For 2020, Scotland celebrates its Coasts and Waters with a year - long programme of events and activities which will shine a spotlight on these vital elements of the Scottish landscape.

From Scotland’s beautiful natural features including coasts, lochs and rivers to the creation of the national drink whisky, Scotland’s Coasts and Waters has shaped the country’s culture, its stories and the way of life.

2020 coach fares and entrance fees for the featured Tours and Cruises have been agreed with the Scottish Government and third party attraction providers - whilst passenger fares have been estimated in order to provide you with an idea of likely costs (actual passenger fares won’t be known about until the end of 2019) I hope you will be enthused and influenced by the content of the following pages and we look forward to seeing you on our vessels in 2020.

Tour to the Isle of Bute

Truly a house of firsts, Mount Stuart is believed to be the first home in the world to have a heated indoor swimming pool and the first in Scotland to be purpose built with electric light, central heating, a telephone system and a Victorian passenger lift.

Most of which are, quite remarkably, still in use today.

Mount Stuart is one of Scotland’s most spectacular Victorian Gothic mansions and one of the world’s great houses. Stunning architecture and fantastic interiors reflect the 3rd Marquess of Bute’s interests, passions and vivid imagination.

This circular tour from the Central Belt encompasses some of the most outstanding scenery that Scotland has to offer along the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond and through the Arrochar Alps to the shores of Loch Fyne. The Isle of Bute is accessed by the short ferry crossing from Colintraive to Rhubodach.

Tour Route

Return to Central Belt is from the picturesque seaside town of Rothesay via the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Wemyss Bay. Onboard, all tour customers will receive a complimentary cup of tea/coffee and slice of cake.

Caledonian MacBrayne, in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, are offering Travel Trade customers a memorable day out that combines the exhilarating experience of ferry travel to an island with a visit to one of Scotland’s best known castles.

The quintessential Victorian ‘Highland’ estate, Brodick Castle, Garden & Country Park on the Isle of Arran is the perfect place for a day trip by coach. Dramatically set against the backdrop of Goatfell, the grand red sandstone Scottish baronialstyle castle has stunning views over Brodick Bay to the Firth of Clyde.

Brodick Castle is packed full of treasures too - it’s renowned for its impressive collections of period furniture, silverware, porcelain, paintings and sporting trophies.

No trip to Arran would be complete without a tour around the island when there is the opportunity for your customers to take in the breath taking seascapes over to Kintyre and south towards the volcanic plug that is known as Ailsa Craig.

Tour to the Island of Gigha

The community owned island of Gigha is home to the world famous Achamore Gardens. The garden extends to approximately 54 acres of natural woodlands and contains a large walled garden, pond area and many rare and interesting plants and trees growing in the frost-free climate, as well as rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias.

Gigha lies just over 3 miles from the Mull of Kintyre. It is reached in 20 minutes from the slip at Tayinloan located a short coach ride from the bustling village of Tarbert - known for its fishing community and busy yachting marina.

In March 2002 the island population (currently numbering 110) managed, with help from grants and loans from the National Lottery and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, to purchase the island for ÂŁ4 million - one of the first community buyouts in Scotland.

Tour to the Isle of Islay

‘The Queen of the Hebrides’, Islay is known for its mild climate and rich peaty soil making it ideal for recreating whisky. It’s home to no fewer than eight distilleries.

Bruichladdich is a distillery on the Rhinns of the Isle of Islay. The distillery produces mainly single malt Scotch whisky but also offers artisanal gin.

The distillery was founded in 1881 and after a somewhat turbulent past the whole distillery was dismantled and reassembled between January and May 2001 with the original Victorian décor and equipment being retained. No computers are used in production with all processes controlled by a pool of skilled artisans who pass on information orally and largely measure progress using dipsticks and simple flotation devices.

All the distillery’s whiskies are sold as single malts, with those designated Bruichladdich being unpeated, those designated Port Charlotte being heavily peated and those designated Octomore being super-heavily peated. Octomore is considered to be ‘the most heavily peated single malt whisky in the world’.

The distillery’s commitment to Islay has resulted in the creation of an islandbased management and administrative system, including the construction of the island’s only commercially scaled bottling hall. The company is the largest private employer on Islay with around sixty jobs on the island.

