From the EXECUTIVE CORNER ROBYN BLACK CTBA LOBBYIST

And They’re Off…Two New eGaming Bills Introduced In California

T

he California Legislature has attempted to authorize Internet poker every year since the 2007-2008 legislative session, with 12 bills on the subject over the past seven years. We have also seen drafts from coalitions of tribes; tribes and card rooms; and tribes, card rooms, and technology providers that never made it into actual legislation. Te bills have included concept bills (or language) and detailed proposals that included defnitions of eligible licensees, fees, taxes, suitability, fnancial requirements, tribal sovereignty, and frameworks for government oversight often exceeding more than 70 pages each. It’s one of the most complicated issues most lawmakers will ever face, and for good reason. Tere are potentially billions of dollars in play in California, not only from Internet poker, but in future forms of eGaming. An early proponent of Internet gaming was former Senator Rod Wright (D-Los Angeles.) Wright was an intellectual type who was known to dive deep into policies such as gaming, energy, and any complicated issues faced by the state legislature. Wright traveled around the world studying operators of Internet gaming and speaking to regulators. Wright often spoke of the need for people to understand a future of gaming on devices not even imaginable in today’s world. Tis vision of the future is the foundation of racing’s opposition to any legislation that does not allow racing the same opportunities for new gaming that would be allowed for card rooms and casinos. And that future is here thanks largely to millennials hungry for games they can play on electronic devices. Currently, the only legal form of wagering on the Internet is for a racing association, fair, or satellite facility to accept advance deposit wagers on live racing. Tis exclusivity was granted to racing in AB 471 by Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg in 2001 following the decline in racing due to the passage of Indian Gaming.

Te demand for new gaming on mobile devices is on a rapid rise. Te increasing demand creates new challenges for horse racing but also new opportunities. In the fnal days of the 2015 Legislative Session, Assembly Governmental Organization Committee Chair Adam Gray (D-Merced) amended two bills to address the fast-growing popularity of two new forms of eGaming. AB 1437 will establish the Internet Fantasy Sports Games Consumer Protection Act, and AB 1441 will authorize the California Interactive Sports Wagering Consumer Protection Act—both addressing two of the fasting-growing segments in the new world of eGames. Te 2006 federal Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA), according to many, “legalized” fantasy sports in all but fve states. Supporters of the games such as DraftKings and FanDuel argue Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) is a game of skill and therefore is not gambling. But on Oct. 15, the Nevada gaming regulators ordered DFS operators to stop serving Nevada customers based on an opinion by the Nevada Attorney General that determined DFS is gambling and ordered operators to obtain a Nevada Sports Gaming License before ofering further play. DFS sites have also recently been accused of insider trading when one employee of DraftKings won $350,000 on a FanDuel contest. Consumer demand for fantasy sports is on an explosive growth orbit, with some experts predicting $23 billion in wagers by 2020. California accepts DFS wagers as legal. However, Gray believes consumers need protections and the state needs to participate in the revenue generated from California players. Sports wagering has also been the subject of proposed legislation in California in the past, authored by Senator Wright, which failed due to tribal opposition. Te new bill still requires a change in federal law, which only allows sports wagering in four

states, but passage in California is gaining popularity. Former NBA Commissioners David Stern and Adam Silver now support federal legislation. It’s estimated that illegal sports betting in the U.S. could reach $400 billion a year. Others place the number at $100 billion, with $4 billion alone on the Super Bowl. Stern and others opposed the efort in 1991, and their support for current changes to allow states to regulate sports wagering is seen as a sea change. Lastly, there is one other very signifcant development on the Internet poker front. In October, the New Jersey Division of Gambling Enforcement fnally gave the green light to Amaya to ofer Internet poker. Te fght over the “bad actor” provisions in the I-poker bills have been squarely aimed at PokerStars, the worldwide titan in Internet gaming. Amaya purchased PokerStars last year in an efort to bring their games to the U.S. Not only did New Jersey approve of the Amaya license, but regulators will allow them to ofer play under the PokerStars and Full Tilt brands. Tere is little doubt the powerful operator will now focus on passage in California and invest heavily in resources to drive consumer demand, which may fnally result in the passage of an I-poker bill. Racing has been very active in passing Internet poker along with Amaya, the San Manuel and Morongo tribal governments, and Bicycle, Commerce and Hawaiian Gardens casinos. We still face opposition to the inclusion of horse racing from some of California’s wealthiest and most powerful tribes, but the law is on our side based on a 2014 Legislative Council Opinion in California. Racing needs to study and invest in the games of the future. Card rooms and casinos see the opportunities and recognize the potential to create new fans, establish player loyalty, and cross-promote with their brick and mortar facilities. Tis is a race we can’t aford to lose.

Autumn continued the winning ways of California-breds in stakes, both in California and elsewhere. In Washington, Cal-bred GOLD RUSH DANCER won the $64,350 Gottstein Futurity at Emerald Downs Sept. 27. As the 2-5 favorite under jockey Julien Couton, Gold Rush Dancer won the 11⁄16-mile race for 2-year-olds by 51⁄2 lengths. Bill Tollett trains the son of Private Gold—Dances On Water, by In Excess, for owner/breeder John Parker. As Santa Anita began its fall meeting, Cal-bred SINGING KITTY defeated graded stakes winner Spirit of Xian by 11⁄4 lengths in the $94,150 Unzip Me Stakes. Rafael Bejarano rode the 3-year-old flly for trainer Matt Chew in the Sept. 26 race over the downhill turf course of about 61⁄2 furlongs. Peter Jeong and Chris Aulds own the Singing Kitty daughter of Ministers Wild Cat—Natural Singer R N, by Unbridled’s Song. Tommy Town Thoroughbreds bred her. At Los Alamitos, Cal-breds JUST GOOGLE ME and ULTIMATE LUCK became stakes winners. Favored at 4-5, Just Google Me crushed her competition by 91⁄2 lengths in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante Stakes for 2-year-old fllies Sept. 19. CTR Stables owns the daughter of Stormin Fever—Lila Paige, by Cryptoclearance, and Edwin Maldonado rode her for trainer Scott Rollins. Golden Eagle Farm bred Just Google Me. Ultimate Luck won the $30,000 Buena Park Stakes, one of several starter stakes scheduled for Los Alamitos’ closing day, Sept. 25. Ultimate Luck won by 23⁄4 lengths for owner Success Racing Two, trainer Doug O’Neill, and jockey Felipe Valdez. Harris Farms and Summer Mayberry bred the 3-year-old gelded son of Lucky J. H.—Ultimate Honor, by Norquestor. G. G. RYDER lived up to his 9-5 favoritism in the $62,505 Bull Dog Handicap at Fresno Oct. 18. Ridden by Ricardo Gonzalez, G. G. Ryder won the 11⁄8-mile race by a length. Jerry Hollendorfer trains the 4-year-old son of Chhaya Dance—Stormy Gigi, by Storm Boot, and owns him with George Todaro. Eagle Oak Ranch bred G. G. Ryder.

