Mannum Celebration Day “What a fantastic day!” irsty MacGregor, of the Murraylands Tourist Association (MTA), made this assessment of Mannum Celebration Day, held on Sunday 31st October. She went on: “The turnout was fantastic. Many who came were non-locals. Everybody enjoyed themselves and made new friends or got reacquainted with old ones.” The celebration coincided with the anniversary of the “Back to Mannum” event held in 1933, when the Sojourner, a vessel built by Theo Furler in Goolwa at the height of the Depression, was launched. The wreck of the Sojourner appeared just north of Mannum in 2008, when the water

Renewal. The grant made possible all the free attractions and activities: face painting, Jester cruises, giant’s chess, snakes-n-ladders, canoe hire, dominoes, Lions’ sausage sizzle, drinks from the rowing club bar; the list goes on and on. Those who had time were able to visit the Dock Museum, the Gem and Mineral Gallery, Baseby Cottage and the Old Ways and Old Days Museum. The culmination of the celebrations was a Jester cruise during which a presentation was made to the family of Theo Furler, in recognition of their famous forebear. And in keeping with the theme, a painting of the Sojourner was presented to the Mannum Dock Museum. The painter was Barrie Walker, who worked from the only existing photograph of the Sojourner. Barrie took up painting as a hobby after retiring from a career in the bank. In addition, the day provided the perfect opportunity to launch a new canoe trail on the River. keen canoeists can find the two wrecks near Mannum, the Sojourner and the Saddler, or go further, even as far as Caloote, Zadow’s Landing, Lachlan and Taryn Sochacki and the Ponde of Two Wells playing Cliffs, if they are snakes-n-ladders so inclined. Jennie Whitehorn, also a member of the MTA, echoed Kirsty’s enthusiasm: “What a wonderful day of community celebration! The grant enabled us to give something Nathalia Mountford back to the community for the support they have shown to us.” Thank you, Kirsty and Jennie and the rest of MTA and everyone else involved, for your efforts in making this such a great day of celebration of our town. And the unofficial motto of the MTA is: How we adapt to our changing river environment will be how we are remembered in time to come. Carl Gross
