Robotics Challenge

Cogs Take “Nature’s Fury” by Storm W hat do LEGO robotics, natural disasters, and public presentations have in common?

Just ask the Cogs, a team of Kitsap County 4-H kids who competed in the Washington State FIRST LEGO Final Championships in Ellensburg in February 2014. The Cogs were among 110 teams that advanced to the state finals after winning in regional tournaments across the state. The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a robotics competition with a different theme each year drawn from real events in society. This year the theme is “Nature’s Fury,” and the 9–14-yearolds are focusing on natural disasters. To compete, teams had to build a small robot that could accomplish challenges, find an innovative solution to a problem related to a natural disaster, and present their work at the competition—all while demonstrating FLL core values such as friendly competition. More than 550 teams competed in this year’s qualifying rounds. The Cogs decided to look at the rebuilding process after the typhoon in the Philippines. They researched the challenges people faced and designed a post-emergency shelter that doubled as a rain catchment for fresh water. They determined the cost of implementation and shared their solution with missionaries stationed in Tacloban City, first responders in Kitsap County, and an insurance adjuster who had lived through three typhoons. The Cogs took the initial contests by storm, winning the Robot Performance Award at the Regional Qualifier in Spanaway for the best score in the Robot Game, and the Innovative Solution Award at the Western Washington Semi-Finals in Mill Creek for their post-emergency shelter design.

This season started back in September 2013 when a bunch of kids got together with the Kitsap County 4-H Tech Wizard Program Coordinator, Robyn Rogers, to form a team. They ended up forming two teams. Both the Cogs and the Sprockets consist of youth who have varying degrees of experience with programming but all with a desire to learn and a love for all things LEGO. The Cogs emerged as a more experienced team of five boys and one girl who all had some background in LEGO Robotics. The Sprockets are a younger team of six boys, all eager to learn how to program their robot and work together. Both teams practiced two days a week not only improving their robot game but also deciding on a natural disaster to study how best to prepare, stay safe, and rebuild. In addition to learning how to program, the Cogs met with professionals in the field of natural disasters, worked with adult mentors in STEM professions, and gained experience in all areas of the Life Skills Wheel. The Sprockets chose to focus on earthquake preparedness. After meet-

ing with experts at the University of Washington’s seismology lab, they designed an early earthquake alert system that would send a signal to fire alarms, cell phones, and specially designed personal earthquake alarms. The rookie team impressed the judges, advancing all the way to the semi-finals as a result of their hard work and “Coopertition” (that is, cooperation and competition at the same time). The Cogs faced their last challenge of the robotics season at the State Finals. They shared their research with judges, matched their programming skills against other teams, and showed the whole tournament what it means to have Gracious Professionalism (that is, the ability to shine without gloating). Although the Cogs had what judges refer to as a “bad robot”—one that doesn’t perform the way you want—these kids walked away with a better understanding of how their innovative ideas can change the world. They are working hard over the summer alongside the Sprockets to hone their skills for next year’s challenges.

Upcoming 4-H Events National Science Day to focus on Disaster Relief 4-H youth encouraged to build an aerodynamic transportation device The annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD) is an exciting, interactive learning experience that engages thousands of youth across the country in conducting the National Science Experiment. The 2014 4-H NYSD event will take place on October 8 in the nation’s capital (the other Washington). Washington State 4-H’ers have been joining in the fun of the annual science experiments since the first was conducted in 2008! The University of Arizona developed the 2014 National Science Experiment: Rockets to the Rescue! In light of recent natural disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan, the National 4-H Council is tasking youth with the mission to design and build an aerodynamic transportation device that can deliver a payload of nutritious food to disaster victims. Youth will apply engineering concepts, develop math skills, and learn about nutrition, all while helping to solve a relevant, global issue. Experiment kits are available to support your science event and give youth a hands-on experience in science. Make plans now to engage youth of all ages in your local “Science Day” in October and use the experiment as a springboard to explore aerospace science.

UPCOMING 4-H CONFERENCES 4-H Know Your Government Conference 2015 February 14–17, 2015, Olympia “Digital Citizenship: Building Responsible Citizens Using Media” The Know Your Government (KYG) Conference serves to strengthen the connection between youth and our political and social networks through education, experience, application, and inspiration. Through preconference orientation, participants will learn how to identify a concern in their community and gain the tools needed to contribute to its solution. They will also study a variety of news reporting media and learn to recognize bias. At the conference in Olympia, their work will continue as they discover and practice how to use media as a change agent.

