AMS15. APPRENTICE CLASS SCHEDULES

Apprentice Chemical Engineering (Three Weeks) Week 1: Elephant Toothpaste Explosion; Week 2: Crazy Crystal Creation; Week 3: Handmade Recycled Paper The curriculum for the Aerospace Engineering program is designed to introduce students to the concepts of aerodynamics, propulsion, structural design and flight through a series of activities that explore different types of aircrafts. Students will learn the basic mechanics of flying machines through hands-on testing and revising their designs using elements of the engineering design process. Apprentice Environmental Engineering (Four Weeks) The curriculum for environmental engineering is designed to introduce students to green engineering and provide them with a new approach to the engineering design process that adds constraints such as durability, sustainability and environmental permanence to the equation. Studies include natural filtration, zipsail obstacle course, wind power challenge and soda ring challenge. Apprentice Electrical Engineering (Three Weeks) During the electrical engineering classes, students will use the engineering design process to design, create, test and refine basic electronics and circuits. Students experiment with snap circuits to discover the capabilities of major electronic components. In addition, students will build their own flashlights and explore the world of magnetic energy by building their own magnetic levitation vehicle. Apprentice LEGOŽ EV3 Pilot Program (Four Weeks) Make It Move: Students are challenged to design, build and program robots that move using motors with rotation sensors. In five projects, students will apply mathematics and science knowledge to create robots that measure distance and speed, move without using wheels, maximize power to move up an incline and move and turn to create regular polygons. Students will also apply their knowledge of simple and complex machines and use ratios to describe proportional relationships. Instructor: San Francisco Engineering for Kids Time/Days: 4:35–5:35 p.m./Thursdays Class Fee: $300 Grades: Second through fifth. Minimum six, maximum 24 students. Location: Oak Campus Dates: 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20, 3/27, 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8, 5/15, 5/22 (14 lessons)

CREATIVE WRITING ACW1. CREATE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE STORYBOOK: ENGLISH STORY WRITING AND ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOPS

The theme of the workshops will be to write about characters who journey through a special world as they face new challenges and adventures. Students will create personal, illustrated storybooks and present story readings during the last session of the course. This workshop provides students with ongoing practice with concrete steps to the writing process including brainstorming, choosing a topic, organizing ideas, writing drafts, revising, editing and publishing. The illustration lessons will focus on visual development and presentation of story characters in various scenes. Students will practice sketching with live models, learn to draw from observation and learn to convert ideas into images. For more information, please contact Writing Coach Shu-Hsien Ho at shuhsienho@gmail.com. Instructor: Shu-Hsien Ho Time/Days: 3:00–4:15 p.m./Fridays (please note extended time) Class Fee: $415 Grades: Third through fifth grades. Minimum five, maximum 12 students.

OTHER INTERESTS AOI1. LEARN TO PLAY BRIDGE!

Come learn to play bridge and get better grades in the process. Did you know that learning to play bridge can help a study do better in school? We are very fortunate to have the American Contract Bridge League come to teach our children to play bridge. This class will also be offered to FAIS and IHS students. For more information about bridge and the ACBL, please visit www.acbl.org. Instructor: ACBL Class Fee: $185 Time/Days: 4:00–5:30 p.m./ Mondays Grades: Second grade and up. AOI2. DRAMA CLASS NEW!

In this class, students will benefit in many different physical, cognitive and social and emotional ways from both free play and planned dramatic activities. We will introduce three stories in 12 sessions. We will introduce the background of the story, vocabulary, the characters and read and discuss the story. Students will make puppets and practice the story with the puppets. Students will choose their favorite characters to play and make simple costumes. During the final session, students will perform the story in costume. Instructor: Carol Xie Time/Days: 4:00–5:00 p.m./Thursdays Class Fee: $185 Grades: Kindergarten and first grades. Minimum six, maximum 12 students. AOI4 A/B/C/D/E/F. CHINESE SPEECH CLUB NEW!

The goal of the Chinese speech club is to teach students how to prepare for a speech from formulation of the topic to speech delivery. Club members do not need to be participating in any speech contests to be part of this club. The minimum club size is five, the maximum is seven students. All speech clubs will meet for 10 sessions. Kindergarten speech club will be adjusted to fit the needs of our students. The instructor will assist the students in preparing an oral presentation. Please note, every effort was made to accommodate all surveyed participants. If these times do not work for your child’s schedule please contact Auxiliary Program Director, Kevin Lee, at k_lee@cais.org or 415865-6010 to request alternate times.
