CAESUUR en het object

ruimteCAESUUR is een fysieke plek waar tentoonstellingen opgebouwd worden, en bezocht. Er wordt een mogelijkheid geboden tot interactie tussen een object en een bezoeker.

En dat niet alleen, objecten verhouden zich tot elkaar, tot de ruimte, tot een discours.

Voor veel kunstenaars is dit een belangrijk proces: het overbrengen en vormen van ideeën door middel van het plaatsen van objecten in een ruimte. Daarnaast zijn er kunstenaars voor wie het object en de ontmoeting met dit object essentieel zijn; het is het hart van hun praktijk. Zij zijn afhankelijk van het unieke moment dat een kijker het gemaakte object ontmoet. Daar waar andere kunstenaars alternatieven hebben, zoals digitale presentaties, of andere representaties van hun werk.

Zij vroeg deze kunstenaars om een object te leveren dat in de openbare ruimte van de stad Middelburg geplaatst wordt. CAESUUR verzamelde de binnengekomen werken, en stelde ze kort ten toon in haar etalage.

Daarna werden de werken in de stad en werd er een rondlooplijst verstuurd naar zo’n 200 postadressen. Dit stelde de bezoekers in staat tot het bezoeken en ontmoeten van deze werken.

De werken beleefden in de stad hun ultieme fysische functies; ze konden bekeken worden, aangeraakt, en gingen relaties aan op vele niveaus. Daarbij waren ze ook kwetsbaar; blootgesteld aan weersomstandigheden en de genade van het publiek. We ‘gebruikten’ de openbare ruimte dus ook een beetje ‘in plaats van’ de sterk verminderde binnenruimtes.

De aandacht voor het object speelt een belangrijke rol in de geschiedenis van ruimteCAESUUR: de afgelopen jaren hebben we meerdere tentoonstellingen gemaakt rondom dit thema.

Wij constateren dat er in de laatste jaren minder mogelijkheden zijn voor professionele kunstenaars die met fysieke media werken om hun werk te tonen. We spreken bijvoorbeeld over schilders, beeldhouwers, keramisten, en installatiekunstenaars waarvoor het object het medium is. Door politieke en maatschappelijke omstandigheden is het aantal plekken waar het werk getoond kan worden veel kleiner geworden.

De Coronacrisis heeft deze omstandigheden verder verscherpt.

Dit alles vormde de aanleiding voor CAESUUR om een project

CAESUUR and the object

ruimteCAESUUR is a physical space where exhibitions are created and visited. It offers an opportunity for interaction between artworks and visitors. In this, material objects relate to each other, to the building, to a discourse. For many artists, this is an important process: conveying and forming ideas through the placement of objects in a space. There are artists for whom the material object and the encounter with it are essential; it is the heart of their practice. Whereas others have alternatives to present their work, such as digital platforms, the work of these artists depends on the moment when an audience encounters the physical artefact.

ruimteCAESUUR invited ten artists for whom the physical object is central to their practice. They asked these artists to deliver an object that would be placed in public space in the town of Middelburg. CAESUUR exhibited the submitted work briefly in its display window. Subsequently, the works were placed on different locations in the town. A guide map was published, posted to some 200 postal addresses to enable visitors to locate and encounter the works.

In public space, the works will become interactive objects; they could be viewed, touched, and entered into relationships on many levels. They were also ultimately vulnerable: exposed to weather conditions and the mercy of the public.

Upon conclusion of the exhibition, we created analogue magazine with an inventory of what has happened to the works since they were installed throughout the town.

A focus on the material object has played an important role in the history of ruimteCAESUUR. In recent years, we have made several exhibitions that engage with this theme. We have noticed that there are ever fewer opportunities for artists working in physical media to show their work, such as painters, sculptors, ceramists and installation artists for whom the object is the primary medium. Due to political and social circumstances, the number of places where their work can be shown has been drastically reduced in recent years.

In addition, the Corona crisis has further aggravated this situation. In response, ruimteCAESUUR is now initiating a new project in public space that focuses on encounters with objects.

