From the EXECUTIVE CORNER

California Horses Have Chance to Shine To all California breeders and owners, Te California Toroughbred Breeders Association is pleased to announce the 27th running of the California Cup, to be held at Santa Anita Park in conjunction with the Sunshine Millions on Saturday, Jan. 28. Now in its fourth year to be merged with Sunshine Millions, this event will again be a showcase of the top California-bred and California-sired horses, with large felds and competitive racing. Previous California Cup Derby winner California Chrome, the current North American leading money earner, is set to run the fnal race of his notable career on this same day at Gulfstream Park in the world’s newest richest race, the Pegasus World Cup Invitational. Te day will certainly hold a lot of promise for Cal-breds.

Dear friends in the California breeding industry,

Santa Anita Park is once again proud to welcome and support California-bred Toroughbreds and their owners, trainers, and breeders for Sunshine Millions/California Cup Day 2017. Toroughbreds sired and foaled in the state are the backbone of the California racing industry, and the breeding of California-bred Toroughbreds is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Tis year’s date could prove to be a legendary one in the history of California-bred Toroughbreds. It was three years ago that California Chrome began his dual Classic-winning, Horse of the Year season with a win in the California Cup Derby. He has followed up that promise by becoming North America’s all-time leading money winner. As of this writing, on Saturday, Jan. 28—the date of this year’s Sunshine Millions/California Cup Day at Santa Anita—Chrome will race for the fnal time. A win in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park

Total purses for California Cup will again exceed $1 million, with a 10-race card featuring the $250,000 Cal Cup Classic presented by City National Bank, $250,000 Cal Cup Derby, $200,000 Cal Cup Oaks, $150,000 Cal Cup Sprint, $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint, and several overnight races restricted to horses bred/sired in California. Te annual Cal Cup Party for industry participants and racing enthusiasts will be held again in Santa Anita’s upper-level grandstand. Excellent viewing and a festive atmosphere accompany the outstanding Cal Cup food bufet and generous bar. We thank our partners at Santa Anita, and our loyal sponsors, for all of their support honoring the California breeding industry. We hope to see you there. Sincerely, Doug Burge President California Toroughbred Breeders Association

would crown this native California-bred son as the richest horse in the history of the planet. California Chrome’s success is not an isolated accident. Te 26 previous runnings of the California Cup have served as a launch pad for some of the greatest stars of our sport. In 1991, when the event was just a year old, a successful 39-year-old Quarter Horse trainer won three Cal Cup races, including the $250,000 California Cup Classic with Charmonnier. Ten days later, in large part because of the Cal Cup victories, that trainer announced he would leave Quarter Horses to care exclusively for his 20-horse Toroughbred stable. Twenty-fve years, four Kentucky Derbys, and one Grand Slam later, Bob Bafert has lost the cowboy hat, but is still a large presence on Cal Cup Day. On behalf of everyone at Santa Anita, we look forward to hosting you to salute this year’s California-bred stars and welcome those whose light will shine into the future. Sincerely, Joe Morris Sr. Vice President, West Coast Operations Te Stronach Group

California owner/breeder Nick Alexander was named chairman of the Toroughbred Owners of California upon unanimous selection by the TOC board. Alexander joined the board in 2013 and had been serving as the secretary/treasurer. He replaces Mike Pegram, who has served as chairman for six years and will remain on the TOC board and executive committee. A successful businessman who created the Nick Alexander Imports car dealership in Southern California, Alexander stands the stallion Grazen at Tommy Town Toroughbreds in the Santa Ynez Valley. He keeps the horse at his Horse Haven farm when it isn’t breeding season. Alexander has raced the good Cal-bred stakes winner Sunday Rules, and he bred and raced stakes-winning Grazen Sky, a son of Grazen. Alexander was named as the Toroughbred Owners and Breeders Association California Breeder of the Year in 2014. “Mike Pegram has been an exceptional, hard-working chairman, and his shoes will be very hard to fll,” said Alexander. “But I am committed to working Nick Alexander diligently to protect and advance owners’ rights.” Te TOC board appointed Bill Strauss to fll Alexander’s position as secretary/treasurer. Strauss will continue to serve as vice president/Southern California.

Notional

10 YEARS AGO California-bred NOTIONAL scored in his frst stakes when he came home four lengths on top in the $150,000 San Rafael Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Jan. 13, 2007. Favored at 7-10 and ridden by Corey Nakatani, Notional overtook Tenfold and jockey Victor Espinoza coming into the stretch of the one-mile event to become the sixth Cal-bred to take the San Rafael. Only one year earlier, Calbred Brother Derek had won the same race. Doug O’Neill trained Notional for owner Paul Reddam, O’Neill’s brother Dennis having selected the colt for $235,000 out of the 2006 Barretts March 2-year-old sale. Vessels Stallion Farm bred the son of In Excess—Truly Blessed, by French Deputy. Notional went on to win that year’s Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) at Fair Grounds and the following year’s Salvator Mile Handicap (gr. III) at Monmouth Park en route to lifetime earnings of $733,240.

25 YEARS AGO Though never as well-known as John and Betty Mabee’s Best Pal, California-bred BIG PAL became a good stakes winner in his own right. Racing in Northern California and trained by Fordell Fierce, Big Pal amassed a bankroll of $573,912 with a 70-start career. In the early days of 1992, Big Pal beat the even-money favorite, Cal-bred Run Retsina Run, in the $100,000 California Juvenile Stakes (gr. III) at Bay Meadows.

Big Pal

Ron Warren Jr. rode Big Pal to that frst stakes victory Jan. 4. Big Pal raced in the Mabees’ Golden Eagle Farm colors. They bred the son of Beau’s Eagle from the Big Spruce mare Big Spirit, an unraced twin also bred by the Mabees who had already produced stakes winner Lovely Habit.

