Interview with David! David| November 8, 1994|
David is a small,short, kind and timid 12 year old boy. Right from birth he was brought to the Labour Camp. David was always thought to never think for himself. His only friend from the camp was a man called, Johannes. Johannes was a french man, also captured and brought to the Labour Camp. Johannes was David’s only close and nice friend. David’s worst enemy at the Labour Camp, was the commander. He was
mostly referred to as “The Man.” Now that David has escape the Labour Camp, he gets to decide what he wants, and not under “them.” Q. 1. You have always been a small, quiet, and and shy boy. At the labor camp, you were always thought not to think for yourself. After finally escaping that place, will the thought of being alone and not able to think still bother you? A. Even though I had
left the Labour Camp, the thought of it and the people there still is in my mind. I have been so used to not being able to think for myself, that it will be a change for me to start thinking for myself, and making decisions for myself. Q. 2. “The Man” had hated you as long as he had known you and as long had you had known him. After realizing that “the man” was helping you escape the labor camp, what are your current feelings
toward him? A. Even though I had left the Labour Camp, my feelings against “The Man” are still the same. I have hated “The Man” for all my life. He has done terrible, terrible things to me. I believe that he had killed Johannes, and for that I will never forgive him. But the only thing that puzzles me about “The Man” is that, he had helped me escape that place. It puzzles me that, even though “The Man” had done so much harsh things to me, and yet he still helped me. Q. 3. As you know, Johannes died from a heart attack. What do you think about this? Do you believe he died from a heart attack or that “they” had killed him? A. I strongly believe that Johannes had been killed by “them.” I think that “The Man” really wanted to hurt me, so
he decided to take away my only friend. The only person that had been nice to me, was killzed. Because of this, my hate toward “them” had expanded even more. I believe that “The Man” wanted to hurt me, inwardly, and he got me. But, now that I have left that horrible place, Johannes will be proud of me. Q. 4. Now that you have reached Italy, how do you think that you can live without Johannes guiding you? A. Well, Johannes was really close to me at the Labour Camp, he had told me that Johannes would be with me until I left Salonica. Now that, I have reached Italy, I don’t know what I will do without the help and guidance from Johannes. Johannes, was always there to tell me what was proper, and what was incorrect. It will be hard to me, be
cause my journey to Denmark just started. But even without Johannes, this gives me a chance to make decisions on my own, without any help. Q. 5. Even though you are quite far away from the labour camp, do you think the baker and the other people of the town are going to try to return you back to “them?” A. To be honest, I am not sure. I have nightmares every night I sleep under that cave, that the baker and townspeople would get suspicious about me, and maybe try to turn me in. Even though I am really far away from “them” I should still be watching out just in case anything happens.

Believe Song Analysis The song, Believe by Breaking Benjamin, shows that no one can take control over you. It is your life and the decisions you make should reflect on what your goals and dreams. No one else is allowed to dictate how you live your life. “I’ll not be bothered, by you until, I’m picking sides.” When I first read this quote, it automatically made me think of David when he left the labour camp. It showed that he won’t be bothered by them anymore, and that he is picking sides and doesn’t care about what the people at the labour camp think. Another quote from this song is “Don’t pull me under, into the deep.” This quote relates to David because if something bad happens to you, then don’t bring me down with you. When I first saw this, I immediately thought of the quote “If I’m going down, then you’re going down with me!” The quote “And pulling the strings,” is a strong example of a metaphor. It is a metaphor to a puppet because the puppet master has the controls over the puppet and commands every move the puppet makes. This quote really relates to David because it shows that he is taking charge and that no one can else stop him. Another quote from this song is “my dead eyes,” this quote is an example of personification. The quote, “Don’t pull me under,” is another example of personification. The singer is saying that the thoughts
of the other person are pulling the person under their thoughts. “My dead eyes” is an example of a hyperbole because it is a statement that is not meant to be taken literally.
My book, I am David, relates to the song that I chose. The quotes from this song are a true example of what David is feeling towards the Labour Camp. For example, one of the quotes I said was “I’ll not be bothered....” From this quote it should me that, after David left the Labour Camp he said that he won’t be bothered my the people at the labour camp anymore. Another quote that really proves that my song relates to my book is “I don’t care what you want, I just want mine.” This quote told me that, after leaving the labour camp, David doesn’t care anymore what the people at the labour camp want; he only cares about what he wants. So he is learning to take a stand for himself.

“Johannes, I want to escape. You said that if we weren’t dead we could change things. But how do you know they’re going to let us live?” This is the story of a boy that was tortured in a labour camp. I am David; by Anne Holm is the perfect book for the grade 8 curriculums. This book has all the desired elements that make it perfect for grade 8’s to read. Here are my following reasons:

The first reason why I think that my book is really good for the curriculum is because the whole book’s timeline takes place during the World War II. So throughout the whole book t gives the reader some history of the War. The book will give the reader more information about a crucial event that happened. The history that is in this book gives the reader an understanding of how important the past was, it makes the reader acknowledge that their human history was a huge factor in the past. The second reason why I think that my book is extremely good for the grade 8 curriculum is because it has really good rich, descriptive, figurative language. This language will broaden the reader’s word choice and make the reader’s sentence structure better with variety. From example, a quote from the book says

“There were olives with their gnarled trunks and pale grey-green leaves whispering and quivering in the lightest breeze as if they were alive, and there were cypresses, tall and slender, pointing straight up into the sky.� This is an excellent example of a sentence rich language. The last reason why I think my book is an excellent choice to add to the grade 8 curriculums is because of its storyline and prop-
