Without a doubt the school spirit of Stamford High School has always been imprinted in the heart of the students and the community. From firsthand experience, there’s nothing like being a student in the stands and cheering on your friends. The stadium lights, the mesmerizing excitement in the air, and the pride you feel in your heart for Stamford all encompass a Football Friday Night.

The Stamford Bulldogs racked up 444 yards through the air Friday night as they flew to a 52-13 victory over the Merkel Badgers of District 4-3A DII in Badger Stadium. Seniors Peyton Bevel and Trace Edwards teamed up for 350 yards and four touchdowns including plays of 95 and 86 yards along the way. Several other big plays were negated by penalty flags.

The Dogs got on the scoreboard on the opening kickoff when Tryce Pape made an ill-advised choice to chase down the football back into the end zone. Lane Patton was there to make the tackle and put the two points for a safety on the board with just one tick off the clock.

Stamford PD Makes Big Bust Over Weekend On August 31, 2018 at approximately 10:45 p.m. officers with the Stamford Police Department conducted a traffic stop on the 500 Block of East Hamilton Street for a Turn Signal Violation. Officers noticed extreme nervousness and conducted a consent search which revealed Drug Paraphernalia. Officers then conducted a more thorough probable cause search and discovered approximately 748 grams of suspected Methamphetamine along with $10,753.20 in US Currency. The suspected

Methamphetamine holds a street value of approximately $37,400.00.

49 year old Ealaundra Harris and 39 year old Angela Crossley were arrested for Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group One More than 400 Grams in a Drug Free Zone. Harris and Crossley had other additional charges.

All contraband was seized. Harris and Crossley were subsequently booked into the Jones County Jail.

Stamford Carnegie Library Awarded Grant for Computer Coding Club

In the Fall of 2009 some of my friends and I decided to promote school spirit at the games and go ALL out.

We called ourselves the Bulldog Babes. We ordered colorful jerseys, used megaphones and made Bulldog blue buckets to bang on during the games. I had always been a cheerleader, and it was awesome to actually sit in the stands and watch the game from

a whole new perspective.

Once again, there’s just nothing like it.

This year, the Bulldog Babes are back again! I had the privilege of interviewing junior, Kenadee Gann, who helped get the group started. She had the idea of promoting more school spirit and started group text messages with some other Stamford students.

They all planned and went to Wal-Mart to buy buckets and paint for the games.

They had an announcement made in the school

morning meeting stating that anyone and everyone is encouraged to join. The Stamford Booster Club got wind of the Bulldog Babes and generously donated funds to the students which helped with shirts and supplies.

Stamford beat Merkel 5213 and the Bulldog Babes were cheering the Bulldogs on the whole game.

Kenadee stated, “We had so much fun! Some people were a little out of their comfort zone, but as the game went on, it got easier.

The Bulldog moms LOVE us, and I feel like we helped the atmosphere of the game.” The Bulldog Babes beat their makeshift drums along with the band and yelled with the cheerleaders. They are all anxious for this week’s game where they can be at their home stadium cheering on their team. Be on the lookout for the group in their grey shirts and be sure to yell along with them to cheer on the Bulldogs!

60th Annual Jones County Fair

The 60th Annual Jones County Fair Livestock Show will be held September 22, 2018 in Anson, Texas.

Livestock Division will be held in the Jones County Show Barns, 803 23rd St., Saturday, September 22nd.

Livestock entries will consist of Cattle, Sheep and Goat. You must be a mem-

ber of the FFA or 4-H organization and be a resident of the State of Texas to enter.

The Stamford Carnegie Library is pleased to announce we have been awarded one of 50 spots, out of 350 applicants nationwide, to participate in the Code Club for Small and Rural Libraries Grant!

The Code Club is a fun and informal program where kids will learn computer programming skills in the library each week, over the next year.