50 YEARS AGO Following a year in which she was voted champion 2-yearold flly by the Turf and Sport Digest poll of turf writers and broadcasters, California-bred MIRA FEMME began 1967 with back-to-back victories in the Jan. 18 Pasadena Stakes and Jan. 31 Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita. In the six-furlong Pasadena, Mira Femme drew away for an easy two-length win over Forgiving. Two weeks later, she returned to defeat the same rival in the seven-furlong Santa Ynez, this time by 11⁄4 lengths. Walter Blum piloted Mira Femme in both events for trainer Irving Guiney. Verne H. Winchell Jr. bred Mira Femme, a daughter of Dumpty Humpty—Mlle. Somebody, by Oil Capitol. The flly had begun the Santa Anita season in the waning days of 2006 by defeating males in the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes. Earlier that year she won the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes and three stakes at Hollywood Park.

ANNE M. EBERHARDT

Steve Sexton Racetrack executive Steve Sexton, who began his career at Santa Anita, died Dec. 12 after battling brain cancer. He was 57. Sexton served as president of Churchill Downs from 2002-09. He oversaw a major renovation of the Kentucky track that added such facilities as 80 luxury suites and seven hospitality areas. At Santa Anita, Sexton worked as sales promotion manager, moving to assistant marketing director at Canterbury Park in 1985. He later served as assistant general manager and director of marketing for Golden Gate Fields, general manager of Thistledown, executive vice president and general manager of Lone Star Park, and president of Arlington Park. Born in Topeka, Kan., Sexton attended Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif., graduating with degrees in economics and psychology. “He was one of the greatest racing executives of all time,” said Corey Johnsen, president of Kentucky Downs. “A lot of things would come up where Steve would be the frst guy to step up and do everything he could. He was always that guy.” Johnsen, who worked with Sexton at Lone Star, noted as an example of Sexton’s commitment his efforts to ensure that the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund was properly funded.

Memoriam

Garrett Gomez, a two-time Eclipse Award champion jockey and winner of 13 Breeders’ Cup races, died Dec. 14 at age 44 in Tucson. The former rider battled substance-abuse problems through much of his life, and he was reported to have been found at a casino-hotel on tribal land near Tucson. Winner of the prestigious George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 2011, Gomez led all American jockeys by money won for four consecutive years, from 2006-09. He rode some of the nation’s top horses, as well as several major California-breds. He piloted Cal-bred Horse of the Year Nashoba’s Key to victory in the 2008 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (gr. I) and Cal-bred champion Georgie Boy in the 2007 Del Mar Futurity (gr. I). Gomez also famously handed Zenyatta her only defeat when he rode Blame to win the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I). Gomez’s other successful Breeders’ Cup mounts included Beholder in the 2012 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) with Midnight Lute, and the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (gr. I) with Life Is Sweet. The son of jockey Louie Gomez, Garrett Gomez won 3,769 career races and last rode in late 2013. With the help of agent Ron Anderson, he set a single-season record in 2007 by winning 76 added-money races. In 2008, his purse earnings of $23,344,351 were a career high and only $10,000 short of Jerry Bailey’s all-time single-season record.

Offcials said that the track suffered only “minor cosmetic damage.” The earthquake struck at 6:49 a.m., with an epicenter about 100 miles off the coast. “We’re really fortunate,” said Richard Conway, general manager of the Humboldt County Fair. “Things shook off shelves, and there’s some cracks in drywall. Ada Gates Patton Gives Shoeing Clinic in Panama Ada Gates Patton, president of the California Toroughbred Foundation and a longtime respected farrier, conducted a shoeing clinic Nov. 22 at the Hipódromo Presidente Remón, the racetrack in Panama City, Panama. Gates Patton traveled there at the invitation of the Association of Toroughbred Owners of Panama. She spent the next three days going to individual barns and working with racetrack farriers on selected horses with a variety of issues. “I found the farriers to be highly skilled, excellent craftsmen who just needed a few refnements that they absorbed and facilitated immediately,” said Gates Patton. “Te horses themselves had a high level of condition. Tey looked ft and healthy and ran well in wet conditions.” Te high humidity and constant rain present special challenges for racehorses’ feet, Gates Patton found. But the farriers appreciated her presence, her support for their good work, and her deep respect. One of the races on the Nov. 20 card was named in her honor, and she presented the trophy to the winning trainer. Because she speaks Spanish, Gates Patton was able to speak the language during interviews with the local racing television and radio media. A glossy magazine for women called Ellas also interviewed her. Gates Patton was able to tell them stories of shoeing such horses as champions Miesque and Chinook Pass and Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Wild Again. “Te Panamanian people were lively, warm, and passionate about their horses,” said Gates Patton. “Tey, of course, revere Laft Pincay Jr. and have a statue of him in the track paddock. It was an extraordinary week with a lot of successes, and it was an honor to be there.”

onald Valpredo believes in the importance of service to the Toroughbred industry. It’s why he has spent more than 40 years on the board of every major organization in the state, beginning and continuing with the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. Te CTBA frst elected Valpredo to its board in 1972. For the next 18 years he served the organization in just about every capacity, including as president from 1986-90. One of Valpredo’s proudest accomplishments was helping to establish California Cup as a shining spotlight on California-bred racehorses, a series that in 2017 will have its 27th running. To this day the California Cup Sprint bears Valpredo’s name. “It’s such an honor to have a race named after you where you can present the trophy,” he said. Te CTBA has recognized Valpredo even further, choosing him for induction into the Hall of Fame. Te Valpredo family’s California roots trace to Don’s grandfather, Alfonso, a winemaker who emigrated to Burbank in 1898. Te family business evolved and grew as it moved to the San Fernando Valley and then to its current home south of Bakersfeld. Since that time, the Valpredo family has added much to the history of the Cal-bred. Dimaggio, bred and raced by Don’s father, John, was a graded stakes winner by Bold Hitter. Valpredo served two terms on the California Horse Racing Board, from 1990-98. During that time one of the things he pushed for was standardized saddlecloth colors, which remain in use today. Bettors, especially when watching a simulcast, can follow their choices much more easily because each number corresponds to a particular color. From the CHRB, Valpredo moved on to the Toroughbred Owners of California board, serving from 19992011, before returning to the CTBA board. He is currently fnishing up service as the CTBA chairperson and will remain on the board. Valpredo joins trainers Bob Bafert and Art Sherman as the 2017 Hall of Fame inductees. “It’s a very great honor to be respected this way,” Valpredo said. “I’ve enjoyed every day that I’ve been involved in every level of the industry, from the backside to administration. ob Bafert, over the past 20 years, has not only played at the highest levels in horse racing, but has also become something of a household name in the sport. His silver hair and quick wit, along with multiple wins in Triple Crown events and the Breeders’ Cup make him part of racing’s brand around the world. In his home base of Southern California, his career received its frst big push while he trained a band of California-breds. Bafert speaks fondly of those days. “I owe a lot to the Cal-breds,” the 63-yearold Bafert said. “I had a lot of great owners with Cal-breds, especially the Mabees [owner/breeders John and Betty], the Walters [owner/breeders Robert and Barbara], and Mike Pegram. Tey