Marinus van Dijke WERK

WORK

Vanuit een gevoel van verbondenheid met het landschap orden ik mijn ervaringen die ik daar op doe en dat geeft zin aan mijn bestaan. In mijn werken stroomt het water, waait de wind, groeien de planten en bewegen mens en dier. Allen laten sporen achter, herinneringen die bewaard en verwerkt worden en zo teruggehaald in de verbeelding.

In de zomer van 2019 was ik strandbroederhoeder op het Verklikkerstrand van Schouwen-Duiveland. Dit heeft mijn kijk op de natuur veranderd. Ik dacht altijd dat de veranderingen in de natuur cycli waren die zichzelf alsmaar herhaalden. In de duinen sterven de planten en komen, nadat er een uitlogingsproces heeft plaatsgevonden, na een aantal jaren weer terug. Dit zijn zichtbare processen. Maar ik heb ontdekt, dat die processen onderhevig zijn aan veel grotere cycli, die niet zijn te overzien.

We staan aan het begin en weten niet waar het naar toe gaat. Al die kleine bewegingen in de natuur worden door deze grotere cycli opgeslokt.

Waarnemingen van vandaag zijn snel achterhaald en voor je het weet alweer geschiedenis. Hoe we op dit moment naar het nu kijken in de wetenschap dat het straks totaal anders zal zijn. Deze gedachte heeft grote invloed op het werk.

From a sense of connection to the landscape, I organize the experiences I have there, and that gives my life meaning. In my work water flows,wind blows, plants grow and people and animals move. They all leave their traces behind, memories that are processed and afterwards visualized.

In the summer of 2019 I was a beach breeder keeper on the Verklikkerstrand in Schouwen-Duiveland. This changed my view of nature. I always thought that the changes in nature were cycles that kept repeating themselves. Plants dying in the dunes and return after a number of years of eutrophication of the soil. These are visible processes. But I have discovered that these processes are subject of much larger cycles, which are incalculable.

We're at the beginning and we don't know where it's going.

All those small movements in nature are swallowed up by these larger cycles.

Today's observations are quickly obsolete and before you know it, it is history. How we look at it now in the knowledge that it will be totally different in the future. This thought has a great influence on my work.

Poppy JacksonGB WORK

Beacon/Baken physically signposts the site of pandemic births in the city of Middelburg. It publicly honours pregnant people’s private navigation of challenging circumstances, in order to birth during the recent crisis. Being installed in public space outside the Birthing Centre, the work becomes a topping out ceremony for complete pregnancies, acting as a bright marker of birth in difficult times.

Beacon / Baken markeert een plaats van pandemiegeboortes in de stad Middelburg. Het is een publiek eerbetoon aan zwangere mensen en hun persoonlijke zoektocht in de huidige uitdagende omstandigheden om te baren tijdens deze crisis. Geinstalleerd in de publieke ruimte bij het geboortecentrum wordt het werk een vlaghijsceremonie voor voldragen zwangerschappen, een signaal voor geboortes in moeilijke tijden.

A red warning beacon, Beacon/Baken’s intention is to call to the international birthing community as a collective pregnant army that faced an unprecedented situation. The object’s peak is split open - a birds beak mouth-siren calling down assistance and open to receive it. The shape and colour recall a snake’s tongue, echoing traditional mythology of a snake curled around a womb protecting a baby. Here, the snake’s tongue rises up from its interior position to make fiercely visible a vocalising of its protection.

Beacon / Baken is een rood waarschuwingssignaal bedoeld als oproep aan de internationale geboortegemeenschap, als gezamenlijk leger van zwangeren onder buitengewone omstandigheden. De bovenkant van het object is opengespleten, als een vogelbek, een sirene die om hulp roept en hulp kan ontvangen. De kleur en de vorm doen denken aan een slangentong, een verwijzing naar de slang die zich in de klassieke mythologie beschermend om de baarmoeder heen wikkelt. In dit geval steekt de slangentong uit zijn verborgen positie naar buiten als krachtig beschermend gebaar.

