The Consolidated Publishing Company

The Chamber exists because of our members, and we’re able to reach all of our members thanks to our volunteers. Volunteers, made up of chamber member representatives, aid the Chamber in putting on events. It takes an army to put together and prepare for each year’s Business Expo, Salute to Industry and Small Business Awards, just to name a few of our happenings. Not only does volunteering benefit the Chamber, it also benefits the volunteers and introduces them to others they might not have otherwise met. People do business with people they know, so if someone is introduced, it could lead to future business investment. As Chamber volunteers, members become more visible, notable, and gain introduction to the movers and shakers of our county and surrounding areas. The Chamber is where business relationships are built. We have numerous opportunities for involvement and volunteering in groups and committees

Our Chamber Ambassadors serve as liaisons between the Chamber staff and membership. With a full-time staff of five serving a membership of more than 1,000, having the Ambassadors’ help in assisting with events and member visits is very beneficial.

comes a sense of pride for me, so I say thank you, Chamber, for all you have done for me and for Autumn Cove!” — Andrea Miller, Autumn Cove

Our Marketing & Tourism and Hotel/Motel Committees work to promote Calhoun County’s growing status as a tourism destination and ensure the public’s knowledge of activities and sights to see. The Chamber’s Public Affairs/Governmental Affairs Committee serves as our “Voice of Business,” holding regular meetings with elected officials, researching issues, and bringing those issues to the attention of our delegation.

“The public affairs meetings give me an opportunity to meet and get to know the decision makers in local Governmental agencies. They have a forum where they can communicate their plans and problems with businesses and the private sector. Businesses can share their opportunities and issues, and together problems can be solved, resulting in new opportunities for the growth of our community. ” —Dick Anderson, Huron Valley Steel

“The opportunities given to me by being an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce are irreplaceable. I don’t believe I could have met all the wonderful people I have and made such long-lasting business relationships on my own in such a short amount of time. The Chamber of Commerce brought everyone right to me! It is a lot of fun holding the role as ‘ambassador,’ but there is a responsibility factor as well. With that responsibility

Our Education Committee is comprised of educators and businesses passionate for education. We encourage business involvement in the area schools through our programs like Adopt-A-School. “Education is central to the quality of life we enjoy in our community. It is our responsibility to provide the very best education to everyone who is willing to learn. ” — Rodney Owens, Anniston Water Works & Sewer Board

The Chamber’s Small Business Committee works to plan and implement programs to assist our small businesses. These programs include Small Business Month and Awards, celebrated in May, and educational seminars and presentations. “As Chair of Small Business Development, the continued efforts to connect our greater communities through business development activities and events that promote continuous growth and prosperity of Calhoun County and East Central Alabama are ongoing. Businesses do business with people they know and trust. Small Businesses are vital to our local economy and are provided numerous opportunities to grow and become the best of the best through programs and networking events such as the Business

Emergency Readiness Series, Lunch & Learns, Small Business Month, Salute to Industry and Business after Hours, to name just a few. As a business professional and an avid supporter of business development it is vital to be part of an organization that exemplifies connecting communities and business for the betterment of all. We support the Calhoun Chamber of Commerce that in turn supports our community and our members.” — Angela Kemp, AOD Federal Credit Union

We also have committees that arrange and plan our annual events, like that of our Annual Meeting, Salute to Industry, and Business Expo. “RMC is the ‘Community Hospital!’ Being a part of planning events such as the B2B Expo lends us the opportunity to get to know our ‘Business and Industry Community!’” — Bridgette Magouirk, Regional Medical Center If you are interested in becoming more involved or getting a member of your staff engaged, please contact the Chamber at 256-237-3536.

Connecting Our Greater Communities During 2012 through 2013, the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce partnered with our regional Chamber sisters to “connect our greater communities” for the betterment of us all. We partnered together to promote regional tourism, shopping local and regionally, and workforce readiness for our region. Clay County

Created in 1866 from land once part of Talladega and Randolph counties, Clay County houses Ashland and Lineville. Bordered by mountains and rivers, Clay County is home to a large workforce, excellent education and a family-oriented community. Famous natives of Clay County include: Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black, Alabama Governor Bob Riley, and Commander Joe Edwards, Jr., U.S. Navy Astronaut. The Clay County Chamber, “The Heart of East Central Alabama,” advocates for its more than 182 diverse member businesses and individuals, promoting and enhancing the talents and resources of its area to create a climate of growth and success in the community. The Clay County Chamber’s mission is to “provide services to members, support existing business, promote positive economic development and tourism, while preserving our community’s natural resources and enhancing our citizen’s quality of life.”

Cleburne County

The Cleburne County Chamber of Commerce is a “membership organization comprised of businesses, nonprofits, municipal governments, and individuals dedicated to the economic and cultural development of Cleburne County,” advocating for its more than 146 Chamber members. Home to the highest point in Alabama, Cheaha Mountain, Cleburne County also has great schools, rich history, culture and natural resources. Created in 1866 from land of Calhoun, Randolph and Talladega counties, Cleburne County was once Creek and Cherokee Indian hunting territory. Settlers came into the county around 1825, and gold was discovered around 1830, bringing an estimated 500 miners to the area. Other outdoor gems of the county include the Talladega National Forest, Dugger Mountain Wilderness, Tallapoosa River and Pinhoti Trail.

Cherokee County

Cherokee County is home to the Cherokee Rock Village, Weiss Lake and Little River Canyon National Preserve. With a community rich in agriculture, mountain and lakes, there are activities such as rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, boating, sailing, fishing and more. The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce’s mission is “to stimulate, promote, advance and improve the infrastructure for business, industry, tourism, and civic endeavors of Cherokee County, Alabama.” With 320 members, the Cherokee Chamber works to provide services, educational resources, and networking opportunities to local leaders that help them grow and profit in their business. The Cherokee Chamber is housed on the Gadsden State Community College Cherokee Campus, with whom they partner to promote the community and education opportunities. FUN FACT: Scenes from 2006’s Failure to Launch, starring Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker, were filmed at the Cherokee Rock Village.