got me started on my way.” Tose early days were underlined in 2015, as Gimme Da Lute was named Cal-bred Horse of the Year, as well as top 3-year-old male and top sprinter by the California Toroughbred Breeders Association. With that as a backdrop, the Arizona native and national Hall of Famer will enter the CTBA Hall of Fame Feb. 8. Bafert hailed his early band of Cal-bred stakes winners, chiming in with, “My very frst stakes winner was Teresa’s Pleasure. She won the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar in 1990.” Bafert has since won 120 more stakes there to be the leader among Del Mar trainers. Among his many other Cal-bred honorees are Cavonnier, who took Bafert to near nirvana in the 1996 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and was named top 3-year-

old male and Horse of the Year in ’96, following being named top 2-year-old male in ’95; General Challenge, 1999 top 3-year-old male when he won the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) and Del Mar’s Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. I) and older male of 2000 after winning the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I); and Batroyale, who was top juvenile flly in 1995. Bafert’s other stakes-winning Cal-breds include Ofcer and Charmonnier. In those early days Bafert says he had no thoughts of grandeur such as Kentucky Derbies or Breeders’ Cups. “I was more interested in running in the Cal Cup races. In fact, there was a time I was known as Mr. Cal Cup because I had a bunch of nice Cal-bred horses and I pointed them toward the Cal Cup.” Cavonnier solidifed that early foundation by becoming Bafert’s “almost frst Kentucky Derby winner”. He lost by a nose in 1996 in what has been called the closest Derby fnish in the race’s history. It took a seemingly interminable amount of time for ofcials to pore over the fnish-line photo in order to determine the winner. What began as the fush of potential victory for Bafert turned into despair as Grindstone’s number went up. “Te best I could say when they called the winner,” Bafert recalled, “was I knew what it felt like for fve minutes to win the Kentucky Derby. I carried that [disappointment] with me for a long time, thinking that I had messed up my one chance to win the Kentucky Derby.” Victories by Silver Charm and Real Quiet in the succeeding two years helped heal the wound. Tough Bafert now has won four Derbies, 14 Breeders’ Cup races, and the Triple Crown, the last with American Pharoah, he has no trouble referencing his Cal-bred roots. “I owe a lot to all those Cal-breds I trained,” said Bafert, “especially to Cavonnier, who gave me a lot of confdence that I could do well in our sport. He gave me my frst serving of success.” —Gene Williams

ART SHERMAN ixty-one years and counting. Tat’s the short version of the “Life and Times of Art Sherman,” and that’s how long he’s been connected with this sport he loves and has no intention of leaving any time soon. Always one to have a competitive barn with a good share of California-breds, Sherman came to the fore in a big way when he sent a classy-looking colt to the races as a 2-year-old in 2013. His name: California Chrome, and he has taken Sherman and his entourage on the ride of their lives. Sherman’s long and loyal connection to Cal-breds, as well as his saddling of racing’s North America all-time leading money winner in California Chrome, will be honored with a spot in the California Toroughbred Breeders Association Hall of Fame. Te 79-year-old former jockey and native of Brooklyn, N.Y., had this to say about the event: “It’s a real honor to be recognized like this. I’ve had good Calbreds all through the years, and they’ve been good to me. It’s great to be honored for your work.” In reference to the best horses he’s trained over his long career, he pointed to multiple stakes winners Lykatill Hil, Haimish Hy, Lang Field, Cal-bred Ultra Blend, and, of course, California Chrome. “Tere were a lot of other smaller stakes winners,” he added, “but these were the best.” Expanding a bit further, he said, “Over the years we’ve held our own, despite not having a bunch of great horses.” Tat is, until California Chrome. Te chestnut fier, following his victory in the Dec. 17 Winter Challenge Stakes at Los Alamitos, had career earnings of $14,502,650, giving him the record among North American runners, as well as making him the alltime leading Cal-bred earner.

“I’m not the retiring type. I like the action. I’ve always been an action-type of guy.” –Art Sherman

California Chrome’s individual honors could further add to his already premium resume what with his being Horse of the Year in 2014 and a leading candidate for that title again for 2016. During the year he put together a six-race win streak, including victories in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) and Pacifc Classic. 26

Art Sherman, right, started as an exercise rider for Cal-bred Horse of the Year Swaps and some 50 years later gained fame as trainer of Cal-bred Horse of the Year California Chrome

Sherman’s take on his “big horse” is a no-brainer: “He’s a once-in-a-lifetime horse. He’s been quite a boost for my family and the barn and all the people who work for me. When he leaves the barn [he’ll go to stud next year], it’s going to leave quite a void. But we have a lot of young horses coming up, and I’ll look forward for the chance to train some of his foals.” Dealing with a good horse isn’t new to Sherman. After all, he was the chief exercise and work rider and traveling mate for Cal-bred Swaps through his run to the 1955 Kentucky Derby winner’s circle. Sherman still relishes those days criss-crossing the country by train. “I spent a lot of days in a boxcar with him,” Sherman said. “It was quite an experience. I did have to hustle grub when I was on the train. I ran out of food after a couple of days, and at every stop I had to jump of the train and try to fnd something to eat. But, you know, when you’re 18 years old, nothing much bothers you.” Now, in the twilight of his career, Sherman has begun to think of life after “Chrome.” Could that include retirement for the diminutive, energetic Sherman? His answer: “I’m not the retiring type. I like the action. I’ve always been an action-type of guy. I’ve been doing this ever since I was 16 years old, so there aren’t too many other things I know how to do.” —Gene Williams