Teaching kids computer programming skills can dramatically impact our community by providing

kids with 21st century career opportunities and instilling a valuable set of life skills, like computational thinking and problem solving. The Code Club will be offered free of charge to kids in 6th12th grades and will begin at the library September 25th, with more details to follow.

The Code Club for Small and Rural Libraries Grant is funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and is administered by the North Dakota State Library, in collaboration with Prenda.

BULLDOGS: Continued From Page 1 The Bulldogs were unable to move the ball after the free kick and the Badgers took over at their own seven following Bevel’s kick. The Badgers used eleven ground plays to move 93 yards for a touchdown. The big play was a 41 yard run by quarterback Jonah White which included the hurdle over Ethan Medina being shown as a featured play of the week. White got the score on a one yard keeper. When the kick failed, the Badgers were up 6-2.

The Dogs mixed runs and passes to move for their first touchdown of the night. Tre Mitchell had runs of two and ten yards with a nice gain on a pass play being negated by the first of eight penalties on the night. Edwards had the big play in the drive with a 30 yard reception to the Badger 19. Two plays later Bevel found Edwards in the end zone for the score. The two seniors also hooked up for the two point conversion to put Stamford up 10-6 with

2:50 left in the first quarter.

The Badgers ran down the clock with their running game which featured Jakob Dearing and Tyrell White-Oneal along with Pape and White. On the last play of the quarter White found White-Oneal with a 26 yard pass to convert a third down and move the ball to the Stamford 33. Rylan Holloway took a lateral from White and went the final five yards for a Badger touchdown. The PAT eased through the up rights and Merkel had a 13-10 lead.

Mitchell took the ensuing kickoff at the 20 and worked across the field for an apparent touchdown. A holding penalty wiped the score off the board and moved the ball back to the Stamford 22.

The Dogs went to the air and Bevel found Josh Mueller on passes of 21 and 32 yards; the latter of which converted a third and ten and pushed the football to the Merkel 25. Bevel kept for nine yards before turning the drive over

to D’Marcus Barber. Barber converted a third and one with a four yard gainer then added a touchdown with a 12 yard carry. Bevel was stopped short on a run attempt for a two point conversion but the Bulldogs had a 16-13 lead – a lead they would not relinquish.

The Bulldog defense forced a three-and-out by the Badgers but the punt rolled dead at the five yard line. The poor field position didn’t bother the Bevel to Edwards connection however. Bevel found Edwards behind a defender at the Stamford 44; the receiver out ran the defender to finish off the 95 yard touchdown play. Zach Duran caught the two point conversion pass to put the Dogs up 24-13.

Merkel stayed on the ground and moved down to a first down just outside the Stamford ten yard line.

Barber caught Dearing for a four yard loss on first down.

White gained back three of those yards on second down and Holloway added four more yards to set up a fourth and seven. White called his own number but was swarmed under for a six yard loss to turn the ball back to the Bulldogs with time running down in the first half.

The Stamford drive was stymied by two penalties so the Bulldogs were content to go into halftime with a 2413 lead and the knowledge that they would receive the second half kickoff.

Duran took the kick at the Stamford 22 and returned it to the Merkel 40. Mitchell broke free for a 28 yard rush to the Badger 12. Bevel kept for two yards but the Dogs were flagged for holding

on his next carry. Edwards caught an eleven yard gainer to leave Blue facing third and seven. Mitchell got the call again and he raced into the end zone. Bevel kept for the two point conversion and a 32-13 Stamford lead.

The ensuing kickoff bounced off a Badger up man right back towards the charging Bulldog defenders.

Mueller covered the football to give Stamford a first down at the Merkel 49. Mitchell ripped off nine yards and an additional 15 yards for a personal foul against the Badgers moved the ball to the 25. Before the Dogs could snap the ball again, they were flagged with a procedure penalty which moved the ball back five yards. Mitchell smothered a high snap but the line of scrimmage now sat at midfield with Stamford facing second and 35.

