A Word With Percy Jackson Q: What do you think about you losing your memory and not being able to remember anything? Does this effect how you live? A: Well obviously, it does effect your life because I can’t remember anything from my past, where I came from, people I’ve met and stuff like that. Not being able to remember anything really bugs me. Parts of my memory return and it then leaves me and I forget again. It’s really annoying. I feel like I’m in a haunted house with mysterious things. Q: You had these demons coming back to life a while ago. You couldn’t kill them. What was going through your mind whenever they attacked? A: The demons really were stubborn. They would die and come back to life. For me, that really doesn’t help my situation. Having lost everything, it was really frustrating. I was trying to find out everything such as who I am, how I got here then to have these demons I killed keep reappearing was very confusing. I’m not sure exactly how I got here or how I know everything but I hope I find out soon. Q: Being the son of Neptune, and being feared by all the campers in the Roman camp, how do you feel when some of them are fearful you bring bad luck? A: Well to me, it doesn’t really matter, I don’t believe in bad luck or any of that. If they want to fear me, they can fear but I have a couple people helping me out and that’s all I need at the moment. Hazel and Jason have really helped me out by trying to help me fit in. Q: How do you feel about the recent disappearance of the Roman camper Jason? A: To be honest, I didn’t know him. He seems like a really good guy and I feel bad for him. Hopefully we can find him and help him out a little. It would be really good for the campmorale if we would be able to do that. Hopefully someone finds him and are helping him as much as people are helping me. Q: Thank you for your time Percy.

Super Lyrics - The By Born to push you around, Better just stay down You pull away You hit the ground Mouth so full of lies Tend to block your eyes Just keep them closed Keep praying Just keep waiting Waited for the one The day that never comes When you stand up and feel the warmth but the sunshine never comes No the sunshine never comes

Push across that line Just stay down this time Hide in your cell Crawl in your shell You’ll have your time

Day That Never Comes Metallica God’ll make them pay Take it back one day I’ll end this day I’ll splatter color on this gray Waited for the one The day that never comes When you stand up and feel the warmth but the sunshine never comes Love is a four letter word And never spoken here Love is a four letter word Here in this prison I suffer this no longer I put it into This I swear! This I swear! The sun will shine This I swear! This I swear! This I swear!

A Song Life is an eternal struggle to find happiness. I see similarities between the song The Day That Never Comes and my book, The Son of Neptune. In both instances, the theme presented is how the main character struggles against the adversities of life. Throughout the song, The Day That Never Comes, the artist expresses life’s struggles. For example, the lyric states, “Born to push you around.” This line means that life is always challenging you. Similarly, this relates to my book when Percy lost all his memory and he feels like it will be forever before he gets his memory back. The message of this song is if you continue to be persistent, willing to fight for something you believe in, and use patience, eventually you will accomplish your goal. “I suffer this no longer, I put into this I swear! The sun will shine,” emphasizes his continued struggle. Three of the following examples from the song: “Mouth so full of lies,” “But the sunshine never comes,” “Waiting for the one,” really helps describe the theme of the song. That you should live in the now and not think about the future. Things in life are never what they seem. These lyrics make the understanding of song better because they create a mental picture of this person struggling to find their path. The songwriter chose “the sunshine never comes” because he feels like it’s a long struggle and he will never reach his goal. I chose this song, The Day That Never Comes by Metallica, because it parallels the message or theme in my book, The Son of Neptune. In both cases, they are struggling to find their path. In the song, the artist writes, “Push across that line Just stay down this time… You’ll have your time.” This is similar to the 8 8

Review book where the writer expresses “Beauty is finding the right fit, the natural fit. To be perfect, you have to feel perfect about yourself. Avoid trying to be someone you’re not.” Both these quotes show the challenges of life and the persistence needed to overcome them. Another example of similar messages is how Percy lost his memory and how he felt discouraged thinking he would never get it back. “Percy Scowled. “I-I know you.” Nico raised his eyebrow “Do you?” This quote illustrates Percy’s frustration in partially recognizing people and places, but not knowing if he would ever be able to live in a place that feels like home again. Percy wants to find his memories and not feel confused and lost again. He’s hoping his tenacity will be rewarded and he finally finds peace, then the sun will rise for him again. “But the sunshine never comes… The sun will shine.” Throughout the book, Percy is always fighting evil with all his power and energy. In this quote, “Part of their problem was Percy. He fought like a demon, whirling through the defender’s ranks in a completely unorthodox style, rolling under their feet, slashing with his sword instead of stabbing like a Roman would, whacking campers with the flat of his blade, and generally causing mass panic.” This statement clearly shows Percy is fighting for his life with all his effort and will stand up for what he believes in. The song lyrics similarly state “I suffer this no longer, I put into this I swear! The sun will shine.” While authors write novels to develop their characters, plots, and themes, songwriters use their lyrics, music, and special effects, to similarly develop their story with maximum impact. 9 9

A Home

I am from the vigorous bloody battle of Neptune, Saturn and their clan The clattering Of my sword Riptide, I am from misplaced memories, a shadow of my former self I am from the horrible stench of blood, sweat and tears of the massive battle arena I am from the babbling fountain of the cabin, And the damp, salty smell of the sea I am from amazing voyages, And the bone chilling waters I am from the salty ocean waves

Writtten Poem

From the quiet talking of campers at night in their packed cabins I am from my recovering memories, And the memories stolen like candy from a child I am from the resilient quest for the world, To save from the horrifying death of the amazing blue planet Out in the ocean, My dad Poseidon, Giving me strength, and parts of memories I am from the creatures, and the unknown, That wanders along the sandy ocean bottom, I am from the all-powerful gods

High Flying Review Neptune: the god of the seas, a brave warrior. Pluto: the leader of the underworld, master of combat. Mars: the god of war, overlord of sin. To read about the gods, is to read about ourselves. Humans are most related to the Roman Gods because of their imperfections. Humans are not perfect, we sin, we disrespect, and we are dismissive. The Son of Neptune follows the story of teenage boy who forgets everything. Slowly, he will put the pieces of his life back together to complete the puzzle. Although this book has only been released for 6 months, it has already been a New York Times best seller, selling over 150,000 copies. In the Alberta Curriculum, I believe that the series, The Hero’s of Olympus should be included. This is because the book is unpredictable, has suspense that continues to intrigue readers and relatable characters. The book puts readers into the mind of Percy Jackson, the main character. As you continue to follow his quest, you soon realize how much depth his life has. It continues to always keep the same action packed storyline throughout the book that makes it difficult for readers to put it down, causing them to stay up late, and get up early. 12

The unpredictability of the plot is very intriguing and the descriptive language vaults you into the book. The ending of this incredible story leaves readers begging for much more. It relates so much to life, with decisions of which way our life path is going. The main character, Percy Jackson, has a spontaneous personality, which makes the story impossible to guess what will happen next. During the storyline of this book, Percy has many amazing twist and turns making the story unpredictable. During the storyline of this book, Percy Jackson has many suspenseful scenes making the reader want to read on. The amazing figurative language written by the unbelievable author has readers talking about this energy excessive book all over the world. The readers wanting the third book for even more adventurous moments. For now, readers will have to read many other books before the highly anticipated third book is released in the fall. In conclusion, I believe that this amazing, bone thrilling novel, should be included in the grade 8 curriculum because of its figurative language and its ability to put the reader inside the story. You are able to imagine the story and you remember it as a movie. Putting figurative language, and the right amount of suspense, it makes the perfect formula for a great novel. 13