Tarbert and Loch Fyne

From Oban, this tour visits the fabulous National Trust for Scotland Garden at Arduaine. This wonderful coastal garden forms a horticultural tour around the temperate world with a collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias, Blue Tibetan poppies, giant Himalayan lilies and Chatham Island forget-me-nots.

Arduaine Garden is a tranquil green oasis on the south slope of the Arduaine peninsula on the west coast, south of Oban, with something to see every day of the year.

After leaving Arduaine, the tour moves south to the village of Tarbert on Loch Fyne. This busy little fishing port has a lot to attract visitors not least of which is the stunning scenery the quirky art galleries and numerous restaurants.

Tour Route

Having crossed Loch Fyne from Tarbert onboard the one of the world’s first battery powered ferries, the tour takes the journey to the viewpoint overlooking the Kyles of Bute (designated as a National Scenic Area).

The return to Oban is via Glen Daruel, Strachur, the shores of Loch Fyne, Inveraray and the shores of Loch Awe.

Tour 6 Sound of Mull Sight Seeing Sail This sail starts in Oban with customers joining the MV Isle of Mull on the 45 minute crossing to Mull.

After departing Oban Bay the vessel sails past Maiden Island to starboard and the Isle of Kerrara to port. The David Hutcheson Memorial - one of the founders of Caledonian MacBrayne on Kerrara can be seen at this point.

En route, the views to the north include the island of Lismore and the Nevis Range whilst to the south the Garvellach Islands are clearly visible. Sealife and birdlife is abundant on the sail with porpoises often being seen in the area of the Lismore Lighthouse along with gannets, guillemots and cormorants.

In the distance, Duart Castle comes into view. Duart Castle stands on a crag at the end of the peninsular jutting out into the Sound of Mull at the intersection of the Sound of Mull, Loch Linnhe and the Firth of Lorne and within view of the neighbouring castles of Dunstaffnage, Dunollie, Aros and Ardtornish, part of a chain of castles up the Sound of Mull to Mingary Castle.

The vessel arrives at Craignure - the main port on the Isle of Mull. After a quick turnaround (when sail passengers remain onboard) the vessel makes its way back to Oban.

Fingal’s Cave

As part of this offer, sail passengers are provided with soup and a roll from the Mariners Café on board. For this reason, tour operators are recommended to book the midday departure from Oban returning just after two hours later.

Tour to the Isle of Mull

For coach/tour operators based in Oban, Ballachulish and Fort William Duart Castle or Caisteal Dhubhairt in Scottish Gaelic is the main castle on the Isle of Mull. The castle dates back to the 13th century and is the seat of Clan MacLean.

The castle stands on a crag at the end of the peninsular jutting out into the Sound of Mull at the intersection of the sound of Mull, Loch Linnhe and the Firth of Lorne and within view of the neighbouring castles of Dunstaffnage, Dunollie, Aros and Ardtornish, part of a chain of castles up the Sound of Mull to Mingary Castle.

This circular tour, which can be operated from any point on the route e.g. Oban, Fort William, and Ballachulish - incorporates some of the most spectacular panoramas on the West Coast of Scotland - including the wild ruggedness of Morvern, the benign shoreline of Loch Linnhe and the majestic seascapes around the Firth of Lorne.

Return to the mainland is via the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry either at Fishnish (if travelling in the direction of Fort William) or Craignure (if travelling in the direction of Oban).

Tour to the Isles of Mull, Staffa and Iona

This is one of the best day tours in Scotland, providing a scenic route through the beautiful island of Mull and a visit to the island of Iona.

The highlight of this tour is the awe inspiring visit to the unique island of Staffa to see the hexagonally jointed columns of basalt as well as Fingals Cave - it was made famous the world over by Felix Mendelsohn in 1830 when he composed the Hebrides Overture.

From Oban, the tour crosses the Firth of Lorne to Craignure on Mull.

The scenic route through the island is via Glen More to Fionnphort where a small ferry - operated by Gordon Grant Marine departs for Staffa. After cruising to Staffa and allowing an hour ashore (subject to landing conditions) the vessel sails south to Iona which is known for its tranquillity, its Abbey and the burial place of Scottish Kings.