Edwards and Bevel connected for a 30 yard pass play to put the down-and-distance at a more usual third and five. Barber broke free for 16 yards and a first and goal at the Merkel four. The junior running back converted the touchdown on the next play. A running play for the conversion failed but the lead was 38-13 with 8:21 left in the third quarter.

White-Oneal moved the football down to the Bulldog 43 with a 22 yard run. An incomplete pass and a short gain left the Badgers facing third and eight. White tried a pitch to Dearing but the two didn’t connect and the ball hit the turf. Keyven Mueller recovered to give the Bulldogs the ball at the Stamford 42.

Bevel called his own number and worked across the field for a large gain but, again, a penalty flag was

thrown to push the line of scrimmage back to the 41.

Kaleb Flick was wide open for a 31 yard pass gain to move the ball into Merkel territory.

The drive stalled and the Badgers took over on downs; the Badgers also recovered a Bevel fumble on the play but the recovery was moot because of fourth down.

White kept and ran for 42 yards to open up the Merkel drive and move the football down to the Stamford 36.

White was stopped for no gain on the next play and Holloway got four yards on second down. Two incomplete passes ended the drive and turned the ball back to Stamford.

A personal foul penalty pushed the Dogs back but runs by Bevel and Barber converted for a first down at the Stamford 43. Barber pushed the line to the 50. Bevel tried to hit Edwards one more time but the football was tipped and Pape picked it off for the Badgers.

Three runs by Holloway closed out the third quarter with the Badgers facing fourth and four from the Bulldog 43. White converted for a first down with a 16 yard burst to the Stamford 27. Following an incomplete pass Holloway got the call again but gained just a yard and was shaken up on the play. White passed to Dearing for a six yard gain on third down leaving the Badgers facing fourth and three.

Braiden Sigler got the call but he was stopped short of a first down.

The Bulldogs took over at their own 19. R.J. Smith spun for extra yardage to push the Dogs out to the 34. Mitchell got the next two carries and notched nine yards. Barber managed to keep his bal-

ance for three yards and a Stamford down at their own 47. The next snap sailed over Bevel’s head and he had to chase it down back at the 33.

Mitchell got nine yards back on a pass play but pressure made Bevel throw the next ball away. The Dogs faced fourth and 15; nevertheless the Bevel to Edwards connection worked again for a 58 yard touchdown. Smith added the PAT to up the Bulldog lead to 45-13 with 7:54 left in the game.

White broke up the middle for a 31 yard gain to start the next Merkel drive. Six more running plays followed with Sigler, Dearing and White-Oneal sharing the ball carrying duties to move the ball to the Stamford seven.

White pitched the ball for White-Oneal on the next play but the ball hit the turf and Christian Cardenas recovered for the Bulldogs.

Mitchell gained three yards on first down to move the ball out to the 13. A pass to Smith picked up a yard, Bevel found Edwards at the 43 and the fleet receiver raced the rest of the way into the end zone for the final score of the night. Smith’s PAT pushed the score to 52-13 with just 2:56 left in the game.

The Badgers were unable to earn a first down on the following position so the Bulldogs took over to run out the clock on their opening victory of the 2018 season.

The Bulldogs travel to Roscoe September 7 to face the 0-1 Plowboys. Roscoe lost their opener 49-21 to the Hawley Bearcats.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY By Jewellee Kuenstler This past week, two lovely ladies graced our museum doors. Their story plucked at my heartstrings. They had come a long way to see an item that had belonged to their grandfather. An item that to them, had great sentimental value. This item is housed in our Arledge Field Exhibit.

The Museum opened the Arledge Field Exhibit at the end of June. The exhibit tells the story of Stamford’s role in World War II through the Flight Training Base that was established here in 1941 (currently our airport). One section of the exhibit tells the story of civilians that took jobs at the airfield.

In the early 1940s, our community, and most of Texas, was still feeling the effects of the Depression.

