As Volume 50 of The Oracle comes to a close, it has left me reflecting on not just my time on staff, but my high school career. In my four years on the newspaper staff this is my Savannah Wells last story, my last editors meeting and, hopefully, my last newspaper cycle crisis, too. Going throughout all of high school as a staff member has given me an unexplainable feeling of accomplishment and involvement. Whether it was writing a story for A&E, making a DIY for the website, or taking event photos at tennis matches, much like others can say a sport was where their high school memories were made, The Oracle was home to mine.

One notable change made to the paper as the school year finishes up is that the usual order of sections has been split in half. My senior staff members created the entire first half of the paper, the rest following was made from the underclassmen staff, giving way to the new editors of next year. Seeing their leadership in action over the past few weeks has given me the feeling that Newspaper will be in good hands next year.

A NEW CHAPTER Beloved newspaper adviser Caroline Emerick leaves staff

B

alancing a career as a teacher and mother is no easy task. But doing both on top of advising a IHSPA award winning school publications class is also just as challenging. After five years of working in Columbus, English teacher and adviser Jordan Callison is leaving East and BCSC in pursuit of a new career in marketing.

“I’ve wanted to be a teacher ever since I was in high school,” Callison said. “It’s been bittersweet realizing that what I always dreamed of doing is not what I’m ending up doing forever.”

Making the transition to a new role is not just something Callison is facing. Teachers everywhere are making the move from education to another place in the workforce. One driving factor of this transition was the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Teaching is a lot of give, and many people in the profession are realizing they aren’t able or willing to give everything that is required in sacrifice of their mental health,” Callison said. “I think COVID opened up a lot of people to that because our workload just multiplied.”

Leaving with the graduating class of 2022, Callison will be taking up a new position much different than teaching. Indiana University has hired Callison as their new campus social media specialist.

“I will be running the social media accounts for a variety of university businesses including the IU auditorium, campus transportation services, residence halls and recreational sports,” Callison said.

Becoming the newspaper adviser influenced Callison in unexpected ways. Taking the position at East that opened up in 2018 created a newfound love for journalism and media for Callison.

“I really love newspaper,” Callison said. “I get really invested in watching what you guys create, and I’m excited to be in the driver’s seat of that, and to not just advise and give support to the creative process, but to actually be doing it myself.”

Despite an exciting future for Callison, it will still be hard to say goodbye.

“We don’t become teachers for the paycheck. We become teachers because of the hearts we have and our drive to help and inspire people,” Callison said. “And I know that my relationships with those people are what I’ll miss the most.”

As the school year comes to an end, The Oracle staff wanted to thank Callison for all the hard work and dedication she has put forth in both her teaching and advising. The Oracle was lucky to have you.

How long have you been at East?

I am finishing my 30th year as a teacher in BCSC and my 28th year at Columbus East.

What brought you to East?

I was the JV men’s soccer coach in 1989 and 1990 and the Varsity coach beginning in 1991. I was hired to teach social studies here when a position became available.

What are your future plans?

After training this summer, I hope to drive a school bus for BCSC next year.

I plan to continue to be the coordinator of the Columbus East Food Pantry and to continue to coach the English and Fine Arts Academic Team.

I look forward to reading for pleasure a lot more, riding my bike all over town and finding new volunteer opportunities.

How long have you been at East?

I have been here for one year.

What brought you to East?

My husband is an alum and I was excited by the opportunity to teach English to high school.

What are your future plans?

Nothing set in stone.

I definitely want to stay in the field of education but just not as a classroom teacher. That might be working with educational technology or working as an instructional designer, building curriculum that teachers can then use themselves.

What brought you to East?

At a time in my career and with a young family, we thought Columbus would be a great place to raise our three kids.

What are your future plans?

I plan to teach privately, judge, and dabble in playing in a few ensembles. This in addition to more golf and travel.

I’ve been at East for three years.

What brought you to East?

My family relocated to Columbus when my husband was stationed at Camp Atterbury.

What are your future plans?

