TALKING to Thomas CALGARY TIMES JOURNALIST MALLORY MCcOSHEN SAT DOWN WITH THOMAS TO ASK HIM ABOUT HIS ADVENTURES, MYSTERIES, AND THOUGHTS ON HIS LIFE SO FAR

Thomas’s unsmiling face may bring doubt upon some, but bravery for others. So far

half the people he lives with once hated him for breaking rules, while others thought he was the most heroic person ever. Being lost in life, without any memories can really stall a person, but not this sixteen year old. Making his way through the maze, he guided the Gladers out of certain death and now leading them onto the new journey that will - if successfully finished - allow them to live. He went through a series of truly bizarre events, with the Gladers, Thomas’s new family. Q1: A lot of Gladers thought that you were the reason the ‘ending’ was triggered. Then when you found yourself with Chuck - a boy like a little brother to you - dying in your hands. Your friends were locked in a room with dead bodies hanging from the ceiling and now to find yourself holding a silver ball in place for a head. Do you feel like you triggered the ending? A1.. Well I understand why those shanks thought I triggered the ending, but I know I didn’t. See I purposely got stung by a Griever - went through the changing and a whole lot of pain - just to show the Gladers that I didn’t trigger the ending. Please don’t even bring up Chuck, I will get ticked off all over again. When we were in the new Homestead with those gory hanging bodies I was terrif

ied that Teresa may have been one of those. If she had, the Creators would have been dead yesterday. The silver killer ball was just weird, defiantly NOT my fault. If that doesn’t answer your question, I don’t know what will. Q2: Newt and Minho were the leaders before and after Alby died. You found yourself volunteering for the position of leader as well. Now you are on land as hot as the sun, with Newt and Minho. Are you proud of your upgrade to leader? A2. My upgrade? You’ve got to be kidding me. I went out into the maze to try and save Minho and Alby. I didn’t realize at the time, that if I would’ve survived - like I did - I would become so ‘famous’. Alby died because he would rather leave the world

dead instead of going back to the earth now. Newt picked me up under his wing, but I could already fly. If you understand what I am saying, then yes. I guess I am proud. Q3: During your morning investigation to find Teresa, you came across Aris. He was in the position of Teresa - exact opposite life, well of what he could remember. How do you feel about Aris? Positive or negative? A3. It was weird how Aris’s life was opposite of Teresa’s. Exact opposite, actually. The reason I think Aris is important because he might have information about Group B - the group supposed to kill me. I found this shank tattoo on my neck saying “To be killed by Group B”. Aris might be bad too - that shank is a sissy!

Q4: When you were trapped in the new homestead without any food or water you said it was like a beast was gnawing at your stomach, burrowing its way out. Do you see that as a metaphor to what was currently going on in your life?

A4. Don’t bring up food - I am freaking hungry! Anyways yeah, without any food it felt like a monster was trying to eat my stomach! I guess you could say it was like a metaphor to what was really going on in my life. Teresa is gone, which is like a fire burning in my mind. Also seeing Chuck die and all these creepy and bizarre things happening is like someone causing pain purposely. I know there are memories that I can’t remember - and they are raging in an attempt to get out. I’d say yes to that question. It is like a metaphor.

“I triggered the ending...”

Q5: You have a tattoo on your neck - which mysteriously appeared over night - saying a very intriguing and disturbing message. How do you think you got the tattoo and do you think that the tattoo’s fate will come true?

A5. The tattoo is just creepy. I think I got it for the same group of people who hung those freaking bodies. All the shanks got them. Mine says some freaky stuff though. Group A, Subject A10, “To be killed by group B”. Its weird but group B is the group Aris came from, the girl group. I sure as heck hope it doesn’t come true, otherwise I’ll be one ugly, dead shank. At least that’s what Minho called me. Q6: Knowing that you are a very brave and outgoing juvenile, do you think that younger Gladers look up to you?

A6. I know that Chuck looked up to me. I freaking promised him that I would get him home and that his mom would stop crying. Now he is dead. He probably thought I was one stupid shank after standing in one spot with a knife flying towards me. Chuck probably thought I was trying to make him feel stupid. I am really

one of the younger boys. The rest look up to Minho and Newt, not really me at all.

“I know there are memories that I can’t remember.” Don’t miss Thomas in next issue when we get his intake on Teresa and Brenda. Are the two girls close enough to trust?

I remembered black skies The lightning all around me I remembered each flash As time began to blur Like a startling sign That fate had finally found me And your voice was all I heard That I get what I deserve So give me reason To prove me wrong To wash this memory clean Let the floods cross The distance in your eyes Give me reason To fill this hole Connect this space between

Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies Across this new divide There was nothing inside The memories left abandoned There was nowhere to hide The ashes fell like snow And the ground caved in Between where we were standing And your voice was all I heard That I get what I deserve In every loss in every lie In every truth that you deny

PROVE ME WRONG

Alternative Metal Artist, Linkin Park, recently released a new song New Divide, which speaks about living through life, not hovering above it.

The theme in New Divide is vast because it covers many things. It is a song of confusion - lost in a place where you are alone with your thoughts. It is a song about freedom - I say this in the sense that you can find freedom anywhere if you remember back to happier, free times. It takes an inside look at time especially, like when the song says “as time began to blur.” They say time flies while your having fun, but New Divide changes that to say time flies out of your hands, and there is nothing you can do. New Divide speaks about when obstacles are thrown in your path, you cannot avoid them. Within in the song it says “like fate had finally found me,” which is saying that obstacles are coming your way. Sometimes you will be thrown in places, all alone but you have to suffer through it because good things will come in the end. Linkin Park’s song relates really well to Thomas’s life. The world that New Divide brings you into is almost the same world that James Dashner creates in The Scorch Trials. The lyrics say “I remember black skies, the lightning all around me,” which is the exact way Thomas woke up. In a dark, loud and frightening place, confused and completely lost. When I first heard the song New Divide, I was astonished to hear that it was written for Transformers instead of The Scorch Trails. The minute Thomas saw the Glade, he realized something - his memory was wiped. The only thing he could remember was his name. “The memories left abandoned,” words Thomas’s state better than I ever could. Those lyrics really makes sense and it just weaves into both New Divide and The Scorch Trails so perfectly. “And your voice was all I heard,” explains exactly what happens in Thomas’s life. Once again I am in complete awe of how wonderfully New Divide correlates with The Scorch Trails.

