TRASHTALKS Drew gives us the skinney on diet, skincare, and living more sustainable lifestyle
editor's notes Delays, hold ups, slow ups, its all one big rodeo show of fuckery you can’t seem to get yourself out of when you have one busy day after another. When and where do we find the time to take care of ourselves? I mean really take care of ourselves. You know, the kind of care that involves pampering to the highest degree, eating healthy, exercising, and sustaining a stress-free environment. It’s almost as if never. Its obvious we as a society value certain aspects of our health more then others. We place more value on achieving and maintaining an exuberant lifestyle than maintaining our health. Let’s use healthy eating as an example. Have we minimized or eliminated eating healthy from our self-care routine just to save for a new pair of Tom Ford glasses or our dream house? Or, perhaps to get caught up on bills because eating healthy and self-pamering can be expensive? Possibly. The point is this, our self-care is directly related to our health and should never be compromised. As TRASHTALKS Drew states in his open letter to me, “think of beauty as a function of health,” we must remember to incorporate healthy habits into our lives to achieve a balanced lifestyle.

SKIN
When I look at myself in the mirror, it doesn’t reflect the perception of the world. What it reflects is a whole being with a pure heart that is in search for the same beauty it sees in soo many. I find my eyes, nose, teeth, and smile. Most importantly, I find my skin. Skin so rich with pigment that it makes the sun bleed Tears up at the very sight of my fathers seed. A creation only he (God) could fathom and put together from matter and wind. What does the world say about your skin? If it could, it would speak to my soul. It would tell me I’m more or less. Or, make me feel weak and cold. Perhaps, less IS really more. To me, it’s all the same I don’t care, really, what they say. It’s all up to me. My emotions. My perspective. My image. My skin. In the end, beauty is beauty.
ALESSIA CARA
SCARS TO YOUR BEAUTIFUL
But there's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark You should know you're beautiful just the way you are And you don't have to change a thing, the world could change its heart No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

REDEFINING #BEAUTY:
“WHEN YOU COME FROM A PLACE OF GENUINE SELF-LOVE AND POSITIVITY, YOU IMMEDIATELY BECOME A MORE ATTRACTIVE PERSON TO THE WORLD”
Nighttime Beauty Routine: I begin my nighttime beauty routine in the shower. I like to exfoliate my body using shower gloves because they are less abrasive than scrubs. If I do scrub, then it’s with a super simple oil and sugar or salt combo. After that I’ll wash my face using Dermalogica’s [Double Cleansing] method and if I have time, I’ll apply a cream exfoliating mask or hydrating mask while I am still in the shower to get the added heat and steam benefit! Once I’m out of the shower, I literally slather my body in 100% organic virgin argan oil (I buy mine from Trader Joe’s!), which I swear by for smooth, baby soft skin. For my face, I like to finish with makeup remover (Neutrogena), toner, vitamin C and a rich nighttime moisturizer (all Dermalogica). I never ever sleep with makeup on (that is like death to your skin!) and I am a huge fan of using silk pillowcases and eye masks, which help retain moisture in your hair and skin — and make you feel like a goddess!

Plant-based Is the Way to Go:
Advice to My Younger Self:
I switched to eating more of a plant-based diet a few years ago and that has had tremendous health and beauty benefits for me. I still eat seafood, and for special occasions I’ll eat meat or other animal products, but I’m 100% vegan at home. It’s important to make sure you are eating well balanced meals no matter what type of eating plan you keep, but I’ve seen a tremendous benefit to my skin without one specific food group: dairy. I LOVE mac and cheese as much as the next girl but for less breakouts, less puffiness and less allaround inflammation I will gladly give it up! Do what is best for you, of course, but if you’re having skin issues try no-dairy for a month and see! We are what we eat! Also important is drinking LOTS of water (I aim for 3 liters per day), working out (I love hot yoga, hiking and general training) and keeping stress (and therefore breakoutcausing hormones) in check! I’m also very new to meditation, but it’s already helped me so much with self-care.
One day, all of the things that you think are wrong about yourself are going to be the things that help make you successful. Stop wasting time being so hard on yourself and start loving the skin that you’re in. How I Define Beauty: To be beautiful is to be self-confident. Competing for Miss New York USA and being a part of the Miss Universe organization taught me the importance of being confidently beautiful, as their motto states. Outward beauty starts from within. Believe in your worth. Believe in the uniqueness that you bring to the world. There is only one of you, ever. Cherish and celebrate that. Believe in your ability to inspire and change lives for the better. When you come from a place of genuine self-love and positivity, you immediately become a more attractive person to the world.

