking approach.

Building on its mission, Home Instead caters to seniors’ physical needs and addresses the emotional and social aspects crucial to their well-being. Fred spoke passionately about keeping seniors engaged and connected with their community. He shared heartwarming stories of seniors rediscovering joys in activities they once loved, facilitated by Home Instead’s caregivers. These stories aren’t just anecdotes; they’re a testament to the profound impact personalized care can have on the quality of life for seniors.

Home Instead’s mission extends beyond the traditional care model, as illustrated by Fred’s discussion on the podcast. He highlighted the cost-effectiveness of their services, emphasizing the importance of allowing seniors to stay in their homes. This approach is economically beneficial and respects the seniors’ desires and emotional well-being.

The role of Home Instead in the community goes beyond caregiving; it’s about creating a sustainable support system for families. Fred discussed the challenges the ‘sandwich generation’ faces- adults caught between caring for their aging parents and raising their own children. By providing reliable and empathetic care, Home Instead eases the burden on these families, allowing them to find a balance in their lives. This support is invaluable, as it helps the seniors and provides relief and peace of mind to their families.

The organization’s flexible and adaptive services range from simple tasks like housekeeping to more intensive, hands-on care, showing their commitment to meeting the diverse needs of the senior community.

Home Instead also actively advocates for seniors’ rights and works towards systemic changes in elder care. Fred mentioned their efforts to engage policymakers to reallocate funding to make in-home care

CALGARY PETROLEUM CLUB

more accessible and affordable. This advocacy work is crucial, as it benefits Home Instead’s clients and contributes to broader societal change, ensuring that all seniors have the opportunity to live their later years with dignity and respect. Home Instead’s impact in Calgary is a reminder that care and compassion can make a significant difference in the lives of our elders, ensuring they remain an integral and cherished part of our community.Their work is a shining example of how empathy, innovation, and a deep understanding of the community can lead to meaningful change and support for one of our society’s most deserving yet often overlooked segments. You can find Fred franchuk’s full interview on Calgary Petroleum Club’s Back to Business podcast.

Fred Franchuk, co-founder and managing partner of Home Instead Calgary, is a passionate entrepreneur and advocate for senior care. Uniting for a Hunger-Free Future: Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids In Calgary, the growing challenge of food insecurity among children has become a pressing issue, with one in four kids facing uncertain access to nutritious meals. Tackling this critical issue, Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) has been at the forefront during holiday fundraisers and throughout the year to eradicate child hunger and bolster school nutrition programs.

22

Bethany Ross, the Executive Director of BB4CK, sheds light on this escalating crisis. “The rising cost of living is hitting families hard, and when basic expenses like rent and utilities increase, food budgets are often the first to be slashed,” she explains. According to Statistics Canada, the impact of this financial squeeze is evident in Calgary’s distinction as the city with the highest living costs among major Canadian cities. Ross further explains the domino effect of food insecurity on Calgary’s youth. “When children come to school hungry, it’s not just their stomachs that suffer. Their ability to learn, socialize, and engage meaningfully in school activities is significantly compromised,” she emphasizes. BB4CK has risen as a vital community pillar in this fight against child hunger. Operating

over 25 satellite kitchens powered by the dedication of 600 weekly volunteers, the organization provides more than 6,500 daily lunches across nearly 250 schools. This response has grown substantially, with an 18% increase in meal demand over the past year and a staggering 75% since the fall of 2020. Ross underscores the critical role of BB4CK in bridging the nutritional gap for these children. “Our work goes beyond filling lunch boxes. It’s about ensuring that every child has the energy and opportunity to be fully present and active in their learning environment,” she states. The BB4CK community is a diverse and dynamic force, encompassing parents, volunteers, teachers, school staff, community leaders, donors, and children. This collaborative spirit is pivotal in sustaining BB4CK’s mission to connect and inspire individuals to take meaningful action in caring for kids.

Club Connections / Winter 2024

CALGARY PETROLEUM CLUB

“We see every day how a simple act of providing a lunch can transform a child’s day. It’s not just food; it’s a message that they are cared for and not alone,” Ross shares. These meals are more than sustenance; they are symbols of hope and community solidarity. Beyond the preparation and distribution of meals, BB4CK thrives on the active participation of the Calgary community. There are numerous ways for individuals and businesses to get involved and make a tangible difference. People can volunteer their time in one of the many kitchens across the city, helping prepare nutritious lunches. Corporations can engage in partnerships, like sponsoring specific menu items or organizing food drives. Financial donations are always crucial, allowing BB4CK to purchase fresh ingredients and maintain their kitchen operations. Every contribution, whether it’s time, resources, or financial support, plays a vital role in ensuring that no child in Calgary faces their school day on an empty stomach.” Looking forward, BB4CK remains steadfast in its purpose: creating accessible, dignified pathways to nutritious food responsive to the evolving needs of Calgary’s children. This involves an ongoing dialogue with the families and kids in their programs, ensuring their voices and experiences shape the support provided. In reflection, Ross brings to light the broader vision that drives BB4CK, “Our ultimate goal is a future where no child in Calgary goes to school hungry. It’s a vision that requires continuous effort and commitment from everyone in the community.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the

CALGARY PETROLEUM CLUB

BB4CK family as they tirelessly work towards a future where food security is a given, not a privilege, for every child. As BB4CK continues its crucial work beyond the holiday season and into the new year, the organization stands as a testament to the collective power of community action. It’s a beacon of hope, not just for the children it feeds but also for the city it serves. It demonstrates that a hungerfree future for Calgary’s children is a dream and an achievable reality. Further illuminating these challenges and BB4CK’s dedicated response, Bethany Ross was a recent guest on the CPC Back to Business podcast. Her engaging discussion on the podcast offered valuable insights into the organization’s strategies and the crucial role of community support in tackling child food insecurity. Ross’s appearance on the podcast underscores the importance of open dialogue and awareness in addressing such critical social issues. With BB4CK’s mission firmly rooted in the heart of Calgary, Ross’s closing words on the podcast resonate deeply: “Our ultimate goal is a future where no child in Calgary goes to school hungry. It’s a vision that requires continuous effort and

commitment from everyone in the community.” You can catch Bethany Ross’s full interview on Calgary Petroleum Club’s Back to Business podcast And, when you order the CPC Hand Battered Fish & Chips, the Club makes a donation to Feeding Futures.

Bethany Ross is the Executive Director of Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK), a vital organization combating child food insecurity in Calgary. With a passion for community and a focus on nurturing connections, she leads efforts to ensure every child has access to nutritious meals, fostering a future where no child goes hungry.
