ELEGANCE AND EXPERTISE IN LASER CUTTING

Lightwave Laser continues to move forward as a leader in decorative laser cutting—providing a variety of products to the hospitality, retail, healthcare, commercial and residential markets. Our laser cutting expertise, variety of stock and custom materials, extensive pattern library, and talented art department means we have the skills and experience necessary for your project. We also pride ourselves on customer service. You will work with one internal Project Manager from initial questions through finished project.

During the past year, we’ve had the opportunity to work on many interesting projects including:

• Ceiling panels for a massive ballroom at MGM National Harbor, Oxon Hill, MD.

• Twenty-nine custom lightboxes for a private home theatre in Russia.

• A 26’ x 14’ custom bar light fixture in a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Albuquerque NM.

• Custom exterior panels for Fairmount Park Horticulture Center, Philadelphia, PA and REI, Rockville MD.

• Work for a variety of houses of worship, including Mosques, Synagogues, and Churches

• Tens of thousands of custom cut panels, for everything from cabinet doors to custom cat gates.

We are fortunate to work with many talented design professionals. This gives us some perspective to see trends in the industry. We’ve noticed the following trends in our business during the past year:

• Increased use of outdoor materials including powder coated aluminum, phenolic, and outdoor rated MDF.

• Rising popularity on Arabic/ Moroccan patterns moving beyond residential and into restaurants and hotels.

• Declining popularity of Mid-Century Modern patterns, and increased popularity of Modern and Modern Organic patterns.

• More painted wood—especially painted plywood for wall partitions.

• Increased use of laser cut panels as components incorporated into furniture and doors.

• More pearlescent powder coating of steel, and more gold paint.

Lightwave Laser has enjoyed significant growth every year since 2009. We do not take this growth for granted. Much of this growth is possible because design professionals trust us with their exciting and important projects. We continue to work on earning your trust, and continue working to advance our laser cutting capabilities with new materials, designs, and manufacturing capabilities.

“Choosing Lightwave Laser to execute our design for our Samurai Teppanyaki Restaurant, on the island of St. Kitts, was one of the best design decisions we’ve made. Working with the team to take our design concepts through to production then shipping to the Caribbean – was fluid and efficient – and we never had to leave our desk! We feel that our decorative panels and particularly our bar sign give our Samurai a unique, stand-out image on the island. We highly recommend Lightwave Laser!”

WALL PARTITIONS

Custom based on Star Pattern, Brighton Collectibles, Ferrara Art

Wall partitions are our most popular application, being as they help define a space, while also allowing light and visibility from other areas. For residential and hotel projects, a wall partition can be used to divide an entry area from the rest of the room: the entry area is both separate and connected. In a restaurant setting, they are commonly used to define the dining area from other areas such as a hallway, bar or kitchen. Back-lit options are available for these panels to add an even more stunning and decorative aesthetic.

BACKLIT

Backlit panels, also referred to as light boxes, can be used in a wide variety of applications and create a dramatic focal point for your space. We manufacture custom light boxes designed to your specifications, sized up to four feet by eight feet, and made of wood or metal. Each light box comes hardwired and ready for installation by your electrician. If you'd like, you can instead request a standard power cord.

Typical light boxes sit four inches deep from the wall and give off virtually no heat, with that, can be fully enclosed. They include white, low voltage LED lights, frosted light-diffusing acrylic panels, and a transformer with a dimmer. The LEDs come in a range of colors, and if preferred, a remote control.

For more technical information regarding light boxes, please see page X.

CEILINGS & SKYLIGHTS

Laser-cut ceiling and skylight coverings have been gaining popularity in the hospitality and design industry: it’s easy to see why. The applications are endless when you consider the many combinations of pattern, color, size, placement and lighting. A laser-cut panel adds interest and texture, whether it is back lit, used as a valance, wood stained, or painted. These eye-popping panels will be the center of attention, or create a finelytuned ambiance – your choice!

WINDOW COVERINGS

Pixel Pattern, Mohammad Ali - Brooklyn, NY

Window coverings can be the most dramatic application for our laser-cut panels. One of those reasons being that the light shining through changes throughout the day. The shadows cast by your panel create a subtle area of visual interest. Not only are the panels used for decorative purposes, but they also provide privacy. It's important to consider sun and moisture exposure when choosing your panel's material.

ROOM DIVIDERS & FLOOR SCREENS

The screens arrived and they are beautiful! We’re loving having them to look at every day!