CHRB ADOPTS COBALT LIMIT The California Horse Racing Board has adopted a regulatory amendment that puts the authorized threshold for cobalt at 25ng/ml in blood serum. The rule went into effect Oct. 5, following approval by California’s Offce of Administrative Law. The CHRB notice about the change noted that virtually all racehorses in California were already in compliance with this threshold. Cobalt is an essential trace element that occurs naturally at low levels in horses. The notice said that cobalt is “widely believed to be a potential blood-doping agent and horse welfare issue when administered at higher levels.” The regulation also stipulates increasing penalties when cobalt is found in excess of 50ng/ml. On Oct. 16, Rick Arthur, the CHRB’s equine medical director, issued an advisory that the fairly new supplement Finish Line Iron Power has a high cobalt concentration reported at 21.6 mg per serving. That compares to most vitamin and mineral supplements with a cobalt concentration below 2 mg, the advisory said. Horsemen were advised to use Finish Line Iron Power “with caution, if at all.” The OAL also approved CHRB regulatory amendments about the vet’s list and anti-infammatory medications. The threshold for ketoprofen in blood serum was lowered to 2ng/ ml, and a regulatory threshold for isofuprodone was established at 100pg/ml. Also, Rule 1588 was amended to make horses on the vet’s list in other racing jurisdictions ineligible to start in California “without prior approval of the stewards under defned situations.”

Milky Way Farm

inda Madsen epitomizes the breeder that the California Toroughbred Breeders Association had in mind when it created and modifes the California-bred incentive program. Tose incentives are helping her to bring better stallions and mares to California and breed a better Calbred at her Milky Way Farm in Temecula.

“I think that the Cal-bred program is just the greatest program ever,” said Madsen. Largely because of the additional opportunities for Calbreds at the racetrack, which makes them more valuable to sell, Madsen has been able to expand her stallion roster and obtain quality mares to support those stallions. In the past couple of months, Milky Way has brought Smart Bid and Circumference to California, and they join the other three stallions already standing at Milky Way—Hooray20

forhollywood, Street Life, and Sundarban. Te stallion roster is a combination of horses Madsen owns part of and client-owned stallions. She and bloodstock agent Gayle Van Leer have combed broodmare sales in Kentucky and California to fnd mares to breed to the farm’s stallions. “We believed that we need to select some of the best mares that were available that fell within our price range,” Madsen said. Teir hard work has paid of, such as when Madsen bought Chilean champion Hickory for just $1,000 at the 2012 Barretts

January mixed sale. Te mare was open, had one foal to the races who had only placed, and had a yearling by City Zip. Madsen had seen the City Zip yearling, who had just sold at the Keeneland January mixed sale for $65,000. She liked the yearling enough to buy Hickory, but even she couldn’t have predicted that the yearling would go on to be Cal-bred Alert Bay, a multiple graded stakes winner and earner of $954,495. Hickory’s personality has endeared her to Madsen in addition to the exploits of her son. Madsen keeps the mare in a small pasture

Linda Madsen with her star broodmare Hickory, dam of Cal-bred multiple graded stakes winner Alert Bay

Madsen married Toroughbred veterinarian Larry Seeman, and they raised two boys, Terry and John, now adults. Seeman worked for many of the Toroughbred farms that dotted the area during the 1980s. Tat was Linda’s introduction to Toroughbreds, and she loved the breed and the racing. During that time, Linda and Larry bred the flly Runaway Blues, a Cal-bred daughter of Runaway Groom, who briefly stood at El Rancho Murrieta. Linda eventually lost Runaway Blues in a claiming race, but it whetted her appetite for Toroughbreds. Linda and Larry kept some Toroughbred layups at Milky Way, and as the Arabian business began to dwindle, they started switching the farm to Toroughbreds. Larry didn’t live long enough to see the complete transformation because he died in 2008, but Linda has carried on their work. Dr. Steve Colburn now serves as Madsen’s veterinarian, and she consults with him on the nutrition program for all of the horses. Tough she has three full-time employees and several part-timers, she is very hands-on, doing much of the horse management herself. 22

Sweetnearlypic and her Sundarban flly enjoy the lush paddocks at Milky Way Farm

Milky Way has three barns for a total of 55 stalls. Most of the horses spend much of their time outdoors, either in one of the 15 fve-acre pastures or in one of the approximately 50 outdoor pens of varying sizes. Te pens and pastures are fenced with wood and V-mesh. “We just built 20 more pens because we’re getting a lot of lay-ups, and we also built more foaling stalls,” said Madsen. She believes that with California’s temperate climate, horses enjoy being outside and thrive in a more natural environment. Another recent upgrade has been the addition of an ofce building. New trees and fowers have been part of this year’s improvements, and Madsen is looking forward to showing of the farm as the frst stop on the Nov. 21 stallion tour hosted by the California Toroughbred Farm Managers Association and the CTBA. Linda serves as vice president of the CTFMA. California’s drought afects every farm, but Madsen is lucky to be connected to the local water district. She has just upgraded all her piping. “We’re very water-conscious,” she said. “With the drought, we can’t irrigate the pastures, but we’ve always fed hay nutritionally

CALIFORNIA THOROUGHBRED ❙ November 2015 ❙ www.ctba.com

anyway. We usually feed a mix of alfalfa and grass hay.” Madsen has the hay tested so that she and Colburn can be sure the hay and grain diet has the right amount of protein, vitamins, and minerals for the specifc animal. Milky Way ofers a full range of services, from breeding and foaling mares to caring for young horses, sales preparation, and lay-ups. Te only thing the farm doesn’t do is breaking and training. Galway Downs and San Luis Rey Downs are both close by. Madsen sends her horses to Jose Murillo, who has his own facility and also trains out of Galway. Joy Seifert and Jef Stiefel partner with Madsen on many of her horses. Tey are all also good friends, and Seifert’s daughter Rebecca is married to Linda’s son John. John and Rebecca have twin daughters, while Terry and his wife, Bethany, have three sons, giving Linda plenty of grandchildren to spoil. Seifert, Stiefel, and Madsen own Sundarban, a son of A.P. Indy—Desert Tigress, by Storm Cat. Te second dam is champion Sky Beauty, who also produced English group III winner Hurricane Cat, and Sundarban is a half brother to English