Jobs were hard to find in this rural, mainly agricultural area. Many farms folded during this time. So, when jobs became available, people from all over competed for the chance to work and make money to support their families. In our modern times, where practically everyone has a car, commuting to a job one to two hours away is not much of a stretch. But in 1941, this was a true hardship for many.

So it was for a man named James Thomas “Jim” Stewart.

Stewart was a farmer from Comanche, Texas. Times were lean on the farm and when he was offered a job at the Stamford Flying School at Arledge Field, he leapt at the chance to make some money to pay the mortgage on the farm. But this job came at a sacrifice. He had to leave his wife and four children back home on the farm. No one knew how long the war was going to last, so the jobs were temporary. Stewart rode the bus or train to Stamford, worked during the week, and lived at Kight’s Rooming House. On the weekends he would take a bus or train back to Comanche to see his family. His children remembered that he always brought each of them a candy bar when he came home.

One day while working

at Arledge Field, he saw a wooden airplane propeller that had been thrown on the junk heap. He inquired after it, and was told that due to a crack in the center, it was of no use and was to be used for scrap. Stewart got permission to keep the propeller, and that weekend he made his way home with his, rather large, acquisition.

(If you come by to see the size of this propeller, you’ll understand why every time I imagine this man riding the bus or on a crowded train, carrying this large propeller with him, I can’t help but giggle. Could you imagine the looks he received!)

When Stewart made it home, he put the propeller in a prime location, over the mantle in the living room. As his children grew and had children of their own, the propeller continued to hold its place of honor. And it still holds a place of honor. After the death of Jim Stewart and his wife, and the passing of his four children, the propeller was put on loan by the Stewart Family to the Cowboy Country Museum. Now, as you enter the Arledge Field Exhibit, it is mounted on the wall and is the first thing you see. It is the focal point of our exhibit. It stands as a reminder that soldiers and civilians alike made many sacrifices during World War II. The two ladies were granddaughters of Jim Stewart.

When they saw the propeller, they were so excited. They remembered always seeing it in their grandparents’ house above the mantle. They also found a picture of their grandfather in an Arledge Field Annual. The picture

featured with this article shows these two ladies, Cheryl Doran and Carolyn Daniel with the propeller above them, and holding the picture of their grandfather.

It was such a blessing to be part of this reunion.

Family Night will be on Tuesday, September 18th, 5:30-6:30. This month’s theme is Homecoming. We will present our new Stamford School/Homecoming Exhibit and list all the schools that have consolidated with Stamford ISD through the years. This is also the 52nd Anniversary of desegregation of public schools (yes, we are about 2 years late, sorry).

Come by and see how we have come “together” to create the community we have today.

As we put together this exhibit we find we are sadly lacking in some areas. We need information, pictures, or memories of the Bomar Heights School and the Booker T. Washington School.

So, if you have any information we would love to hear about it.

If you have family or friends that are coming in for Homecoming, please tell them about our new exhibit and tell them to come by.

There will be a place for a photo op, where you and your former classmates can take “cheesy” homecoming pictures. Please spread the word.

BBQ Cook-off Held in Conjunction with the 60th Jones County Fair

BY KIM MILES, CEA-AG./NR The 60th Annual Jones County Fair is bringing back a favorite tradition from the past, the BBQ Cookoff.

The event will be held on September 22nd at the fairgrounds behind the Lawrence Hall Used Car Lot in Anson. For those interested in participating, you can visit our website at jones.agrilife.org. Find the calendar of events and click on the 60th Annual Jones County Fair link to get the forms and information.

The cook-off is sanctioned with the Lone Star BBQ Society and will follow their rules and regulations.

Registration for the cook-off must be returned by September 19th to get the entry fee of $100. After this date, the fee will be $125. Your team will receive a $10 refund for contestants using meat purchased from H E B grocery.