Het Beacon / Baken hoofddeksel is gemaakt tijdens het derde kwartaal van mijn zwangerschap, als protest tegen het ontzeggen van mijn keuze voor thuisgeboorte vanwege Covid-19 beperkingen. Het werk is gericht op het herstellen van de zeggenschap van zwangere mensen en om het erkennen van hun ervaringen.

The Beacon/Baken headpiece was created during the third trimester of my pregnancy, in protest of my choice to home birth being removed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The work aims to reclaim power removed from pregnant people’s choices and announce recognition of their experiences.

1948. De eerste route die ik kende in Middelburg was van de Markt over de Nieuwe Burg en langs de Lange Jan. Dat was nog lang geen toren. Door een poort naar het Abdijplein. Er werden gebouwen gemaakt, of afgebroken. Dat begreep ik niet.

“Let goed op hoe we lopen, zo gaan we straks ook weer terug.” Weer een poort door, langs een rotsige fontein direct de Bleek in en via een rechte laan naar de Koepoort.

Een stukje over de Veersesingel, naar de Rozenstraat. Daar woonden mijn grootouders.

Aan het einde van de middag wandelden we terug. Naar de poort! Dóór de Koepoort. Het leek wel een loket waar je je kon melden om de stad binnen te komen. Er was niemand met een stempel of om een kaartje te verkopen. Snel verder om je zakken te vullen met zoveel mogelijk glimmende kastanjes. Bovenaan het Molenwater weer hollend naar beneden door de Bleek. Aan het einde was een bloemenperk bij de Balans waar ’s zomers afrikaantjes bloeiden. Op naar de volgende poort met het plein waar stapels stenen lagen. In eindeloze reeksen en keurig afgebikt. Dat moesten weer gebouwen worden. Eenmaal op de Markt stond de bus klaar voor vertrek. Langs een gebouw achter houten schuttingen en gestut door steigers. Ik dacht dat het zo hoorde en altijd zo zou blijven ………

1948. The first route I knew in Middelburg was from the Markt over the Nieuwe Burg and along the Lange Jan. That was far from a tower. Through a gate to the Abbey Square.

Buildings were build or demolished. I did not understand that.

"Pay close attention to how we walk, we will return the same way later on." Through another gate, past a rocky fountain, directly into the Bleek and along a straight lane to the Koepoort. A bit along the Veersesingel, to the Rozenstraat. My grandparents lived there.

We walked back at the end of the afternoon. To the gate!

Through the Koepoort. It seemed like a counter where you could report to enter the city. There was no one with a stamp or to sell a ticket. Continue quickly in order to fill your pockets with as many shiny wild chestnuts as possible. At the top of the Molenwater, again running down through the Bleek. At the end there was a flower bed near the Balans where marigolds bloomed in the summer. On to the next gate with the square where piles of stones lay in endless series and neatly chipped. They had to be transformed into buildings. Once on the Markt, the bus was ready for departure. Along a building behind wooden fences and propped up by scaffolding. I thought it was supposed to be like this and it would always stay that way ………

Tussen het moment van informatie delen en informatie ontvangen ontstaat er een gebied. Een ruimte waar er niet begrepen wordt. Waar waarheid kan transformeren. Waar er een verbinding ontstaat.

An area is created between the moment of sharing information and receiving information. A space where there is no understanding. Where truth can transform. Where a connec-tion arises.

We hebben afspraken met elkaar gemaakt om de ongrijpbare dingen in de ruimte die zich om, tussen, in, met en onder ons bewegen, of waar wij ons om, tussen, in, met en onder bewegen tastbaar en universeel te maken. Het geeft ons grip op het ongrijpbare, het laat ons verbonden voelen.

Met elkaar. Met de ruimte.

We have made agreements with each other to make the elusive things in the space that move around, between, in, with and under us, or where we move around, between, in, with and under, tangible and universal. It gives us a grip on the intangible, it makes us feel connected. With each other. With the space.

Een selectie objecten die onderdeel zijn van een groter geheel. Tijdens de observatie vraag ik mij af wat er verstopt zit binnen de vorm van het object. Hoe kan de vorm je uitnodigen tot een bepaalde bewustwording van de omgeving?