whose frst foals are now yearlings. A son of Street Sense—Stone Hope, by Grindstone, Street Life won the 2012 Curlin Stakes and Broad Brush Stakes. “He bred a nice book of mares this year,” said Madsen. “He had beautiful babies, and most of the mares were bred back to him.” Te pedigree is so live that a half brother to Street Life by War Front sold for $850,000 as a weanling at the 2014 Keeneland fall mixed sale. George Krikorian, who now sits on the California Horse Racing Board, bred and owns Hoorayforhollywood. Te stallion is a stakes-placed son of Storm Cat, and his frst foals arrived this year. Krikorian raced the stallion’s dam, the Wild Rush mare Hollywood Story. She earned $1,171,105 by winning such races as the Hollywood Starlet Stakes (gr. I) and Vanity Invitational Handicap (gr. I). Madsen is keeping an eye on Hollywood Idol, a winning half brother to Hoorayforhollywood running on the East Coast. “His babies looked really nice, and he got a good book of mares this year too,” said Madsen of Hoorayforhollywood. “I just love George, and we are so thankful that George has let us have Hollywood here.” If Madsen sounds happy with all aspects of Milky Way Farm, it’s because she is. “I have truly been able to live my greatest dreams every day,” she said. “I wake up every morning and know that I have to be one of the luckiest people on earth.”

group II-placed winner Growl. Sundarban’s frst foals are 3-year-olds, and he is starting to get winners. Madsen said that he bred 48 mares this year. “I think he’s going to do well,” said Madsen. “He has several in training that I know are very good. Tey need to go a distance, with the A.P. Indy line.” Madsen owns Circumference with Seifert, and she is very excited about his prospects. Circumference is only a 3-yearold, and he arrived at Milky Way in early October from France. Michael Tabor of Coolmore Stud raced the Andre Fabre-trained Circumference, who started just three times. Madsen was able to get Circumference with the help of Tom Bell and Dennis Boultinghouse. Te fashy chestnut colt is by Galileo— Circle of Life, by Belong to Me. He is a half brother to Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) and Louisiana Derby (gr. II) winner Circular Quay, an earner of $1,505,434. “We were really looking for a Galileo horse,” said Madsen. “We want to diversify the stallions so that there will be horses that appeal to diferent people. We were looking to fll out the stallion roster. “He has a wonderful personality. After being here for only a few days, he acts like he’s been here forever.” Boultinghouse also helped bring Smart Bid to Milky Way. George Strawbridge bred the son of Smart Strike—Recording, by Danzig, in Pennsylvania and raced him in the name of his Augustin Stable. With Graham Motion training, Smart Bid earned $1,008,309 and won four stakes, including the 2011 Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap (gr. IIT) in Louisiana and the 2009 Damascus Stakes at Santa Anita. Strawbridge initially stood Smart Bid in New York, and the horse’s frst foals are yearlings. Strawbridge is interested in the Cal-bred program and plans to send several mares to him at Milky Way. “Mr. Strawbridge told me that he is so happy that the horse is out here,” said Madsen. “He is the nicest man. Smart Bid is so perfectly correct, and I’m just really excited to have him here. People think he is a long-distance horse, but he won the Damascus at seven furlongs out here.” Boultinghouse and trainer Bob Bean are the principal owners of Street Life,

Focus on the Future

JEFF FURMANSKI GETTING A FOOT IN THE DOOR

J

ef Furmanski’s mother, Julie, used to place her son in a red wagon and drag him out to watch the races from the fnish line at Del Mar. For a long time that was Furmanski’s chief exposure to the sport, as he picked mostly favorites to win from his place by the rail. Te San Clemente native eventually branched out to visiting Santa Anita Park every Dec. 26 for opening day. It wasn’t long before he knew racing was his future. “It took my heart,” Furmanski said. “I thought I just need to do what it takes to get my foot in the door in this sport.” While still in high school, Furmanski set of to pursue his dream, landing an internship at the Del Mar Toroughbred Club when he was only 17. “Te internship had a marketing aspect,” Furmanski said. “I worked in the press box opening day and spent a lot of time in the racing ofce answering phone calls and taking entries. But there was a lot of helping with promotion, like handing out shirts and dealing with big groups in the infeld. Tere was something new to keep me going every day.” Before graduating from high school this past spring, Furmanski reached out to trainer Leonard Powell and asked if he needed a hot-walker. “I e-mailed him saying I want to be a trainer some day, and asked if he needed help.” Powell declined at the time, but the very day after Furmanski’s grad-

26

uation, Powell asked him to start work at Santa Anita. Te grueling, pre-dawn drive from San Clemente to Arcadia did little to temper Furmanski’s enthusiasm. He loves his entry-level hot-walking position. “I love just putting the halter on when they get back from the track, petting on them, and leading them to their water. I give them carrots after.” Te family atmosphere in the barn helps, too. “Everyone chips in,” said Furmanski. “Sometimes I groom while the groom holds the horse, and sometimes I see Leonard doing the hot-walking. Tere are 22 horses in the barn and only seven workers, including Leonard. I love the whole atmosphere of it.” One of Furmanski’s favorite horses is the hard-knocking California-bred gelding Soi Phet. “Tat horse knows exactly what he is doing,” Furmanski said of the 7-year-old son of Tizbud—Summer Jersey, by Siberian Summer. “He’s easily the most prestigious horse in the barn, and he has a good mind. He’s just on another level from the rest.” Te stakes-winning, graded stakes-placed Soi Phet has earned $493,728 with eight wins in 36 starts. Now 18, Furmanski expanded his reach by working in customer service at Del Mar in the afternoon. “I worked in the winner’s lounge sometimes, or at the clubhouse escalator. It can be tough after long mornings of walking, but my mom told me it’s important to have my face around.”

He befriended previous Focus on the Future subjects Jack Carlino, who spent the summer working for trainer Richard Mandella, and Matt Dinerman, now the track announcer at Emerald Downs. “It’s always been a game of who you know and what you know,” Furmanski said. “We talk every day.” Furmanski will continue to work for Powell until the fall meet at Del Mar is over, then he plans to move to Arizona to start college in the spring. “Te Scottsdale Community College has a horse program that ties into the Racetrack Industry Program at the University of Arizona,” he explained. Although he’s not yet willing to let his dream of being a trainer die, Furmanski now knows how difcult racetrack work can be. “I know that those long mornings on the backside can catch up to you,” he said. “Now I think I would love to be a steward or work somewhere on the front side. Either way I know that I could never just be happy in a cubicle. I need to be out, walking around and near horses.”