I will be teaching high school English in South Carolina and finishing my doctorate.

A FOND FAREWELL

Several familiar faces of East are leaving with the graduating class this year.

While this is sad news for many, these staff members are moving on to new chapters in their lives. Whether that is with taking a new job position or enjoying retirement, East will have a large staff change for the 22-23 school year. Rooming With an Olympian Two sets of friends from East rooming with each other next year in college Grace Wolter

N

ot only does going to college provide people with an expanded education but also with many new, unique opportunities. From meeting a bunch of new people to experiencing different events, college provides some with the greatest time of their lives.

For those who live on campus, a very important decision that is made before starting college is picking a roommate. Living with someone while in college usually brings those people closer together and they can even get a best friend out of it.

These East students have chosen to room with each other for their freshman year in college.

Katy Jordan and Halle Rose Jordan and Rose will be attending Indiana University in Bloomington next year.

“We came to the decision of rooming with each other because we are super close and always have fun together,” Jordan said.

“There is no drama or issue between us ever.”

IU has over 20 residence halls and student apartment buildings with just under 2,000 students living on campus.

“I’m most excited to room with one of my best friends,” Rose said. “I haven’t really been nervous about anything so far.”

Jayden Peek and Nathan Wettschurack Peek and Wettschurack will be attending Ball State University in Muncie. Ball State has 13 residence halls with about 38% of students living in college-owned, -operated or -affiliated housing.

“I’m excited that it’s someone I know and someone who I trust, not really nervous about anything,” Peek said. “The process was kind of just figuring out we were both going and just talking about [being roommates] since we were already friends.”

Fast Facts: According to Mental Floss, Lee drew upon her own childhood to write the novel; she has an older brother and a father who is a lawyer, like Scout, the main character, does. To Kill a Mockingbird was the second book that Lee wrote, but the first one she got published. It was also adapted into a movie in 1962.

Synopsis: This book takes place in the 1920s. Told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, the story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan is revealed.

Synopsis: This book is told from Scout Finch’s perspective, a young girl living in Maycomb, Alabama with her older brother, Jem, and lawyer father, Atticus. While their father is representing a black man accused of rape, Scout and Jem try to uncover the mystery of their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley.

It was adapted into a film in 2013.

It was adapted into a movie in 2017. Synopsis: This book is about the true experience of author Ishmael Beah; he became a child soldier in a civil war in Sierra Leone at 12 years old. The story starts shortly before he unwillingly becomes a soldier and ends with the start of his new life in the United States.

The Evolution of Newspaper How has the media and news changed throughout the years?

H

umans have always had a way of circulating information and news amongst each other, however, it was not until 1609 that the first newspaper was published, according to Britannica. The United States’ first independent newspaper, The New England Courant, was not published until 1721 by Benjamin Franklin’s older brother, James Franklin.

In the start of the revolutionary war there were 37 independent newspapers amongst the colonies. After the war ended citizens started turning

News outlets have multiple methods for reaching their target audiences including social media apps, podcasts, newsletters, websites, aggregation platforms, and many more.

y the time senior year rolls around, the majority of students are cemented in their usual routines and activities. Many step into leadership roles and know the ins and outs of their club or sport. While this intense dedication is often a positive attribute, the status quo teaches students to avoid stepping out of their comfort zone at the young age of seventeen or eighteen.

Senior Henr y Ho, however, has crossed all sorts of boundaries this year. After creating a new, active lifestyle for himself as his Senior Project, Ho changed up his routine yet again by picking up Men’s Volleyball at East.

Even as the team sets their sights on improving their record this season, they maintain a positive team environment, a feat that constantly proves difficult for many teams under pressure.

“[Senior] Weston [Romine] convinced me to play, and I’ve never played a sport in my life so I think it’s a good opportunity to have some fun with my friends,” Ho said.

Ho, looking for a fun way to end his senior year, signed up for the challenge. With no experience participating in a team sport, Ho had a lot of ground to cover in the first few weeks of practice in order to get up to speed.

