Kurt Schindler is a principal at ELS and directs the firm’s historic and seismic renovation projects. Over his professional career he has been involved in master planning, programming, design, and feasibility studies for dozens of historic and cultural facilities. He possesses a special expertise in assessing the adaptive reuse or upgrade potential of existing buildings. His award-winning historic renovation projects include the renovation and restoration of the national landmark 1903-33 Mission Inn, in Riverside, California, the 1939 Martin Luther King, Jr. Civic Center in Berkeley, California, the 1929 Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, the 1923 Union Pacific Railroad Station in Anaheim, California, the 1912 16th Street Train Station Re-Use Plan in Oakland, California, the 1904 Temple Sherith Israel Seismic Upgrade in San Francisco, California, and the 1923 Grand Theater Center for the Arts in Tracy, California, the 1928 Oakland Fox Theatre, the 1927 California Theatre renovation and expansion, the 1929 Pleasanton Firehouse Art Center in Pleasanton, and the 1894 St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in San Francisco.

He recently completed renovation of the 1915 Old Administration Building at Fresno City College and the 1934 Civic Auditorium in San Jose.

Andrew Wolfram is an optimistic advocate for building regeneration, urban architecture, and place-making and its power to advance responsible development.

In his 25 years of practice, he has promoted the value of historically-significant sites and their role in providing cultural vitality to our cities and neighborhoods. As the former head of the Preservation + Reuse practice at Perkins+Will, he led the transformation of some of the Bay Area’s most significant historic landmarks into vibrant and relevant new uses, including the Ferry Building, the Presidio Landmark, the Presidio Officers’ Club, and 140 New Montgomery Street.

Mr. Schindler received his Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. Mr. Schindler is active with the California Preservation Foundation and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology, and has presented at the League of California Cities.

He is the President of the San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission, a Trustee of the California Preservation Foundation, past President of DOCOMOMO, Vice President of the Golden Gate Chapter of Lambda Alpha International, and longtime member of San Francisco Architectural Heritage, ULI and SPUR. He earned his Master of Architecture, Planning and Preservation from Columbia University.

Lauren Weiss Bricker, PhD California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Lauren Weiss Bricker is a Professor of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona where she co-coordinates the historic preservation program, and is director of the ENV Archives-Special Collections. She was a chair of the National Council for Historic Preservation and the California’s State Historical Resources Commission. She writes on American 6

architecture and historic preservation, and has curated several architectural exhibitions.

She is completing the book Designing the Modern American House.

J. Kip Drabeck Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company, Los Angeles J. Kip Drabeck has been with Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company since 1995, with over 50 years of experience in the construction industry and 40 years in Project Management. His career began with a family residential/commercial construction business, then several years overseas working in Hong Kong, and later returning to Los Angeles to manage a wide variety of commercial and institutional projects. His wide range of experience and expertise have given him the ability to guide a project through design development, conceptual budgeting, pre-construction and construction services, design assist, design build, estimating, bid-solicitation, value-engineering, contract award and administration.

Debra Gerod, FAIA La Jolla Debra Gerod joined Gruen Associates, a 65-person broad-based planning and architectural firm, in 1988 and became a partner in 2002.

Her work includes large-scale, significant civic and cultural projects such as courthouses, embassies, performing arts centers, museums, libraries and transportation projects. She has created and/or led over two dozen collaborative teams on projects valued at more than $3 billion. Gerod has been on the forefront

of the sustainable design movement throughout her career, starting with her focus on sustainable design at the University of Colorado/Boulder. She is the Vice President/President Elect for the American Institute of Architect’s Los Angeles Chapter, a member of the Board of the AIA California Council and serves on Dean’s Advisory Council for Woodbury University. Gerod served on the Board of the ACE Mentor Program/Los Angeles from 2004-2015.

Making of the United States: A Theme Study (2013). He is the former chair of the California State Historical Resources Commission and a past member of the Board of Directors and Chair of Preservation Advocacy at the LA Conservancy. He has received awards for the design of several historic building rehabilitations, and holds a bachelor’s degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara and a master’s degree in urban design from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Katie E Horak Architectural Resources Group, Los Angeles Katie E. Horak is a Principal at Architectural Resources Group and manages the firm’s Downtown Los Angeles office.