CHRISTINA GABRIEL
Double Horseshoe Pattern, Wilson Lee

Dividing up a large space does not mean sacrificing beauty. Floor screens are an attractive yet versatile way of creating privacy or setting distinct locations in a large area. They can also be used to cover a less desirable room feature with a magnificent piece of functional art. Typically, our floor screens are 0.75 inches thick and can be hinged to stand alone. Your contractor can frame in the screen panels if thicker wood is desired.

STAIRWAY & DECK RAILINGS

Ornate Damask Pattern, Ayli Lapkoff

Another unique design feature is to use our panels for deck or stairway railings which can be enclosed in a beautiful pattern that provides both safety and privacy. By using a plywood core for added strength, we can help you choose patterns that meet code restrictions on opening size and function. Please keep in mind not all patterns are suitable.

For projects which require added strength and safety, acrylic or polycarbonate can be added behind the laser-cut panel. This eliminates any potential problem with opening sizes in the artwork and adds increased impact resistance and strength; we can provide photos of staircase railings constructed with this method.

CABINETRY & FURNITURE

Medina Pattern, Richfield Inc. - Pomona, CA

Incorporating laser-cut panels into your cabinety or furniture design is an easy way to add a unique feel. Custom artwork can be created to match other elements on your project, or you can use one of our pre-made patterns. The 0.25 inch laser-cut panel can be attached directly to your cabinet door as a decorative element, or for a more open look, your contractor can frame it in to your project on its own or in front of glass. Panels can also be back-lit with LED lights. Our furniture and cabinetry are frequently used in private residences, corporate work environments, and hotels.

RETURN AIR GRILLES & RADIATOR COVERS

Our laser-cut panels are meant to cover function with beauty. Laser-cut airreturn grills or radiator panels provide the open space needed for proper air circulation, and also enhance the environment. Wood is usually 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch thickness. Check with your HVAC specialist, but patterns usually need to provide a 50 - 70% open area.

DECORATIVE

Heavenly Bamboo Pattern, Morgante Wilson, Residence - Pompono Beach, FL

All of our panels are decorative, though sometimes a particular decorative element shines. Intricate and detailed patterns cut in metal or wood will create an eye-catching focus for your overall space. Select a pattern that will accentuate your existing decor, choose a wood finish that complements your flooring or trim, or go with a trendy powder-coated metal panel to match your color scheme. Panels can be customized and made to fit into your space, wherever that is. There are no limits!

SIGNAGE

Alternative to conventional signage, laser-cut signs draw attention to your logo and company branding. Lighted signs optimize effect and visibility. Modern solutions include solar, battery power, or low voltage LED elements. Signs can also be constructed for both indoor or outdoor applications. We use an outdoor MDF which can be painted, or a wood veneer on outdoor MDF with outdoor-rated adhesives for an all-weather product.

NEW 2019 PATTERNS

Our art department maintains an extensive library of work, featuring patterns inspired by clean natural lines and dramatic geometry from around the world. We are happy to modify any of our patterns to meet your needs. Whether bold graphics or subtle florals, you can utilize one of our patterns or create your own signature masterpiece. Our staff will work with you throughout the quoting, proofing, and manufacturing process, ensuring your project exceeds all expectations.

Because patterns are all uniquely built, they may not always fit perfectly within given dimensions at their standard scale. In this case, minor adjustments are made to the scale, so that it fits the dimension in the most aesthetically pleasing way. You will receive a detailed proof showing how the pattern fits on your panel size for approval.

INTRODUCING FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT PATTERNS

“The mission of an architect is to help people understand how to make life more beautiful, the world a better one for living in, and to give reason, rhyme, and meaning to life.”

Ask the average citizen to name a famous American architect and you can bet that their answer will be Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright gained such cultural primacy for good reason: he changed the way we build and live. Designing 1,114 architectural works of all types — 532 of which were realized — he created some of the most innovative spaces in the United States. With a career that spanned seven decades before his death in 1959, Wright’s visionary work cemented his place as the American Institute of Architects’ “greatest American architect of all time.”

CUSTOM PATTERN & SHAPES

We can use your own custom art, create art for you, or modify our pre-existing patterns to fit your needs. Any custom shapes or patterns, we can provide.

You must own the artwork you are providing (or have bought the rights) to use it as a laser-cut application. With that being said, we can use any image as inspiration to then generate original artwork just for you.

Custom shapes and patterns will require art time and additional costs, which can be discussed in further detail with your sales representative.