A COMEBACK WITH CAL-BREDS

RICHARD BALTAS’ GOLDEN YEAR BY GENE WILLIAMS

T

rainer Richard Baltas has long been a believer in the three “Ps” for his life in racing—passion, perseverance, and perfection. Te frst two are part of a person’s makeup, the third a little difcult to accomplish, but within reach if passion and perseverance triumph.

Trainer Richard Baltas is experiencing the best season of his 30-year career

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have some winning California-bred horses to work with—something that marks the Baltas barn. Standout Cal-breds for the trainer include grade I stakes winners Big Macher (a dual Cal-bred champion) and Spanish Queen, as well as other stakes horses Wild in the Saddle, Chaulk O Lattey, and Journey On. Te Baltas saga is not one of an overnight sensation, though he’s been on the upswing for just a couple of years. His recent success doesn’t tell the story of his long, sometimes struggling road to where he is in 2015. It’s almost a phoenix-from-theashes tale—a life flled with more ups and downs than some roller coasters. Over his 30 years in the business, he’s trained on his own more than once, worked as an assistant trainer just as much, and got out of the business a couple of times. But the siren song of hoof beats and whinnies always called him back. In his words: “I always wanted to be with the horses. I was very depressed when I wasn’t with them. I missed them.” Right now Baltas is on a big-time upswing with about 75 horses in training, including 18 Cal-breds. Tat’s a far cry from the one-horse (truly) stables he started with a couple of times. And he’s in the midst of the best year in his career, having posted more than $3 million in earnings by early autumn, good for 33rd on the national list of trainers. And he recently ended his all-time best Del Mar season by fnishing fourth with 17 wins and a win rate of 22%. It all added up to $932,956 in earnings. Baltas swells with pride when speaking about the Cal-bred program. He starts by saying, “You’re in a business where you have Jerry Hollendorfer and Bob Bafert and other trainers with very expensive horses. Te thing about the Cal-bred program is you don’t have to run against those horses in the beginning. But you still run for the same amount of money. “Tat gives the Cal-bred owners a fairer chance to make money. When you’re running for high-level [Cal-bred] allowance races, you’re running for maybe $90,000 to $100,000 in purse money. So by the time a Cal-bred reaches the place where he fgures to be a stakes horse, he’s already made maybe $200,000. And these Cal-bred stakes horses can compete in open company.” So how did Baltas get to this point? “You have to work hard, treat each horse as an individual, and have knowledge,” he said. “In that regard I think it helped me a lot to work for

a number of good people. I always worked for people that I thought were at the top of the game. For example, I worked at Spendthrift Farm and with trainers Tom Skifngton and Richard Mandella. You can learn something from everybody. It boils down to working hard, listening, and having a passion for the game. Results prove that all that pays of.” Tough born in the steel city of Gary, Ind., Baltas moved with his family to Huntington Beach as a youngster and grew up there. One might think surfng would be a major factor in a youngster’s years at that venue, but Baltas instead decided he wanted to be with horses from the time his father took him to the races as a teenager. “My passion was etched Baltas-trained Big Macher and jockey Rafael Bejarano win the forever when I got to go 2015 Pirate’s Bounty Stakes for Cal-breds at Del Mar to the Kentucky Derby in 1983 and saw Sunny’s Halo win,” he “I basically learned every job on the said. “Te next year I moved to Lexing- racetrack—starting at the bottom. Ten ton [Ky.] to go to the Kentucky Equine I was a foreman and assistant trainer for Institute and was assigned to Spend- Tom Skifngton in New York for two thrift Farm. years. He had some big clients, includ-

ing Shadwell Stable and Mrs. Virginia Payson.” After the Skifngton stint Baltas returned to California and began training on his own, saddling his frst winner, Latchburn, in 1991. During those early years, he says, he oversaw a small stable but he did have a “big horse” in 2001—Freedom Crest, whom he claimed out of a maiden race for $32,000 and eventually ran out $648,850. In the big year, Freedom Crest won the San Pasqual Handicap (gr. II) at Santa Anita and the Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. II) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita. In the latter he defeated multiple graded winners Skimming and Tiznow, who bounced back later in the year to win his second Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) at Belmont Park. “We went to the Classic, too,” Baltas said, “but we drew the 13 post and were never in the race.” Because the Belmont Park track is 11⁄2 miles in circumference, the 11⁄4-mile Classic started on the track’s frst turn, leaving Freedom Crest far out on the track with a daunting task to get into a prominent early position. Over the years Baltas trained a sta-

the belief that success breeds more success. From that single runner in 2011, his stable has grown to 50 horses in training at the racetrack, another 25 in various stages of training, and a group of some 40 workers. Te earnings ledger by year’s end will be by far the best he’s ever had training on his own. Big Macher recently returned to winning form in the Pirate’s Bounty Stakes at Del Mar while Spanish Queen has won this year’s American Oaks (gr. IT) and Honeymoon Stakes (gr. IIT). Wild in the Saddle won the Dream of Summer Stakes at Santa Anita and the Tranquility Lake Stakes at Del Mar. Displaying a sensible dose of humility as a part of his persona, Baltas is quick to point out that “you have to put in your time and you have to have good help.” No time to rest on your laurels, he believes, underscoring that with, “I always feel we can do better.” So what kind of advice would he give to young people thinking about getting into training? “First of all, they need to know that there are no shortcuts. You should work with people who are successful. You have to have a passion, and you have to persevere. “I had people ask me many times why I stayed in the business. Pretty soon they stopped asking me. And now I’m making good money and I’ve had some good success. You might say I’m livin’ the dream. It’s not easy sometimes, but I’ve always wanted to do it.”

California Flag Handicap

California-sired Forest Chatter, inside, holds off Somethings Unusual to win the California Flag Handicap on Santa Anita’s downhill turf course

LOVING THE TURF IT’S ALL BEEN DOWNHILL FROM THERE BY TRACY GANTZ

A

California-bred or California-sired runner who loves Santa Anita’s downhill turf course can make some serious money. Options include a variety of stakes—graded and Golden State Series—along with many lucrative allowance events. California-sired Forest Chatter is one of the best over that course. He kept his record on it perfect in the $100,500 California Flag Handicap, despite a valiant efort by Somethings Unusual. Forest Chatter has attempted the about 61⁄2 furlongs on the downhill turf fve times—breaking his maiden over it last January and winning three allowance optional claiming events prior to the California Flag. “He’s a good little horse, and he trains as good as you’d want,” said trainer Richard Mandella. In the California Flag, K Tirty Eight broke on top, but Forest Chatter soon

34

took over and was responsible for the halfmile fraction of :43.29. He held that lead into the stretch, when Somethings Unusual came charging up to challenge. “I was worried,” said Mandella. “At the eighth pole I was scared to death. Tat horse looked like he had dead aim on him.” Nevertheless, Forest Chatter gamely kept his head in front of Somethings