She has more than 15 years of experience in the field of historic resource management in both the public and private sectors. In addition to her work at ARG, she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at USC, where she teaches graduate-level courses in historic resource documentation methods, and is the founding President of the Southern California Chapter of DOCOMOMO US.

Luis Hoyos, RA California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Luis Hoyos is an architect and Professor of Architecture, teaching historic preservation and urban design. He serves on the Board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is a member of the Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board.

He was appointed by President Obama to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in 2016. He was national co-chair for the NPS American Latino Scholars Experts Panel, and co-editor of American Latinos and the

Chandler McCoy Getty Conservation Institute, Los Angeles Chandler McCoy has worked for more than 25 years in the field of historic preservation and planning. He manages the Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative at the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), where he develops publications and technical materials, creates education and training opportunities, and manages conservation projects. Prior to joining the GCI, he was Associate Director for Planning and Design for the Presidio Trust in San Francisco, where he helped lead the transformation of the Presidio from a military post to a financially self-sufficient National Park.

Prior to that he worked as a Historical Architect for the National Park Service in New York City. He received training in architectural conservation in 1992 at ICCROM in Rome. He is a registered architect and a LEED-accredited professional. He founded the Northern California Chapter of DOCOMOMO-US and served as its president for many years, and also served on the board of San Francisco Heritage.

Zoltan E. Pali, FAIA SPF:architects, Culver City Zoltan E. Pali is the founder and design principal of SPF:architects (SPF:a).

Launched in 1990, SPF:a has designed projects ranging from custom-built single-family residences to large civic infrastructure and privately developed commercial buildings.

With Pali at its helm, SPF:a has been recognized with over 80 national and regional design awards, including an American Architecture Award in 2014 for the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts, a National AIA Honor Award for the design of Somis Hay Barn, a AIA|LA Presidential Award for leading the Executive Architecture team on the $300-million renovation and expansion of the Getty Villa Museum, and a Preservation Design Award in 2017 for the Morgan Phoa Library & Residence. Having gained recognition for his elegant minimalist approach to California modernism, Zoltan was inducted into the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 2005; he was one of the youngest architects to have ever received the designation.

TRUSTEES AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION & RESTORATION Bing Kong Tong Stabilization and Exterior Restoration Isleton The Bing Kong Tong represents a significant example of Chinese American architecture, as well as a tangible connection to the cultural heritage of Isleton. Erected in 1926, this tong, or meeting hall, was a community center organized under a benevolent society. It operated a Chinese language school and offered the local Chinese Americans social services and a place to gather. The benevolent society also organized local events and festivals.

This remarkable building tells the story of this agricultural town's development through the construction of levees, and the operation of canneries with immigrant labor. More than that, however, it tells the story of Chinese pioneers in California, people who traveled across the Pacific Ocean in search of prosperity in a distant land.

These people established their own families of immigrants through community organizations such as the Bing Kong Tong.

Isleton was the only Asian community constructed in the Delta during the heyday of agriculture in the 1920s. The historic district was the last in a series of Chinese/Japanese American sections of town built on the same site since 1878.

It served as the cultural, recreational, and commercial center for farm and cannery laborers.

California Preservation Awards 2018

The Bing Kong Tong was constructed in 1926 following a massive fire that destroyed much of Isleton. Chinese laborers constructed it, in contrast with other buildings in the Chinese district that were re-built at this time by local non-Chinese contractors. The style of the building with its central flagpole, shaped parapet with peaked corners, and second story facade balcony, is distinctly Chinese. Galvanized sheet metal was used to sheath the building, as well as most of the other buildings in the district, to prevent another catastrophic fire.