GRANTED A DOUBLE SOLID WAGER FOR THE WIN

I

BY TRACY GANTZ

“He’s the kind of horse that wants to do things his way,” said Espinoza. “He doesn’t want to be rushed or pushed. I know him, and I know what to do.” Espinoza knows a few things about California-breds. He, of course, pilots the most famous one of all—California Chrome. When California Chrome takes a break, however, Espinoza still gets his share of winners. Te jockey had just scored back-to-back wins on the Nov. 20 Del Mar card with Kentucky-breds prior to the $100,690 Cary Grant. Solid Wager hadn’t won since last year’s Grant, though he and Espinoza did run third in the Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint behind Sunday Rules and Raised a Secret. At Del Mar over the summer, Solid Wager fnished second, with Martin Pedroza aboard, to Soi Phet in a division of the open Harry F. Brubaker Stakes. Tough Solid Wager was the defending champ in the Grant, favoritism went to Magic Mark, winner of the other Brubaker division. Magic Mark ran ffth in the 2014 Grant when it was conducted on a synthetic surface, and he missed last year’s edition when sidelined for an ankle injury. Solid Wager didn’t look like he was going to play a signifcant role in the seven-furlong Grant when he dropped back to last ear-

llness a year ago kept Victor Espinoza from partnering Solid Wager to victory in the Cary Grant Stakes. Joe Talamo deputized that day, but Espinoza was back aboard this year and ended up in the winner’s circle.

ly, well behind the rest of the feld. But he started to hustle on the turn. “I could tell they were going fast up front, and that was fne,” said Espinoza. “Ten when the time came, he went right to it.” Te move on the turn looked impressive, though it left Solid Wager very wide into the stretch. It didn’t matter, as Solid Wager kept to his task and overhauled the entire feld to defeat Grazen Sky by a half-length in 1:22.51. Acceptance fnished third, with Magic Mark ffth. “At frst I was cussing Victor, wondering why he was so far back,” said Peter Miller, who trains Solid Wager. “Ten he winds up with this amazing move, and what can you say about Victor? Tere’s a reason he’s the best.” Gary and Cecil Barber own Solid Wager with the Stanford Stable of Sandra Ann Tsujihara, Michael Joseph De Anda, and Laurence Sai Kit Miao. Madera Toroughbreds bred the 2011 gelded son of Birdonthewire—G Ma, by Valid Wager. Solid Wager was winning his seventh race in 30 starts. He pushed his lifetime bankroll to $429,921. “I’ve had this horse since he was a 2-year-old,” said Miller. “So it’s a lot of fun and great to win this race back-to-back.”

SIRCAT SALLY’S SOVIET PROBLEM STAKES

As a way to showcase California Chrome and give him a prep for the inaugural $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park, Los Alamitos created the $180,000 Winter Challenge Stakes. Any horse starting in the Dec. 17 event was guaranteed $10,000, which attracted a feld of 10, despite the presence of California Chrome.

Two-year-old Cal-bred fllies faced the starter earlier on the card in the $100,000 Soviet Problem at a mile. Six fllies broke from the gate, but it was all Sircat Sally, who dominated as the 1-2 favorite. A little rank early, Sircat Sally took the lead into the frst turn and held it throughout the race. When a couple of rivals tried to challenge her at the top of the stretch, she began lengthening her stride and powered home by 12 lengths in 1:35.42. Cash Prize beat out Bella Luma for second.

os Alamitos paid tribute to California-breds throughout the weekend of Dec. 17-18. Not only did 2-year-olds shine in the Soviet Problem and King Glorious Stakes, the biggest Cal-bred of them all, California Chrome, fnally raced at the track he has called home for years.

32

Te result was never in doubt, but that wasn’t the point. Te track wanted to present its most famous resident in all his glory, and California Chrome came through brilliantly. With win betting only, California Chrome went of at 1-20 and ran exactly as expected. Breaking from post 10, jockey Victor Espinoza had to let California Chrome race wide around the frst turn of the 11⁄16-mile race. Tey settled into ffth down the backstretch, but California Chrome was just biding his time. Around the second turn, California Chrome passed his rivals easily. He coasted home to win by 12 lengths in 1:40.03. Point Piper, winner of the Longacres Mile Handicap (gr. III), fnished second, with multiple stakes winner Papacoolpapacool third. Te time broke the Los Alamitos track record of 1:40.82 set by Uncle Lino April 30 in the California Chrome Stakes. “When I got on him today, he was stronger and it really surprised me,” said Espinoza. “When that happens I have a lot of confdence. It was perfect.’’ Trainer Art Sherman admitted he was nervous before the race because “it is a horse race and anything can happen.” He quickly saw how confdently Espinoza was riding California Chrome, and Sherman proclaimed it the ideal prep for the Pegasus. “Te atmosphere here was just wonderful,” Sherman said. “It did my heart really good to be able to run him in front of Orange County people. Tey are such loyal fans.”

Drayden Van Dyke piloted Sircat Sally for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. Te flly earned her favoritism with a fve-length maiden debut victory at Del Mar Nov. 20. Mike Smith rode her in that frst race. “I’ve never had the chance to sit on her in the morning,” said Van Dyke. “But Mike Smith told me she was a lovely flly. I asked her away from the gate for position, and she was a little keen. But then she came right back to me, and I knew turning for home I had a lot of horse under me.’’ Hollendorfer has based Sircat Sally at Los Alamitos. Assistant trainer Don Chatlos noted that they thought they had a “homecourt advantage,” though Sircat Sally didn’t seem to need it. “Te way she had galloped out in her race at Del Mar, we didn’t think the distance would be a problem,” added Chatlos. “We’re excited about her future.” Joe Turner bred and owns Sircat Sally, a daughter of Surf Cat—Sister Sally, by In Excess. Turner also bred and raced Cal-bred Sister Sally, a two-time winner.