Unusual to the wire, eking out the win in 1:11.94. K Tirty Eight fnished third. Mike Smith has piloted Forest Chatter in all but one of his races, including all of his eforts on the downhill turf course. “He’s shown some fght before, but I was really surprised at how much he showed today,” Smith said. “We had to fght for all we were worth to pull it of. When you get one that really likes the hill, they’re hard to beat on it.” Herman Sarkowsky bred Forest Chatter, a 4-year-old gelded son of Dixie Chatter, a multiple graded stakes winner Sarkowsky also bred. Out of the Forest Wildcat mare Wild Forest, the Kentucky-bred ran twice in Sarkowky’s name. After Sarkowsky died in late 2014, his friends Martin and Pam Wygod, who raced Dixie Chatter with him, bought Forest Chatter from the estate. Mandella said he tried to get Forest Chatter to break his maiden for Sarkowsky when he was battling the long illness that led to his death. “I had him ready to run and tried to get him in the last day of the October meet last year, and the race didn’t go,” said Mandella. “Ten they put it up as an extra on the grass. But he was working so well on the dirt that I didn’t want to run him on the grass. I put him in anyway, and the race still didn’t go. And it turns out that’s exactly what he wants to do.” Te frst time Forest Chatter ofcially ran for the Wygods, he broke his maiden down the hill. All fve of his career victories have come over that course, and with the California Flag he raised his earnings to $230,510.

ersatility has marked Alert Bay’s career, whether in distance, surface, or racetrack, but he relishes a mile on the turf at Santa Anita. He is a perfect three for three under those conditions, most recently winning the $200,750 City of Hope Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) Sept. 27. Blaine Wright trains the California-bred out of his Golden Gate Fields headquarters for owner Peter Redekop. Alert Bay began his career there in 2013 with three seconds sprinting on Golden Gate’s Tapeta surface. He broke his maiden at Santa Anita—at a mile on the turf. “He can run on any surface,” said Wright. “Obviously, he’s best on the turf,

36

but he’s a very good horse on the dirt and even the Tapeta.” It would be another 10 months before Alert Bay again tackled a turf mile at Santa Anita. During that time he became a multiple stakes winner, collecting trophies at Santa Anita, Hastings Park, and Zia Park. He closed 2014 with a victory in the Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita. Alert Bay began 2015 by successfully stretching out to nine furlongs in the California Cup Turf Classic. He went on the road again, traveling back to his home base of Golden Gate and also starting at Los Alamitos and Emerald Downs, before Redekop suggested they try the City of Hope Mile. “Tis was Mr. Redekop’s decision to

run here,” said Wright, who admitted to having a diferent race selected. “He wanted to keep him stretched out.” Alert Bay faced a tough assignment with a new rider, Martin Garcia. Te City of Hope attracted a feld that included Shoemaker Mile Stakes (gr. IT) winner Talco, Del Mar Mile Handicap (gr. IIT) winner Avanzare, and last year’s City of Hope winner, Cal-bred Big Bane Teory. “Blaine told me to put him in a good spot where we wouldn’t get into trouble, follow the speed, and make your move outside,” said Garcia. Garcia rode to instructions, which allowed Alert Bay to run down Big Cazanova in the stretch and win by a length in 1:33.58. Avanzare fnished third. “Martin came out with a game plan,” said Wright. “He watched all of his races—he watched every one of them. He knew what he had underneath him.” Alert Bay earned $120,000 for winning the City of Hope, bringing his lifetime earnings to $954,495. It’s not bad for a $65,000 investment in what was supposed to be a pinhook. Te 4-year-old son of City Zip—Hickory, by Dushyantor, was foaled at Cal Fischer’s Madera Toroughbreds and bred by Tomas Newton Bell and the late Ross John McLeod.

Raised a Secret deserved a stakes victory because he has come close several times before. Owner Rodney Orr few to Southern California from his home in Silverton, Ore., and he and trainer Mark Glatt drove up from Southern California for the six-furlong race for California-breds and California-sired older runners. “He’s just a good, hard-trying horse who gives you a good, strong efort,” said Glatt. “He’s very consistent. Glatt began training Raised a Secret early in his 3-year-old season after the colt had started twice at Emerald Downs in Washington. Raised a Secret broke his maiden frst time out and fnished third in the Gottstein Futurity there. In Southern California he fnished second in the 2013 Grey Memo Stakes at Betfair Hollywood Park and third in the 2013 Real Good Deal Stakes at Del Mar. Since then he has performed well in al-

Richard’s Boy was coming of a stakes victory at Santa Rosa, and Wake Up Nick was making his frst start in more than 10 months after winning four stakes last year as a 2-year-old. Grade I winner Tamarando was the champion Cal-bred 2-year-old male of 2013, and Gangnam Guy and Cartoonist were stakes-placed. Richard’s Boy and Cartoonist few to the lead, setting quick fractions of :22.47 and :44.81. Raised a Secret sat in a perfect position in fourth, with Juan Hernandez aboard. Heading into the turn, Raised a Secret passed Wake Up Nick on the outside, and he nailed Cartoonist deep in the turn. Tat left Richard’s Boy, who wasn’t going to give up easily. Te two of them battled the entire stretch. Raised a Secret got up in the last jump to win by a head in 1:09.14. “He made us sweat a little,” said Glatt. “Te photo took forever.” Orr likes Raised a Secret’s grit. “He gives you a really honest efort every single time he runs,” said the owner. Dahlberg Farms bred Raised a Secret, a 5-year-old son of Songandaprayer—Sensitive Soul, by Bernstein. Dahlberg bred and raced the dam, who won the 2008 Magali Farms Stakes on Gold Rush day at Hollywood. Agent Dana Halvorson bought Raised a Secret for Orr at the 2011 Barretts fall yearling sale, getting him for $15,000. “Dana really liked him,” said Orr. “He thought he was very strong-looking horse and very well-balanced.” Tat $15,000 has proved a wise investment. Raised a Secret has now earned $400,610, with fve wins, seven seconds, and six thirds in 24 starts.

Te Durango, Mexico, native galloped horses at San Luis Rey Downs for Charlie Whittingham a few decades back, but he has been working for Lovingier since 1996. “He manages the stallions, does all the sales prep on the farm, and oversees the breaking of the horses,” Lovingier said.