The building was vacated in the 1960s when the canneries closed. A flood damaged the building in 1972. It was sold to the Isleton Brannan Andrus Historical Society in 1994. The building condition prior to the start of the project was dire. The building was leaning several degrees. It had been shored on the interior, which was the only reason it had remained standing. The roof was leaking badly, and pigeons had gotten into the attic space. There was so much pigeon dung above the second-floor ceiling that it was severely bowed. If it hadn't been for the drought, the ceiling would certainly have collapsed once the dung became wet. The sheet metal exterior cladding was corroded, and many panels were missing. Much of the sheathing beneath the paneling was rotten. The lower level of the facade was 14

missing, as was the second story projecting balcony. In addition to the pigeons, wasps had infested the walls.

Planning for this project began in 2003, with the first (unsuccessful) application for a California Cultural and Heritage Endowment (CCHE) Grant. Ultimately, two CCHE Grants, along with Federal Block grants from HUD, funded the project. While initially a single comprehensive project was proposed, given the extremely poor condition and the lack of funding, the decision was made to phase the project. Phase 1 included a new roof, all elements of the seismic upgrade involving the building envelope and foundation, and all exterior walls, including the restoration of the facade from historic photographs. All sheet metal siding was replaced using new galvanized steel panels in a pattern matching the original. Phase 2 will convert the building into a museum at the first floor and a community space on the second.

This project (Phase 1) involved the entire building exterior, including the roof, facade, and side and rear walls. The facade was completely recreated using remaining, deteriorated building fabric and historic photographs as reference.

Foundations for future shear walls were also installed at this time. All sheet metal siding was replaced using new

Besides being the right thing to do, use of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards was essential here. First, the project was funded with CCHE grants that required compliance with the Standards. The project also went through CEQA review, also requiring Standards compliance. The Bing Kong Tong is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, as a contributor to the Isleton Chinese and Japanese Historic District.

Evanston Court

Located at 385 South Marengo Avenue in Pasadena, Evanston Court is a 24-unit condominium project centered around the National Register listed Evanston Inn. Standing on a one-acre site, the Inn is the last remaining wood framed hotel in the city, though its state had deteriorated substantially until the site was purchased in 2012. Built in 1897 in the Queen Anne style, within one year the hotel expanded with an American Foursquare addition. Its deep front yard setback and substantial presence held hierarchy on the site plan as the additional structures were placed to the side and rear. The new architecture symbolizes the idea of the proprietors business evolving over time into new Craftsman townhouses and Triple Decker flats. In order to hide required parking, the 11,753 square foot Inn was lifted up and rested on beams and cribbing while a subterranean garage was built below.

The project’s modern condo program incorporated and preserved historic features throughout.

Considered the birthplace of the Los Angeles region, San Gabriel has a wealth of cultural resources—from archaeological sites to twentieth-century historic landmarks and cohesive neighborhoods.

San Gabriel’s Historic Preservation and Cultural Resources Ordinance advances historic preservation and cultural resource management by allowing the City to proactively respond to 21st-century challenges, effectively managing change to historic properties, protecting neighborhood character, and preserving significant Native American sites and resources.

Key components of the new law include effective provisions for the management of archaeological and Native American resources; criteria and process for landmark designation; establishment of Conservation Districts; strong provisions for review of demolition permits; tiered, streamlined project review; and clear nexus between the new local ordinance and state law.

This Cultural Landscape Report was undertaken to guide the National Park Service and its partners in ongoing efforts to interpret, preserve, and enhance the historic cultural landscape of Forts Baker, Barry, and Cronkite, a National Registerlisted district of 2,700 acres on the Marin Headlands across the Golden Gate from San Francisco. The first volume provides a comprehensive landscape history of the three adjacent military reservations from the 1860s through the present, with illustrative plans that depict landscape change during five historic periods. West Hollywood Commercial Survey & Preservation Website West Hollywood

The 2016 City of West Hollywood Historic Resources project included a commercial and nonresidential survey of properties constructed between the town’s founding in 1895 and 1975, a historic context statement covering the period from 1895 to 1984 (when the City was incorporated), and a new historic preservation website with a searchable database of designated and potential cultural resources. This was a project focused on documentation, identification, communication, and digitalization.

The purpose of the survey was to update the inventory of commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings throughout the city according to current best practices.

