What is United Nations Volunteers?

Since 1971, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme has been partnering with theUnited Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Some 9,682 UN Volunteers served with UNDP in 148 countries during the period 2007-2016.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.

We work with partners to integrate qualified, highly motivated and well supported UN Volunteers into development programming and promote the value and global recognition of volunteerism.

Eligibility To become a UNV we require: • University degree or higher technical diploma • At least 25 years old (no upper age limit) • Several years of relevant working experience • Good working knowledge of at least one of three UN working languages, English, French, or Spanish We also expect a strong commitment to the values of volunteerism and an ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

Modality

National UNV National UN Volunteers are nationals of the host country (or a refugee or stateless person with legal status in the country), normally recruited locally.

These volunteers concentrate in areas such as local community outreach. Recent university graduates with specializedskills are also recruited as national UN Volunteers.

International UNV International UN Volunteers are typically professionals with specialized knowledge.

They comefrom all walks of life and over 100 professions, bringing five to ten years of experience to their assignments. The average age of international UNV olunteers is 36.

UNV Online Volunteer Online volunteering allows organizations and volunteers to team up to address sustainable development challenges – anywhere in the world, from any device.

Online volunteering is fast, easy – and most of all, effective. When skilled, passionate individuals join forces online with great organizations working toward sustainable development goals, everyone wins.

Corporate Volunteer UNV has been applying corporate volunteering for decades through alliances with businesses.

Growing numbers of private sector partners are joining forces with UNV through onsite and online corporate volunteering and by backing UNV projects and programmes.

V- ACT Volunteer V-Act is a programme that allows people of diverse backgrounds to take part in community engagement.

This is a local volunteer network to support UN agencies. You can register and create your profile for participation.

UN Youth Volunteer UN Youth Volunteers�are a separate category of UN Volunteers recently created in response to the United Nations SecretaryGeneral’s call for greater engagement in volunteerism of history’s largest generation of people under 30. UN Youth Volunteers help the United Nations – one of the world’s most important intergovernmental organizations - to fulfill its mission.

These young volunteers are assigned to host United Nations agencies to work on the frontlines of political, developmental and humanitarian field operations. UN Youth Volunteers are young people aged 18 to 29 years who want to engage in development and peace initiatives worldwide.

What WE We do?

UNV supports peace and sustainable human development around the globe through the promotion of volunteerism and mobilization of volunteers. It is active in 126 countries, with over 90 field units and a number of regional offices.

In 2016, UNV directly mobilized almost 6,600 UN Volunteers to serve either in their own countries or abroad.

These UN Volunteers contributed to the peace and development projects and initiatives of 30 United Nations system partners. About 83 per cent of UN Volunteers came from countries ofthe global South. Almost 40 per cent of UN Volunteers were assigned within their own countries.

UNV’s Online Volunteering service connects United Nations entities, civil society organizations and public institutions directly with capable and motivated individuals. In 2016, some 12,500 UN Online Volunteers engaged in development over the internet, completing over 22,600 assignments.

UNV Bangladesh’s Special Innovation Hub is a space created with the vision to translate ideas into reality.

To colleagues, it offers meeting rooms, media room with technological support, and workshops for 50 people and more.

For projects, it provides flexible volunteer solutions for research and pilot testing for eventual scale-up.