“We break between 100 and 150 young horses a year, and then breed approximately 150 mares as well. Gregorio oversees that, too.” Rincon gets up before sunrise and right away checks on all the horses on the property. “He checks to make sure no one is sick

and that they have enough water,” Jessica Rincon said. “Other people could do it, but he’d rather do it himself. He’s pretty much working all the time.” Rincon doesn’t just manage the property. He also helps with shoeing, giving shots, and even hauling horses to the track on occasion. “He has a real eye for if a horse is sick,” Lovingier said. “Horses can’t talk to you, but he can look at a horse and say, ‘No, this horse isn’t quite right.’ Te other day I thought a mare might be getting colicky, but he said, ‘She’s fne; she’ll get up and shake it of.’ A minute later, she did.” During rare downtime, Lovingier and Rincon still trail ride together. “He’s just an amicable guy,” Lovingier said of the ranch manager. “He gets along with everyone.” Of the farm’s seven stallions, Rincon says that Awesome Gambler is his favorite. Te son of Coronado’s Quest—Wedding March, by Deputy Minister, is the sire of 2012 California champion 3-yearold flly Willa B Awesome, winner of the Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I). “He’s a nice horse,” Rincon said. Awesome Gambler’s progeny have earned nearly $3 million. Rincon is hands on with one of the farm’s newer stallions, Merit Man, by With Distinction—Precise Strike, by Precise End. Te four-time winner entered stud in 2015, after victories in stakes at Del Mar, Santa Anita, and Gulfstream Park. He fnished second by a nose to Hightail in the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint in 2012. Daughter Jessica manages Lovacres’ billing and paperwork, and translates for Rincon when needed. “He’s always making sure the horses are safe, and caring for anyone that is injured,” Jessica said. “During foaling season he acts as the watchman while making sure everything is handled at the training barn at the same time. He checks on all the horses again at night.” Lovacres Ranch has been located at its current property for less than a decade, but Rincon has been there for every minute, watching his family grow and becoming ever more involved. Te four Rincons are key to the farm’s efciency and the utmost devotion and care that the horses receive.

JOE PARKER BY EMILY SHIELDS

PHOTOS COURTESY OF JOE PARKER

CREATING QUALITY CAL-BREDS

wenty years ago Joe Parker served as president of the California Toroughbred Breeders Association and president of California Toroughbred Sales. Tough his political days are long behind him and his booming insurance business takes up most of his time, Parker has not strayed far from his original goal of breeding and selling Toroughbreds. Occasionally, when he isn’t able to sell a horse, Parker will agree to race it. Enter stakes winner Our Pure Creation, a homebred Parker didn’t plan to own. He always did have an interest in horses, however.

Parker, a Texas native who moved to Fresno as a 4-yearold, grew up on a farm and originally dreamt of riding jumpers. “Tere aren’t too many opportunities for that, so I outgrew it,” Parker said. “But everyone always thinks they’d like to own a racehorse.” Parker enjoyed going to the races and handicapping, but it wasn’t until well after he left Fresno State that he “got around to looking at the breeding industry.” “We claimed a flly, she won, then we lost her, and later she produced a stakes horse,” Parker said. “I thought, ‘Well, it might make sense to try to do that.’ Ten we claimed another one, lost her, and she produced a stakes

horse, too. Tat’s when I had to do something about it.” Via a client, Parker found himself in Kentucky and watched Genuine Risk win the 1980 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) live. Parker soon owned enough mares that he bought a farm in California, Peach Tree Farm. “I wanted to fnd a piece of property and fll it with horses, so I did,” Parker said. “I added a fve-eighths-mile track, with rails inside and outside, and had a riding arena with lights. Te game was to sell yearlings. I didn’t have a lot of success.” Parker started sending mares to Kentucky, breeding them to stallions there, and returning them to California to foal and be bred back, making the foals California-breds. “I did very well with that,” he said. “Tat’s what Our Pure Creation is.” Parker’s Smart Strike mare Creative Karen was bred to grade II winner Pure Prize in Kentucky, then returned to California to foal. She was bred back to Parker’s A.P. Indy son Crossword, who died later that season. Although the Crossword colt, named Mauco, never won, the Pure Prize flly looked to be a nice prospect for a Barretts sale. Two weeks before going through the ring, however, Our Pure Creation kicked the back of her stall. Te injury was enough that Parker opted to withdraw the flly from the sale and turn her out on the farm. “She kept growing, so I eventually just sent her to Utah to be broke,” Parker

recalled. “Ten she fnishes training, and it’s time to race her.” Our Pure Creation debuted on Sept. 8, 2013, in a six-furlong event at the Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex Park. A pair of runners from the Bob Bafert stable went of as the frst two choices, but Our Pure Creation trounced the feld, romping by 51⁄4 lengths. Trainer Jef Bonde guided the flly through her conditions, adding three allowance wins on both turf and dirt to her resume. After she won two in a row in 2014, Bonde opted for the $125,750 Spring Fever Stakes at Santa Anita Park. Our Pure Creation went of as the favorite but fnished ffth. She ran back in the $96,560 Daisycutter Handicap at Del Mar, where she trailed the feld. “She got hurt out of that,” Parker explained, “but she came back strong. I was thinking about shipping her East, but the trainer said we should try the Daisycutter again.” Transferred to the care of trainer Val Brinkerhof, Our Pure Creation ran back 364 days later, fnishing third in the Daisycutter and earning herself valuable black type. In September, she was third again, this time in the $108,330 Tranquility Lake Stakes. Our Pure Creation nabbed a stakes win next out, in the $100,250 California Distaf Handicap, originally scheduled for the turf but switched to the main track because of rain. She sat third in a feld of fve rivals, then rallied to score by 11⁄2 lengths under jockey Fernando Perez in 1:16.13 for 61⁄2 furlongs. Our Pure Creation has fve wins in 14 starts for earnings of $261,648. Parker will keep Our Pure Creation to breed in the next few seasons. “She’s a nice, big, lovely mare,” he said, “kind of scopy. I expect to get nice foals out of her.” Parker sold Peach Tree Farm fve years ago, and he sold Our Pure Creation’s dam, Creative Karen, in foal to Lucky Pulpit. His insurance business, under the banner Parker General Insurance, began in 1964 and is thriving. His Equine Insurance company special-

izes in equine mortality and liability insurance, ofering policies for farms and ranches. After he became a member of the CTBA in 1979, Parker found himself on the board of directors and then as secretary of the organization. “While I was vice president, the president was voted of and suddenly I became the president,” he said. Parker served as president in 1994 and 1995. “I was around when it was a tough time,” he said. “Some would say I did a good job, and some would say I didn’t. But if you have about 50% of people, then you probably did okay. I enjoyed that part of it while I was there.” Despite the success of Our Pure Cre-

ation, Parker isn’t looking to add more racing stock. “I’ll probably add a mare or two during the November sales,” he said. “I have entered a few claims in for fllies. I have about six mares right now.” Parker misses the farm but knew it was time to cut back. “Tis business will give you all it’s got,” he said. “Sometimes you can get really lucky and it’s a fun business, so fun that you don’t have to be making money. I do love horses, and I have a lot of friends in it. But with the two insurance ofces, I can only spend so much time thinking about horses.” With success coming in both areas, Parker has shown he can balance his work and his favorite pastime.