The properties identified included a vast range from late 19th century streetcar development to modern high-rise office towers. Collectively and individually they tell the story of West Hollywood’s unique arts and entertainment history, from the music venues of the Sunset Strip to the art galleries of the La Cienega design district. Eligible resources also represent its history as a center of the LGBTQ community from nascent civil rights activism to the AIDS crisis.

The very narrow footprint of the building and landlocked property boundaries on the south and east sides scared many potential developers away, but the current owner saw plenty of potential in the beautiful building. Federal Historic Tax Credits were pursued for the Commercial Exchange Building renovation. The Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation were followed in detail throughout the project interior and exterior, with ongoing review by the State Historic Preservation Office.

Part 3 is complete and ready for submission, along with the formal nomination to the National Register. This project demonstrates high quality materials restoration and craftsmanship along with thoughtful design incorporated into the historic structure. Choices were made throughout this project to restore the buildings historic fabric – including the original building entrance which was based off of historic photographs. Missing and damaged exterior materials such as the terracotta were repaired or replicated and replaced by skilled craftsmen.

Gilmore Gas Station

As part of a comprehensive rehabilitation project in 2015, the Gilmore Gas Station was reutilized as a Starbucks coffee shop.

To accommodate the new use, two existing doorways beneath the canopy were adapted as a walk-up pick-up window and a drive-through pick-up window. Additionally, an existing window on the south elevation was adapted as the walk-up ordering window. A small fenced-in seating area was constructed around the walk-up window. The interior of the building was largely removed to accommodate its new use. The original office space now functions as Starbuck’s front-of-the-house, while the former lift station serves as the back-of-the-house.

A restroom at the southern corner of the gas station was reused as a publicly accessible restroom.

The project comprised the repair, restoration, rehabilitation and structural enhancement of the Depot, and was treated as an adaptive reuse to be repurposed as a restaurant.

The majority of the exterior was restored to its original appearance. To accommodate future uses and environmental considerations, the project is more accurately defined as a rehabilitation. The interior of the historic public spaces, including wall and floor finishes, were restored.

Where needed, modifications were designed to reflect a historic reference consistent with and/or reminiscent of the original design but not mimic original features. As the original platform was not able to be salvaged, an expanded platform was constructed. A new modern design canopy was constructed above.

Roble Gymnasium Rehabilitation Stanford

The project was a significant remodel, and included all new building systems, full fire sprinkler system, an extensive seismic retrofit, and accessibility upgrades including a restroom reconfiguration and new exterior ramps.

The building underwent programmatic alterations, transforming it into a flexible theater. A control booth and performer support spaces were constructed within the gym, windows were blacked out, a pipe grid was installed, and all new theatrical production systems were provided. Work was performed so that if reversed in the future, original features will be present. The project also added an “Art Gym,” where non-art major student can explore multi-media art and performance in a flexible space.

The exterior plaster façade was carefully rehabilitated, and incompatible features were removed and replaced with historically compatible ones. Existing day tile roofs were removed, new membranes installed on the seismicallyreinforced roof decks, then reinstalled in the same roof plane whence they came. Existing remnants of the original landscape plan were preserved, and the new planting palette recalled the original Olmsted plan.

Historic sports venues are among the most threatened building types due to the difficulty of adaptive reuse and demands of the sports business. The Rose Bowl Renovation project was the result of significant civic and community investment that achieved improved function, rehabilitated and modernized the National Historic Landmark Rose Bowl stadium, and restored its economic viability. The project was the culmination of a decade long search for a compatible design and economic solution.

Improvements include a new pavilion to replace an outdated and non-historic pavilion for press and premium seating; creative life safety improvements achieved with minimal alterations by selectively widening tunnels and vomitoria; improved concessions and restroom facilities; and new video and sign boards that are visually coherent, and more compatible. The solution is a template for the preservation of the few remaining historic stadiums.