We had a wonderful Old Glory School Homecoming on Saturday at the Community Center with approximately 82 folks in attendance. Put Down the Phone

This week I want to talk about something that I have talked about in the past, yet I was focused on one specific aspect of it instead of looking at the bigger picture. I have talked about people being isolated from each other, being concerned with what was “trending,” or just not communicating enough with each other. I am talking about the overreliance on our cell phones, and I am sure that there are days where you feel the same way. Before I go any further, however, I will state that I have nothing against Will McClure using cell phones, especially for everyday use outside of making calls as I use mine every day to check social media, check news, watch videos, and text friends and family. In fact, I would feel pretty lost without it most days! With that said, however, I also know when to put the phone down from time to time. While it is true that sometimes I find my head buried in the thing, I personally try not to let it control my life. A good example of this recently is when I am at work when the first time I even glance at my phone is during lunch or after school is over. Granted, I’m not going to have it out anyway, but I do not feel the need to grab it in between classes. On the other side, I see people, both students and adults, immediately reach for their phones every chance that they have, missing out on real human connections. I had two minutes left in class one day, and I told my students to talk amongst themselves and about half of the class reached for their cell phones. It was shocking and heartbreaking all at the same time when one would rather stare and type into a phone instead of talking to a real person just a few feet away.

Once again, I am not saying that there is anything wrong with using phones, but I believe that if we do not make a conscious effort to reduce our usage, we will get to a point where we have little to no interaction with each other. I was told, and I even shared, the idea that we need to put our phones down one-third more of the time, thus allowing human relationships to build face-to-face rather than from a small screen. We are very fortunate to live in a world where we can communicate and receive answers to questions in mere seconds, but what happens when this technology is out of our reach? I have seen stories where people did not know how to react when they could not use their cell phones for an extended period of time. It led to boredom first of all, but it also let to major swings in attitude for something so simple. It’s sad, but it is the reality that we live in today.

Our personal cell phones have come a long way from the large, bulky models from the 80s and early 90s to the flip phones to the smartphones we have today. Technology continues to mesmerize us every day and we rely more and more on it with each passing year. However, our reliance on these small devices can lead to unwanted behavior, exposure to negative thoughts and ideas, and even the desire to become popular based on what we do with our phones (see any of my columns covering memes and you will know my feelings on this). All I am saying here is that we need to reteach ourselves to actually speak to one another face-to-face instead of through a text. We could learn so much about each other if we just sat down and talked more instead of being glued to our Facebook or Instagram feeds. We can even use the phones for what they are intended: to make calls and talk to each other. Personally, I would rather hear a friendly voice than read a seemingly emotionless text any day.

The Texas Country Music Hall Of Fame Tommie Ritter Smith of Carthage is kin to legendary country musician Tex Ritter. “Tex and my dad were first cousins,” says Tommie. “Their dads were brothers.” Tommie has been the chamber exec in Carthage since 1982. Her office is in an historic old antebellum home. In the early 1990s Tommie got the idea to start the Tex Ritter Museum upstairs in the chamber building. She gathered a lot of Tex’s memorabilia and put it on display. Tex was born in Panola County. So was Jim Reeves, another giant in country music.

“We think we’re the only county that can lay claim to being the birthplace of two country music hall of famers and international country music stars.” So some Jim Reeves memorabilia was added to the Tex Ritter items.

“In 1997 we started the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame to recognize the importance of country music in the state,” says Tommie. “We began inducting two Texas country musicians every

year. We made a list of 300 when we started and that list keeps growing.”

Every year the induction ceremony turns into a concert featuring big names in country music. The crowds have reached more than 2,000 and the inductions are now held in Carthage High School’s new 15 million dollar performing arts center.

This year’s honorees were Leon Rausch and the original Chuck Wagon Gang.

“The museum was a popular destination but it was upstairs in an old home,” says Tommie.

“We got a group together and approached the city to build a separate museum.” The forward thinking city fathers approved spending two and a half million dollars to fund the project. Since then, another million

and a half dollars were approved for improvements. It has been a good move.