ENDOMETRITIS IN MARES MANAGING MARES’ REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH BY HEATHER SMITH THOMAS

B

roodmare management can be challenging. One of the things that can complicate this is endometritis (infammation in the uterus), a common problem, especially in older mares.

ANNE M. EBERHARDT

Dr. James Bailey, reproductive specialist at Royal Vista Southwest in Purcell, Okla., says diagnosis should include a biopsy of the endometrium. Te biopsy may show an infammatory cell type that is associated with bacteria or fungus. Te mare may have a clean culture, but a biopsy may reveal endometriosis—an infammatory condition that’s not associated with infection.

“Cultures often have some false negatives and false positives,” said Bailey. “But when we put the culture together with a biopsy and look at this, the pathologist can tell us whether there is infammation or not, and the cell types. If there are neutrophils among the cell types in the infammation, we usually think there is a pathogen involved. Neutrophils are the white blood cells that fght infection.” Problem mares are divided into those that have infammation without infection (endometriosis) or those with infammation because of infection (endometritis). “Endometriosis might be residual infammation from a previous foaling,” said Bailey. “Sometimes it’s due to infammation caused by semen (post-breeding endometritis).” Tere may be nothing

wrong, but the immune system is still in combat mode. Bailey usually treats these mares and then does another biopsy a month later. “Most conditions we pick up on a biopsy are correctable except for glandular fbrosis,” he said. “Te pathologist who reads the biopsy can usually look at the degree of glandular fbrosis and give an estimate of this mare’s level of fertility—of her chances of carrying a foal to term. “We approach the endometriosis infammation with a protocol using anti-infammatory drugs. We use DMSO, dexamethasone, and usually administer antibiotics. “If there is infection, we can often detect it by using small-volume lavage and cytology, and pick up the presence of bacterial or fungal elements. Ten with a culture we can usually identify the organism and do sensitivity testing to determine which antibiotic is most appropriate. “We diferentiate between tissue infection and luminal infections (within the uterine space). Long-standing pseudomonas infections are often tissue infections, and we think it is more benefcial to treat those mares systemically than with an intra-uterine drug. We may put them on a systemic drug for 10 days. All too often, treatment is too short, for these severe pathogens, and the infection comes back.” Te old method was to treat these mares every other day with a uterine infusion with antibiotics, but this is generally not successful when treating severe pathogens. “We can successfully treat pseudomonas, Klebsiella, E. coli, and streptococcal infections systemically. In severe cases, where mares have fuid in the uterus (which may be of-color and can be determined by ultrasound), we combine this with lavage and an infusion of antibiotics. We often lavage the uterus with saline and use oxytocin to help

but to not being persistent enough in treatment,” Bailey said.

Ultrasound is one tool employed to determine whether a mare has fuid in her uterus

facilitate uterine clearance. “If we have a couple of antibiotics that the organism is susceptible to, we might put the mare on systemic treatment for 10 days and do uterine lavage and infusion until we get the uterus cleared. Sometimes we use two diferent antibiotics that work well together and complement one another—getting much more beneft than with either one alone. Many times, it’s like 2 + 2 = 7.” Other kinds of infections often seen include yeast and fungal infections. Yeasts usually grow readily in a culture, but fungal infections can be hard to grow. “When we see an infammatory process that we think is involved with an infectious agent and we are not getting anything on culture, we always consider doing a fungal culture,” said Bailey. “It has to be done on specifc media, and it could take 10 or 12 days for the fungus to begin growing. “If we fnd fungal elements, there are some excellent drugs available for intra-uterine use (such as Chlotrimazole) that may be able to clear up some of the worst fungal infections like Aspergillus in mares that in the past were very difcult to treat.” When a mare has a uterine infection, there are other medications that can be used in addition to antibiotics, such as fuids that bufer and set bacteria up for the antibiotic to work better. “Sometimes a person must be very persistent. One cycle of therapy may not get the cure accomplished, especially in the older mare. We have to be thorough in covering all the bases.” Bailey cited as an example, a mare with Klebsiella infection that the owner had struggled with for two years. Te mare responded to one round of 10 days’ systemic treatment along with uterine lavage and treatment. “Many times failure is not due to improper diagnosis,

“It’s important to examine the uterus for indications of PBE (post-breeding infammation), or accumulation of fuids,” said Bailey. “Usually, the mare is just having a bad reaction to the seminal plasma. In most breeds we can eliminate some of the seminal plasma problem by using artifcial insemination. If the mare is bred by live cover, veterinarians often use antibiotics, lavage, oxytocin, etc. to rid the uterus of unwanted infammation products, so that when the embryo comes down into the uterus from the fallopian tube at about 5.5 days post-ovulation, the uterus will be a good environment for maturation of the embryo.” Dr. Mats H. Troedsson, professor of equine reproduction and director of the Gluck Equine Research Center in Lexington, Ky., says we know much more now about endometritis than we did 25 years ago. “At that point we thought all forms of endometritis were caused by bacterial or fungal infection,” said Troedsson. “Now we know it can also be simple infammation caused by breeding. Every time a mare is bred, the semen itself causes infammation—which is necessary to facilitate clearance of the uterus. Te stallion ejaculates directly into the mare’s uterus, rather than into the vagina, so there are billions of sperm cells, seminal plasma, and debris deposited into the uterus. When the mare is bred naturally, there is always some bacterial contamination.” Only a few thousand sperm reach the oviduct and are involved with fertilization. “Te rest of the sperm, and the seminal plasma and bacterial contamination, all must be cleared from the uterus,” said Troedsson. “Tis happens very efectively in most mares within 24 to 48 hours. Te infammatory response to sperm is normal, and this is what triggers the mechanism for clearing the uterus. “But about 10-15% of broodmares don’t clear the uterus efectively. Tey have a delayed clearance and develop a persistent breeding-induced endometritis. Tese are the same mares that may easily develop persistent infectious endometritis. If these mares are challenged with bacteria or with semen, they fail to clear the uterus. “Persistent breeding-induced endometritis is caused by an impaired physical mechanism—the uterine muscles fail to contract efectively during Bio-flm is bacterial growth on a solid the peak of infammation. One surface with several different bacteria of our studies a few years ago that help each other and build a matrix in kind of a plaque showed this may be caused by over-production of an infammatory mediator, nitric oxide. Tis causes relaxation of the uterine muscles, rather than contraction. Prostaglandin is another infammatory mediator that causes the muscles to contract, and we believe that this is what clears the uterus. Tus, there seems to be an imbalance between the infammatory mediator (nitric oxide) and prostaglandin in these mares. “Te problem can be side-passed by giving these mares oxytocin or a uterine lavage—one or two liters of bufered saline solution— DR. CHECK MARES IN THE FALL Broodmare owners should always be thinking about the next breeding season, looking at mares in the fall before they cease cycling. “This is a good time to do a basic work-up on open mares,” said Dr. James Bailey of Royal Vista Southwest. “Our work-up here at Royal Vista includes palpation, ultrasonic evaluation, examination of the cervix, uterine biopsy, and uterine culture. The veterinarian might also want to culture for anaerobic bacteria as well as fungal infections. This will often depend on the age of the mare and the problems that have been encountered with her in the past. “With any mare you’ve attempted to breed that is not in foal, it’s very important to do this in the fall. At this time we would also try to diagnose and evaluate any conformational problems and consider doing a Caslick’s procedure. We also evaluate the mare for any cervical or uterine injury, or anatomical problems.”