The Francis House Calistoga

The restoration of the Francis House to its original prominence has reinvigorated locals and visitors alike in this Northern Napa County community. Built in 1886 in the authentic Second Empire style, the Francis House is the only stone building left in Calistoga and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

While it began as a family home for a prominent local merchant, James H. Francis, the property was converted to a hospital in 1918 and functioned in that capacity until 1964. During the 1920s and early 1930s two additions were constructed at the rear of the house to meet the growing demands. The hospital closed in 1965 and remained uninhabited for the next 50 years, and the property sustained substantial deterioration during this period of neglect. The restoration included stabilization of the exterior stone walls, which included grouting the void space between the exterior and interior wythes and stitching the wythes together with stainless steel rods and epoxy resin. The owners, who painstakingly brought it back to its glory, have just opened it up as a full service bed & breakfast.

The Hindry House Cultural Landscape Report and Landscape Rehabilitation Pasadena

The Hindry House site is unique in that it is comprised of two distinct historic designed landscapes, with separate Periods of Significance (POS) and distinct Character Defining Features (CDF) from each: the Hindry era, when the house was constructed, and the Hibbs era, when landscape architect Courtland Paul, FASLA was commissioned to design a swimming pool and associated landscaping. The project goal was to rehabilitate this significance using best practice standards while protecting the buildings from drainage issues, creating a more resilient and drought tolerant landscape that honors the original plant palettes.

The project encompasses four structures of “20th Street Historic Buildings at Pier 70” which were originally constructed at various times between 1885 and 1937.

The unromantically named “Buildings 113, 114, 115, 116” not only originated in different decades, but also are of widely varying construction types and materials, including un-reinforced masonry, reinforced concrete, and wood or steel trusses. The challenges in accommodating a state-of-the-art technology company into a physically deteriorating and seismically substandard historic building, were both technical and architectural. Fortunately, the old buildings were blessed with great architectural “bones”, magnificent potential natural light from skylights and windows, plus awesome “craneways” in dramatic volumes that allowed the insertion of mezzanines, bridges and stairs. In addition to the physical elements of architecture, the use of architectural lighting to shape the spaces, define functions and highlight iconic industrial artifacts (such as yellow cranes), was crucial to the outcome.

In 2014, the once glamorous Villa Carlotta apartment building in Hollywood’s Franklin Village was purchased by the current owners. When it was completed in 1926, the building was filled with hand-painted details and outfitted with the most luxurious amenities of the day. Over the decades, the paint began to fade and the tenants began to make the place their own, for better or worse. Inspired by the history and architecture of the building, the current owners embarked on an extensive rehabilitation that began with the identification of the character-defining features. Original features were preserved and carefully restored, while non-original and deteriorated features were removed and replaced using extant historic fabric or historic documentation as a reference.

Some of the project’s major challenges included accommodating new electrical, plumbing, and mechanical services, restoring decorative features, and updating kitchens and bathrooms, all while maintaining the patina of the building.

William Andrews Clark Memorial Library Seismic Retrofit and Entry Pavilion Los Angeles

The building received a complete retrofit, utilizing core drilling techniques in which rebar was inserted into drilled holes via the roof. This substantially strengthened the building, yet left virtually no visual impact. Accessibility was improved by the construction of a new entry pavilion with an interior staircase and hydraulic elevator. The pavilion was very carefully designed to be compatible with, yet subservient to the 1926 library. Built of glass, steel, and brick, the pavilion derives its appearance from that of the historic library and deftly employs a compatible architectural vocabulary. In its basement is an expanded lobby and orientation room, expanded offices and storage rooms, and an ADA-compliant, gender inclusive restroom. Some features and finishes in the historic building, such as painted ceilings, were also cleaned and restored.

The Historic Goodman Library, which has been home to the Napa County Historical Society and Napa County Landmarks, was damaged during the 2014 earthquake.

The earthquake damaged the stone exterior, the entry tower, columns and capitals, the existing walls, and the arch stones over existing openings. Napa Public Works engineers and the local historic preservation design team worked with OES, FEMA and SHPO to determine the best course of action to repair and restore the property. Using preservation briefs, and assessment reports and drawings, a repair, reconstruction and restoration approach was approved. Detailed exterior and interior construction drawings were prepared to illustrate missing or damaged stone, minor to severe cracks, stone displacement, interior damage to plaster finish and the decorative metal ceiling.