BETTER IN LARGER DIMENSIONS

These patterns are unique in that they look and fit better in larger panel dimensions. While they still can be used at a smaller size, they truly shine across a larger area.

MATERIAL & FINISHES

Over the years, we have expanded the materials and finishes available for your project. Material availability falls into three different categories.

Stock Materials

We carry inventory on our most commonly used materials. These stock materials have the advantage of reducing the lead time for your project. They also are economical, and are less complex compared to special ordering more exotic materials. We carry the following materials in stock, in a variety of different thicknesses:

• MDF

• Outdoor rated MDF

• Walnut veneer on MDF

• Maple veneer on MDF

• Alder veneer on MDF

• White Oak veneer on MDF

Special order but commonly available

The next category is material that is special-order but fairly easy to purchase. Typically, this material has a lead time of 3-5 weeks which happens in parallel with the art/ proof process. These items include:

• Fire-rated MDF

• Common veneers on fire rated MDF

• Common veneers on outdoor rated MDF

• Common veneers on plywood

• Other veneers such as Cherry, Poplar, Mahogany and Rift Oak

Special order uncommon materials

This includes items like certain engineered veneers, FSC-certified materials, and anything not carried by our regular vendors. Lead times on these materials are typically 4-8 weeks.

Finishes

The most common finishes are described on the following pages. In addition to the powder coating options, we do have the ability to finish with some metallic and pearlescent paints. Please contact us for more information on paint options.

STOCK WOOD

UNFINISHED MAPLE – MDF or PLY CORE

One of our most popular choices! It has a smooth surface, suitable for painting or staining a light color, and is slightly stronger and easier to paint than MDF. When extra strength is required, we offer 3/4” Maple with a ply core, available as a standard wood.

Standard thickness for MDF CORE: 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”

Standard thickness for PLY CORE Maple: 3/4”

UNFINISHED ALDER

Alder is very similar to Maple but slightly darker, and works well if you are staining a medium or dark color.

Standard thickness: 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”

UNFINISHED WALNUT

Our Walnut veneer is a beautiful woodgrain, suitable for staining or applying a clear coat to bring out its natural features.

Standard thickness: 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”

UNFINISHED RIFT-CUT WHITE OAK

White Oak veneer varies from a pale yellow to a brown, and can be mottled with gray. The grain is very straight with long rays. Great choice if your project requires dense, strong and durable wood.

Standard thickness: 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”

STOCK WOOD

MDF

Multi-density fiberboard is our most economical choice. It’s surface is flat and smooth, uniform, dense and free of knots or grain patterns. It makes a superb carrier for veneers. It is recommended for painting applications, and is not recommended for staining.

Standard thickness: 1/8”, 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”

OUTDOOR MATERIALS

OUTDOOR MDF

Excellent choice for outdoor use. This MDF is made using heat and pressure-treated material with non-toxic materials. While also waterproof, it adheres paint easily and has an impressive fifty-year warranty.

Standard thickness: 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”, 3/4”

PHENOLIC

A great choice for a outdoor applications, phenolic is made from resin and paper, making it extremely strong and dense. Phenolic is available in a beautiful matte black color which does not need any finishing, however, takes paint well.

Standard thickness: 1/4”

SPECIAL ORDER EXAMPLES

UNFINISHED BAMBOO – PLY CORE

We now have unfinished Bamboo with a ply core available as a standard wood. It is a fast-growing, sustainable wood choice and the ply core is extremely strong. It can be stained or clear-coated and is also beautiful if left unfinished.

Standard thickness: 1/8”

FIRE-RATED MDF

Fire rated MDF is a sustainable Class 1 retardant rated fiberboard. An additive is blended with the fibers during processing to spread flame retardant throughout the board. It can be sanded and painted without diminishing it’s fire retardant qualities.

Standard thickness: 1/8", 1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”

ACRYLIC

Acrylic is available as a special order in various colors and degrees of transparency. It can be laser-cut or used as a backing material. Various thicknesses and colors available

BACKING MATERIAL

WHITE LAMINATED SHOJI PAPER

White Laminated Shoji Paper has a beautifully textured surface. It's surface-washable, very durable, and has a rice-paper look.

Standard thickness: 2mm; Max Width: 3ft

TAN LAMINATED SHOJI PAPER

Holds the same qualities as White Laminated Shoji Paper, however, is more uniform in color.

