CALIFORNIA MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION

2023 - 2027
The California Music Educators Association (CMEA) is a Federated unit of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Membership is open to all music educators working in public and private schools, colleges, and universities in California.
We believe … music is for all California students. Students must have access to an equitable, inclusive opportunity to learn, participate, and experience the joy and empowerment that music brings.
… music education must provide opportunities for all students to create, perform, respond, and connect to music. Through our diverse instructional approaches, we can provide experiences that aid in social harmony, critical consciousness, and student agency.
We believe … in taking all practical and appropriate action, individually and collectively, to achieve as outlined in the purposes of the association, as stated in the CMEA By-laws, which are:
• to promote access to a sequential standards-based music education for all Pre K through Grade 12 students taught by fully qualified music educators;
• to support new and improve existing music programs;
• to promote quality pre-service and in-service teacher preparation programs; and,
• to create a greater awareness of the value of music education through partnerships with other associations and advocacy among state and local agencies.
We believe …
… strong partnerships with regional and statewide music education organizations, higher education, arts educators, parents, families, communities, and additional contributors are essential for organizational and student success.
we are individually and organizationally strengthened by working together to promote music, music education, and support policies and practices that build a better society for all.
We believe …
… music encompasses both established and emerging expressive musical practices.
… music education must acknowledge and honor musical traditions, and embrace culturally responsive, relevant, sustaining, and asset-based pedagogies that reflect the people, places, and practices of local, regional, and global communities.
All California students have equitable access to UTK12 music education that embraces diverse and inclusive music-making throughout California.
