Hi I’m Caitlin!

I’m a 21 year old designer from South Wales who has just graduated with an Interior Design and Styling degree from Arts University Plymouth.

I consider myself a thoughtful and playful designer, this is demonstrated through the colour palettes and ethos of each project I have undertook.

I believe that as a designer, it’s key to incorporate your personality and individuality into a project because these aspects can at times be neglected in everyday life whilst still meeting client needs and expectations. In addition to being mindful of the dynamic nature of the design industry and sustainability principles.

Final Major Project Forest School for a Rainy Day

My FMP was in collaboration with the Forest School Association which is a child centred learning programme that offers opportunities for holistic growth through play, exploration and supported risk taking in a hands on natural environment. My project was in aid of this when the UK weather affects outdoor activities. The site is located in a grade 2 listed building in Devonport, Plymouth which is known for its deprivation therefore this space also benefits those who do not have access to green spaces and cars to drive to local nature reserves. My space has 3 main areas - The Garden, The Nest and the Parent Cafe all of which focus on sustainability, inclusivity and the connection to the outdoors.

Programmes Used:

I have completed an axonometric view of the space using Sketchup to show it in 3D. This is a beneficial way to display the whole space.

SITE OVERVIEW

The concept and colour scheme of this project were inspired by nature. The main space called ‘The Garden’ includes elements that act as they would do in an outdoor environment like an artificial campfire that allows for communal discussions between staff and children, a sensory space for children who feel a bit overwhelmed,an artificial river with lily pads that children can jump on which make a variety of noises and many other aspects that you would find outdoors or in a playground.

*Please note work was collective

Working in a team of 5, we had 4 days to design a comfortable and functional home in Wimbledon, London, for a multigenerational family. Our design needed cater to the unique needs of each family member while promoting inclusivity, accessibility, and a sense of community within the household. We developed a concept, researched into the location and how we could sustainably source from this area, produced sketches, a materials board and floorplans. We were all set individual tasks to achieve milestones throughout. I was responsible to create, edit and render the floorplans.

Healthcare Design The Mustard Tree

This was a live brief to redesign The Mustard Tree cancer support centre in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. The brief was to create a bright but cosy, inspiring and relaxing series of spaces that interconnect to speak the same narrative that appeal to a wide range of patients. I designed a gender neutral, hedonistic escape series of spaces that will bring hope to the patients that are using it. I had to understand what not only the client needed/wanted from the space but staff ,patients and support members as well therefore it was crucial to have a design that appealed to all of its users and be mindful of the sensitive nature of the project and also research the different specifications of healthcare design.

There’s no “average” way people experience cancer. We are affected by our environment, support system, people we engage with, past experiences, oncologists, and the particular type and stage of cancer that they have. Therefore, the psychological aspect of my design needed to be important.

Restaurant Design

Abalone

This project was self directed where I created my own brief, completed a site survey, branded the project including name and marketing material as well as the interior of the restaurant. My aim was to design a contemporary Chinese seafood restaurant situated in Plymouth’s cobbled streets of the Barbican by creating a new and exciting experience for the area whilst creating the same atmosphere as other restaurants on the Barbican. I wanted to divert away from traditional Chinese colour schemes but with it still being distinct.

Programmes Used:

DESIGN CONCEPT & BRANDING

The concept of the restaurant showcases a captivating, luxurious scheme inspired by Abalone shells. The rich colour scheme creates a oceanic atmosphere whilst the darkness of the space adds depth and sophistication to create an enchanting dining experience.

Alongside, I branded the project with elements including and Instagram page, takeaway bags, a menu, uniform and a logo to give my project a real identity.

I produced these rendered elevations to show examples of the FF&E and Finishes of the restaurant and used AutoCAD and ProCreate to render them to add people, lighting and textures. I have also used a sweep technique to display the render, this works well as it links to the sea theme of my scheme and you can also see more of the technical drawing.