A selection of objects that are part of a larger whole. During the observation I wonder what is hidden within the shape of the object. How can the form invite you to a certain awareness of the environment?

In hoeverre behoudt de vorm dezelfde functie als het object losgekoppeld wordt van zijn vertrouwde omgeving?

To what extent does the form retain the same function when the object is disconnected from its familiar environment?

Hoe minimaal kun je iets maken zodat het toch nog functioneert. Dat was een van die vragen die bij Fred van den Berge regelmatig opdook. Een van zijn antwoorden is te zien in de vorm van buitenmeubilair in de tuin achter het Zeeuws archief. De bankjes hebben Fred overleefd, en dragen nog regelmatig mensen die even een pauze nemen.

De drager die ik een keramieken bakje laat dragen is ook tot een minimum teruggebracht. Het laat iets zien van de fragiele balans van dragen en gedragen worden.

Voor dit project zoek ik Fred nog een keer op.

How much can one minimize an object, and still keep it functional. That was one of Fred van den Berge’s returning questions. One of the answers he found is to be seen in the shape of public furniture in the garden behind the archives. These benches outlive Fred, and carry people that take a moment of rest.

The support I made that carries a ceramic bowl is also reduced to a minimum. It reveals something about the subtle balance of supporting and being supported.

For this project I visit Fred once more.

Hans Overvliet WERK

DISTANT SUFFERING XXIII | i.d. of a shared artefact

The day that the whole of the Netherlands – rightly so - happily played in and with the snow that fell for the first time in years, people died in this camp: children and adults. How many? No one knows; nobody keeps track anymore.

After all, this refugee camp and all the other camps ‘house’ the human waste of our neoliberal society.

But, as long as they're there as a group, you might as well make use of them. As in the marketing of the municipality of Middelburg regarding its self declared profile as city of freedom, being the city of the Four Freedoms Awards.

Every two years, the historic city centre is turned into a "nogo zone" for its ordinary inhabitants. In a fenced off area, guarded by police officers, snipers and helicopters, an elite flown in from all over the world, strides through the city to clap in honour for the laureates.

When the question is raised to rescue a few children in extreme need from Mora 1.0, our city politicians and their companions turn a blind eye. When do we cancel the misguided Four Freedom Awards party and start with a real commitment and adequate help?

This work wants to draw attention to the same consequences of the bombardment that hit Middelburg in 1940, turned into art in public space by Ko de Jonge in 1988, and the disaster that occurs every day elsewhere.

Op de dag dat heel Nederland zich – terecht - vrolijk uitleefde in en met de voor het eerst in jaren gevallen sneeuw, stierven er in Mora op Lesbos mensen: kinderen en volwassenen.

Hoeveel? Geen mens weet het; niemand houdt het meer bij.

Want in dit vluchtelingenkamp en alle andere kampen zit immers het menselijk afval van onze neoliberale maatschappij.

Maar goed, zo lang ze er als ‘groep’ toch zijn, kun je er net zo goed gebruik van maken. Zoals in de marketing van de gemeente Middelburg aangaande haar zelf verklaarde profiel als ‘stad van de vrijheid, stad van de Four Freedoms Awards’.

Elke twee jaar verandert het historische centrum van de stad in een ‘no-go zone’ voor haar gewone inwoners. In een met metershoge hekken afgezet gebied, bewaakt door politieagenten, sluipschutters en helikopters schrijdt een vanuit de hele wereld ingevlogen elite door de stad om de laureaten toe te klappen in de Nieuwe Kerk.

Maar als er een paar kinderen moeten worden gered uit het uitgebrande Mora 1.0 dan kijken ze de andere kant op. Wanneer ruilen we het misplaatste feestje van de Four Free-dom Awards in voor werkelijke betrokkenheid en adequate hulp?