Other finish items such as stained wood doors and windows, trim and molding including the built-in wood Librarian’s desk, malfunctioning utilities were all addressed during the design and construction process.

John K. Van de Kamp Bridge Seismic Retrofit and Rehabilitation

A seismic retrofit and reconstruction of La Loma Bridge were completed in 2017 and the bridge was renamed the John K. Van de Kamp Bridge. The reinforced concrete slab-girder superstructure was replaced with a new post-tensioned concrete box girder superstructure, the deck was slightly widened, and other retrofit work to the abutments and piers and to repair spalls and cracks was completed. The new structure type and widening have not altered the appearance of extant character-defining features of the bridge. The new superstructure and widened deck are connected directly to the existing bridge piers, spandrel columns, and main arches with vertical shear pins. The essential form of the open-spandrel reinforced concrete bridge remains intact. Additional concrete frames added between existing columns on piers 3 and 5 are minimally visible and do not diminish the integrity of the historic pier design. The cosmetic repairs to damaged and spalling concrete match the original bridge features in color, texture, style, and design.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA Fair Oaks

Chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Milford Wayne Donaldson is an architect of innovative design, a past-president of the California Preservation Foundation, and a tireless advocate for historic preservation. In 2010, he was appointed by President Barack Obama as Chairman of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Wayne had previously served as the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) for the state of California from 2004 through 2012. As SHPO he streamlined the Section 106 process of the National Historic Preservation Act and led the national initiative towards the sustainability and greening of historic resources.

Before his appointment in 2004 by Gov. Schwarzenegger, Wayne had a successful 26 year practice as a preservation architect and contractor in California, Arizona, and Nevada. He is a former Chair of the State Historical Building Safety Board, a past member of the State Historical Resources Commission and past-president of the California Preservation Foundation.

Throughout a career that spans more than four decades, Wayne has established himself as a leader in historic preservation and adaptive reuse of existing structures. In

1978, Wayne founded Heritage Architecture & Planning, which he sold when he was appointed as the California SHPO. He has completed over 3,000 projects, mainly throughout the western portion of the United States. His depth of knowledge unites nineteenth century building methods with state-of-the-art twenty-first century construction technologies.

Wayne has received several awards in preservation architecture including the California Council of the American Institute of Architects Award of Excellence and the Historic Preservation Award, and the 1996 Preservationist of the Year Award from the California Preservation Foundation. He served as a member of the Preserve America Summit “Determining What’s Important” committee.

Wayne is a 1967 graduate of the California Polytechnic University, where he earned a Bachelor of Architecture. He received his Master of Science from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland and a Masters in Public History and Teaching from the University of San Diego.

2018 PRESIDENT’S AWARDS Janet’s career in historic preservation began when she and her family moved from the San Francisco Bay area to Redlands in the Inland Empire. She earned a Master’s degree in Historic Resources Management from UC Riverside, specializing in California history and completing an internship at the California Museum of Photography. After graduation, Janet established an informal consulting partnership with Dr. Lauren Bricker, taking on a variety of projects that promoted preservation.

Janet Hansen Los Angeles Deputy Manager, Office of Historic Resources, Los Angeles Department of City Planning Janet Hansen is the manager of the citywide Los Angeles Historic Resource Survey (SurveyLA), the largest historic resources survey completed in an American city and a model for other communities worldwide. She has worked as a historic preservation consultant as an adviser for cities including Denver, Dallas, Philadelphia, and Toronto, Canada. Hansen has served on multiple commissions, including the California State Historical Resources Commission, a governor appointed position.

During her tenure on Redlands’ Historic and Scenic Preservation Commission, Janet was referred to by developers as the “terminator” and thereafter by local preservationists as the “preservinator.” She later worked as the Historic Preservation Specialist for the City of Riverside, where she met with staff at the Getty Conservation Institute as part of their study of nationwide survey best practices.