Te combination of owner/breeder Reddam Racing, trainer Doug O’Neill, jockey Mario Gutierrez, and sire Square Eddie have accounted for so many races that it shouldn’t surprise anyone when the team does it again. Tis time they did it with Cal-bred Ann Arbor Eddie, who captured the $100,000 King Glorious Stakes Dec. 18. Five 2-year-olds faced the starter for the King Glorious. Four-time stakes winner California Diamond, who had never fnished worse than second in eight starts, went of as the 2-5 favorite. Ann Arbor Eddie was the second choice at 5-2. California Diamond and Ann Arbor Eddie turned the King Glorious into a match race, the two of them racing head and head from the beginning of the one-mile race. Ann Arbor Eddie raced on the inside, with Kent Desormeaux and California Diamond outside of them. Ultimately, Ann Arbor Eddie proved best, defeating the favorite by 11⁄4 lengths in 1:35.98. Milton Freewater fnished third. “I tried to keep him as comfortable as I could because he was going long for the frst time,” said Gutierrez. “He gave me a good kick going into the last turn.’’ Ann Arbor Eddie broke his maiden in his frst start, a maiden event at Santa Anita Oct. 29. He ran third to Mastery and California Diamond in the Nov. 19 Bob Hope Stakes (gr. III) at Del Mar, a race that looked even better when Mastery returned to win the Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity (gr. I) Dec. 10. Paul and Zillah Reddam bred Ann Arbor Eddie in the name of their Reddam Racing. Te gelding is out of the In Excess mare Repo, who won the 2009 Landaluce Stakes and California Toroughbred Breeders Association Stakes for the Reddams and O’Neill. “Te Square Eddies are unbelievable,” said O’Neill. “Tey have so much heart to them, and they have speed and stamina.’’

Focus on the Future

AN INTERNATIONAL FLAIR CANDICE HARE BY EMILY SHIELDS

E

“I’ve never met someone who consumes so much racing and yet maintains such an acute awareness of detail,” said John Mousis, a former producer at TVG. “Domestic racing, international racing, jockeys, trainers, tactics, track and surface nuances, pace and sectional analysis—she’s just so thorough when talking about races. It’s impressive, and those were just my early impressions.” Hare grew up watching just one race, the Kentucky Derby. “That was my family’s thing,” she said. “It was kind of like when people watch the Olympics, but they don’t actually follow any of the sports until the Olympics. That is how racing was in my life.” Hare frst became enamored with a California-based, charismatic gray colt named Silver Charm, who won the Derby in 1997. “Silver Charm was everything a little girl loves; he was big, pretty, and then he won. But it wasn’t until Zenyatta came along that I really got pulled in.” Hare’s frst visit to a racetrack came in 2010 at Hollywood Park to watch Zenyatta win the Lady’s Secret Handicap (gr. I), which would be the 19th and fnal victory of her storied career. While there, Hare made an effort to not only study a few past performance lines in the Daily Racing Form, but also to read the entirety of the page explaining how to read the past performances. “It spiraled from there,” Hare said. “I’m a very logical thinker and was a math major in college. I like to set out my thoughts and prove an argument. 36

veryone who meets her is immediately impressed by her knowledge and candor. When they fnd out later that Candice Hare has only been immersed in horse racing for a few years, they are astounded.

TVG’s Candice Hare expanding international interest

Handicapping a horse race is really similar to thinking through math. That side of it really appealed to me.” Hare started handicapping domestic racetracks on her own, until another favorite mare, dual Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) winner Ouija Board, had her frst foal in training. “I was looking forward to her progeny,” Hare recalled. Ouija Board’s son Voodoo Prince broke his maiden at Haydock Park in the United Kingdom, then was shipped to Australia to continue his career. The mare’s fourth foal, the brilliant Australia, became a three-time group I winner in the United Kingdom. That hooked Hare on international racing, and that devotion has since spiraled into a career. “Upon getting to know her better, I was shocked to hear that she had only been following racing for a few years,” said Mousis. “Her knowledge base was that of someone who had decades of experience.” After leaving her Riverside, Calif., home for Florida, Hare studied under the tutelage of clocker Bruno DeJulio before working for Jeremy Plonk of Horse

Player NOW. Eventually, Mousis began to lobby to have Hare hired at TVG. Hare applied to be the paddock host at Canterbury Park and made it to the fnal two, but was eventually turned down. Six months after submitting her application to TVG, Hare received a unique position and returned to California on short notice. “I plan out and script one or two international segments per week,” she said. “I get to pick which past races I want to show. The rest of the time I sit in the booth and assist the producer.” Hare is enjoying her role at TVG, but she still believes there is a lot of room for development in international racing coverage. “It’s defnitely a place we could expand,” she said of American racing fans and companies. “The ADWs could certainly build up handle and grow signifcantly because it’s such a big area to grow into.” With Hare’s astounding ability to assimilate racing knowledge, she will be an asset to any position in her career. As Mousis said, “I still learn things from talking to her, and I’ve been in the business for 28 years.”