Standard thickness: 2mm; Max Width: 3ft

LIGHT-DIFFUSING ACRYLIC

If you're back-lighting a panel, this is an excellent choice because it diffuses light well and has a uniform, frosted look. Additionally, it has a matte appearance on one side with shiny on the other.

Standard thickness: 1/16", Available in other sizes

METAL

Metal is a great material for certain applications. Compared to wood, it's stronger, much thinner, well-suited for outdoor use, and can be finished in an extremely large variety of powder-coating options. Our most common steel material thicknesses are 10, 12 and 14 gauge, or in inches, 0.141”, 0.109” and 0.078”. In aluminum, our most common thickness is 0.25”, although other thicknesses are available. Steel and aluminum material comes in sheets up to just under 5’ x 10’. Unlike wood, metal can be bent or rolled after laser cutting! This can make for some interesting and unique pieces.

The laser-cutting process introduces heat into the metal, and with that, create additional technical considerations when cutting certain patterns. Some patterns are too intricate or leave narrow lines and additionally can get too hot and warp. Please contact us if you are unsure about the pattern you have chosen in regard to using metal.

All steel should be powder-coated, unless you want a naturally rusted finish. Aluminum can be unfinished or powder-coated. Outdoor applications near salt water should use aluminum.

COLD ROLLED STEEL

A versatile alternative for both interior and exterior applications. Finish with UV stable powder-coating to showcase an array of colors and textures.

Standard thickness: 10, 12 and 14 gauge / 0.141”, 0.109” and 0.078”

ALUMINUM

Another perfect choice for exterior use, relatively lightweight, and can be installed outdoors without powder coating.

Standard thickness: 0.25”, other thicknesses available

STANDARD WOOD STAIN COLORS

We offer eight “standard” stain colors, which can be applied to any of our four “standard” wood veneers — Maple, Walnut, Alder and Oak. This means a total of thirty-two different combinations of stain colors and wood: we can provide you with samples if you'd like. The stains are hand applied, then finished with a clear finished powder-coat for a final product that's ready for installation.

POWDER-COATING

POWDER-COATING OPTIONS FOR EACH MATERIAL

STEEL & ALUMINUM

Choose from the more than 5,000 finishing options offered from Prismatic Powders. There are no “standard” finishes, so powder is ordered for every job. Some finishes, such as pearlescent, require multiple steps and are more expensive.

Please notify us if your project is located within a few miles of salt water. There are additional considerations for these locations.

MDF

Three different categories of finishes:

Primer which is ready for your painting. Powder coated primer is durable, will save painting time, and works with any paint.

15 "standard” colors (page 75). These colors are in stock and do not require a minimum powder purchase.

250 special order RAL colors

A wider variety of color options including some metallic finishes. Requires a minimum purchase and extra lead time for the powder.

The general durability of powder-coating is superior to other finishing options. It is baked on resin and cures in a 300-degree oven. It doesn’t crack or flake off, sprays on electro-statically, and contains no VOCs. It's an environmentally-friendly finish and similar to a hard-baked enamel.

Unlike painting, powder-coating is permanent and does not require re-painting. Wood material is needed at a minimum of 0.5” thick. With that being said, 0.25" thick panels are offered in unfinished wood or pre-finished options.

WOOD VENEER ON MDF

Two different categories of finishes:

Clear finish on any veneer option with clear powder-coating. This includes standard veneers of Maple, Walnut, Alder and Oak.

Clear finish on “standard” stain colors and veneers – 32 different options using the eight standard stains and the four standard veneers.

BORDER TREATMENT & PATTERN OPTIONS

You have a vision for your panels, and there are practical aspects to consider such as how they'll be installed—will the edges be covered or exposed, is the thickness appropriate for the application, should the scale of the pattern be increased or decreased? Our sales representatives can help you decide what will work best. Borders can be customized, holes can be pre-cut, and several other customizations can be accommodated. This section gives a few examples of the most common border options and panel adjustments.

BORDER TREATMENTS

WHAT IS A BORDER ?

A border is the uncut area that extends beyond the artwork. Borders are important for the stability of the panel, creating a finished look, and helpful for installation of the panels. Panel size refers to the total size of the panel, including the border, while art area refers to the area on the panels that is laser cut. Standard border size is 1,” but can vary according to your needs.

PANEL SIZE (INCLUDES BORDER)

Japanese Fans Pattern, Murphy Moon Design

BORDER TREATMENT & PATTERN OPTIONS

The following drawings illustrate how border treatments differ when using two panels to be installed next to each other, without space in between.