“I think the funniest thing when I first started, I couldn’t serve the ball overhand and it was pretty embarrassing because everyone else could do it but me.” Ho said.

Despite being a newcomer as a senior, Ho stays motivated by the desire to make the season a success for his fellow teammates who have been

“From here on out we are only going to get better and start winning more games and hopefully give Weston a good senior season,” Ho said. “He’s told me that he has had a losing record every year he has played so I want to make this season memorable for him.”

“There are no conflicting views, we are all there to have fun. We take it seriously, but we are a pretty relaxed team,” Ho said.

Ho is a prime example of the importance of branching out and leaving stereotypes behind, especially for the sake of having fun.

“As someone who never played a sport in their life, and as someone who most people considered unathletic, volleyball is a great sport to play,” Ho said. “I think it’s good to go out of my own comfort zone.”

Above all else, Ho learned that embarking on a new adventure is much simpler than many people believe.

“I think if there is an opportunity to do something, take it,” Ho said.

For this issue, my spread was about Mrs. Gonsior taking over as social studies chair member and senior Adrian Alveraz’s life story, which explains how he got to East. I really had a lot of fun with this spread and playing around with the effect of the photos. I wanted to make the photos the highlight of the spread. I also used a sidebar within my design to highlight other chair members of East.

I wrote “Florida Protests” to detail the change that is happening in the state. The “Don’t Say Gay” bill is a controversial government piece turned law that many disgaree on. My second story “Get Hungry Columbus!” highlights the two new restaurant locations coming to town that are sure to get students more excited for the summer months.

ith the end of the school year quickly approaching, the time for The Oracle’s underclassmen to step up into leadership positions is now. This final issue of The Oracle is split in half between the senior staff and underclassmen, so that seniors have time for some final goodbyes to the school and newspaper and so underclassmen can learn the necessary knowledge to be leaders for the next year.

The Oracle staff decided collectively to not do a cover for this issue, so that both groups were ensured enough room in the issue to fully be able to write and design quality stories, without the burden of making sure that two different covers fit inside the issue. This temporary removal of cover allows for more stories to get fully fleshed out and gives more space to our amazing writers to make the best stories that they can.

Because the mask mandate is now gone and active cases are getting lower and lower, it looks as though the school will be completely back to normal next year, for the first time since the 2018-2019 school year.

New food franchises coming to Columbus

T

he excitement that covered Columbus over having two new Dunkin’ Donuts and a Just Wings has died down since early 2022. However, the quiet did not last long. Recently, two new franchises have been announced to be the next food establishments in town.

Sonic

Jaggers

Known for the notorious drive-in style and carhops on roller skates, the Sonic fast food chain has ranked up popularity with its unique experience. Serving drinks with creative takes, Sonic has released creations such as Pickle Juice slush, Blue Coconut slush, Frozen Sweet Tea, and Powerade Mountain Berry Blast slush.

According to the popular burger joint known as Jaggers, Jaggers is “fresh, authentic, scratch-made food”.

The menu offers a wide range of sandwiches, burgers, and various takes on chicken. From a crispy chicken deluxe and a bacon avocado burger to a black bean veggie burger, the Jaggers menu is appealing to many.

Sonic also features delicious food items, such as corn dogs, hot dogs, popcorn chicken, burgers, and their famous tater tots. The nearest Sonic to Columbus is located in Seymour, so making a nearly 30 minute drive for a Sonic meal or late-night craving can be a stretch. Therefore, a location in Columbus is all the more appealing.

The construction of the Sonic started in late 2021 to early 2022. Located across from Target and on National Road, the setup will rival nearby fast food chains, such as its neighbors Rally’s, McDonalds and Dairy Queen. Since the start of construction, fast progress is being made. There is hope that the restaurant will open before summer, as this is when it will attract the most business.

The new Columbus location was announced a few months after Sonic’s. According to The Republic, “A closed westside restaurant is being demolished to make way for a new, fast-casual venue that could open in late summer.” The destruction of the Lincoln Square Restaurant on Jonathan Moore Pike will be the setup for a local Jaggers, confirmed in late December.