The return to Fionnphort is onboard the Caledonian MacBrayne vessel, MV Loch Buie which only takes 10 minutes to cross the Sound of Iona. Return to Oban in the afternoon via Fionnphort, Glen More and Craignure.

Tour to the Isle of Rum

Kinloch Castle is a late Victorian mansion located on the Isle of Rum one of the Small Isles off the west coast of Scotland. It was built as a private residence for Sir George Bullough, a textile tycoon from Lancashire whose father bought Rum as his summer residence and shooting estate. Construction began in 1897, and was completed in 1900.

Built as a luxurious retreat the Castle contains a multitude of fascinating artifacts and unique features. The castle and island are now owned by Scottish National Heritage - the castle being featured in the BBC programme ‘Restoration’ in 2003.

The ferry journey to Rum is one of the most scenic on the west coast of Scotland with views of all the Small Isles, the Cuillin Hills on Skye and on many occasions a chance to view some of the local sea life. Dolphins, porpoises and the odd Minke whale abound, whilst gannets, kittiwakes and guillemots are often to be seen.

Tour to the Isle of Raasay

The island of Raasay is located just off the coast of Skye. It can be reached by ferry from Sconser (on Skye). I has a population of circa 200 folk most of whom are engaged in crofting, fishing or working at the Distillery.

Isle of Raasay Distillery is owned by R&B Distilleries and is the newest distillery on the West Coast of Scotland.

The distillery is based on the site of the former disused hotel called Borodale House on the South West of the island. R&B Distillers started its operations at Raasay in September 2017 after receiving its distillers licence. The water used during the distilling process in the production of whisky comes from a Celtic Iron Age well. The water has a high mineral content derived from the island’s volcanic and sandstone rock.

Tour Route

The spirit is distilled in copper pot stills and is matured at the distillery on Raasay in a variety of oak casks. The distillery will produce approximately 150,000 bottles of Scotch per year. The flagship brand is Isle of Raasay Single Malt Scotch Whisky and will be ready to drink in 2020.

The distillery visitor centre was opened in january 2018 and was subsequently given a 5 star tourist attraction award by Visit Scotland in June 2018.

ONBOARD SERVICES

Your customer’s holiday begins with CalMac so they can refuel, re-stock or simply relax and recharge - whatever way your customer intends to spend their journey time, our onboard services offer something for everyone.

Services vary on our ferries to suit the length of the journey, be it a five-minute crossing, a leisurely seven-hour sail or something in between.

CalMac are proud to become the first ferry operator in Scotland to receive the Taste our Best accreditation by Visit Scotland and are working hard to maintain the fresh quality of our ingredients and develop our menus which are rich in local provenance.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS We understand that many of our passengers may have special dietary requirements. If you do have special dietary requirements, please do speak to a member of our staff on board or contact us prior to your sailing by emailing: retailoperations@calmac.co.uk

MARINERS CAFETERIA Best for hot and cold main meals

Throughout the day, our Mariners Cafeterias (available on our larger ferries) provide freshly prepared meals, which champion locally sourced and traceable food and drink. Start your day the CalMac way with one of our traditional Scottish Breakfasts, or a bagel with Scottish smoked salmon and scrambled egg - served until 11am. Later in the day, enjoy some of the dishes that are firm favourites with our regular customers including, Cullen Skink Pie made with Scottish smoked and un-smoked haddock in a creamy leek sauce. We still offer our now legendary CalMac and Cheese made with Mull of Kintyre Cheddar. All of our Mariners Cafeterias have been awarded VisitScotland taste our Best Accreditation and a Healthy Living Award.

THE BAR Best for local whiskies and ales

Tour Route

The Still offers a fantastic choice of local whiskies, ales and spirits, and is available from 11am on our larger ferries. Sample a tipple associated with the island you are travelling to. The bar also serves a selection of light snacks, as well as tea and coffee. It’s the perfect place to relax as you cruise to your destination.

COFFEE CABIN Best for quick snacks

The Coffee Cabin is available on our smaller ferries and its the perfect pitstop for a range of teas, coffees, soft drinks, snacks, breakfast rolls, soup and sandwiches. Whilst you’re in the Cabin you can peruse a range of fabulous island produce, gifts and souvenirs. It’s a perfect place to refuel or pick up some last minute gifts and treats.