Tat list would include Tiznow, Best Pal, Bertrando, Snow Chief, Ancient Title, Swaps, and Native Diver. Te last two named do not make the list of the state’s top 30 earners, though Native Diver missed by a mere $100,000. Tey had the misfortune of running in the days when big purses were at a premium—no million-dollar races, for instance, and

a minimum of hundred-granders. Swaps is a perfect example of that, running 25 times and being on the board in 23. However, the size of the purses put his lifetime earnings at $848,900, not bad for the 1950s but no threat to the multi-million-dollar winners of today. Tiznow stands second on the money-winning list, his $6,427,830 now a far cry from the leader. He did earn that, however, in just 15 starts, with victories in two Breeders’ Cup Classics (gr. I)—still alone in that—as the high-water marks in his career. Bred and raced by Cecilia Straub-Rubens, the son of Cee’s Tizzy—Cee’s Song, by Seattle Song, fnished in the money in 14 of his starts. Bertrando seemingly was on the way to victory in the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Classic before the 133-1 longshot Arcangues went fying past as the pair came to the wire. Among brighter days for Bertrando was his victory in the 1993 Pacifc Classic at Del Mar and the Eclipse Award that year as the nation’s top older male. Ultimately an earner of $3,185,610, Bertrando had a remarkable breeding career in California as well. Tough he died in 2014, his ofspring continue to make their mark, both on the track and in the breeding shed. He would go to the lead and then take a little breather around the three-eighths pole. Once you allowed him to get the breather, it was very hard to catch him.” Te wily Whittingham realized that Native Diver tried to get that breather every race, so he would make sure his Pretense would go after him at that point. Tus, Pretense, who also had great speed, was able to beat Native Diver several times. hen asked to choose a most exceptional employee, Rex Dahlberg did not hesitate to name Shane Easterbrook.

“Shane is what I call my livestock manager,” he said. “She’s been with us 10 years now, and she’s very good at what she does.” Easterbrook, along with Dahlberg and his wife, Nancy, all call Dahlberg Farms home. Te San Miguel ranch has 40-50 equine residents at any one time, all of whom are managed by Easterbrook. Although she originally grew up around Quarter Horses in Creston, Calif., Easterbrook never imagined her career now. “I went away from horses for quite some time,” she said. “I got back into it when I met the Dahlbergs. I took the job with them managing the horse racing, which gave me my frst experience with Toroughbreds.” Although initially an internal operation, the Dahlbergs gave Easterbrook their blessing to start her own Easterbrook Livestock Management banner and take in outside clients. “I do 90% of the work on the farm myself,” Easterbrook admitted. “I am very hands-on, doing the feeding, checking the horses, caring for them, and rehabbing them when they come home from the racetrack. I do the sales prep as well.” Dahlberg Farms doesn’t just play host to the typical broodmares, foals, and yearlings, but also 15 retirees that are living out their days in the most enjoyable way.

“Te ones we have rehomed have worked out well, but for the most part they are just here to be well taken care of,” said Easterbrook. “Tose clients are amazing to put out that much efort to do that for their horses.” Easterbrook allowed that the farm is “quiet and very suitable for retirees. Tere isn’t a big infux of mares and foals coming in and out, so exposure is minimal and easier on the horses.” She also works hard to make sure each horse is paired with a pasture mate that works well. “I mix and match personalities,” she said. “If you have one unhappy horse in a paddock, it makes the whole herd unhappy.” Despite the Dahlbergs’ relatively small number of mares, the farm has churned out several recent stakes winners. Graded stakes winner Tiz a Minister (an earner of $481,530), multiple stakes winner Patriots Rule ($422,420), graded stakes-placed and stakes winner Raised a Secret ($492,130), and stakes-placed winners Tiz a Kiss ($360,751) and Image of Joplin ($233,647) all were born and raised at Dahlberg Farms this decade. Easterbrook herself has developed a nutrition and care program designed to maximize each horse’s abilities. “We developed our own grain to work with our pasture after we tested our pastures and soil,” she said. “We focus on growing good bone on the horses; part of our success is our horses having good legs under them. Ten I work on the mental aspect of each baby as it’s brought up. We really try here, even if it’s unconventional.” One example is Raised a Secret, who used to be so timid he would get picked on in the pasture. “I moved him in with some cattle,” Easterbrook said. “Once he fgured out he could dominate the cattle, he had enough confdence to go back in with other colts and they didn’t beat him up any more.” Easterbrook enjoys the sales aspect of the farm and is happy with their recent results. “I love promoting the Dahlbergs’ horses,” she said. “Tey are wonderful people, and it’s great to live on the farm together. I am fattered that they trust me to take care of their property and horses. It’s quite important.”

irst stakes winners are special, no matter what the circumstances. When a homebred gets the job done, it means even more. Not only did Myles McMahon win the $60,075 Golden Gate Debutante Stakes Nov. 25 with homebred Isa Firecracker, but he put together the breeding after thorough research. It is paying of with winners that his entire family enjoys. “Tis is not only my frst stakes winner, it’s my trainer’s frst stakes winner too,” said McMahon. Jamey Tomas trains McMahon’s horses in Northern California, a partnership that has evolved into a friendship as well. “I was looking for a trainer who would take a guy like me who had never owned a horse and would be somewhat local,” said McMahon. “Jamey lived in Sacramento, about three miles away from me at the time.”

A friend said that Tomas did well with a small string of horses. McMahon had grown up attending the races with his father, and after he established his residential real estate business, he wanted to own a horse instead of simply betting on them. Tomas claimed Professor Higgins for McMahon at Golden Gate in 2005, getting the 6-year-old gelding for $4,000. Professor Higgins won in his second start for McMahon, grabbing a neck victory at Solano. “Mostly I had claiming horses for about a decade,” said McMahon. “We had some horses who went on to win stakes after they got claimed from us.” Perhaps the best was Streakin’ Mohican, claimed by McMahon and William Burton for $12,500 in 2009 at Golden Gate. Streakin’ Mohican won three races for McMahon before he and his partners lost the horse for $32,000. Streakin’ Mohican ultimately earned $380,423

and won stakes at Arapahoe and Turf Paradise. Tomas has been McMahon’s only trainer. “I don’t think I ever would have a horse with anyone else,” said McMahon. “His kids are about to graduate from high school, and he’s trying to ramp up his business.” McMahon predicts that Tomas will start to have even more success now that his children are grown. Family is crucial to McMahon’s life as well. He has two sons, 11-year-old John and 6-year-old Chase. Tey enjoy going to the races. “If we don’t have a race during a month, it disappoints them,” said McMahon. “Tey know it’s a big deal. We’re building amazing memories.” Te racetrack has also played a role in McMahon’s relationship with his fancée, Celene. Tey had their frst date at Golden Gate when McMahon’s horse Sunday Comic was running. Along the way, McMahon and a couple of partners claimed Caroline Elena, a California-bred daughter of Tannersmyman. Caroline Elena, a $5,000 graduate of the 2007 California Toroughbred Breeders Association Northern California sale, had won a few races by the time Tomas claimed her for $5,000. After Caroline Elena’s racing career ended, McMahon’s partners didn’t want to pursue the breeding business and so McMahon decided to go it alone. By then he was reading voraciously about breeding and was ready to try to select the right stallion for his mare. “About three years ago I thought it was time to try to make this into a true busi-