BORDER UNIFORM

Border is the same size on all panel edges, including where the panels meet.

BORDER 1/2 SIZE WHERE PANELS MEET

Border is adjusted to be half the size where panels meet, making the interior border appear the same as the border around all of the outside edges.

NO BORDER WHERE PANELS MEET

Pattern flows continuously across panels without a border where the panels meet.

This treatment may not be available for all patterns.

Custom Pattern, Greg Zall Woodworking & Studio Bondy Architecture, Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School - Palo Alto, CA

NO BORDER WHERE PANELS MEET, PATTERN DICTATES WHERE PANELS ARE CUT

Pattern flows continuously across panels without a border where the panels meet. In this case, the division of panels needs to be contoured around the pattern or there will be pieces that fall out. This also potentially changes the panel sizes.

PANEL REPEATED

Second panel is a repeat of the first. This is a cost-effective solution, however, the pattern can look awkward where the panels meet. The continuous pattern option looks much more aesthetically pleasing (see previous page).

Scaling patterns down past a 10% reduction incurs additional fees to offset for extra laser-cutting time. 1st Panel 2nd Panel 1st Panel 2nd Panel

HOW TO INSTALL

We do not provide installation services for a couple of reasons

We are not licensed contractors and ship jobs throughout the world. With that, it isn’t the easiest for us to be on-site. However, we have experience as we've worked on thousands of projects over the years, and can provide you with options and suggestions for your installation.

The following pages contain some information on hanging ceiling panels, wall panels, and light-box installation. In addition to the information here, you can contact us with any questions you have or for more details.

We are in the process of expanding our materials and instructions for installation— some of which will include necessary hardware. All in all, you should always work with a licensed contractor for any of your installation needs.

PROVIDED WALL MOUNT SOLUTIONS

KEYHOLE SLOTS

For a flush mount to the wall without visible fasteners, a keyhole slot is an easy to install and cost-effective solution. One or two keyhole slots can be routered in the top border of a panel.

VELCRO

Velcro is another easy way to hang your panels. While it is not suitable for large or heavy panels, Velcro is great for thin panels, allows the panel to sit close to the wall (approx. 1/8”), and is ideal for window covers because of how easily you can remove and re-apply them.

MAGNETS

We recommend only implementing this method if panels are 0.5” or thicker. Each panel may require a different number of magnets depending on weight and size. Magnets hold approximately 5 lbs each and may be used on a wall or the panel when attaching to a steel frame.

VHB DOUBLE-STICK TAPE

VHB (Very High Bond) is great for mounting 1/4" thick panels and ad heres very well to almost any surface. Works on textured walls but is for indoor use only.

PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) is typically used for overlaying a laser cut panel on a solid backing panel to create a layered effect, we can provide a PSA liner to adhere our panels to smooth surfaces. This is placed across the entire panel before it's cut.

MOUNTING SOLUTIONS – CONT'D

T-SCREW SECURITY HANGERS

For mounting in public locations where one wants to insure no one can move the panels, we can provide T-Screw security hangers and jigs to help install them. This mounting system features two Z-Clip items at the top of the panels to hang the panel, and one slotted bracket at the bottom, which accepts a T-headed screw. The T-headed screw is given a quarter turn, locking the panel in place.

INDIVIDUAL PIECES

INDIVIDUAL PIECES

INTERLOCKING BRACKETS

Z Brackets installed at the top and bottom of your panels provide an extremely strong and stable installation of your panels. This method is ideal for larger panels or heavier panels.

BOLTS / STANDOFFS

Bolts or standoffs can be used for any size panel, in any thickness or weight. With this method, the spacing between the wall and panel can vary, which allows the panel to be back lit or spot lit if desired. Using this approach creates a more sculptural look.

LIGHTBOX ASSEMBLY

Light boxes can be a beautifully-lit piece of art or signage. A 4-inch deep light box is our standard light box depth, however, we can make them as shallow as 2.5 inches or as deep as 8 inches. LED lights are distributed evenly across the backing box to generate a uniform light. This is assisted by a light-diffusing acrylic that mounts to the back of the laser-cut panel.

Warm white (3700K) is our standard lighting; a dimmer switch that's compatible with our silent transformers is available for hardwired lightboxes. We also offer colorchanging light boxes that can be set to any color in the RGB spectrum. One remote can control multiple colored light boxes for your convenience and ease of use.