Gadsden-Etowah County

In 1868, Etowah County was created from the territory that was once Baine County. Now home to the Annual Riverfest each June, wineries, Back Forty, and more, Etowah County is a growing area. The Gadsden/Etowah Chamber, whose slogan is “Membership Matters,” is fueled by their mission “to be a catalyst for economic growth in Etowah County by serving member businesses through advocacy, education and community partnerships.” Currently serving more than 779 active members and business representatives, the Gadsden/Etowah Chamber strives “to be the voice of business by anticipating trends, providing tangible support and training and linking critical partnerships for the success of the whole community.”

It is also home to three birding sites on the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail, fabulous southern cooking and barbeque, antique shopping and more. The county has numerous great events like their Paddlin’ 4 Paws fundraiser, the Lake Wedowee Summer Jam and their annual Summer on Main Street Festival.

Greater Pell City

Known as the “Gateway to Logan Martin Lake,” the Pell City area has experienced rapid growth over the past 10 years; however, the community maintains its small-town feel. Representing more than 392 members, the Greater Pell City Chamber’s main focus is to “help build a community that residents are attracted to and proud to be a part of,” while “working to advance the commercial, industrial, civic, and general interest of the City of Pell City and its trade area.” Home to an impressive park system, a fabulous lake, a thriving business community and quality schools and health care, Pell City is also hosts an Annual Hometown Block Party, celebrated for 14 years, and the first-ever Pell City Toughman Triathlon with Team Magic, scheduled for August. Pell City has numerous recreational opportunities, specialty shops, businesses and commercial districts, all just north of I-20.

Talladega/Lincoln

The Greater Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce is “an action association designed to meet business community needs.” Serving as legislative representation, informational hub and business resource, this “voluntary organization of small and large businesses, professionals and interested individuals join together to advance the interests of their community.” The Chamber of Commerce has served the area since 1909. Home to the Talladega Superspeedway and Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center, Talladega County was actually established in 1832. With areas such as Sylacauga and Lincoln, Talladega County has everything from the Mom-andPop shop to Honda Manufacturing of Alabama.

Andrea says, “Joining The Chamber was a way to help represent our retirement community and give back to local businesses and community members. I really had no idea until I became more involved with the community, by way of The Chamber, just how easy it could be to meet people who simply wanted the same things I did……to meet new people and to expand local business! Looking back it was a wonderful decision, and I would encourage any business to do the same!” Andrea is married to Matt Miller of Jacksonville. Thank you Andrea, for all you do! Congratulations! The Chamber recognizes Larry K. Deason as the Brenda Dozier Hollis Chairman’s Cup Recipient. Larry Deason is the President of Farmers & Merchants Bank, responsible for overseeing all bankrelated activities. Deason has been with F&M Bank since 1988, but he began his banking career with Anniston National Bank in 1974.

Previous positions in his 40-year banking career include executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) for F&M Bank, senior vice president for Southtrust Bank of Calhoun County, and senior lender and vice president of Regions Bank. Larry is a graduate of Jacksonville State University with a bachelor of science degree. He has also completed the Graduate School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Since 2009, Larry has served as the chairman of the Calhoun County Economic Development Council (EDC). As chairman he has assisted the EDC with the recruitment of industries such as Industrial Resin Recycling, Garcy Corporation and Industry Products Company. He has also helped with the expansion of existing industries in Calhoun County which have included, but are not limited to, NABI/New Flyer, Bridgewater Interiors, and Kronospan. Through his leadership the EDC has constructed two speculative buildings that will be used to recruit new industries to Calhoun County, purchased more than 250 acres of land for future development, and conducted multiple domestic and international industrial recruitment trips. Larry serves as President of Regional Health Services and Chairman’s Council Director of Community Bankers Association of Alabama. He serves on the boards of Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, Independent Community Bankers of America and Alabama State Banking. He is a past director of the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce. He is also a charter member and serves on the Anniston Surgery Center Board. Internships: Opportunities for the Future Internships should be called modern day apprenticeships because that is exactly what they are. Employers and staff take the time to teach students, pursuing a certain career, all there is to know about that job field. Students are able to shadow and learn the skills for their pursued trade, so they too can apply it to their future work. Internships are NOT to take the place of hired staff, but allow students to observe and test-drive a career. Some require pay, and most pay at least minimum wage or reimburse for travel. Internships generally last a semester, like a class, and can be completed during Fall, Spring or Summer semesters. Not every student gains class credit, and not every department requires an internship of students. For most degrees, internships are highly suggested, especially with today’s job market and need for prior work experience. When considering an intern, envision helping that student find their niche in the working world.

The Chamber has partnered with Internships.com to provide employers and students with a place to connect. Employers can post internships, access a student resume database, and receive expert insight—for free. Students and recent graduates can search the company database for internship opportunities and apply at no charge. Investing in internships is a win-win for all involved. For more information, please contact the Chamber at 256237-3536. This program is brought to you by the partnership between Jacksonville State University and the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce. “An internship to me means opportunity. My internship has provided me the opportunity to gain much needed experiences and the opportunity to sharpen my skills. While interning at the Chamber, I have gained experiences, new skills, and new contacts. I am grateful for my internship because if I had chosen not to complete one, I would have missed out on this wonderful opportunity.” Haley Elders, 2014 JSU Graduate and Chamber Intern