Dit werk wil aandacht vragen voor de gelijkvormigheid van het afschuwelijke bombardement dat Middelburg in 1940 trof, vormgegeven in de openbare ruimte door Ko de Jonge in 1988, en de ramp die zich elders elke dag voltrekt. www.hansovervliet.com

Jorieke Rottier WORK

WERK Buitenruimte vormt binnenruimte. De muur werd afgebroken, het afval gedumpt. Eenmaal gebakken werd de klei niet meer zo gemakkelijk opgenomen in de bodem van de zee.

De getijden speelden met de randen tot die verdwenen. Het grenzeloos geworden oppervlak droeg ik mee in mijn jaszak, een gevonden spijker paste, met wat wringen, in een bestaand gat.

De indrukken en ervaringen waaruit het leven bestaat lijken mij in de eerste instantie allemaal even belangrijk te zijn.

Door de handelingen binnen het werkproces neemt de externe en interne druk om deze dingen te moeten duiden, meten en beoordelen af. De verwachtingen die met alles waarmee een relatie aangegaan kan worden samenhangen verdwijnen. Daardoor ontstaat ruimte voor contemplatie en aandachtig aanwezig zijn.

In tegenstelling tot concentratie beslaat aandacht een groot gebied en sluit het niet uit. Het is niet smal en doelgericht maar breed en mogelijkheidsgericht.

Door bezig te zijn met materialen als stenen en draden denk ik een niet-ronde cirkel te beschrijven, al zoekend, kijkend en denkend met hoofd en handen. Dit is een doorgaande beweging. Binnenruimte vormt buitenruimte.

External space shapes internal space. The wall tore down, the fragmented parts thrown away. Once fired, the seafloor couldn’t absorb the clay that easy anymore. The tides played with the sharp edges until they disappeared. Inside my pockets, I carried the now polished surface with me. A nail, picked up from the streets, fitted in an already existing hole.

At first, all impressions and experiences life brings seem equally important to me. Gestures made as part of my process bring decompression to the inner and outer pressure to signify, measure and rank them. Expectations that come with things you can relate to disappear. This creates space for contemplation and attentiveness.

Contrary to concentration, attention coves a wide area and is not exclusive. It is not narrow and purposeful but broad and possibility-oriented.

By occupying myself with stones, lines and threads I mean to describe an imperfect circle through searching, observing and thinking, both sensitively and mentally. In my experience, this forms an ongoing motion. Internal space shapes external space.

Vincent VoillatFR WORK

Vincent Voillat was born in 1977, graduated from the Ecole Supérieure d’Art de Grenoble (2001) and from Le FresnoyStudio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing (2003).

His work explores how physical objects, actual people and intangible entities - such as information, ideas, or human memories - move within and relate to both actual urban and natural territories, and virtually created ones like personal mental maps, or cyberspace.

Vincent Voillat is particularly interested in the relationship between the physical landscape and its human perception.

His creative work is grounded in the study of the natural world: collecting rock samples from quarries, examination of archaeological strata and observations of plant behaviour.

Since 2005 he has collaborated with the Collectif Mu (as a designer and art director. He has exhibited in Le Magasin, National Centre of Contemporary Art in Grenoble, the Städtische Galerie in Erlangen, Germany, at the Embassy of France in Moscow, and in many digital arts festivals including Scopitone and Ososphère.

Vincent Voillat lives in Paris.

Vincent Voillat werd geboren in 1977. Hij studeerde af aan de Ecole Supérieure d’Art de Grenoble (2001) en aan Le FresnoyStudio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing (2003).

Zijn creatieve werk is gebaseerd op de studie van de natuurlijke wereld: het verzamelen van gesteentemonsters uit steengroeven, onderzoek van archeologische aardlagen en observaties van plantengedrag.

Sinds 2005 werkt hij samen met het Collectif Mu (als ontwerper en art director. Hij heeft geëxposeerd in Le Magasin, Nationaal Centrum voor Hedendaagse Kunst in Grenoble, de Städtische Galerie in Erlangen in Duitsland, bij de Ambassade van Frankrijk in Moskou, en op veel festivals voor digitale kunst, waaronder Scopitone en Ososphère.
