Conversing with Max

14-year-old Max is not your average teenager; because she was infused with Avian DNA, she is a mutant that is able to fly. As a result of this infusion she has grown vast white wings. Max was born in a laboratory that they call the “School, with no family she lives with five others who were created just like her. Before Jeb, who works at the School as a Scientist, took her and her companions away, she stayed there stuck in

a cold metal dog cage, with no comfort, as the scientists did tests on her and the others. After escaping, she and her companions hid in a mountain for four years until the mutants called Erasers were created just to hunt them and bring them back to the facility. We will now sit down with Max to learn more about her journey, difficulties, and experiences.

Here are some questions she is going to answer about her experience, thoughts, feelings, and her journeys with her companions to save to world from destructon or over crowded with millions and millions of mutants that failed to serve its purpose. Q: Recently, when you had found out that Jeb was still alive, but was working in the laboratory, how did you feel? A: I felt relieved because it has been three-four years since we had last saw him. The first time was when he had taken us away from the laboratory and cared for us. Then he had suddenly disappeared and Fang, Iggy, Gasman, Nudge, Angel and I had thought that he was dead. Now that I have seen him again I feel sad because now he is not the old nice Jeb Batchler that had taken us away from this place and now he is one of the evil guys like the way he was before. Q: How did you feel when Angel was taken from you? A: I felt really sad and scared of what’s going to happen to her. Since Angel was the youngest member of our family of 6, I liked her the most out of all the others because she was only six years of age. I knew what they were going to do with her whe she was taken. They were going to test her and her abilities to see if she was worthy of keeping or not. I wished that it was one of us that ws taken, so then we could have a little bit more resistance to them. Q: Before he turned into a grown Eraser, did you think of Ari as a friend? A: I liked Ari when he was still a little kid before he was mutated into a grown up Eraser, but now he is half human and half wolf. He became evil as soon as he was rebuilt. His whole mind changed from the polite and kind little kid to a monster that nobody likes. Rage appears every time I see him and team of other mutated kids that had to same test.

Q: Recently, if you had a parent, would they be nice or mean? A: I think that they would be nice because I was their daughter that they had donated or force fully taken away to the laboratory. I had a parent like person that stayed with my companions and me until one day he disappeared and never came back, so we thought that he was dead. Until when we were all captured by the mutants called Erasers back to the facility and found out that he had betrayed us and went back to the facility and continued to work as one of them. He was the closest parent I had when I was first born in the facility. Q: Do you enjoy being a mutant or would you rather be a normal human with no powers or infused DNA? A: yes, and no because it is not fun at all to be chased by scientists trying to hunt you down when you have escaped from there two years ago or chased by other mutants that were born to hunt you down. Being a mutant is good if you were chased then you could fly or do something special that the chasers couldn’t do. Then you could get away with it, and never care what would happen to them. All you need to care about is survival and how you feel and if you can make it away or not. If they trip on something you can laugh annd run and hope you dont run into anything yourself.

The Song Of Power

Have you ever thought of what you would do if you had the choice to sing for your career or go do something else, which would you, choose? John Cooper and his band, Skillet chose to sing for their career. On August 25, 2009, Skillet released the album “Awake” and from that album there is a song called Never Surrender that speaks to this theme. In this very blue and white planet that we have been inhabiting for a while now and people have always been giving up when they think it is too hard or impossible, that is true, but if you don’t put your mind into it then it obviously is out of the question. In this song, “Never Surrender” the overall theme is don’t give up on want you want to do. In this song he writes “Make me feel better, I wanna feel better, Stay with me here now and never surrender, Never surrender.” Here the author is saying. He shows this again, when he writes, “Do you know what it’s like to, Be your own worst enemy, Who sees the things in me I can’t hide?” Ultimately, here we see that if you want to do something you should probably never surrender or give up on it or regret it. Make me feel better, I wanna feel better You wish you were someone else You’re scared to see yourself? The effect that these words have in the song is that they are literally the theme of this song and the artist chose these words in the song because, to me the theme is don’t give up, surrender, and regret

what you are doing. This makes the song better by actually giving the song a theme and a purpose. This draws me into the world that the song is written because of the word choices that the songwriter as chosen in this song. If you were an escapee, what would you do? Would you dash or would you stay and be caught again, I guess not. This is way I have chosen this song because it is very close to my book, Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. The parts that are close is that the characters in my book are usually running away from their enemies and if they give up then they will be captured. For example, the author writes in the book, “Suddenly, when Jeb left us, we thought he was dead.” Similarly, the songwriter states, “Stay with me here now and never surrender, Never surrender.” Here we can see that. . Max was left in charge when Jeb disappeared after two years. Until one day… everything changed, Angel was gone. For example, “When Angel was caught by the Erasers, I was furious and I didn’t know what to do.” The songwriter says “Do you know what it’s like when you are not who you wanna be?