The museum visitors log shows people from every US state and 50 foreign countries.

It’s a state of the art facility with some valuable items on display loaned by families of the inductees.

“They trusted us to take good care of the things they let us display,” says Tommie. “We have 50 displays of Texans that are famous country music stars. We have guitars, cowboy boots and hats, very valuable records and sheet music with the stars’ handwritten notes on them. We have suits

tailored for the stars.” A consultant from Nashville does the displays, making the trip to Carthage three times a year to spruce up the displays and add new ones.

Tommie says people who visit the museum on bus tours get special entertainment. “We have several volunteers that come out to entertain the bus tours. We have a little stage set up and they sing the songs of our inductees. My husband is one of them. I talked him into dressing up like Tex Ritter and singing for bus tours and he does a great job.”

Tommy is amazed at what has happened over the years. “It all started because I wanted to honor Tex Ritter in his hometown and it has escalated way beyond my expectations. I cannot believe we are where we are.”

Temporary Residents God’s Word is never changing and is the same today, tomorrow and forever. From the beginning, His Word held meaning and it will continue to do so until the end (Luke 21:33). Within His Word, we can find the answers to life’s biggest questions. As followers of Christ, we are called not to live like the world but instead to live our lives like children of God (1 John 3:1). This requires devotion, submission and full out surrender. This world we live in is a dark one, but praise the Lord we have been given the light that can never be extinguished (John 8:12).

When I think of persecution, the first thing I think of is terror and punishment. We read in the New Testament that Christians suffered great persecution while spreading the Good News of Christ. And sadly in many parts of the world similar persecution is still going on today. However, in our everyday lives, we are greatly blessed not to have to deal with such great persecution for being a believer. But at the same time being a Christian is not the most popular thing in this day and age.

The more that we seek God the more we will be able to see clearly the Holy Spirit’s work in our life.

There are many ways to see and feel our spiritual growth, but one way I have noticed is through the

world’s reaction. When people know that you are a firm believer and you really carry your cross daily, then there thought process might change about you (2 Cor. 2:15-16). I’ve seen it happen in two ways, the Holy Spirit either draws people to you, because they are curious and want what you have. And when this happens we should always use this as an opportunity to share God’s glorious Grace (Eph. 5:16). The other reaction is that people are completely ashamed of their sins and become convicted when near or around you. Some people might even think you’re crazy (2 Cor. 5:13) and feel uncomfortable when in your presence. This is not because of you necessarily, but it’s the Spirit of God living in you that is bringing their sin to light. And when this happens be encouraged, for you know that your faith is genuine.

When you begin to realize that the world hates you. That’s when you can be reassured that you are truly walking in genuine faith. Jesus says, “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.

The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world.

I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you” (John 15:18-19). Jesus tells us that we will not be popular or like everyone else be-

cause we are following Him. True Christ followers are different than the world; there is a definite separation between them and the world around them. I encourage you to look around and make sure you’re living for God’s Kingdom and not the ungodly society of this world.

As children of the light, we must always carry that light with us. Our witness is so powerful and has great impact on both believers and non-believers alike.

Every moment we get, we should look to bring glory to God’s wonderful name.

Sharing the love of God with others is our duty, and we should not look to win their approval but instead win the approval of our Heavenly Father (Gal. 1:10).

We do this by not conforming to the world but by living for the Kingdom of God. So I encourage you not to try to please the world because the world and Jesus have never gotten along. But share the Truth with this broken world and do everything you do with a loving heart so they might come to know who He is (John 13:35). Your everyday witness and love could determine someone else’s eternal destination. Do not love the world, because we are only temporary residents (1 Pet. 2:11). But instead, share the love of Christ with this broken world. Blessings to you this coming week!

Shop Local Business Spotlight- Mi Familia

BY HOLLY BEARDEN Here at the Stamford American we have started a new Shop Locally promotion package. Our hope is to have our readers and members of the community support small town businesses and therefore, shop locally.