fammation and infection very well,” said Troedsson. “Teir immune system clears the infection. In the mares that have problems, we looked at cytokine expression in the uterine lining at 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours after they had been bred. We found that the susceptible and resistant mares do the same thing for the frst 12 hours. Ten the resistant mares clear the infammation within 24 to 36 hours and the susceptible mares fail to do so. “When we looked at the cytokine response, we saw a marked diference between the two groups of mares between two and six hours. Even at that early stage, after introduction of the infammation, the mare decides whether the uterus will be cleared during the frst 24 to 36 hours or not. So we now know it is important to treat these mares early if we want to correct the infammatory course—for efective clearance of the uterus. We know that they can respond to treatment early on, and we don’t have to wait for the disease to happen. “Many people—including our research group—thought the pro-infammatory cytokines may be skewed one way or the other in these susceptible mares. But we found that they seem to do the same thing in both the resistant and the susceptible mares. Te problem a susceptible mare seems to have is that infammatory-modulating cytokines are not as active early on during the infammation, and this seems to allow the infammation to get out of control. “With both the infectious and the breeding-induced endometritis, we tested some additional treatments, using immuno-modulating drugs to address the infammation—such as dexamethasone (a corticosteroid) and Settle—a bacterial cell wall extract which is used in both endometritis and respiratory disease and is supposed to have an immune-stimulating role. “Both drugs afected the pro-infammatory cytokines, but they did not afect the modulating cytokines. In other words, the drugs did not restore the normal pattern of infammatory response in susceptible mares. But they made changes to the DR. JAMES BAILEY

often combined with oxytocin, another hormone that causes uterine contraction. Using these treatments, we are more successful in getting these mares pregnant than we have been in the past. “Another thing we saw a few years ago, with experiments looking at social interaction between stallions and mares, is that if a stallion is with a herd of mares, he teases and mounts them fairly often, several times a day, but he may not penetrate or ejaculate each time. Many cases of infectious endometritis are easy to treat with We found that this physical medications. contact and teasing stimulates the mares to release oxytocin, which helps immediately. trigger uterine contractions and physical “Tere are a few mares that have great clearance.” difculty in clearing debris from the uterMares bred naturally, by a stallion living us. infammatory response, and this is interesting enough for us to continue to work on this and try to fnd an alternative way to help these susceptible mares clear the infammation.” Most cases of infectious endometritis are easy to treat with antibiotics in the uterus, says Troedsson. Still, some of these mares are difcult to get pregnant. Tey culture clean but become infected by their next cycle. It is possible that treatment could bring in new bacteria, according to Troedsson. Tere have been speculations during the last few years—and some research to support the speculation—that there could be local endometrial changes. “Some of these mares produce a lot of mucus,” said Troedsson. “If you put antibiotics into the uterus, mucus could stand in the way of the antibiotics reaching the bacteria. Tere are some additional treatments, such as N-acetylcysteine, that can be used to break down mucus.” Other reports have suggested that the cilia in the uterine lining could be

non-functional in these mares, making it more difcult to clear fuid and debris from the uterus. Scientists don’t yet have data to prove this, says Troedsson. Another thought is that perhaps the uterine lining is building up a bio-flm. “Tis is bacterial growth on a solid surface, with several diferent bacteria that help each other and build a matrix in kind of a plaque,” said Troedsson, “which makes it very difcult for any antibiotic to penetrate and be efective against these bacteria. “Tis has been described in the human mouth and urinary bladder. Tis explains why some urinary infections are hard to eliminate. Bacteria have found a way to build a structure around themselves to protect against being reached by antibiotics. It has been suggested that maybe the same thing happens in the uterus. Tis has led many practitioners to combine antibiotic treatment with other chemicals for infectious endometritis cases. “Another possibility is research data from a Danish group of researchers at the Veterinary College in Copenhagen. Tey

found that some of the bacteria that invade the uterine tissues are present in a dormant state. Tese bacteria are not replicating, just hibernating, making them very difcult to reach with antibiotics. Tey may, for various reasons we don’t understand, wake up or fare up at some point and cause a problem, and then go back to dormant stage and become resistant to antibiotics. “Te key here would be to combine antibiotic treatment with something that stimulates these bacteria to get out of hibernation and become more accessible to the antibiotic. “We may be seeing more pregnancy losses than in the past because there may be factors in the uterus that play a role after we get these problem mares pregnant. And if they have dormant Streptococci, maybe those bacteria sit there and then fare up and cause abortion at the end of the pregnancy. You solve one problem and face another. As a horse owner, this can be frustrating. But we are making progress.”

The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS). While every effort is made to prevent errors and omissions, California Thoroughbred cannot guarantee their complete and total accuracy. A dagger (†) indicates a stallion that has been pensioned or has died, a dot (•) that he is now standing elsewhere (sires no longer standing in California remain on these lists until their last Cal-bred crop turns 3 years old), a double dagger (‡) that he is not standing in California in 2015 but will stand in the state in 2016. Freshman sires are highlighted in bold text. Statistics cover racing in North America (U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico), England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) only. Stakes winners and wins follow TJCIS stakes rules. Racing statistics through October 18, 2015.

These statistics are for active California-based sires with a minimum of 50 foals of racing age, ranked here by their lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI.) The statistics shown here are compiled by The Jockey Club Information Systems (TJCIS).