WRITTEN BY KRISTELLE BEECHER, MBA WRITER, MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE I’m not sure about the majority of us, but this year for me has been unlike any other. At first, I’d coined that is was busy. Shortly after, I quickly decided it was stressful and then at some point I looked up and deemed this year as one of the roughest years so far. Now, as I reflect on the half of the year that has passed and the remaining months that are speedily creeping up on us, I realize my commentaries of the past months’ experience have set the tone for my reactions. We all hear about the great “Law of Attraction” and some believe that it’s a bunch of phooey. But what about faith? I, personally, do believe that your emotional maturity is created through understanding and positivity.
Let me be fair and say that sometimes, things do happen – good, bad and in between – but our reactions and our understanding of those situations can greatly change some of these outcomes. So, I’ve taken it upon myself to help you! I’ve compiled a list of habits that will let you know if you are your own problem. Sounds rough? Sounds mean? Good. Let’s take a gander: 1. You are constantly complaining. There is a difference between complaining and venting. Look, I’m preaching to myself here too. I’ve had to learn that it’s okay to be frustrated, tired, angry, upset, and confused.
Living in your frustration, tiredness, anger, and confusion is a different story. Take a look at this picture of your brain. *Science tells us that rumination can negatively affect the neural circuits of the brain. Even more interesting is that what we call “negative energy” creates even more negative neural activity in the brain than “positive energy.” Fix it: Try meditating and praying a couple of minutes throughout your day. Create positive energy around you through hobbies and constantly compel yourself to do more positive. Fuel your brain with some *juicy goods (try turmeric). In a word, watch your circle sis.
2. You are doubting yourself. I know how easy it is to get knocked off your game. Letting people into your head and mess up your momentum can be a slow manipulation. These feelings of doubt could originate from external sources, but when they are coming from you, it’s time to check yourself. There have been many great success stories that derived from failure, but with doubt you don’t even give yourself a chance to fail. If you haven’t had a chance to learn from your past, I’ll share a secret: *you learn more from failure than you could ever with success. However, doubting that you could be successful is one failure I’m not sure you have the opportunity to learn from. What do you gain from doubt?
3. You are comfortable. Okay, this one is tough. If you realize that you do have some room for improvement but are pretty chill in that spot, okay. Cool. Not everyone is a self-starter, some people do need some motivation. But even in the presence of motivation, if there is a lack of desire, being motivated means nothing. You might as well just pull out a book and get real cozy in your stagnation. Sometimes consistency kills satisfaction, if this is you, let’s create a game changer.
These 3 tips packed a whole punch of reality. I shuddered a bit myself as I found myself in one or two of these, but the greatest thing you can do to get out of your own way is to be honest! Spend time with yourself understanding who you are and what makes you tick. It will take time to learn and accept all of the pieces of yourself you find that are unconventional and beautiful.
2 3 1
Fix it: When you mess up, what are you saying to yourself? Who are you letting define your mistakes? If it’s others, either leave that situation or affirm yourself. Are you negatively defining your own mistakes? Give yourself a break. We all are mess ups! Life mastery is a gift only held by God. Fixing doubt starts with changing how you perceive failure.
Fix it: Get out of your comfort zone. Try something new that you haven’t done before. Find out what you’re spending your time doing and *invest in yourself by creating a bucket list (and actually doing them), expand your network and meet new people, shrink your friend circle and lose the neagive people. Just get up and do something – but make sure it counts.
Nobody can get it for yourself like you can – START NOW! *Please see source

#RAW PER SPEC TIVE
W/ TRASHTALKS DREW Hey Cairo, Excited to provide some insight for your blog. It wasn’t until I relocated to Atlanta, Georgia that I realized how important selfcare and skin was in my life. Everyone is either running, working out or jumping on the newest skin care trend(s). I have always been super disciplined with my skincare routines, facials and my night and daytime skin care regimen, However, that all changed when the climate changed. Being a Floridian, who has lived in different parts of Florida for about 24 years of my life; the climate is warm and although sometimes, excessive but still inviting. When the colder climate came around, I quickly noticed the thin layers of products I typically wore weren’t as effective. From there , my routine changed and i created this list of helpful tips. I've slowly been transitioning to a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable lifestyle and have been finding products that aligned perfectly with my new lifestyle habits. I avoid red meat and have since 2008. I don’t eat pork, or drink [and eat] food items with heavy dyes; Trust me, it makes a big difference. I’ve added more water and herbal teas to my life and my skin has cleared up drastically. I also had to cut back on coffee, and although the withdrawals and headaches are bad, I feel a lot better.
COMMENTARY BEFORE I DECIDED TO CREATE A DITIGAL MAGAZINE, I DECIDED TO DO A COLLAB BLOG POST ABOUT SELF-CARE ROUTINES. I ASKED AS MANY PPL AS POSSIBLE TO JOIN IN. DREW’S INSTAGRAM PAGE STOOD OUT THE MOST, AND HE WAS KILLING IT ON THE SELFCARE W/ LUSH, BRANDLESS, AND MORE. HERE’S HIS RESPONSE. -CAIRO

I've slowly been transitioning to a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable lifestyle and have been finding products that aligned perfectly with my new lifestyle habits. I’ve added more water and herbal teas to my life and my skin has cleared up drastically. I also had to cut back on coffee, and although the withdrawals and headaches are bad, I feel a lot better. Healthy Skin- Care Tips for men and women: 1. Always wear an SPF or Sunscreens before leaving your home. SPF usually lasts about 2 hours so having some to-go is recommended too. 2. Drink lots of water. 3. Come up with a skincare routine that works for you. 4. Always apply products from Thinnest to thickest. 5. Let’s avoid products with harsh chemicals, toxins and fragrances. 6. Never sleep in Makeup; Always wipe your make up off. Micellar water or gentle make-up wipes work Perfectly. 7. Think of beauty as a function of health. So, let’s try to achieve the highest state of health; clean foods, beverages and skincare products.