The excitement of two new restaurants coming to Columbus has led to anticipation for the summer. Over the next few months, observations of the two sites will lead to a more accurate opening date. When considering the advancements of its construction, Sonic is predicted to open sooner than Jaggers.

Governer signs “Don’t Say Gay” bill

E

arlier this year, on March 28 2022, Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis signed the “Parental Rights in Education” bill into law. The law states that public school teachers in Florida are banned from holding classroom instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity, according to NPR. The bill specifically reads, "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."

The bill has been controversial since its creation.

Supporters say it gives parents more control over what their child learns in class. Parents are able to determine when and how they explain to their children LGBTQ topics without the subject being exposed in a public school setting. If the policy is violated, parents are also able to sue the school district.

Clay Calvert, a professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law stated that “teachers may legitemtny fear being sued” due to the wide variety of classroom lessons, such as same-sex marriage or the history of the AIDS epidemic.

DeSantis was quoted saying that teaching kindergarten-age kids that “they can be whatever they want” was “inappropriate” for children.

Opponents of the bill-now-made-law has dubbed

it the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. While many critics are part of or supporters of the LGBTQ community, the bill has been described as “deeply disturbing”.

The group also claims the bill’s terms are unfairly targeting the LGBTQ and is “pretending to solve a problem that doesn’t exist,” according to NBC News.

Since its first days, global corporations, major newspapers and Hollywood actors have also weighed in on the bill. One of the most notable rifts is between DeSantic and Disney CEO Bob Chapek.

Quoted in Deadline News, Chapek says his refusal to support the bill is because instead of changing outcomes or decisions, corporate statements, such as the bill, are “often weaponized by one side or the other to further divide and inflame.”

“Simply put, they can be counterproductive and undermine more effective ways to achieve change,” Chapek added.

The future of the controversial law is unknown.

Protestors have flocked the streets of Florida to show opposition to the signing. Signs that read “It’s ok to say gay!” and “God loved all children,” along with many other quotes, show the people of Florida’s standing.

Dancing the Night Away An after prom and educational night

I

t is easy to assume that an after prom party is just a way for teens to make their prom experience last longer, but Turning Point’s Dance Marathon had a different approach.

The after prom event has been running for 22 years, but now there is a twist.

This year, Turning Point’s dance marathon was combined with the after prom previously organized by Columbus Parks and Recreation. The program is offered to high school students grades 9-12 and lasts from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. The party includes prizes, food and dancing.

“Dance marathon, especially merging with after prom into one event, is the ideal circumstance to reinforce healthy relationship education and to remind students of the red flags of dating and domestic abusive behaviors,” Turning Point employee Elisabeth Jones said.

Another special aspect of the Turning Point Dance Marathon is the scholarships they offer. There is a $1,000 scholarship offered to seniors just for attending the event. The Sara Cannon Senior Scholarships are a way for senior attendance to be increased and a special way to honor Cannon’s memory.

“Sara passed away in 2021 from cancer, but she loved to dance and always volunteered at Dance Marathon. She had a true passion for working to break the cycle of violence for the next generation,” Jones said.

Apart from the adult planners, the high school-led planning committee makes sure the party is organized so that everyone can enjoy it.

“We have put out posters as well as had members of the committee spread the word to friends,” planning committee member Erin Walters said. “The event is for grades 9-12 and is offered to schools all around the area so anyone can be included.”

What is Turning Point?

Turning Point is a 45-year-old organization dedicated to preventing domestic violence. Apart from Dance Marathon, they also host events like purse bingo and denim day. The organization also offers a twenty-five-bed shelter for victims of domestic violence. Along with the shelter, Turning Point also has a website, turningpointdv.org, that offers resources for sexual assault, domestic violence and teen dating violence.

A Successful Summer Students traveling and working to stay busy while on break

s students begin to count down the remaining school days, everyone is getting excited to work their summer jobs and participate in various activities. Not every student gets the chance to travel the world during their summer vacation; most spend all their time at work getting in hours they missed during the school year.