PRIME TIME READS

I’m from the Box, the roaring clamors and the feeling of being inside a baby’s rattle, nausea burrowing in the pit of my stomach I’m from the Glade, my temporary home with a throng of boys sauntering around, with no guidance or anyone to bear their needs, The Maze, speeding on foot and trying to find a way out, avoiding deleterious Grievers Long corridors and sharp turns filling my days, meandering through my mind, I’m from the indescribable grinding noise of metal against gravel, blocking the danger from the safe. I’m from WICKED - World In Catastrophe, Killzone Experiment Department, the apparent sup erior organization that exploits naive boys to find a cure for the Flare Memoryless, only life in the past few months, the awareness of being watched,I’m from Alby yelling “Shut Up you Shuck-Face” and “That’s klunk!” Newt murmuring like he’s british, Minho never being content, boys wailing for incertitude, Looking back in time to a white void of nothing, throbs like getting pierced with a nail, I’m from death threats, a tattoo on my neck saying “To be killed by group B” Forced obed ience, and staring down stark barrels of threatening chilling gunsI’m from anguish, agitation and unfulfilled promises, Bribed like an infant to proceed on an obligatory quest which serves death on a silver platterI’m from lethal diseases, and suspicious rumors of being compensated with a cure ,Conjecturing if I should really do this, or perceiving that derangement has captured my mind and vanishing from this place will give me consolation.I’m from telepathy, as insane as it sounds, the suffering and needless blame, From Teresa, the girl in the coma who was the girl I grew up with, made my decisions with, learning that WICKED is deadly, then trans forming into a very abusive person Then I, transforming into a very valiant person, only to get crushed by her lying tactics. I’m from being the cure to save world from the Flare, I’m from being the only hope.

Captivating the Learning Minds of Today’s Teenagers

“I

spent the rest of the day in someone else’s story. The rare moments that I put the book down, my own pain returned in burning stabs.” Here, Amy Plum quotes the feeling of intrigue that I too, and guarantee you, felt when reading James Dashner’s The Scorch Trials. Leaving reality trailing behind, this book does an phenomenal job of making you step through a door of imagination, into an idiosyncratic land with unpredictable events getting thrown at you. The vivid, flawless figurative language is so intelligible and illustrating that it makes you feel as though you are really there with the characters. These prime qualities prove that The Scorch Trials should be read by the growing minds of eight grade students.

Have you ever been so engaged in a book that when something perturbing happens your heart beats faster? The Scorch Trails gives you a staggering hunch with the eccentric incidents that hide behind each turning corner. The trek through the book is dicey, hostile and overflowing with enigma, like Calgary weather, always throwing a curve ball at you. “Burned by the sun flares and baked by a new, brutal climate, the earth is a wasteland. Government has disintegrated - and with it, order - and now Cranks, people covered in festering wounds and driven to murderous insanity by the infectious disease known as the Flare, roam the crumbling cities hunting for their next victim... and meal” As seen here, James Dashner does a superb job of weaving in large threads of seizing events, molding the book into a story impossible to put down.

I felt like a fish caught in a net when reading this book, no way to escape the surreal world around me. Adventuring through the novel the author’s description of the setting, characters, and emotions toyed with me, so easy to soak up and grasp. Dashner’s vocabulary is a vast library where line after line the words trickle into place. “The rain fell in torrents, like God has sucked up the ocean and spit it out over their heads in fury.” Quotes like these show the immensely striking word choice, with forceful metaphors and eldritch personification, the author ties in profoundly throughout the novel. The Scorch Trails has non-stop action, tremendous language and splendiferous features materializing within it, making the New York Best-Selling Author James Dashner’s novel a prime read for youthful minds.

A

When you read a book, do imagine yourself as the character? Or do you imagine yourself as the narrator? The person watching the situation from the sidelines, like you’re watching a movie? Everyone’s imagination is different, whether its a prairie of color or a cubby of thoughts, you always interpret the things you read with your own vivid mind. Which ever your creative style, there is superb imagery going on, and The Scorch Trials allows you to envision that in HD. The atmosphere of the characters is so crystal clear with the amazing writing, it leaves me in awe. “They set off just as the sun dipped below the horizon, making the dusty orange look almost purple.” A quote from The Scorch Trials, which demonstrates expertise in sublime imagery, another stupendous feature in which makes James Dashner’s book ideal for reading.

“ deep thrumming full of heavy thumps. It grew louder before he even realized what was going on, and soon it felt as though the noise were inside his skull, rattling his jaw and eardrums and sluicing down his spine.”

It’s one thing to say your lost in a book, it’s another to be trapped in the pages of a surreal terrain where every paragraph is another rung of the ladder to the answers. In todays world, young minds thrive for excitement and surprise and The Scorch Trials quenches that thirst with the unforeseeable journeys Dashner guides you through. The striking language is a gushing waterfall of description and adroit, portraying the graphic imagery that what your reading is reality, as if you are really there. The growing brains of young teenagers are filled with a little bit of everything, and reading awe-inspiring books like The Scorch Trials can help make the those “little bits of everything” into vast ideas.