Do you know what it’s like when You’re scared to see yourself? Do you know what it’s like when You wish you were someone else Who didn’t need your help to get by?

Never Surrender

Do you know what it’s like To wanna surrender? I don’t wanna feel like this tomorrow I don’t wanna live like this today Make me feel better, I wanna feel better Stay with me here now and never surrender Never surrender Do you know what it’s like when You’re not who you wanna be? Do you know what it’s like to Be your own worst enemy Who sees the things in me I can’t hide?

Do you know what it’s like To wanna surrender? I don’t wanna feel like this tomorrow I don’t wanna live like this today Make me feel better, I wanna feel better Stay with me here now and never surrender Make me feel better, you make me feel better You make me feel better, put me back together I don’t wanna feel like this tomorrow I don’t wanna live like this today Make me feel better, I need to feel better Stay with me here now and never surrender Put me back together Never surrender, make me feel better You make me feel better Stay with me here now and never surrender

Where I’m From I am from a luminous and sinful place Where experiments are awaiting for a test I am from a place covered in the sterile stench of chemicals. And bleached white lab coats. I could hear the loud voices of laughter, screams, And crying I am from many strange failed experiments had been made. I am from the lucky fate of successful trials. I am born to be free from this place. I am from in a lifeless metal dog cage With cold metal bars, and no comfort. Just sitting in there with nothing to do, just staring at the ceiling At my companions until I was taken for a test with a half smile on my face. I was happy and joyful when I had a parent to look out for me He was caring, comforting, and protective. But now there is no one just my companions and I When he had disappeared from us everything changed. I have to look after my brothers and sisters. And I had to take charge of what he had started. I changed from just getting protected by someone to protecting my friends and companions.

I am good at caring for others Flying and having fun I am good at fighting And running away I am good at many sports And staying still I am good at staying alive When I am about to die I am good at being a leader I can’t really remember When I was born All I can remember was waking up In a world that smells of chemicals Never to do anything but sitting In a cold metal dog cage Until a guy took me way from That place and went into the Mountains To care for us until we got bigger And was able to care for our selves He had taught us to fight and survive

Should It Go or Should It Stay Will This Book Be Chosen?

“The funny thing about-facing imminent death is that it really snaps everything else into perspective.” Although “Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment” is an excellent book, but in my belief it is not advised to be in the inclusion of the grade 8 language arts curriculum. Furthermore, I would not advise the book for any grade 8 students unless they are interested in fantasy type books. “The Maximum Ride series has sold over one million copies in the world.” The storyline is great and action packed, however, I found this book confusing at times. By this I mean that the plot is some times hard to understand is sort of difficult to get the theme of the story. The characters were difficult and it to relate to because this book is a fantasy. The book was not written very well. The chapters are very short and don’t have very many details. In my opinion in this very world that we live in right now, it is not very hard to create an avian mutant a laboratory with the current technology and ma terials, but without the right materials it is nearly impossible… The plot was difficult to follow and confusing. It was hard to follow because the story jumps around a lot and sometimes doesn’t make any sense. Furthermore, the perspective changes a lot through out the book. The plot is hard to understand and does not start until a couple pages later. The plot is not very good from the beginning it is very difficult to find out where the climax is and all of the other elements that is listed in the outline of a good storyline. The plot in this book is confusing because it is not very well planned out and has not followed what was planned out in the beginning.

I found that the characters are challenging to relate to. Since this book is a fantasy it is hard for people in their everyday lives to relate to the characters in this book. I don’t think that anybody in the world would want their DNA to be divided into bird and human. If anybody that would want to then they will have to be a lab rat and get it in their body when they are still very young like the characters did. When they were just born the bird DNA was inserted. There is no visible mutant in this world and if there was then they would be locked way in a laboratory far from a city or town, like the laboratory in this book was. The characters in this book are implausible in the real world. In “Maximum Ride, The Angel Experiment”, the chapters are extremely short and have minimal detail. Most of the chapters included are only a few pages long, therefore splitting up the action. The details included in the chapters don’t really create a vivid image in the reader’s head. It takes a while to get the image in the head. The storyline takes a while to get it and follow it around. The characters personalities aren’t explained and it takes a while to get their personality. Since the chapters are so short not very much is explained in each chapter and the book ended up with more than a 100 chapters. The chapters are sometimes in great detail and sometimes it is not in great detail so there is no balance between the two. In consideration of all of the supporting details above “Maximum Ride, The Angel Experiment” is not advised to be included to be in the grade 8 language arts curriculum, because of all of the following reasons above. This book is not advised.