On top of making money, sophomore Kaden Mishler is eager for his two family vacations this summer. However, before Mishler leaves, he is going to be spending most of his free time working.

“I’m super excited to go to our cabin in Tennessee and then we’re also going to Washington to hike,” Mishler said.

According to YouthFirst, jobs are beneficial to teenagers. Starting work young gets teenagers ready for adulthood. This includes teaching them valuable life lessons like time management, organizational skills and ways to save money.

For these reasons, sophomore Laird Stidham is currently searching for a summer job.

“Since I left my old job I’ve been looking for something new to do this summer besides hang out at the lake,” Stidham said. “When the school year is over I plan to be working at Menards.”

These students are gaining experience with new people and working on their different capabilities. Among them is junior Sydney Berkemeier.

Though Berkemeier is working a summer job, her work schedule will slow down some as she approaches a fun alternative.

“This summer I’m going to Costa Rica,” Berkemeier said. “We’re going to a plantation field and spending a lot of time at the beach.”

Clearly, boredom won’t be a problem for these students over the summer. Getting away and also working as much as possible gives them a break and something new to do while benefiting their futures.

In the Multiverse of Madness

A

s As the Marvel franchise continues to expand new movies are coming out left and right. The newest to debut is “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” The movie was released May 6.

Characters such as Doctor Strange, Wanda Maximoff, Charles Xavier, and a new character, America Chavez will be featured in the production.

Previous Marvel movies and shows have been dropping hints regarding the movie from “Loki” to “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The idea of a multiverse will hopefully be able to explain some confusing storylines from the franchise, like the multiple spidermen and 616 universes.

“Fans are about to get what they want, but it is not exactly what they expect,” director of the production, Sam Raima said. Since the movie accompanies characters like Wanda Maximoff, her story continues in the movie. More of her pain is shown since losing her world in the Wandavision series. Dr. Strange also develops previous relationships with other characters, as he tries to defeat the villain.

Since the release of the film there are contrasting opinions on its quality. National Republic Radio said, “So, yes, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a mess. As you watch it, you can’t help but imagine that you’re only viewing it through a gauzy scrim of hastily issued, last-minute studio notes and frantically dashedoff memos.” While others find it suitable to the type of movie Sam Raima would produce.

he Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is an annual music event held in Indio, California from April 15-24. The festival attracts more than 250,000 people and many fresh faces from the influencer world, making it one of the most popular events in music.

A look into the festivities Styles wore a rainbow sequined jumpsuit and performed many of his well-known songs, as well as two new songs: “Boyfriends” and “Late Night Talking.” The energy Styles portrayed on stage was unmatched as he danced to every song and thousands of fans screamed back.

Many famous celebrities performed at this year’s Coachella, such as Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion.

According to Style of Life, Coachella has been relevant to celebrity sightings in recent years, causing street-style photographers, media and paparazzi to participate and capture exclusive photos.

Coachella fashion is one of the most showcased aspects of the festival; many people just go for the fun of the festival and to show off outfits.

The old aesthetic used to be bohemian-esque with people wearing flower crowns and other free-spirited clothing. According to Vogue, festival fashion had reached a monumental low this year, with little to no imagination for any of this year’s outfits.

Alongside the music of the festival, art is an important aspect with many commissioned pieces. One of the most memorable art installations tends to be “Spectra,” a seven-story spiral building that is used for photographs.

First commissioned in 2018, the building will possibly be a permanent part of the festival.

Coachella has a nationwide impact every year. Many people from all over the world come in unison to see favorite artists perform. The hype around Coachella keeps people eagerly waiting for the atmosphere of the festival every year.

Taking Advantage Of Advisory Students use advisory for breakfast instead of a resource

A

dvisory is a half hour slot in every BCSC student’s day where they may take a small resource following first mod. However, the district incorporates lesson plans for the period that are time consuming, and oftentimes, boring.

