Dear Friends of Caliber,
Caliber Public Schools is not just a network of schools. We are a movement for educational equity and excellence. Since our founding in 2014, Caliber has served as a vital force in Richmond and Vallejo, two communities too often overlooked despite their deep reservoirs of brilliance, talent, and aspiration. Today, our two schools serve nearly 2,000 students in grades TK-8, the vast majority of whom have historically been denied access to the opportunities that lead to long-term success.
The strength of our legacy lies in our mission to achieve educational equity by shifting the experiences, expectations, and outcomes for historically underserved students. The next chapter for Caliber begs us to go beyond simply setting the bar, and to scale an even higher mountain: we are being asked to change trajectories for our young people as they prepare for college, career, and life.
In this report, you’ll see the underpinnings of our success over the last ten years, as well as a look to our future. I hope these stories inspire you and connect you to our mission and our people.
Thank you for your support of our mission.
Climbing ever higher,

Terence Johnson Chief Executive Officer

Our TK programs are steadily expanding as we move toward full enrollment at both campuses. With the continued support of our donors and community, we’re creating more opportunities for students to start their Caliber journey earlier than ever.

“Having worked closely with Caliber’s TK teachers and students, I can confidently say this program stands apart from the many early childhood classrooms I’ve seen across the country.
In too many schools serving communities impacted by systemic inequities, early childhood classrooms focus narrowly on basic skills, such as letters and counting, through direct instruction and repetition— an approach that research shows does little to change long-term academic outcomes. By contrast, Caliber’s approach builds the foundational skills that truly matter: oral language, vocabulary, social connection, curiosity, and memory—all predictors of later success.”

“My greatest joy in teaching TK is that I get to help students fall in love with learning and plant important life skills that the world will expect them to have when they enter into adulthood. I get to see the seeds we plant grow year after year, as students move on to the next grade.”

“What really sets Caliber’s TK program apart is our play based approach and emphasis on self regulation and social-emotional skills. I get to be the first teacher many students have, and therefore, I leave a very first impression of this place called, “school”.”

As a people-centered organization, Caliber is dedicated to ensuring our schools are top places to work and grow professionally. Feedback is one of Caliber’s core values, and coaching is how that value comes to life every day. Every Caliber teammate has a coach who supports them to achieve their goals for our students and schools. These relationships are a defining part of who we are as an organization.
Caliber’s approach to coaching is intentional and balances each person’s individual strengths with the ambitious goals we have for our students. Instructional coaches support teachers through classroom observations, real-time feedback, one-on-one conversations, and

“Coaching is one of the most powerful levers we have as school leaders to drive meaningful change. At Caliber, it’s woven into the fabric of our schools. Nobody does coaching like Caliber.”

designing collaborative learning communities. In addition to individual coaching, our instructional leadership teams regularly conduct school walkthroughs focused on specific instructional moves and feedback cycles, ensuring alignment and shared ownership for growth across classrooms. Together, these structures create sustained, targeted support that leads to real shifts in both teacher practice and student outcomes.
Coaching at Caliber is about aligning actions and relationships with our mission.