This week our business spotlight will be on Mi Familia Mexican Restaurant.

This week we spoke with Sylvia Martinez, the manager of the establishment.

They are open all week besides Tuesdays, and they serve breakfast 6-11 and lunch and dinner until 9 pm, although, Saturdays and Sundays they close at 10. Mi Familia offers a daily lunch special Monday through Friday and on Fridays and Saturdays their special is Menudo.

They have been at their new location 601 N Swenson for a year last May. Their most popular meal are the fajitas, and boy are

they good! They also serve a great shrimp cocktail and yummy Micheladas!

You can call in an order to go and the drive through makes that extremely convenient.

The employees at Mi Familia are so excited to be a part of the community of Stamford. They love the small town and the regular customers who are like family. Sylvia said, “It’s nice to see someone walk in and I immediately know what

they want or how they like their meal a certain way.

In a big city you can’t do that. It’s nice to know your people.”

At the recent West Texas Rural Summit, drug addiction—causes, challenges, solutions—was a hot topic.

This is a complicated topic that has been on my heart for a while. I hope my readers indulge me as I start a multi-part series on drugs.

If we are serious about addressing this problem in our communities, and we should be, this topic deserves a comprehensive look, not just a summary. As we work to improve our communities—beautify them, bring jobs and amenities, make them more prosperous for all—drugs must be tackled by all of our community leaders.

When we think about drugs in our community, a few easy images come to mind. We think of marijuana. We think of out-oftown dealers selling to our locals. We almost certainly think of people cooking and using meth. Those images are all accurate pieces of the puzzle. But the puzzle itself is far more complicated and concerning.

In the last few years, we’ve heard a lot in the news about America’s “opioid crisis,” but it’s hard to talk about why it matters in our communities without defining it. In short, the opioid crisis is an epidemic of drug abuse, death, and community decay arising from abuse of prescription painkillers known as “opioids.”

Opioids became widely available on a prescription basis in the 1990s,

with recognizable names like OxyContin, Percocet, and Vicodin. Their use has proliferated in shocking ways. A 2017 government study found that Americans consume more opioids than any country in the world.

Enough opioids were prescribed in the U.S. in 2015 to medicate every American around the clock for three weeks. The effects of this usage are horrifying.

According to the CDC, opioid overdoses have quadrupled since 1999. You might think that opioids are a problem, but not in our area. That is not so.

CBS News reported that, in 2015, drug overdoses killed more than 50,000 people in America. That 2017 government study found that TWO-THIRDS of all American drug overdoses came from opioids. CBS noted that drug overdoses kill more Americans than either car accidents or guns.

In only a few decades of widespread use, opioids are now a stunning percentage of American drug use.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the powerful opioid fentanyl is the most widely used opioid in America and causes over half of opioid overdose deaths in America.

Fentanyl can also be made illegally, like meth, and is often mixed with heroin or cocaine for more powerful effects. Much addiction to “hard” drugs follows a path from prescription drugs. According to the USDA, 3 out

of 4 heroin users began with prescription drugs.

Drugs are a shocking problem in America, but here’s the sobering reality.

When 2/3 of drug overdoses come from opioids, drug addiction isn’t the result of some wealthy foreign kingpin straight out of a 1980s movie. The causes are much closer to home, and much more concerning.

Why does this matter to us? Drug overdose rates are higher in rural America than the country at large. Why? Rural jobs can be more physical in nature, creating more opportunity for prescription use and addiction.

Self-medication is a “solution” for lacking economic opportunity, which is prevalent in rural America. Drug use is harder to combat with rural communities’ limited resources. Law enforcement resources are an issue, but communities also lack treatment and rehab options, as well as quality housing for an addict to escape their past and get a fresh start.

Drugs are not a far off “city” problem. They’re our problem. Moving forward in the next few weeks, I hope to spark conversation and create solutions to that problem.