There is no point in coming to advisory if you have to listen to a teacher talk about the proper way to shake hands. For this reason, most teachers abandon the lesson plans altogether. However, a select few still ask their students to participate, despite the fact that others are allowed to use the time as a resource.

Most students agree their workload with credited classes causes them an overwhelming amount of stress. With all that pressure comes the need for a resource time in between classes every day. That is where advisory excels and helps out the student body.

In advisory, I can finish the last two problems of my math homework right before I go to Pre-Calculus. It is a time I use to commute from North to East because I have a first mod C4 class. These advantages make the time a helpful and stress-relieving tool to students.

However, advisory is not an accredited course. In other words, students only have their attendance taken for showing up, and no grades are given. For this reason, many students have decided to skip the class and leave campus. I agree that coffee and McDonald’s sounds a lot more appetizing and worthwhile than attending a class for which I do not receive credit.

Furthermore, if students are caught skipping, they are called down by the deans and lectured. This causes

It is especially unfair that students traveling for C4 have a double standard. While nontraveling students must show up to an advisory for attendance, C4 travelers need time to commute. This means that teachers may decide when to count them in attendance, even if they do not show up, some teachers consider them excused, while some do not.

All in all, advisory has been very helpful to me personally because I commute for C4. However, in the years to come, the period should not exist unless students will receive credit for the lesson plans the district expects them to complete. On top of that, all teachers should hold the same precedent for C4 travelers. Students will most likely continue taking advantage of the time for food instead of resources if no changes are made.

Out With the Old, In Macey Golden With the New New learning platform replacing ItsLearning in fall 2023

n Aug. 2015, ItsLearning was

introduced to BCSC classrooms.

It was the first school year using this online platform, as well as the start of one-to-one laptops. Now, as classrooms are developing, it is time to upgrade. While I personally have no problem with ItsLearning, I am excited for BCSC to implement a new system since there are some issues I have experienced.

“We will begin using the new learning management system (LMS) in the Fall of 2023,” social studies teacher Cassie Gonsior said. “Teachers will be learning how to use the new LMS all throughout the next year.”

The program choices have been narrowed down to either Canvas or Schoology. With the implementation of a new system, there are certain hopes involved. As a student, ItsLearning has been helpful in keeping track of assignments, but there

are also faults.

“I like that it is easy to navigate, but sometimes when I am working it will time me out, and it was hard to learn at first,” freshman Olivia Calhoun said.

“A big complaint that many teachers have had about ItsLearning is that it doesn’t connect to our grade book, so we have to essentially input grades twice, which can be time-consuming,” Gonsior said. “It’s also a lesser-known LMS, so it didn’t always sync up with other technology tools in the way that other LMS would.”

In addition to these challenges, it has been difficult when every teacher would upload assignments differently.

Furthermore, some teachers may use one feature, while others completely leave them out.

With this concern in mind, teachers hope to be able to use a system more developed to their needs. Even though I will no longer be at East when the new system is going to be in use, I am eager for my younger sibling and other students to be able to use it.

ItsLearning became vital over the past couple of years. Teachers, as well as students, have both learned to use the system. Navigating the platform has gotten easier over time, and many students, myself included, have benefited from the program. As we introduce the The Geniune. Right On Track

Gray crushes personal endeavors within her track career

T

he girls track team is off to a great start this year. Leading them in their victories is junior Emma Gray.

“My favorite event is probably 100 hurdles,” Gray said. “I think it’s really fun and a step up from just running a regular 100. It also takes more skill, so it makes me feel even more proud of myself when I win or improve in that event.”

On April 21, Gray won all three events against the Columbus North Varsity girls. These included the 100 m. hurdles (16.39), 100 m. (13.01) and 300 m. hurdles (48.78).

Gray has had a love for running since third grade and started running track in seventh grade. Her first experience with competitive running was Girls On The Run. Girls On The Run is a nonprofit organization, which is an all girls running club that meets in small groups. Apart from the running aspect, valuable life skills are taught and they complete interactive lessons and build confidence.