4-H Summer Teen Conference June 28–30, 2015, WSU Pullman Reach your full leadership potential, have fun, and experience college life at the summer Teen Conference. This 3-day program features action-filled activities, educational workshops, national speakers, college and career information, and recreation. Membership is open to anyone age 5 and in kindergarten through 12th grade for most programs. Adult volunteers are always welcomed. Extension offers a variety of adult classes and training to get you started.

It is also possible to download and print many 4-H publications listed in this guide using Adobe Acrobat. What kinds of things can I do in 4-H?

4-H offers a wide variety of projects and activities, including workshops, conferences, camps, community service projects, and leadership development opportunities for both youth and adults at local, district, state, national, and international levels. How do I choose 4-H projects and publications?

Many publications recommended by Washington State University Extension 4-H may be purchased from National 4-H, www.4-h.org/resourcelibrary. Others may be ordered from WSU Extension at http://pubs.wsu.edu (or use the order form included at the back of this catalog). Some publications may be on hand at your local Extension office. Availability of publications will vary.

Club or group leaders will help youth choose projects according to their interests and ages. Some projects or publications are recommended for specific grade levels and are coded accordingly. A Model of Leadership

he vision of WSU 4-H Youth Development is to help young people become productive citizens that are ready to meet the changing needs of a diverse society.

To become contributing individuals who are effective and proactive, today’s youth must develop positive leadership knowledge, attitudes, skills, and aspirations. Fortunately for youth in Washington State, a strategic plan has been in place since 2005 to assist them develop these leadership skills.

The Leadership Triangle model helps to establish a clear pathway to greater leadership roles and opportunities, as well as practice and strengthen the leadership skills applicable to the ages and stages of child development. The bottom of the triangle represents the largest number of 4-H member involvement. This is typically youth ages 5–8 engaged in club projects. Although young, these members can start to learn and practice leadership skills based on their development level. Demonstrations and record books provide basic exposure to public speaking and documentation. Simple tasks on committees, acclamation to meeting basics, and community service are also great starting places. At this stage, 4-H’ers respond well when adult leaders encourage cooperation, participation in the process, and positive approval for their successes. Middle school youth are eager to work in groups, expand and use their reasoning skills, and practice early decision-making skills. They are ready for officer positions within their club, counselor positions at county 4-H camps, and state representation at district rallies where they can expand beyond the familiarity of their club setting. These types of roles encourage their

The Leadership Triangle

problem-solving skills, positive social interactions, and capacity for responsibility. High school youth begin to focus on personal as well as group goals, peer involvement, and solving reallife challenges. They are learning to manage their time, follow through on a team, and see how their actions can impact the future. State events, where they can build and strengthen their skills in these and other areas, are inviting. Teens are eager to meet others their age outside their home county borders and explore higher education and career options. Working within positive youth-adult partnerships on boards or planning events where their voice and ideas are heard helps teens build confidence and direction. Fewer youth are engaged in the 4-H state program level of the Leadership Triangle compared to the county and club levels, but the

training and related opportunities are exceptional for those who are. National and international programs provide continued leadership development as teens see and experience a larger picture of 4-H and the opportunities available. Trips at these levels are designed to advance 4-H’ers on the leadership continuum by strengthening cultural competencies, expanding world views, and applying workforce skills. The WSU 4-H system offers members a wide variety of exciting leadership adventures to choose from whether they start at an early age or join when they are teens. The organizational emphasis on learning and practicing leadership has proven to reinforce many of the life skills necessary for the youth of Washington State to achieve positive outcomes.


Program Highlight

Mentor Programs Encourage Lifelong Learning

W

ashington youth and their mentors are engaging in exciting and challenging learning experiences through the support of the National Mentoring Program (NMP) funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and National 4-H Council. Eight county projects, currently in their fourth year of funding, are serving over 700 youth and 250 mentors. The Tech Wizards projects in Spokane, Pierce, Ferry, Kitsap, and Klickitat Counties cover a wide range of program areas: • Photography and videography • Robotics • Archery • Digital storytelling • Equine sciences • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) The main objective of the Youth and Families with Promise (YFP) projects is to provide opportunities that encourage positive adult-youth relationships leading to increased social com-

petence and ability to give back. Three YFP projects serving tribal communities include regular Family Night Out events to bring families together for cultural activities that encourage pride in their native heritage. The Rock Creek Band of the Yakama Nation in Klickitat County, the Colville Confederated Tribes in Ferry County, and the Nooksack Tribe in Whatcom County engage youth in community service activities, native crafts such as beading, cooking, and storytelling, as well as a diverse range of hands-on, interactive 4-H projects that support

life skill development. The NMP continues to expand each year as more counties receive grant support to provide training for mentors and then partner them with youth to explore 4-H opportunities such as the National Youth Science experiment, Teen Conference, 4-H camps, archery, and the robotics competition.