ness,” he said. “We got out the pencils and started doing nicks. We wanted something with some versatility, and we wanted something that would cross well.” McMahon liked the fact that Heatseeker was getting winners on dirt, turf, and synthetic surfaces, given that Golden Gate has a Tapeta main track. He also felt that Heatseeker’s pedigree would nick well with Caroline Elena, and he wanted a Cal-bred because of the state’s lucrative incentive program. “Heatseeker is not a huge stallion, but he’s real athletic,” said McMahon. “Our mare wasn’t huge, but she’s real muscular. We wanted something that was going to add a little speed.” Isa Firecracker resulted from the breeding, but unfortunately Caroline Elena was injured during the birth to the point that she couldn’t have any more foals. McMahon eventually found the mare a good home in Oregon with a sherif, who uses Caroline Elena as her riding horse. McMahon keeps his horses at Ellen Jackson’s Victory Rose Farm in Vacaville. He has two mares in foal to Mr. Big, and he bought a few yearlings at Keeneland this year. “It’s only 25 minutes from our home,” he said of Victory Rose. “We can go see the horses, pet them, and feed them carrots. We like to be around them. Te kids love it.” McMahon has been grateful to the people at the farm and the track for all the work they do. “It’s amazing how 54

McMahon wasn’t sure whether he would put Isa Firecracker through a sale. “Ellen broke her and called me up one day and said she was ready to go to the track,” said McMahon. McMahon. “She just exploded and took of, beating this horse by 10-12 lengths.” Tomas put Isa Firecracker into a 51⁄2-furlong open maiden race at Golden Gate in August. Against 11 rivals, Isa Firecracker and jockey Alejandro Gomez won by 11⁄4 lengths. Tat prompted McMahon and Tomas to try their luck at Santa Anita because the Golden State Series ofered a flly stakes on the frst day of the Breeders’ Cup. Tey prepped in an allowance/ optional claimer at Santa Anita, and Isa Firecracker fnished second, a half-length behind 1-5 favorite Vai. In the $200,690 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Nov. 4, Isa Firecracker ran third after getting a bit crowded in the stretch. “We were stoked because it was a big event on Breeders’ Cup morning,” said McMahon. “It was surreal, and we got her stakes-placed, which we were real proud of.” Gomez rode her in both Santa Anita starts, McMahon noting thankfully that the jockey took of possible business at Golden Gate to ride Isa Firecracker. But even bigger things lay ahead. Back home at Golden Gate, Isa Firecracker and Gomez took on open company in the six-furlong Debutante. Te flly went of as the second choice to favored Grand Prix, and she gutted out a nose victory over the favorite in 1:10.21. “She’s an athlete,” McMahon marveled. “She’s seriously getting better and better. CHIROPRACTIC CARE CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELPS ATHLETES PERFORM AT PEAK LEVELS BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

keletal/joint pain, including back pain, can hinder a horse’s athletic ability. He might be reluctant to do some of things that he was routinely good about before he became so uncomfortable. He might resent being saddled or might balk at entering the starting gate. He may be more easily injured because he’s using his body diferently, trying to favor the areas that hurt.

Veterinarian Dr. Jenny Johnson uses regular chiropractic care to keep her equine clients at the top of their game

Tia Nelson, a veterinarian/farrier in Helena, Mont., who also does a lot of chiropractic work, says back problems can present a variety of signs. “Te horse may simply be reluctant to take a certain lead or travels with a shorter stride,” said Nelson. “Identifying the problem can sometimes be a challenge, to pinpoint where it is.” She uses a variety of treatments for sore backs, including chiropractic manipulations. “I palpate the horse’s back and identify spots that are not moving the way they are supposed to move,” said Nelson. Once she fnds the spots that needs work, she can adjust them. “It’s amazing how much diference this can make for the horse—after everything is in place again,” Nelson said. “Sometimes it takes more than one session to correct a problem, depending on how much is wrong. “I talk to the owner (or trainer) when I am working on the horse, and explain what I am feeling and what my goal is with the chiropractic adjustment I plan to make. Sometimes I also use non-steroidal anti-infammatory drugs on a back injury to help relieve swelling, infammation, and pain, and sometimes I use steroids. It’s important to identify the problem and fgure out if it’s an acute injury or a chronic problem. With some horses it can be difcult to resolve an old chronic injury.” It often helps to use a combination of therapies. Nelson says that she has found performing acupuncture frst makes chiropractic adjustments quicker and easier. “Te out-of-place areas tend to go into place again easier,” she said. “Perhaps the acupuncture relaxes the muscles around the joints that are in trouble.” Chiropractic work on horses is very common today, according to Dr. Bruce Connally, a sports-medicine veterinarian in Berthoud, Colo.

Johnson often gets calls to look at a horse because it has back pain that can’t be resolved with traditional modalities. “When I evaluate that horse, frst I watch it move on a lead shank, walking away from me and toward me, trotting

eral other signs, may be an indication of sacroiliac pain. A paper presented at the 2014 AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) meeting by Dr. Rob van Wessum reported on several simple clinical indicators for sacroiliac pain.