Not only does Gray enjoy track from an athletic perspective, but her ability to embrace her own sense of self is what keeps her engaged in the sport.

“My favorite thing about track is being able to work on just myself and do my own thing,” Gray said. “I’m a really independent person and track lets me be just that.”

Gray plans to major in business in the future along with continuing track at a college level.

“I would love to continue track in college,” Gray said. “I hope to get a track scholarship and that’s probably how I’ll pick which school I go to. A college I have in mind is Hanover since they have reached out to me about running for them so they are definitely an option.”

The postseason is approaching for the track team and, hopefully, there are many more victories to come. The Olympians hope to have some athletes qualify for the State Championship, held on June 3 at Indiana University.

Gonsior

East teacher takes over social studies department

ollaboration is vital to the success of a school system, and the department chairs are always adapting and reworking collaboration at East. With the recent news of retirement for social studies teacher and department chair Greg Lewis, Cassie Gonsior is stepping up to take the department chair role. Gonsior is currently shadowing and learning more about this position.

The selection process for department chair is similar to most occupations.

“I applied for the position, along with others in the district,” Gonsior said. “There was an interview process with people from both Central and East, and I was the person they selected.”

Gonsior’s love for the classroom has led to her drive to be the new department chair. As she has grown within this de-

partment, adapting to the school environment has been one of the focal points in her teaching career. Therefore, when presented with the opportunity, Gonsior was excited to take it on.

“I have always loved teaching and I really like to switch things up with how I teach and learn new ways to do things,” Gonsior said. “So part of being a department chair is looking for new ideas, and there’s more time to find those strategies and share them with your colleagues. So, that is what interests me the most.”

The main goal for department chairs is to target ways in which they can develop their program to accommodate to needs of all students and teachers. For that reason, chairs gain the ability to adapt to new situations each day.

“The day in the life of a department chair looks different each day depending on what’s going on,” Gonsior said. “I might travel to Central to see what is going on in their classes, I might be observing a teacher as well as working with other administrators here and other department chairs.”

Due to Gonsior being East’s Ethnic Studies teacher, a course in which she delves into topics that tackle present-day social issues, she has set goals which she hopes to implement as she takes on her new position.

“Overall, we’ve all started to understand how important social studies is, so getting teachers confident about talking about changes in the world is important for preparing students for the real world, as we say,” Gonsior said.

All walks of life tend to be completely different Kindred Shafer

O

ne word to describe senior Adrian Alvarez would have to be resilient. The unique journey in which he is embarking on may be peculiar to most teenagers around him. After overcoming medical hardships far from home, Alvarez plans to attend medical school after graduation in the spring.

In the final semester of his last high school year, Alvarez has faced many ongoing tragedies.

“I started to have pain and at one point at three in the morning I couldn’t even move so I went to the emergency room and they told me my appendix has ruptured,” Alvarez said.

“It was extremely painful and I was terrified… then I was told I was septic, so I went back to the hospital for three weeks.”

Chemistry since I really love Chemistry and all that nerdy stuff,” Alvarez said. “For my paper, I wrote about the medical procedures I had, but my teacher said I couldn’t do that so I did animal testing and the pros and cons of it [and] I received a 97%.”

Following an extensive recovery, Alvarez has redirected his focus back to his academic goals. He has always been interested in medical school and plans to one day apply. Alvarez wants to become a neurosurgeon or go into pre-medicine, and plans to go back to New Mexico to pursue his medical career.

Alongside his love of the medical field, Alvarez takes pride in his diverse background. He has lived in both America and Mexico. Alvarez was born and lived in New Mexico for approximately three years, where he learned English, then went to Mexico, until his senior year at East, where he is currently living with his aunt and uncle.

He took many advanced STEM classes, which sparked his interest in medical school as well as ideas for his senior project.

“The rest of my family lives back in Mexico and I don’t really miss them, but I like being alone,” Alvarez said, “It’s very different here in America, but I still really love Mexico and New Mexico since it’s where my whole life used to be.”
