In het 25ste jaar van bestaan van ruimteCAESUUR werken Witte Rook uit Breda en ruimteCAESUUR in Middelburg in 2020 aan een jaarprogramma.

Witte Rook en ruimteCAESUUR pogen in deze samenwerking een beeldend perspectief op de rol van internet in de artistieke praktijk te bieden en bevragen tegelijkertijd de waarde van offline tentoonstellingsplekken.

From one to another, to you. – Charlotte Besuijen “Door de duur van het tekenen vormen de oppervlaktes van de tekening een gelaagdheid. Tekenen betekent voor mij dan ook dat bepaalde handelingen in deze gelaagdheid worden gestold. Deze zijn aan het oppervlak van de tekeningen zichtbaar. In het werk dat ik aan het ontwikkelen ben wil ik de lagen van handelingen uit het tekenen inzichtelijk maken door middel van uitsneden.”

In the 25th year of existence of ruimteCAESUUR, Witte Rook from Breda and ruimteCAESUUR in Middelburg in 2020 together are working on an annual program.

In this collaboration, Witte Rook and ruimteCAESUUR attempt to offer a visual perspective on the role of the internet in artistic practice and at the same time question the value of offline exhibition locations.

From one to another, to you. – Charlotte Besuijen “Due to the duration of the drawing, the surfaces of the drawing form a layering. For me, drawing means that certain actions are solidified in this stratification. This is visible on the surface of the drawings. In the work that I am developing, I want to make the layers of actions from drawing transparent by means of cutouts.”

De tekening die terugdenkt.

Een tekening doet ons al snel denken aan een spontane actie. Mogelijk een overblijfsel van het idee dat een tekening geen echt werk is. Maar een studie, een oefening, een spontaan gebaar. Charlotte rekt de tijd van het tekenen uit, krast de tijd in haar tekening. Knipt gaten in het verloop, plakt nieuwe tijd over oude tijd heen. Als een naald op een langspeelplaat las ik tekeningen, maar nu blijf ik haperen, de naald slaat over. Hier gebeurt iets met tijd wat ik niet kan traceren, er wordt mij tijd ontnomen, en aangeboden. Ik zie een hoeveelheid aan tijd, tijd van contemplatie, geen kloktijd maar een eigen tijd. Acht vellen papier hangen in een rek aan het plafond. Althans dat lijkt zo, maar het zijn geen acht vellen, het is ĂŠen vel, en het is geen vel. Het is meer een gebied zou ik zeggen, een zone. Het gebied wordt voor me opengesteld, maar tegelijkertijd mag ik er niet binnentreden. Ik word gedwongen er omheen te lopen, en bij momenten krijg ik doorzichten aangeboden. Ik denk spontaan aan kwetsbaarheid om de loshangende delen, maar ik moet mezelf corrigeren. Het gehele werk is van grote kracht, er heerst soevereiniteit. Zo snel vergissen we ons en verwarren we kwetsbaarheid en kracht met elkaar. Juist hier waar rafels hangen, wordt ik als kijker kwetsbaar. Ik word zelf de mogelijke destructieve kracht. Langzaam en voorzichtig denk ik om de tekening heen, stap voor stap. Mijn tijd vermengt zich met die van de tekening, en die van Charlotte.

De tekening strekt zich uit in de ruimte, en trekt zich weer terug. Lijnen trekken paden, worden doorbroken, en overlapt. Deze tekening is een wezen.

The drawing that thinks back at you.When we think of a drawing, our first thought is that of a spontaneous action. Possibly a remnant of the idea that a drawing is not a work on itself, but a study, a draft, a spontaneous gesture. Charlotte however stretches the time of the act of drawing. She scratches time into her work, cuts holes in the course, pastes new time over old time. I used to read drawings like a needle traces a LP recording, but now I falter, the needle skips. Something is happening here with time that is untraceable, time is taken from me, and gifted to me as well. I see a multitude of time, time of contemplation, not the objective (clock time) , but a personal time. Nine sheets of paper extended from a rack on the ceiling. At least, that is what it looks like.

There are not nine sheets, but only one, and it is not a sheet at all. It is more like an area I would suggest, a zone. This zone is open to me, but at the same time I am prohibited to enter. I am forced to circle around it, and get glimpses of insight. The vulnerability of the loose parts suddenly appears to me, but I have to correct myself. The whole piece is of great power, it is sovereign. The mistake is easily made to confuse vulnerability and power. In particular the spots where the drawings fray, I am the vulnerable one. I become a possible destructive force. Slowly and carefully I think myself around the work, step by step. My time mixes with that of the work, and of Charlotte. The drawing stretches out in space, and retracts. Lines form paths, are breached, and overlap. This drawing is a being.