“Tere are all kinds of equine chiropractors,” Connally said. “We see everything from people who push the spine sideways back and forth to loosen it, to people who tie the horse’s tail to a post and walk the horse forward to pop the back. Tere’s a huge range of treatments, and some are risky. I’m not opposed to chiropractic for horses because it can be a big help if done correctly. But I am not a big enthusiast, just because of some of the things I see. “You need confdence in the person doing it (with proper training), and need to beware of the ones who do the rough, high-velocity blasting of the back. Some chiropractors use little spring-loaded hammers to thump the back, to make the horse jump and adjust itself. Some of these rough techniques may be more harmful than helpful, but a good equine chiropractor can make a big diference for some horses.” Dr. Jenny Johnson of Oakhill Shockwave and Veterinary Chiropractic in Calabasas, Calif., works frequently on back problems. Johnson has been an equine veterinarian for 30 years, but during the past 10 years she has narrowed her practice to specialize in shockwave therapy and chiropractic care. “My practice is about 95% chiropractic and shockwave therapy, and probably more than half of what I do is chiropractic,” Johnson said. “I have a large population of upper-level performance horses that I work on at least once a month, depending on their schedule. I work on them for regular maintenance, to keep them at the top of their game.” Some people bring horses to Johnson only if they think the horse has a back problem. “Some people ask if I can just check the horse quickly and see if there’s a problem,” she said. “Since chiropractic care involves evaluation of the animal as a whole, however, I can’t just do a ‘quick check.’ I evaluate the entire horse. Te goal with chiropractic care is to optimize health and performance, and we do that by infuencing the nervous system—which controls everything in the body.”

away from me and toward me—on a straight line,” she said. “I also watch the horse on a serpentine walk, and evaluate whether it has a diagonal walk the way it should (opposite hind and forefoot are moving together) or whether it has a lateral walk (the hind and front on the same side moving together). “A lateral walk, in the presence of sev-

Chiropractic work often starts at the horse’s head, checking for cranial faults, before relocating to the back of the horse and moving forward

straight? Does the movement appear fuid or choppy? Is the horse holding the tail to one side or the other? Is the hind end symmetrical, or does one side of the rump drop lower than the other at the trot? “When I begin working on the horse, I start at the head and evaluate muscles of the jaw, the TMJ (temporomandibular) joint, the suture lines of the skull, and check for what are called cranial faults, in chiropractic terminology. Tis gives me a chance to get to know the horse and the horse get to know me, and horses typically enjoy this work. “Many of the chiropractic cranial faults on the head are related to specific pelvic chiropractic faults. So if I can address these faults on the head, then it frequently makes the adjustments on the pelvis easier.” Next, Johnson moves to the back of the horse and works forward. She said she is checking for back pain through palpation, and she evaluates each joint in the pelvis and the vertebral column. 74

“MOST HORSES ARE ASYMMETRIC IN SOME WAY. I SUSPECT THAT MUCH OF THIS ASYMMETRY STARTS WHEN THEY ARE BORN.” DR. JENNY JOHNSON. “I am evaluating for motion up and down, and to left and right,” she said. “Tere is a normal range of motion for each one of those vertebral joints. If it doesn’t move properly, I identify which way it’s not moving and then re-establish that motion with an adjustment. Once I have fnished my evaluation and adjustments on the vertebral column, then I evaluate range of motion of each joint in each leg. “Most horses are asymmetric in some way. I suspect that much of this asymmetry starts when they are born. Tey are squeezed through the birth canal when everything in their body is soft

❙ January 2017 ❙ www.ctba.com

and movable. It’s not unusual to have some movement of the pelvis out of alignment by the time they get through the birth canal, and if it stays that way, the horse can end up with an asymmetrical pelvis. “Tis is a valid reason for doing a chiropractic adjustment on foals. If the young horse has an asymmetrical pelvis, the horse will adapt and the body will do what it needs to do as the horse grows up. But a lot of these issues probably start at birth.” She fnds a lot of restrictions in the pelvis and in the mid-lumbar area at L2, L3, L4, and L5 (the lower back).

Health “Tis is where the horse has to fex when doing athletic work, and where all the energy engagement has to come through, from the hindquarters,” said Johnson. “A horse that can’t fex properly can’t push of as strongly when running. “I often fnd a horse in which the back is not necessarily painful when you push on that area. But it could be sensitive when a person is brushing the back, or the horse might respond by

76

being a little cranky. I’ll fnd that these horses are very restricted in certain vertebrae. When I make adjustments, often they experience immediate relief. Some people tell me they have a totally diferent horse the next day. “Tis is very rewarding, and it makes the horse happier. Tese vertebral issues are things that cannot be addressed any other way. Back pain can be related to a lot of diferent things, but there can be issues that will be missed if the horse

❙ January 2017 ❙ www.ctba.com

does not have chiropractic care as part of the therapeutic regime.” If horse owners or trainers seek chiropractic help for a horse, they need to fnd someone who is properly trained and certifed. Johnson tells of a veterinarian who lost his license to practice in multiple states for endangering the health and welfare of animals. He ran a weekend course to teach people to become what he called chiro-practitioners—with no requirement that they be a veterinarian or a chiropractor. “By law, an animal chiropractor must be either a veterinarian or a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), with a minimum of 220 hours of post-graduate training in animal chiropractic,” said Johnson. “In California, for instance, a DC doing animal chiropractic is required to do animal chiropractic work under the direct supervision of a veterinarian. Tis requirement for supervision of a DC varies by state.” Two governing bodies administer board exams and provide certifcation in animal chiropractic: the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) and the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA). “Whoever works on your horse should be a member of one of those organizations,” advised Johnson. “If you want to fnd a qualifed equine chiropractor, those organizations have websites where you can fnd a properly trained animal chiropractor who is close to you. “Chiropractic work is a practice of subtlety. If someone is making big, dramatic adjustments by yanking a leg around, or tying the tail to a tree and making the horse walk forward (to try to straighten the back), this is not chiropractic and could be dangerous to the horse. It’s important to fnd someone who has the proper training. People who don’t have a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, neuroanatomy, and neurophysiology should not be doing this, because they are infuencing the nervous system.” Improper attempts at adjustments could cause serious injury or negatively afect the horse in other ways.

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old), a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2015 but will stand in the state in 2016. Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through Dec. 18, 2016.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text.. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Percentages are based upon number of named foals of racing age.