When a position opened in Los Angeles for a survey manager, Janet eagerly accepted, beginning a twelve-year adventure to develop SurveyLA. This monumental project covered all of the city, almost 500 square miles and 880,000 legal parcels.

Janet led teams of consultants, volunteers, and interns to complete the survey itself, as well as to develop a citywide historic context statement, the structure of which took years to develop but has now resulted in 200 themes relating to the history and development of Los Angeles and some first ever context on ethnic cultural communities and topics including Jewish History of Los Angeles, Women’s Rights.

Mary Adams Urashima Huntington Beach Author and Advocate for Historic Wintersburg Mary Adams Urashima chairs the grassroots preservation effort to save Historic Wintersburg and is the author of Historic Wintersburg in Huntington Beach. She identified and named the historic property, which was designated one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places in 2014 and one of America’s National Treasures in 2015. Urashima’s advocacy has helped to stave off demolition of the historic site and enabled discussions between the property owner and the City of Huntington Beach that are working toward its full preservation as a heritage site.

Named after the Wintersburg Village, the site is a rare, pre-Alien Land Law of 1913 Japanese-owned property. A California civil rights “site of conscience,” its history traces

the remarkable stories of Japanese pioneers and the struggle for civil liberties.

Building on oral history research done by Professor Emeritus Art Hansen at the Center for Oral History at California State University Fullerton in the 1980s, Mary has been researching and working to save Historic Wintersburg for almost nine years.

Mary is a former journalist, with thirty years in media, governmental and public affairs.

She has served on multiple local and international boards and as a political appointee for various humanitarian and preservation efforts. She has received significant recognition, including the Civil Rights Leadership Award from the California Association of Human Relations Organizations, the Community Hero award from the Japanese American Citizens League Pacific Southwest Chapter, and being named one of the “Women who make a Difference” by the Orange County Community Forum.

Mary is an advocate for historic preservation on the statewide California Preservation Foundation’s Advocacy Committee, and a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the American Historical Association, and the Organization of American Historians. She writes with a goal of furthering the understanding of America’s diverse history, in particular the history of Japanese Americans in Southern California. Mary’s hope is that Historic Wintersburg will become a place where the history of Japanese American pioneers and their West Coast civil rights story will be remembered and taught to future generations.

KFA Architects Santa Monica Architectural Firm KFA reshapes Los Angeles by designing great places where people flourish. They know and love LA like no other place and are proud to have contributed to the fabric of this beautiful city.

In 1975, Wade Killefer, FAIA founded the design build firm that was to become Killefer Flammang Architects. Barbara Flammang, AIA joined him in 1980 bringing experience from working in several large architectural firms. The firm designed its first library in 1983, first school in 1985, first affordable housing project in 1988, and its first mixed-use residential project in 1990.

In the late 1990s, KFA helped spark the resurgence of the historic core in downtown Los Angeles. KFA designed the first three buildings under LA’s Adaptive Reuse Ordinance in the Old Bank District, and have since rehabilitated over 40 historic buildings throughout the City and County.

Over the past 43 years, KFA has built over 250 housing developments and over 15,000 residential units with 4,500 being adaptive reuse units.

In 2015, KFA marked its 40th anniversary, celebrating the colleagues with whom they have worked and the clients who have challenged them to think big and get things right. Later that year, the firm announced three new partners: Jonathan Watts, AIA joined longtime principals Lise Bornstein, AIA and John Arnold, AIA as partners to expand KFA’s 43-year legacy of reshaping Los Angeles.

KFA has received numerous awards and recognition for its diverse, forward-thinking architecture, and in 2016, KFA was honored with the prestigious AIA California Council Firm Award.

In 2017, KFA transformed the Commercial Exchange Building in Downtown Los Angeles into the boutique hotel Freehand LA. Earlier this year, the 250 room NoMad Los Angeles hotel opened, bringing new life to the historic Bank of Italy Building at 7th and Olive. Hollenbeck Terrace in Boyle Heights, Evanston Court in Pasadena, and Immanuel Place in Long Beach are three adaptive reuse housing projects that have recently celebrated their grand openings.