Teaching Commitment and Perserverance through Mentoring

W

ho goes swimming in January? Colville Reservation youth do if they participate in 4-H Youth and Families with Promise (YFP)! Every Saturday morning in one of the coldest months of the year, 20 Keller youth and their chaperones braved the chilling temperatures and darkness before daybreak to board a bus and ride for two hours to take swimming lessons at the Spokane YMCA. Trained lifeguards first assessed the youths’ swimming skills and divided the group based on existing abilities. Subsequent lessons focused on developing individual swimming strengths and improving related skills. Linda McLean, Colville Reservation Extension Director, explained that “it is so important for our youth to learn how to swim, as the Colville Reservation is surrounded on three sides by rivers and there are multiple bodies of water all across the reservation.” The need was widely recognized in the community with partnerships between Colville Reservation Extension 4-H and the Colville Confederated Tribes (CCT) Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program, CCT Department of Transportation, and volunteers from Keller Valley Highriders 4-H to help ensure a positive, safe, and well-rounded swim project. Making Safety and Education Enjoyable Keller-area youth have fun at summer play day

K

eller-area youth, along with their parents and other guardians, proved that learning important lessons can be a perfect fit for a summer play day. WSU Colville Reservation and Ferry County Extension helped make the Keller community event a success by combining education with games. Activities were provided for youth on horseback as well as those in the 4-H Horseless Horse Project. Community volunteers set up barrel racing, pole bending, stake races, and even goat tying for those without horses. The very young participants were able to enjoy a slipn-slide to cool off and “dig for money” in the sawdust pit. Linda McLean, Colville Reservation Extension Director, covered helmet safety and fitting, hay and nutrition for horses, and horse identification. She explained that “Head injuries caused by falls from horses account for most of the serious horse and rider injuries.” To demonstrate the need for proper headgear, McLean gave each youth an uncooked egg with a few packing supplies, and instructed them to design a covering that would protect the egg from a six-foot drop. Some eggs survived unharmed, while others cracked, similar to what skulls do upon impact. The experiment helped 4-H members involved with equestrian events to better understand and accept the 4-H

requirement to wear a helmet certified by the Safety Equipment Institute. McLean wrapped up the horse lessons with information on how to identify horses by coat color, face, and leg markings. Each youth participant made a “pool noodle stick horse,” complete with the face markings of their choice. Each youth gained confidence in their knowledge of the markings and public speaking skills by introducing themselves and describing the color of their horse, the markings they drew on their horse, and the horse’s name. The stick horses were used later in the day for the “horseless horse races.” The day ended with fire safety information provided by Henry Kuehne from the Mt. Tolman Fire Center. Kuehne taught the youth about how to prevent campfires from getting out of control by remembering the fire triangle—oxygen, heat, and fuel.

Tribal Youth Preserve Indian Agriculture

F

our Colville Reservation 4-H members were among 60 Native American youth from across the United States selected to participate in the 2013 Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC) Membership Meeting in Las Vegas last December 9–12. The theme for the 27th annual meeting was Perseverance + Sustainability = Security. Federally-Recognized Tribes Extension Program agents nominated Levi Hoffman, Meagan Drywater, Corban Wilder, and Bradley Wilder for their contributions to improving Indian agriculture by excelling in foodrelated 4-H activities and leadership positions. The youth and a chaperone were provided an all-expenses paid trip that allowed them to interact with ag producers, policymakers, and leaders from a range of tribes, government agencies, and businesses. The

youth were able to learn about new and innovative agricultural practices applied to issues tribal nations face when dealing with food production, food safety, land and water use, and economic development. The conference also featured a special youth track with a focus on careers in agriculture. choosing agriculture as a focus for their future. The emphasis throughout the week was how important it is for tribes to sustainably use their resources to feed themselves, also known as food sovereignty. Wave That Clover Proudly! Parents, grandparents, friends, and admirers of 4-H can all show their support for 4-H in Washington by purchasing a new “clover plate” when they renew their vehicle registration. In 2012, then-Governor Christine Gregoire authorized Washington State license plates featuring the 4-H clover. These specialized plates can be purchased at Department of Licensing offices and online. Sales of these plates will raise money to support 4-H activities around the state and the plate fee is tax deductible. So far, the new 4-H license plates have been spotted on busy interstates, across highways, and on meandering country roads. They are popping up in suburbs, farm towns, and the state’s largest cities.
